Our long and successful history of community activity has taken<br />
us on a journey of exploration and discovery.As we <strong>in</strong>crease our<br />
<strong>in</strong>volvement,we learn more about <strong>the</strong> people and places where<br />
we work and about ourselves.In this report we travel around <strong>the</strong><br />
<strong>world</strong> to demonstrate <strong>the</strong> variety of work we undertake,with<br />
real-life case studies and examples of projects.<br />
5<strong>Rolls</strong>-<strong>Royce</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Community</strong><br />
Past<br />
The journey began <strong>in</strong> 1904 when <strong>the</strong><br />
Hon.Charles <strong>Rolls</strong> and Henry <strong>Royce</strong>,<br />
<strong>the</strong> found<strong>in</strong>g fa<strong>the</strong>rs of <strong>the</strong> famous<br />
brand,forged a company which<br />
soon became famous for its quality<br />
workmanship and eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g<br />
excellence.The company ethos was<br />
firmly rooted <strong>in</strong> responsible bus<strong>in</strong>ess<br />
behaviour,recognis<strong>in</strong>g and reward<strong>in</strong>g<br />
dedicated and loyal service by<br />
employees,and form<strong>in</strong>g l<strong>in</strong>ks with<br />
<strong>the</strong> community <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> firm belief<br />
that it was <strong>the</strong> company’s duty<br />
to give someth<strong>in</strong>g back.<br />
As <strong>Rolls</strong>-<strong>Royce</strong> grew,both organically<br />
and through acquisition,<strong>the</strong><br />
company’s largely philanthropic<br />
contributions to <strong>the</strong> community<br />
were extended both locally and<br />
through corporate <strong>in</strong>itiatives.<br />
Present<br />
We are now cont<strong>in</strong>u<strong>in</strong>g that ‘voyage<br />
of discovery’,explor<strong>in</strong>g a varied and<br />
lively programme of community<br />
activities around <strong>the</strong> <strong>world</strong>.There<br />
are four ma<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>mes to our<br />
community programme – education,<br />
arts and culture,environment,and<br />
regeneration.Work<strong>in</strong>g with external<br />
brokers,we build long-term<br />
partnerships with clear objectives<br />
to benefit both <strong>the</strong> community<br />
and our bus<strong>in</strong>ess.This allows our<br />
employees to get <strong>in</strong>volved <strong>in</strong><br />
<strong>in</strong>dividual or group activities which<br />
are becom<strong>in</strong>g an <strong>in</strong>tegral part of our<br />
people development programmes.<br />
In 2003,we reported publicly on<br />
our community <strong>in</strong>volvement for <strong>the</strong><br />
second year runn<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> UK’s<br />
Bus<strong>in</strong>ess <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Community</strong>’s (BitC)<br />
Corporate Responsibility Index.<br />
We achieved 10th place with a<br />
score of 94.89 per cent,represent<strong>in</strong>g<br />
a significant improvement on<br />
our position <strong>the</strong> previous year.Our<br />
community impact is also reviewed<br />
by <strong>the</strong> Dow Jones Susta<strong>in</strong>ability<br />
Indices and,for <strong>the</strong> second year<br />
runn<strong>in</strong>g,we are a sector leader <strong>in</strong><br />
both <strong>the</strong> Dow Jones-World and<br />
European STOXX <strong>in</strong>dices.<br />
We are a member of <strong>the</strong> London<br />
Benchmark<strong>in</strong>g Group,a consortium<br />
of more than 70 companies work<strong>in</strong>g<br />
toge<strong>the</strong>r to assess and measure<br />
community programmes,and we<br />
have used <strong>the</strong>ir model to help us<br />
evaluate <strong>the</strong> impact of our major<br />
projects.Bus<strong>in</strong>ess <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Community</strong><br />
has also provided its assessment<br />
of our activities.Their assurance<br />
statements are on page 27.<br />
We have established a programme<br />
of dialogue with our community<br />
partners and <strong>the</strong>ir comments can<br />
be found throughout this report.<br />
Future<br />
As our partnerships evolve,we will<br />
review and evaluate <strong>the</strong> success<br />
of our projects adapt<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>m,<br />
where appropriate,to more locations<br />
around <strong>the</strong> <strong>world</strong>.An example of this<br />
<strong>in</strong> action is our payroll-giv<strong>in</strong>g scheme,<br />
which has achieved substantial<br />
success both <strong>in</strong> North America<br />
and <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> UK.<br />
We will extend our report<strong>in</strong>g<br />
of <strong>in</strong>ternational community<br />
programmes and move toward<br />
a global representation of <strong>the</strong><br />
projects we support.We will also<br />
evaluate more of our programmes.<br />
We are beg<strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g to embed our<br />
community activity with<strong>in</strong> formal<br />
bus<strong>in</strong>ess improvement processes.<br />
For example,across our bus<strong>in</strong>esses<br />
we are implement<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> European<br />
Foundation for Quality Management’s<br />
bus<strong>in</strong>ess excellence model,which<br />
<strong>in</strong>cludes <strong>in</strong>dicators to establish <strong>the</strong><br />
impact bus<strong>in</strong>ess has on society<br />
through its community programmes.<br />
Our cont<strong>in</strong>u<strong>in</strong>g work <strong>in</strong> this area will<br />
help us to ga<strong>in</strong> a clear understand<strong>in</strong>g<br />
and develop <strong>the</strong> susta<strong>in</strong>ability of<br />
<strong>the</strong>se projects by demonstrat<strong>in</strong>g<br />
<strong>the</strong> advantages of bus<strong>in</strong>ess and<br />
community work<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> partnership.
