Five-finger gloves are comfortable and provide a
good grip. An item number is displayed for each
model both in the catalog and on our website.
Three finger gloves provide a good grip for the
thumb and forefinger, while the other fingers
are kept warm.
Mittens are usually warmer than other models.
They can become even warmer if liners – thin
inner gloves – are used.
Handcuffs are an elastic band used around
the wrist with a strap connected to the gloves.
They serve as safety straps when you take the
gloves off.
Gore-Tex is a breathable and waterproof
membrane between the outer material and liner.
Gore Windstopper Softshell is a windproof
and waterproof stretch fabric with good breathability.
CZone gloves are constructed of four layers
with specific functions (learn more on page 90).
Wolf Paw-construction is a patented fingertip
reinforcement that eliminates seams from
surfaces that receive the most wear and tear.
Extra warm gloves are marked with this symbol.
And remember – mitten models are always
warmer than finger gloves.
Gloves with these symbols are used by the
Swedish and Norwegian national ski teams.
Nature around
the corner
As many know, Hestra is not only
the name of our company, it is also
the name of the community where
our grandfather Martin Magnusson
started his business back in 1936.
For 75 years, our company has been
right here, with the ski hill Isaberg
around the corner and miles of
forest in every direction.
Nature and the people that call the
highlands of Småland home are what
characterize our company. Initially,
Hestra sold work gloves for forestry
workers and and farmers who
spent most of their lives outdoors
working with their hands. They
needed heavy-duty gloves, and in the
wintertime they needed protection
against the cold and snow. Winters in
Hestra tend to be long and snowy.
Skiing has also been a natural part
of life in Hestra, both downhill and
cross-country. In the 1930s, Hestra
was called Småland’s Åre, in reference
to Sweden’s largest ski resort,
and now attracts tens of thousands
of skiers to the slopes at Isaberg
every winter. Our grandfather,
Martin realized early on that skiers
also need durable and warm gloves.
Today, the technical possibilities are
much greater, but we carry with us
his drive for quality and most often
use materials like leather and wool.
We want sustainability to characterize
not only our products, but
also our entire company. Our business
is environmentally certified
and the next generation is active
within the company. They are the
fourth generation of Magnussons
since our beginning in 1936.
This years Glove Guide will explain
how the company has evolved
over the decades. We will introduce
you to the people who live and work
in Hestra. We provide advice about
gloves and the hands, as well as offer
some tips on our favorite places.
Welcome to Hestra.
Gloves then
and now
The Skiing train has arrived at the train station in Hestra, winter 1937.
It was with Hestra’s fresh air that
every thing started. In the early
1930s, this small village located
in the highlands region of Sweden
called Småland, was known for its
fine air quality. Tourists came here
to relax and hike up to the lookout
tower on the hill Isaberg. Spread out
in every direction was vast evergreen
forests with lakes, rivers and large
marshes. It still looks like this today.
Martin Magnusson moved here
in 1935, with his wife Anna and
children, Lars-Olof, Göte, Gudrun
and Ragnhild. A few years earlier,
Martin had suffered from severe
asthma. To continue working on the
family farm had become impossible.
He was forced to find new ways to
support his family.
He knew how important it is to
have well functioning hands. He
had learned this through work as a
forester, in agriculture and during
military service in World War I,
with field service training on skis in
the region of Jämtland.
Of all the places he had visited, it
was in Hestra that he felt best. So,
in 1936 he started the company that
is celebrating its 75 th anniversary
this year.
That same year, a ski run was
constructed on Isaberg. Trees
and bushes were cleared away
and it became one of the first ski
slopes in Sweden. Skiers started
traveling here from Gothenburg
and other cities around Sweden.
In the newspapers, Hestra was
called Småland’s Åre. Soon, Martin
realized that the skiers would also
benefit from the durable gloves from
Hestra. When they were not helping
out at the comp any his children,
especially sons Lars-Olof and Göte
were more than happy to go skiing
6
7

Martin Magnusson
Founded the company
in 1936 in
Hestra, when he
was 43 years old.
This photo was
taken during a
trip to Stockholm,
in front of the
Royal Palace.
