The International Association of Plumbing and Mechanical Officials (IAPMO) was founded on May 17, 1926,
with the mandate “to advance the latest and most improved methods of sanitation; to promote the welfare of
and harmony between the owner, the builder, and the craftsman; to accomplish a uniformity in the application
of the provisions of the ordinances; and to promulgate the mutual benefit of the members.” The IAPMO Group
focuses its comprehensive capabilities in the technical aspects of the plumbing and mechanical industries
through its extensive knowledge base, which includes regulators, professional contractors and manufacturers.
Since IAPMO’s founding members first gathered in 1926 to begin writing a model code to protect the health
of the people they served, IAPMO has grown to be recognized the world over for its Uniform Codes. With
offices in eleven states and seven countries, IAPMO has assisted with code development in such diverse
places as Saudi Arabia, China, India, Jordan, Egypt, Israel, Vietnam, Indonesia, Philippines, Venezuela,
Columbia, and the United Arab Emirates. IAPMO also works with the World Plumbing Council and the World
Health Organization to help bring sound, efficient plumbing systems to developing nations.
Comprised of four different business units, The IAPMO Group is truly the one-stop shop for all plumbing and mechanical
code and product compliance. The IAPMO Group’s future is equally bright with the commitment to
grow core competencies within the code development and product certification arenas. As new products are
brought onto the market, IAPMO continues to expand the capabilities of its testing lab to anticipate client needs.
By maintaining this leadership position, IAPMO supports research on new and emerging plumbing technologies.
As many of the new products and systems are designed with increased sustainability within the built environment,
these changes require the codification of plumbing and mechanical system design. With this, the cycle
comes full circle: IAPMO’s focused commitment to safe, innovative plumbing and mechanical systems.
Membership in IAPMO provides access to a variety of benefits and features not available anywhere else in
the code administration or construction industries. For details on becoming an IAPMO member visit
IAPMO’S National Personnel Certification Program is a means to promote professionalism among those
engaged in the professions of Code Administration, Inspection, and Plans Examination. This national
program plays a critical role in helping IAPMO respond to the needs of its member jurisdictions and the
career growth needs of its individual members.
This program assesses knowledge of construction codes as an indicator of ability and professionalism. It
provides a valid and reliable professional program of testing that represents most of the occupations and
technical disciplines in the code administration profession. The program sets the minimum level of required
knowledge for individuals working in the profession and commits them to continuous self development through
its certification renewal program.
This national program will meet the needs of:
• Governmental Jurisdictions and agencies who desire an examination and personnel certification program
based on codes to determine the knowledge and capability of code administration personnel.
• Individuals who choose to provide evidence of their code knowledge for reasons such as prospective
employment or advancement in a current position.
The certifications are organized by occupational titles, providing a progressive career path. Certification is
achieved for most categories by successful completion of one examination. Some certification categories
require multiple examinations.
5. frequently Asked Questions
QUESTIONS ABOUT EXAMINATIONS
How do I schedule an IAPMO exam?
• For exams administered by NITC go to www.iapmo.org/Pages/GetCertified.aspx. Next:
1. Locate a test site for computer-based testing.
2. Find a list of the dates and locations of quarterly pencil and paper examinations .
3. Find a link to NITC’s web site.
When you are ready to complete an application, go to NITC’s web site at www.nationalitc.com.
Follow the registration instructions there.
• For exams administered by NCPCCI go to http://www.prometric.com/NCPCCI/default.htm. The main
page contains links to the Candidate Information Bulletin and the Registration Packet as well as other
pertinent information.
How far in advance must I schedule an exam?
For Paper and Pencil exams the registration cutoff date is approximately 30 days before the date of the quarterly
administration. Computer-based examinations can often be scheduled within a few days of application, however,
in order to get the date and location you prefer, we recommend you apply as far in advance as possible.
What payment methods may I use to pay for my examination?
Payment by check or credit card is accepted by both NITC and NCPCCI. See the examination application
for additional details. Charging examination fees to your IAPMO membership account is not permitted.
How and when do I find out if I passed my examination?
For pencil and paper examinations, candidates will be notified by mail. The notice will indicate “PASS” or
“FAIL” Passing reports do not provide a numeric score. Failing candidates receive a numeric score with diagnostic
information. The diagnostic report is intended to help a candidate in planning a study program before
re-taking the examination.
How soon can I schedule the re-take of a failed examination?
Candidates failing to achieve a passing score will be eligible for re-examination as soon as the next examination
is scheduled. Re-examination will require the submittal of a new application and the payment of a new
fee. There is no limit to the number of times you may take the examinations, however, it is recommended that
you spend some time studying between attempts.
Is there a challenge process?
Yes. Challenge forms are available from your proctor at examination sites. All challenges and appeals must
be submitted in writing.
How do I get an IAPMO certification once I have successfully passed an NCPCCI examination?
• Certification for disciplines such as Building and Electrical require a completed Application along with the
applicable passing score reports issued by NCPCCI.
How long is my examination passing score report valid towards certification? You are encouraged to apply
immediately after receiving your passing results, but have up to three years to apply to IAPMO for certification.
QUESTIONS ABOUT CERTIFICATIONS
How long is my certification valid?
IAPMO Certifications are valid for three years. A certificate and a wallet card are both issued at the time of
certification. Your wallet card will list the renewal date for your certification.
How do I renew my certification?
IAPMOs’ test administrator, NITC, administers the renewal program. A renewal notice will be mailed to you
about six months prior to the expiration of your current certification. For general renewal information visit
http://www.iapmo.org/Pages/RenewCertification.aspx.
