In today’s business world it is more critically important to build a
foundation on what’s right more than who’s right. What principles we
subscribe to are more important than this quarter’s earnings. Stand-out
companies stand for something and their values permeate the entire
organization. When your values are clear to all, making decisions
becomes easier. We believe we do not win customers for life, but rather
win them every visit by delivering value and legendary service.
Another pillar in a great company is structure with standards, systems,
and procedures. You’ll never know if you’re winning unless you keep
score, so we measure what’s measurable and make measurable what is
not. We are a company that thinks “if it ain’t broke fix it anyway.” The
thrill that comes from witnessing excellence is part of why our work never
gets boring.
Banyan Approach is a quarterly publication for our customers, vendors and friends.
What Makes a Great Company?
Winning companies recognize their product is service and their strength
is their people. The only sustainable competitive advantage is our
people. Companies that build teams by investing in their people and
enabling them to become peak performers are the companies that grow
and attract talented people.
In the end, what makes Banyan great are the wonderful customers
that return year after year and often with
fellow aviators. We know that our customers
have choices, have needs, urgencies,
and each is unique. Thank you for your
business over the years. We are most
grateful that you have made us a great
company.
Don Campion, President
Banyan provides maintenance, engine and avionics services for Falcon Operators.

Hangar & Office Space Available at Banyan
Banyan continues to expand at (FXE). Earlier this
year, Banyan acquired hangars 65 and 66
with an additional 33,000 square feet
of space.
Under the direction of Banyan’s
Dan Torres and his building
maintenance team, the hangars
have been remodeled
into rentable offices with new
carpet, tile and paint. “These
are great offices for aviation
companies or individuals who
want to be located at FXE. They
are also available as a three-office or a
five-office suite with side street access. The
offices are close to United States Customs, have
good access to I-95 and have space for vehicle parking,” said Torres.
“Pilots and charter companies
enjoy renting
offices here for the convenience
it provides,”
added Jon Tonko, Banyan’s
line service manager.
With 15 hangars,
and over one million
square feet of hangar
and office space within
an 85-acre complex,
Banyan can accommodate
their needs for
space.
Tenants are in good company in the Banyan complex as there are a wide
variety of aviation neighbors all in one location; avionics and maintenance
services, aircraft charter and management, flight training schools,
aircraft sales companies, aerial photography services,
helicopter services, air ambulance companies,
corporate flight departments and
private aircraft. Over 700 aircraft,
including 115 jets and 37 helicopters,
make Executive Airport
their year-round home.
“In addition, flying into
Banyan at FXE is convenient
because of less air traffic,
no landing fees, no ramp
fees, no Customs fee, and no
facility fees,” said Tonko. FXE
offers a 24-hour FAA air traffic
control tower, an instrument landing system,
U.S. Customs & Border Protection Service, aircraft
rescue and fire-fighting station, police substation and 24-hour contract
security. For more information, call 954-491-3170.
On behalf of Banyan, Andrea Bahr, customer support manager, and
John Mason, director of FBO services, accepted the Pilots’ Choice Award. In the 2011 Pilots’ Choice
Survey, Banyan was voted #3 U.S. FBO, #1 Southeast U.S. FBO and #2 Star FBO.
EMS Aviation and Banyan Pursue
Certification for EMS Aspire and
eNfusion Systems
Companies partner to bring effective in-flight
connectivity to Gulfstream Aircraft
Banyan and EMS Aviation, have entered into an agreement to work
together to obtain STC certifications on Gulfstream ® models GII/GIII
aircraft for the EMS Aspire 200 LG and eNfusion ® systems and
products. In addition, Banyan will be certifying the CNX ® Cabin
Gateway series Wi-Fi ® solution for the GIV aircraft.
“We are excited to team with EMS Aviation to provide Gulfstream
operators with airborne connectivity,” said Brian Wilson, Banyan’s
director of avionics. “The flexibility and scalable architecture of the
Aspire system, when combined with data acceleration and Wi-Fi
capabilities, provides the versatility to meet the needs of our clients. Our
customer’s aircraft are currently being outfitted with the Aspire 200 LG
broadband system and augmented with a dual channel Iridium Satcom
and we anticipate that we will receive STC approval through the Federal
Aviation Authority early in the fourth quarter of 2011.”