Ingemar Stenmark
The world’s greatest
alpine skier
of his time had his
breakthrough while
wearing gloves
from Hestra. The
blue-yellow gloves
quickly became
a favorite.
at Isaberg. Göte was one of the top
skiers in southern Sweden. Lars-
Olof and Göte understood early on
the demands that quality ski gloves
needed to meet.
It was literally a family business,
where Martin, Anna and their four
children worked together. Lars-Olof
made his first gloves at age 16, and
soon had the help of his younger
brother. The glove factory was even
connected to their house.
Over time, word of the durable
gloves from Hestra spread. The glove
range was broadened, for example,
when five-finger Slalom gloves were
launched in the 1950s. The company
expanded and business contacts
were made abroad. In 1963, after
Martin Magnusson passed away, the
children took over the company.
Lars-Olof had been with Hestra since
he was ten years old. Now, he took
over management of the company,
along with Göte and their brother-inlaw
Lennart Eriksson.
In the mid-1960s, the sport of downhill
skiing began to grow in Sweden,
as well as in many other countries.
The World Cup that started in
1966 evolved into a television
hit. Competitors like Frenchman
Jean-Claude Killy, Karl Schranz of
Austria and Canadian Nancy Greene
became international celebrities.
As dedicated skiers, Lars-Olof
and Göte made sure that the gloves
from Hestra followed suit. For
example, Hestra was among the
first to offer a glove with articulated
fingers, a Japanese innovation from
the early 1970s. Lars-Olof began
collaborating with the Swedish
National Ski Team, where experiences
were exchanged with athletes
and coaches. Hestra began a similar
partnership with the Norwegian National
Ski Team in 1981 and both the
Swedish and Norwegian teams are
still using Hestra gloves today.
The big leap forward in Swedish
alpine skiing came with Ingemar
Stenmark. He won his first World
Cup race in December 1974. This was
followed by a magical decade, where
Ingemar was the world’s foremost ski
racer and Sweden received hundreds
of thousands of new skiers.
In neighboring countries the “stenmark
effect” was also felt – even if
the people there were not cheering
quite as enthusiastically in front of
the television as in Sweden.
It was a “stenmark effect” even
for Hestra. When Ingemar got ready
in the starting box, his blue and
yellow gloves with the former Hestra
logo were clearly visible. All young
racers wanted this model. Hestra
also sought to meet the needs of
new skiers by making quality gloves
not only for the elite, but also for
those who went on a ski vacation
for a week or two every year. The
company now developed into the
leading glove manufacturer in the
Nordic countries.
Lars-Olof’s two sons, Svante and Claes
Magnusson joined the company in
the 1980s. Just as their father, Svante
and Claes had spent much time in the
Hestra offices as children and also
between the slalom gates on Isaberg.
The brothers benefited greatly from
their long experience with gloves,
skiing and outdoor activities. Svante
and Claes-designed new glove models.
Some of them became popular and
are still available in modified versions
today. Materials such as Gore-Tex
and Windstopper started being used.
And Hestra began making gloves for
Lars-Olof Magnusson
Born in 1925 and
made his first glove
at age 16. He is
still active in the
company and even
in the cross-country
ski tracks around
Hestra.
new solutions
Gloves have
changed a lot since
quality, craftsmanship
and genuine
materials continue
to be important
themes for us.
other activities such as cross-country
skiing and cycling. Svante and Claes
also worked to establish the company
outside of Scandinavia.
Today, our gloves are sold in over
20 countries. The company has
subsidiaries in Germany and the
USA, while the head office remains
in the community of Hestra.
Hestra wants to provide gloves
for all types of activities, weather
and nature. Therefore, our collection
consists of almost 400 models.
Since 1997, our Design Director,
Marianne Knutsson-Hall has been
responsible for product development
with Svante and Claes as
independent sounding boards.
In our development we even work
together with professional skiers,
adventurers and other experts.
Over the years we have received
valuable help from ski racers like
Anja Pärson and freeriders like
Seth Morrison, as well as alpinist
Stéphane Schaffter, adventurer Vera
Simonsson, Vasaloppet cross-country
race winner Daniel Tynell and
many more. You will meet some of
them in this catalog, others you can
read about on our website. Feel free
to take away some of their knowledge
about the hands and gloves.
