amblings Local happenings... Many might consider January to be the most depressing month of the year. Christmas has been and gone (I hope yours was good), the winter has well and truly set in unfortunately and that sensibly pre-booked 2014 summer holiday is another eight months away. I however think we should all make January our favourite month, let’s have some cheer left over from Christmas. CHARITY EVENTS | FUNDRAISERS | FÊTES & FAIRS | GATHERINGS | HAPPENINGS It’s when you can wipe the slate clean; make some big decisions about the year ahead and the days are getting longer – in fact I can see the snowdrops in the garden already. January is traditionally a quiet month for events with everyone still resting up from Pantos, parties and present shopping, but we have found a few ways to keep you all entertained, so let’s start 2014 as we mean to go on… On 23rd January the Twyford & Ruscombe Horticultural Association are holding a Quiz Night with a Horticultural theme with cheese and wine to enjoy too. It promises to be a special evening for all to begin the gardening year so make sure you arrive for 8pm at St Mary’s Church Centre on Station Rd, Twyford. Members and friends will need to pay £5. Why would a river name mean ‘to turn aside’? Were cooks really living at Cookham? Was Wargrave known as the burial place for soldiers? And why would a river name mean ‘hills’?
