INNOVATION
Innovation means changing the way we think. It means finding better ways – large and small – to serve
our clients, residents and patients. It means going beyond traditional boundaries, or recapturing old
truths, so that all clients feel welcomed and included. It means creating breakthroughs that allow for
better care, delivered more efficiently and effectively, to meet the needs of those we serve.
New Supports for Personal Health
What does providing computer time to write a resume have to do
with health? Can teaching groups of young mothers how to buy
groceries be called a health care service?
The Regina Health District has
programs which do both these things
– and more. These programs are
designed to increase a person’s
opportunity for better income, better
skills in coping with the demands of
life, and improved self esteem.
Studies have shown that
improvements in factors such as
these increase a person’s chance for
better personal health.
The Regina Health District’s
community health centres are
currently involved in programs that
go a step beyond the obvious in
health care promotion. Increasingly,
the focus is turning to areas referred
to as the “determinants of health.”
These determinants involve the
many factors that affect a person’s
life. Included are individual
behaviours, physical environments
(including home, work, school,
community and recreation), as well
as social supports (including family,
friends and community contacts),
income, education, and
employment.
those mothers in improving their
economic situation. Bringing
together unemployed people from
the community to discuss job
interview techniques may allow
them access to employment and
whole new areas of social and
workplace support. Organizing a
feast where community members
can come together to share their
cultural traditions is one way the
District can help build the selfesteem
of those in need.
The range of factors affecting
individual health is vast. The Regina
Health District is working to
integrate services and develop
community partnerships that will
continue addressing the
determinants of health. Above all,
health care in the District will
continue to provide choices that help
individuals and families take control
of factors determining their
own health.
Determinants of Health
What are the broad determinants of
health, the things which make and
keep people healthy? The following
list was prepared by the Federal,
Provincial and Territorial Advisory
Committee on Population Health.
• Income & Social Status
• Social Support Networks
• Education
• Employment & Working Conditions
• Physical Environments
• Biology & Genetic Endowment
• Personal Health Practices
& Coping Skills
• Healthy Child Development
The District has aimed programs
and services at helping individuals
improve these areas. By teaching
young mothers to shop well on a
budget, the District is supporting
Innovative programs go beyond the obvious
in health care