Now, the fourth generation of
Magnussons is on their way into
the company. Svante and Claes
each have two sons. In different
ways, they each follow the legacy
of Martin Magnusson, their greatgrandfather.
A heritage of craftsmanship,
tradition and quality. But also about
looking towards the future and
constantly moving forward.
And the air in Hestra? It is just as
refreshing as it was 75 years ago. ■
Foto: Mattias Fredriksson
Mattias Fredriksson has collaborated
with Hestra for the last ten years.
As a photographer he visits a lot of
snowy mountain regions every year,
from Canada in the west to Japan in
the east. However, his childhood ski
trips were much closer to home.
“My neighbor was a ski instructor.
I used to go with him to the local
slopes as often as I could. I grew
up in Växjö, Sweden and we would
often travel to Isaberg an hour and
a half away. Isaberg was the first
larger ski area I went to. The time I
spent there prepared me for bigger
mountains”, says Mattias.
Good ski pictures require hard
work, both in front of and behind
the camera. There are many long
hours in sub-zero temperatures,
often in rough weather. Mattias
must be able to perform fine motor
movements with his hand. His
profession places big demands on
his gloves.
“If it is cold, I always wear a mitten
model made of leather. I usually
use Henrik Windstedt’s Pro Model
glove, which keeps my hands really
warm. I also bring a couple of liners
with me in my pocket. I’ll put them
on when I am going to hold cold
materials for a long time.”
Mattias says he regularly treats his
gloves with glove balm. Another tip
is to use the handcuffs that come
with many of Hestra’s models.
With them, he never risks losing
his gloves.
“For me as a photographer, they
are priceless. I can quickly take off
my gloves when the camera comes
out, and just as quickly put them
back on when I’m done.” ■
Hestra
Småland’s Åre
The first ski run on Isaberg was
inaugurated in 1938. Since then,
nine runs have been added.
Photo: Gösta Fries
“World Sensation on Isaberg!” This
was the headline in Gothenburg’s
largest newspaper on January 24th,
1938. The day before, a reporter
from the paper had covered the
inauguration of the new ski slope in
Hestra. Over 500 people travelled
by train from Gothenburg, and
thousands of visitors from the
countryside flocked to the event.
The high point of the festival
was a display from the Norwegian
skiers Tomm Murstad and little
Marius Eriksen, today considered
two of the pioneers of downhill
skiing in Scandinavia. At the time,
they traveled around and performed
ski acrobatics, not unlike today's
jib-shows.
The newspaper’s photographer
managed to capture Tomm Murstad
in the middle of a somersault in the
air. Afterwards, there were heated
discussions. Had it been a forward
flip or a back flip? The acrobatics
were so stunning that no one
seemed to know for sure.
The snowy town of Hestra had
now attracted tourists for many
years. With the creation of a slalom
slope, the next step was taken. The
younger citizens of Hestra were
enthusiastic. For two years they had
helped to build the slope. Hestra Ski
and Sports Club, one of the first ski
club in Sweden, was created and
among its first members were
36
ALPINE RACING
Lars-Olof and Göte Magnusson.
Slalom racing was still young in
Sweden, imported from the Alps in
the early 1930s. The youth of Hestra
tried it out. It was important to have
a good stopping technique, however.
The farmer who owned the land
beneath the hill did not want any skiers
on his property. He had put up a
barbed wire fence to keep them out.
The ski club began organizing
competitions, after being instructed
by experts from Åre. In 1956, the Regional
Championships in downhill
skiing was held. Göte Magnusson
came in third in the slalom and won
the unofficial downhill race. It only
took him 21.7 seconds for him to ski
down the 390-meter hill, a result
that stands up well to this day.
In 1968, the first ski lift was
installed, as well as a new family
slope. The next winter a facility was
built, which is now called Isaberg, as
well as several more lifts. Since then,
snow cannons, new slopes, modern
chair lifts, warming huts, cabins,
restaurants, as well as après-ski
entertainment have all complimented
Isaberg – everything that is needed to
make Hestra into a complete resort,
albeit in a small format.
Although the vertical drop is
modest in international standards,
Isaberg offers some of the best
slopes in southern Sweden. Both the
Swedish and Danish championships
in downhill skiing have been held
here and Isaberg is now one of the 15
most visited ski resorts in Sweden.
