Marsh harriers
Marsh harriers were widespread in
England, Wales and Ireland before
1800, but they were extinct by 1898
due to persecution and drainage of the
wetlands where they once flourished 33 .
Breeding started again in 1911, largely
in East Anglia, peaked in the 1950s,
but declined to one nesting pair in
1971, probably due to organochlorine
pesticides. Their recovery is continuing
strongly, benefiting from exciting
wetland restoration projects, with
numbers up to 360 breeding
females 34 , but occasional persecution
still takes place.