Like its sister eNfusion system, the Aspire 200 LG system is designed
to transform an aircraft into an airborne hot spot and allows pilots and
passengers to use Wi-Fi enabled PDA devices including BlackBerrys ® ,
iPhones ® and iPads ® to access a multitude of applications; such as,
email, internet browsing, smart phone connectivity and voice communications.
Banyan Pilot Shop News
PILOT S HOP
Over the next few months, Hangar63 (Banyan’s Aviation Store) will
be changed to Banyan Pilot Shop and TropicAero.com will become
BanyanPilotShop.net.
This is being done to take advantage of the strength of the Banyan
brand. Customer feedback tells us that having 3 different names
and logos (Banyan, Hangar63 and TropicAero.com) is confusing.
They also tell us that the Banyan name is well known and that we
should use it to promote both the retail and on-line store.
This makes sense for so many reasons. First, when people call
Hangar63, they immediate ask if they have the Pilot Shop. Second,
advertising will be much easier now that we have our retail store and
on-line store named the same. Third, we’ve felt in our hearts that
although our store is amazing and offers so much, that in fact it is what
it is...and that is a Pilot Shop.
Now that you know the in-side scoop on Banyan’s Pilot Shop, let us
hear your comments.
Marcela Lizarazo, pilot shop sales associate, was very pleased to receive an award from
Robert Mejias for her outstanding sales performance.
Holy Smoke Writes Heavenly Messages
Pilot, Jerry Stevens, of Holy Smoke, Inc. loves
to write spiritual messages in the sky.
Jerry, 68, a retired corporate pilot, started his
skywriting mission 12 years ago. Coming out of
church one morning and not thinking about anything in
particular, God spoke to him and said, “You have a talent for flying and
you should be skywriting and putting up religious messages.” Several
years before, Jerry had given up flying and didn’t have any intention
of flying again, so he asked God for a sign. During a church service
he heard a hymn that ended with “And fill the skies with His praises.”
Stevens took that as a sign and on Thanksgiving Day 1998, he started
his skywriting ministry with his first message. U + God = : )
Jerry flies the bright-yellow, one-seat Grumman Agcat crop duster
named “Holy Smoke” at an altitude of 10,000 feet, 120 mph and forms
letters that are three-quarters
of a mile long.
His skywriting
is commonly
much in common. Keith was a natural fit as he is a pilot with a Bible
school background.
It hasn’t been all easy for Jerry and his skywriting ministry. In 2002, his
New Year’s Day message over Palm Beach, “God is Great” caused
frantic calls to the police. The public was reacting to the news
that 9/11 hijackers were local residents as well as the Muslin
acclamation Allahu Akbar (“God is Great”). This resulted in
Jerry being questioned by the FBI for possible terrorist threats.
Currently Jerry is having a hard time continuing his skywriting
mission due to the increase costs associated with flying. He has
self-funded his operation through the past 12 years, but now finds
it difficult to do so. Each mission requires approximately 51 gallons
of fuel and even though he receives help from Banyan on fuel, the
costs for aircraft maintenance, licenses, and insurance continue to rise.
To keep the mission going, Jerry just sold one of his two planes and had
to lay off Keith. To be able to continue his mission,
seen in Fort
Lauderdale and
over the theme parks in Orlando. However, in the past, Jerry has traveled
to Naples, Fort Myers and even to New Orleans to paint the sky
with spiritual messages.
“This is one way to put God back into our country,” says Jerry. The
messages are visible to everyone up to 35 miles away has resulted in
many testimonials:
“I was having a very bad day and went
out to my car at work to just sit and think.
And there in the sky it said Jesus. I had
to smile. It turned my whole day around,”
wrote an observer.
“My wife and I were getting a divorce and
came out of the lawyer’s office and saw the
sign God Forgives and we knew we had to
give it another try,” said another person.
“My husband died and I was feeling pretty
bad. I looked up to see Trust Jesus and felt
more at peace,” said another.
Jerry is a humble man who prefers to shine
the light on God. “These are God’s love
letters to his children. He is the one putting
those messages in the sky…I am simply his
pen,” says Jerry.
Two years ago, pilot, Keith Poeschl, 33,
joined Jerry in his skywriting mission. The
two men connected instantly as they had
Jerry is starting
a “Buy a
Barrel of Oil” fundraising
effort and looking
for sponsors.