The slopes have nurtured many
talented skiers, and have been a
natural meeting place for people
who live here. Skiing is an obvious
part of life in Hestra, just like the
ski resorts in the Alps.
For those of us who work in Hestra,
Isaberg will always be our “local
hill”. Our history is closely linked
to Isaberg and here we can easily
test new prototypes. Of course,
nowadays we don’t have to worry
about barbed wire at the end of
the runs. ■
Hestra Ski and
Sports Club offers
training groups for
skiers from age
seven and up. Its
members come
not only from Hestra,
but also from the
entire region.
Annie Stjerneby
Hestra rider in exile
Annie Stjerneby has been a
member of the Hestra Ski and
Sports Club (SKK) since childhood.
But in recent years she has spent
most of her time away from home.
For the past four years, she has
studied at the Skiing High school in
Järpen, Sweden. In total, she spends
more than 250 days a year on skis,
including competitions. Mostly,
she likes the feeling of freedom she
gets when going really fast.
“The feeling when you accelerate
down the slope is like when
a horse gallops across a field.
There are no limits, you’re in
control and you have the entire
mountain to explore.”
Bumps and bruises are a daily
reality for Annie and her training
partners. And even the hands are
affected. Sometimes, skiers hit
their hand on the ground during
a deep turn. Each fall also means
that the hands take a big impact.
In total, Annie has eight different
gloves, which she uses for different
occasions.
“Competition gloves have protection
for the fingers and hands, and
are good when skiing hard during
competitions and training. But
when I go free, I want as lightweight
and flexible a glove as possible.
Then, I would rather choose
a ski glove without protection.” ■
Cross-country skiing on Isaberg
Swedish National Cross-Country
Ski Team member Maria Rydqvist
grew up in Smålandsstenar, 35
kilometers south of Hestra. There,
she began training and competing
in cross-country skiing when she
was only seven years old. In her
early teens she began commuting
to Isaberg to train on tougher terrain.
On Isaberg there are approximately
20 kilometers of groomed
cross-country ski trails.
“In the winter I would do tempo
training on the hilly terrain at Isaberg.
In the summer, I went roller skiing or
Nordic Walking up the ski slope.”
Last winter was Maria’s best
yet, with sixth place in the 15km
event at the World Championships
in Oslo. Before that, she had taken
three podiums with the relay team
in the World Cup, and came in
eighth place in the grueling Tour de
Ski in the Italian Val di Fiemme. In
addition, in the summer of 2010 she
became a mother for the first time.
“Becoming a mother gave me a
great motivation. It was a big challenge
to train hard and be a mother
at the same time”, says Maria.
Hestra collaborates with the
Swedish National Ski Team. Over
the years, Maria has tested many
pairs of cross-country ski gloves.
Nowadays she lives in the region of
Sweden called, Dalarna, which is
known for its extreme cold.
“You don’t even feel really good
gloves. They keep the cold out
while providing direct contact with
your poles”, says Maria. ■
3Tips from the
adventurer
Vera
Simonsson
1. Keep an eye on your hands
It a good idea to be very aware
of your hands. Frostbite can be
fatal in the wilderness.
2. Three layers in cold weather
The layering principle is
important in the cold. With an
inner glove made of wool and
a durable outer glove, you can
fully enjoy the winter.
3. Avoid bare skin
Sometimes you have to take
off the thicker gloves, for
example, to repair a tent pole.
Remember to keep your liners
on when handling materials
that conduct the cold.
The hands should last
Universal gloves that can handle all conditions don’t exist.
Technology can never replace your own knowledge and
experience. We brought together survival expert Lars Fält
and climate physiologist Ingvar Holmér to talk about the
hands, the cold and hand care.
What happens in the hands?
Good gloves can be vital. According to survival
expert Lars Fält , the most common reason that
people freeze to death is that they can no longer
use their hands.
2. In the cold, the brain can
cut off the circulation in the
fingertips, which subsequently
reduces the blood
flow to your hands. Blood
circulation is saved for the
body’s core.
1. The fingertips have a
network of very fine blood
vessels. As long as you’re
warm in the rest of the
body, these vessels are
kept open.
