Taxis are not metered. Tariffs for standard
trips are fixed by the government. Most
drivers are trained as guides and are very
capable on the hilly, windy, country roads.

Christopher Columbus has traditionally been given credit for discovering
St. Lucia in 1502, but some relatively new theories challenge
this view. According to one, Juan de la Cosa, a lieutenant
under Columbus, discovered the island in 1499. Another version
attributes the find to a group of shipwrecked French sailors who
allegedly landed here on December 13, 1502, the feast day of St.
Lucia. And, an incongruous fact is the appearance of the island
of St. Lucia on a Vatican globe dated 1502.

During the next 300 years, St. Lucia was alternately occupied
by British and French forces as they battled on land and sea for

control of the West Indies. In 1802, the Treaty of Paris established
France’s sovereignty over the island, but by the following
year, the two nations were at war again. The 1814 Treaty of Paris

ceded St. Lucia to Britain, and the island remained a British possession
until 1967, when it became a self-governing associate ISLANDS
state of Great Britain. In February 1979, St. Lucia became an JAMAICA
independent nation within the British Commonwealth.

How To Get To Town
A taxi is not necessarily required. It is a 15
minute walk from Pointe Seraphine to town
and a taxi would take about 3 minutes.
Shopping
The best duty-free shopping in this port is
near the harbor in Castries, at the Spanishstyle
complex of Pointe Seraphine and La
Place Caranage. Jewelry, watches, china,
crystal, perfume and leather goods can
be found here. The outdoor market on
Jeremie Street offers a wide array of straw
goods. The island's best known products
are the unique hand-silk-screened and
hand-printed fabrics and fashions created
by local craftsmen.
Store Hours
Store hours vary, but most stores are generally
open 9:00 am to 5:00 pm, Monday
through Friday, and 8:00 am to 2:00 pm on
Saturday. Although most stores are closed
on Sundays, the recommended stores are
open on Sundays when ships are in port.

Banks are open Monday through Friday
from 8:00 am to 2:00 pm.
Post Office Hours
The post office is open from 8:00 am to
4:00 pm, Monday through Friday.
