A FEATURE OF ICA PROJECTS
Road Project Linking
Mongolia, China and
Russia
THE Asian Development Bank assisted
Western Regional Road Corridor
Development Project is estimated
to cost approximately US$ 200 million
spanning nearly 750 km will connect
Mongolia to China and Russian Federation.
This project, will form part of
the Asian Highway Network, an ambitious
141,000-km road system traversing
32 Asian countries linking
European roadways.
The first phase of the project covers
431 km of road from China’s border
to the Hovd province in western
Mongolia. Construction is expected to
begin in the second quarter of 2009
and complete in the first quarter of
2012. The second phase is expected to
begin by December 2010, including
the construction of a 317 km road from
the provincial centre of Hovd to the
Russian border.
Kowloon Southern Link
(KSL), Hong Kong
THE Kowloon Southern Link (KSL)
in Hong Kong will link the East Rail
Line’s East Tsim Sha Tsui Station with
the West Rail Line’s Nam Cheong Station,
connecting these two lines at the
southern end. The 3.8 km rail link
aims to facilitate the movement of
passengers from West Rail Line to East
Rail Line and vice versa.
The KSL civil construction works
are segmented into three contracts:
• West Kowloon Station and railway
tunnels from Jordan Road to East
Tsim Sha Tsui Station
• Railway tunnels from Jordan Road
to Yau Ma Tei Ventilation Building
• Railway tunnels from Yau Ma Tei
Ventilation Building to Nam
Cheong Station
The railway tunnels running between
West Kowloon Station and East
Tsim Sha Tsui Station will be constructed
using a Tunnel Boring Machine
(TBM) whereas railway tunnels
from Jordan Road to Nam Cheong
Station will be constructed using cutand-cover
methods. Upon completion,
the KSL will provide a direct link
between Northwest New Territories and
Tsim Sha Tsui, hence taking only 30 minutes
to travel from Tin Shui Wai to East
Tsim Sha Tsui. As of June 2008, building
services and architectural works were
74% completed and track laying was 89%
completed.
The Parbati hydroelectric
project, India
THE National Hydroelectric Power
Corporation (NHPC), India is executing
the 800MW Stage II of the 2,051 MW
Parbati hydroelectric project in the
Kulu district of Himachal Pradesh,
north-west of India. Stage II is a runof-river
scheme comprising an 85m
high concrete gravity dam and a 31.5
km long headrace tunnel, which will
utilise a gross head of 862m to generate
800MW of power.
The tunnelling work is of utmost
importance as the longest reach of 9km
will be excavated with the use of tunnel
boring machines (TBM), and several
2km-long inclined pressure shafts.
In total, 56km of tunnelling works will
be required for the completion of the
project. The project is scheduled for
completion by 2010.
The Hong Kong-Zhuhai-
Macau Bridge
THE Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau Bridge
is a series of bridges and tunnels connecting
western Hong Kong with
Macau, Zhuhai (west of Pearl River
Delta) and part of mainland China’s
southern industrial area. The proposed
29 km bridge is expected to cost between
US $ 2 billion and US $ 3.7 billion
and commence by 2010.
A study showed that a bridge linking
Hong Kong, Zhuhai and Macau
will be extremely beneficial economically,
and in reducing freight and passenger
traffic significantly. In response
to the study, the Hong Kong-
Zhuhai-Macau Bridge was propsed
to shorten the distance from Hong
Kong to Macau and Zhuhai to 30 km
(as opposed to 60 km before), reducing
the journey time to approximately
40 minutes (as opposed to 4.5
hrs before).