Ingvar Holmér
received his PhD in
sports physiology in
1974. Today, he is a
professor of climate
physiology at Lund
University. There,
Sweden's most
advanced climate
chamber for testing
humans can be
found. Hestra uses
this institute for the
testing of materials
and prototypes.
52
Hands and feet are the first to be
affected when you are out in the
cold. They are located
far from the so-called
body core, with all the
vital organs. The fine
mesh of blood vessels
in the fingers and toes
turns off if it gets too
cold.
“Simply put, the
body sacrifices less
important parts while
trying to save what is
necessary for survival”,
says Lars Fält. Lars has
trained outdoorsmen
and paratroopers in survival for
more than 40 years and works with
Hestra as an equipment expert.
First you have problems with fine
motor skills. This occurs when the
fingers reach a temperature under
-20 degrees Celsius.
“The next step is that grip
strength deteriorates and you can’t
be bothered to lift and hold things.
In the end you are struck by a loss
of sensation. When the temperature
of the fingers is under 7–8
degrees Celsius you risk frostbite”,
says Ingvar Holm, who is one of
Sweden’s foremost experts on how
the body reacts to the cold.
Are there other ways to tell if the
hands are severely cold?
LF: Try to put the tip of your
thumb and little finger together.
Do you feel a little resistance? If
the resistance becomes so great
that you cannot get your fingers
together, then you have a problem.
This is an old trick that Indians
used to keep track of how the cold
was affecting them.
IH: Remember that you can risk
frostbite in the hands even if your
body is warm. Electricians, tower
workers and others who work with
cold materials, without gloves, can
get very cold hands.
LF: One problem is that many
people are not used to working
with gloves on. They cannot even
manage to work with a ski binding
without taking their gloves off.
Photo: Gösta Fries
4. In the wrist there
are also some blood
vessels. Gloves that
let in cold air and/
or snow at the wrist
cools the hands and
then gradually the
body as well.
3. A clear sign that your
hands are too cold is that
you have problems with
fine motor skills. By then,
your finger temperature
is already down to 15–20
degrees Celsius.

Lars Fält
is a survival expert
who has written
several books on the
outdoors. He got his
start at the Ranger
military school in
Kiruna, Sweden in
1965 and continued
to teach soldiers
at the Paratrooper
School in the town
of Karlsborg before
he became head
of the Swedish
Defense Force’s
survival school.
54
Are there differences between the
old and young, men and women or
other groups?
IH: Women often have smaller
fingers and hands than men and
are therefore more sensitive to cold
temperatures. Reynaud’s syndrome
is also more common in women. A
person with Reynaud’s syndrome
has poor circulation in
the peripheral parts of
the body, such as toes
and fingers.
As you get older there
is less circulation and it
affects one’s abi lity to
keep the hands warm.
Ingvar Holmer and
Lars Fält agree: what
determines how warm
a glove is depends on
how much air it can
trap. This can be done through a
combination of materials and structures.
But in general, one can say
that the layering principle increases
the glove’s ability to trap air.
IH: I usually recommend people
to use double gloves. A thin glove
next to the skin and a thicker, outer
glove that insulates and protects
from wind and water. If it is really
cold, like on a polar expedition, you
can use three layers.
LF: Many people buy gloves where
the liner and outer glove are sewn
together. It may work in town, but
when you’re in the woods, you must
be able to remove the liner to dry it.
They must also be able to adapt to
the weather. Thin gloves are good
for high-intensity activities, but if it’s
really cold out there, only thick mittens
will work, where the fingers are
nestled against each other and help
warm the air. Remem ber that leather
gloves insulate better against contact
cooling than many synthetics do.
IH: The size is also important,
you should not buy gloves that are
too tight. There must be room inside
for air. However, the inner layer, the
thin liner, can be tight.
What does the future hold?
IH: Gloves that are heated by
small batteries can be very useful
for certain groups who work
outdoors in cold climates. They
can also help those with Reynaud’s
syndrome. We started looking at
this idea fifteen years ago, but the
electronics and the design of the
heating elements were not good
enough. However, progress has
been made.
LF: The material can only do 40
percent of the work, 60 percent you
do yourself. You have to warm yourself
up, and you have to know what
to wear and when to wear it. Some
hope that technology and material
progress will solve all problems.
