We have been asked to assess how<br />

<strong>Rolls</strong>-<strong>Royce</strong> has applied <strong>the</strong> London<br />

Benchmark<strong>in</strong>g Group (LBG)<br />

model to measure and report on<br />

its global corporate community<br />

<strong>in</strong>volvement activity.<br />

The LBG model helps bus<strong>in</strong>esses<br />

to improve <strong>the</strong> management,<br />

measurement and report<strong>in</strong>g of <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

corporate community <strong>in</strong>volvement<br />

programmes.It focuses on<br />

companies’voluntary contributions<br />

to society,encourag<strong>in</strong>g as accurate,<br />

quantitative,and complete an<br />

account as possible.The model<br />

applies consistent methods for<br />

valu<strong>in</strong>g a company’s <strong>in</strong>puts to<br />

community programmes,<strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g<br />

cash,time and ’<strong>in</strong> k<strong>in</strong>d’.It also<br />

exam<strong>in</strong>es <strong>the</strong> programmes’outputs<br />

and longer-term impacts.There are<br />

now over 70 LBG member<br />

companies,which work toge<strong>the</strong>r<br />

to improve <strong>the</strong> management and<br />

measurement of <strong>the</strong>ir community<br />

programmes,and greater consistency<br />

and comparability <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir external<br />

report<strong>in</strong>g (see www.lbg-onl<strong>in</strong>e.net<br />

for more <strong>in</strong>formation).<br />

<strong>Rolls</strong>-<strong>Royce</strong> is an active and<br />

committed member of <strong>the</strong> LBG.<br />

As manager of <strong>the</strong> LBG,we have<br />

worked with <strong>Rolls</strong>-<strong>Royce</strong> to review<br />

its understand<strong>in</strong>g of <strong>the</strong> model<br />

dur<strong>in</strong>g this,its second year of<br />

membership.We are satisfied<br />

that LBG evaluation pr<strong>in</strong>ciples are<br />

understood and be<strong>in</strong>g correctly<br />

applied <strong>in</strong> material respects,<br />

and that <strong>Rolls</strong>-<strong>Royce</strong> has made<br />

particular progress <strong>in</strong> measur<strong>in</strong>g<br />

what its major projects achieve,<br />

both for <strong>the</strong> community and<br />

<strong>the</strong> company.Our work has not<br />

extended to an <strong>in</strong>dependent audit<br />

of <strong>the</strong> data presented <strong>in</strong> this report.<br />

Look<strong>in</strong>g ahead,we recommend<br />

that <strong>Rolls</strong>-<strong>Royce</strong> aims to capture<br />

and report a greater proportion of its<br />

contributions,particularly employees’<br />

volunteer<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> paid company time,<br />

and <strong>the</strong> contributions of different<br />

bus<strong>in</strong>ess units.The company is<br />

already committed to <strong>in</strong>troduc<strong>in</strong>g<br />

LBG evaluation pr<strong>in</strong>ciples more<br />

widely throughout <strong>the</strong> company<br />

and monitor<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>ir implementation,<br />

and we look forward to see<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>the</strong> results of this <strong>in</strong>vestment <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

years ahead.<br />

It is a comprehensive record of<br />

<strong>the</strong> company’s programmes and<br />

demonstrates its commitment to<br />

local communities.The publication<br />

conta<strong>in</strong>s examples of <strong>the</strong> programmes<br />

and <strong>in</strong>itiatives <strong>Rolls</strong>-<strong>Royce</strong> has<br />

undertaken and been <strong>in</strong>volved with.<br />

Bus<strong>in</strong>ess <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Community</strong> is a unique<br />

movement of 700 companies across<br />

<strong>the</strong> UK committed to cont<strong>in</strong>ually<br />

improv<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>ir positive impact on<br />

society.<strong>Rolls</strong>-<strong>Royce</strong> has played a key<br />

role <strong>in</strong> develop<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> movement<br />

s<strong>in</strong>ce it became a member <strong>in</strong> 1987,<br />

and recently,through <strong>the</strong> leadership<br />

of Sir John Rose,has supported <strong>the</strong><br />

development of leadership <strong>in</strong> schools.<br />

At Bus<strong>in</strong>ess <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Community</strong> we<br />

are ask<strong>in</strong>g more of our members,<br />

<strong>in</strong> particular we ask <strong>the</strong>m to make<br />

a commitment to action to:<br />

– Integrate responsible bus<strong>in</strong>ess<br />

practice throughout <strong>the</strong>ir bus<strong>in</strong>ess<br />

– Impact through collaborative action<br />

to tackle disadvantage<br />

– Inspire,<strong>in</strong>novate and lead by<br />

shar<strong>in</strong>g best practice<br />

Across <strong>the</strong> bus<strong>in</strong>ess we are delighted<br />

to see <strong>Rolls</strong>-<strong>Royce</strong> address<strong>in</strong>g each<br />

of <strong>the</strong>se commitments and constantly<br />

develop<strong>in</strong>g and improv<strong>in</strong>g its<br />

performance aga<strong>in</strong>st <strong>the</strong>m.<br />

responsibility to report publicly<br />

on its community <strong>in</strong>volvement<br />

<strong>Rolls</strong>-<strong>Royce</strong> is lead<strong>in</strong>g by example,<br />

with staff <strong>in</strong>volved <strong>in</strong> an impressive<br />

range of programmes that make<br />

a real difference to real people and<br />

help tackle disadvantage <strong>in</strong> local<br />

communities.Partners <strong>in</strong> Leadership<br />

(match<strong>in</strong>g headteachers with senior<br />

bus<strong>in</strong>ess managers),Project Compass<br />

(support<strong>in</strong>g homeless ex-service<br />

men and women) and <strong>the</strong> pilot<strong>in</strong>g<br />

of a new programme Skills Bank,<br />

which helps improve <strong>the</strong> l<strong>in</strong>ks<br />