The next time you look up to the heavens and see Trust Jesus, God
Forgives, God Loves U, U + God = : ) why not take a moment and
post a comment on the Holy Smoke website, Godis4U.net or on the
Holy Smoke Inc. Facebook page. For information on sponsorships or
Banyan, along
with many
aircraft dealers
throughout
the world has seen
wild fluctuations within the various
segments of the market. We’ll see a month where
there’s tremendous sales activity followed by a month where all
sales activity seems to stop for no obvious reason. Historically these
fluctuations had a longer frequency, but now every month the cycle
changes.
There was a time when the pre-owned turbine aircraft market closely
followed the stock market. If the market was trending-up, the sales
of aircraft trended-up and vice versa. While we’ve continued to see
volatility in the stock market, the trend has been an overall improvement.
This holds true with aircraft but only to a certain degree. About
the time we start feeling optimistic about a recovery of the aircraft mar-
Aircraft Sales Market Update
Michael O’Keeffe, Sr. Vice President Aircraft Sales & Management
Each day I’m reminded of the dynamic nature of the
pre-owned turbine aircraft market.
ket, some news or world event brings the momentum to a grinding halt.
Today, there are fewer quality, low time aircraft available than 1-year
ago; that is a positive trend. Prices however have not followed suit. The
demand seems to be model specific though. There are a small handful of
aircraft models that are highly desirable right now that last year’s price
tag simply won’t buy. Maybe this is a function of the small quantity
being advertised for sale?
Within every segment of the turbine market from turboprop to light, mid
and heavy jet, there are many great aircraft
available for sale; some even have great prices!
The nicest aircraft within each segment are selling
and they’re selling quickly and commanding
top dollar. This is encouraging if you’re a
seller and discouraging if you’re a buyer.
Banyan named Authorized Service Center
for the Quest Kodiak
Banyan has recently been appointed an authorized service center for Quest Aircraft to provide sales
and service for the new KODIAK utility turboprop aircraft. “This partnership continues Banyan’s
growth to serve the customer and is in alignment with our team’s commitment to assist in the
needs of humanitarian organizations worldwide,” says Don Campion, Banyan’s president. From
inception, Quest Aircraft’s mission has been to
design and manufacture a bush / utility aircraft
specifically suited to the needs of missionary
and humanitarian aviation organizations that
provide access to the most remote regions of
the world and the isolated people who live in
them. The Quest KODIAK aircraft meets this
challenge with very impressive modern STOL
design, and it’s rugged construction and high
useful load coupled with proven Pratt and Whitney PT-6A Turbine power that makes it an excellent
bush/utility aircraft. We are proud to be affiliated with Quest Aircraft and look forward to serving
the Quest community.
We Can’t Do All the World Needs But The World Needs All We Can Do!
Many readers are following the articles about the rebuilding of a very
rural hospital in Nigeria, West Africa where Don Campion grew up as a
missionary kid. Since January, we have been recruiting volunteers and
sending containers of medical equipment, vehicles, tools, and building
materials.
A young couple from Colorado now lives there full-time as construction
managers and the first missionary doctors will live there starting in
January 2012. They will work together to improve the residences, the
hospital wards, water and electricity supplies.
The local community in the small town of Egbe is assisting wherever
possible and is overwhelmed with joy that it is our desire to prepare the
hospital for another 50 years of medical care, training and evangelism.
Working alongside Banyan is SIM (Serving in Mission – a protestant
mission) and Samaritan’s Purse (a Christian organization providing
spiritual and physical aid to hurting people around the world).
Banyan teams up with
Texas Turbine Conversions!
The Banyan maintenance team has partnered with Texas Turbine Conversions
from Celina, Texas to perform an exciting engine upgrade utilizing an STC
(supplemental type certificate) developed by Texas Turbine Conversions called the
“SUPERVAN 900”. The existing Pratt and Whitney PT-6A engine was removed
and a factory-fresh Honeywell TPE-331-12JR is being installed. This complex
engine upgrade includes replacement of not only the engine, propeller, and all
associated wiring and batteries, but also includes a complete redesign of the
cowlings and exhaust system.
This engine conversion will provide the operator with increased horsepower
going from 675 shaft-horsepower with the original engine to a whopping 900
shaft-horsepower. Additional benefits include reduced fuel burn and longer maintenance
intervals, which results in lower overall operating cost.
While performing the extensive engine modification, the Banyan avionics team
is also upgrading the avionics suite. The existing Garmin stack and electromechanical
instruments will be
replaced with a dual G600 panel,
dual GTN750s, GDL-69A unit,
and L3’s trilogy ESI-2000 for a