But there is no single glove and no
single material that can save you in
every situation.
On many occasions, Lars Fält has
spoken warmly of the importance
of caring for equipment, some thing
he learned from his the time in
the military.
LF: Unfortunately, caring for
equipment is something that many
have forgotten. Today, many are
much worse at taking care of their
gear. I impregnate my leather gloves
with leather balm. If they become
wet, I hang them up to dry, but not
over a fire or on a radiator, which
damages the leather. ■
Hestra Glove System
Many of our models are designed to be combined.
The Hestra Glove System is based on the layering
principle. By using multiple gloves, you can control
the temperature. You can increase or decrease
ventilation based on the weather and your activity,
and you can protect your hands against the cold.
Shell Gloves
In severe cold, you can add
a shell glove, which creates
another layer of air. With a
liner and shell glove, warmth
increases by about 50 percent.
The shell glove also protects
against wind and wet snow. Keep
it where you can easily reach it.
Liners
A liner closest to the skin
wicks away moisture and
creates a first, warm air layer.
A thin liner model inside of a
base glove increases warmth
by about 20 percent. Be sure
to choose the right size, so
the liner fits inside of the
base glove.
Base Gloves
A base glove keeps the hand
warm in normal cold temperatures
and provides protection.
There are many combinations
of liners, base gloves and
shell gloves. Choose a model
for the activity and weather
conditions that the hands will
be exposed to.

LINERS
3Tips from
alpinist
StEphane
Schaffter
1. Agile fingers
Even if you climb when it’s really
cold, it is important that your
fingers can move smoothly.
A stiff glove makes you lose
energy.
2. The right materials
It’s good to strike a balance
be tween highly functional
and warm materials. A glove
must deal with both fine motor
movements and be durable.
3. Good grip
The feel and grip in the palm
must be good, so you can deal
with ice axes, carabiners and
other equipment.
most of Hestra’s Junior gloves and
have put them to use in the sand,
“I use them, for example, for braking
test is not something we at Hestra
recommend our users to do).
It is not only the durability of the
gloves that is tested by Simon
and Alfred. Fit and comfort are
equally important when trying out
the various models. An important
criterion is that a glove cannot be
“uncomfortable”:
“I don’t like it when the fingers
crumple up and it becomes difficult
to get on. The liner must be soft”,
says nine year old Alfred, and adds:
“It’s nice when you can pull the
glove over the sleeve of the jacket”.
“It should be quick and easy to
put on the gloves, otherwise you
lose patience. Once, I had a glove
with elastic that was too tight
around the wrist”, says Simon.
Their mother, Mariana Rosendahl,
is responsible for returns at Hestra.
Her and Hestra’s chief designer
Marianne Knutsson-Hall run the
junior tests. They draw conclusions
about changes in materials and
construction after studying the
children’s test gloves.
“To solve the problem of the tight
wrist, we removed the elastic rib
on the gloves. Later, the children’s
version of the model was redesigned
to be roomier around the wrist”,
explains Mariana.
In addition to the hard wear of
everyday life, Alfred and Simon
expose gloves to more washing and
drying than normal, she explains,
adding:
“You would be amazed to see the
kind of wear that children put gloves
through. It would be nearly impossible
to recreate in a laboratory”. ■
MOUNTAINEERING
Kent Malm
Takes work to the bike
Kent Malm
Hestra’s Marketing
Assistant Kent Malm
is an avid cyclist. He
enjoys riding trails
on a hardtail-bike
through the forests
around Ambjörnarp
west of Hestra.
Photo: Gösta Fries
He has nearly collided with a
moose and regularly comes across
birds, deer and rabbits in the
forest. For Kent Malm, a resident of
Ambjörnarp, 25 km west of Hestra,
a ride on his mountain bike is just
as much an encounter with nature.
Around Ambjörnarp there are
about 40 lakes and an abundance
of forest trails where you can get
far away from traffic and people.
The trails outside his property lead
straight into the forest with paths
that meander along between roots
and rocks. A few kilometers away
are sandy trails around lake Visen
and along the creek that flows to
the lake.
“I enjoy going right out into
the solitude of the forest. Over
the years, I’ve gotten lost several
times, especially after one large
storm came and changed the entire
landscape. Nowadays I use a GPS to
be sure I come back home”, he says.
Kent is also happy riding his bike
to work at the Hestra marketing
department, where he keeps in
touch with the Norwegian and
Swedish ski teams and the Hestra
Team Riders. He also shares his
experiences from cycling with
Hestra’s design department.
“I want a tight, sleek glove with
good grip and cushioning”, he says
adding:
“Ideally, I bike wearing models
with long fingers, because I ride
through the forest where it is easy to
rub against branches and to fall over.”
In the spring, summer and autumn,
Kent Malm rides wearing a pair
of Bike Long gloves with lycra on
the top for a maximum fit and grip,
as well as gel padding for shock
absorption. When it gets colder, he
switches over to the Bike Windstopper
Tracker, an all-round windproof
glove with a neoprene cuff.
Hestra manufactures 16 different
models of cycling gloves.
Some have long fingers, others
short. Some go high on the wrist,
others end at the palm. Damping
materials and fit also varies.
Kent Malm has tested them
all. And in the end, there is one
property that he thinks is more
important than all others:
“The best glove is the one you
barely know that you are wearing.” ■
Continuing
a tradition
At the end of World War II there
were about thirty glove manufacturers
in Sweden, where glove makers
produced high quality gloves for
use in the city. During the 1950s
and 60s, competition from low wage
countries increased. As a result, in
Sweden and other Western European
countries the craft almost died
out completely.
We are proud to have carried
on the tradition. Cousins Niklas
Magnusson and Anton Magnusson
belong to the fourth generation.
They have been trained by 78-yearold
Anders Malmgren, whose father
was also a glove maker. Some of
the gloves that Niklas and Anton
make are from Peccary, the most
exclusive type of leather.
The majority of our Hestra Classics
gloves are made by Hungarian
glove makers. Niklas and Anton
have on several occasions studied
the craft in Hungary, considered
by many to be the world’s leader in
glove making.
A glove maker’s work begins with
a moment of reflection. A leather
hide should be well taken care of
and as little as possible should go
to waste. It is an exclusive, yet all
natural material. No two hides are
alike. There are small imperfections
and pigmentation flaws. Perhaps the
scars need to be taken into account.
Different areas of the hide are designed
to stretch different amounts,
for example, leather from the neck
is stiff compared to other areas.
The glove maker rolls out the leather
on a worktable. It is moistened,
stretched and covered in talc to
make it easier to work with. Then,
it is carefully studied. How many
gloves can be made? How should
they be placed? With the naked eye,
an experienced glove maker can
determine how many gloves can be
made from a single leather hide.
After the talc, the hide is measured
and cut lengthwise, also by
hand and without measuring. The
Glove making
Anton (right) and
Niklas Magnusson,
whose greatgrandfather
started
Hestra, training to
be a glove maker.
The leather they
are working with is
called Peccary.
It comes from South
American wild boars
and is the most
exclusive material
used in glove
manufacturing.
leather is stretched and the edges
are pressed out further by using a
basett – a blunt, broad knife. The
width of the leather is measured and
the size is determined. It is then cut
and stretched again. Using a cardboard
template for each size, the
final lines of the glove are marked
and it is taken for punching. Thus,
the glove maker’s work is done.
It may sound simple. But in reality,
this craft takes many years to learn.
The knowledge has been passed
down from the 1600s in France.
It was there that glove making
originated and where the term “the
French Method” came from, which
still goes unsurpassed today.
The next stage is called repressing,
where the glove gets a final
trim using shears. After that, the
seamstress takes over. She sews the
gloves by hand or by machine. Sewing
by hand requires great skill. The
glove is attached to a clamp and is
sewn with a needle and thread. It is
a time consuming job, a pair of peccary
gloves takes about four hours
to sew by hand.
A Piqué seam is a machine stitch,
where the leather is overlapped and
the seam allowance is no more than
one millimeter. The seamstress
attaches the liner, made from wool,
cashmere or lamb fur. The liners
are sewn with a needle and thread,
so that no stitches are visible on the
outside of the glove.
Then the gloves are placed on
heated irons, where they receive
their final form. The leather is
ironed and polished carefully. A
new pair of Hestra Classics gloves
has taken shape. ■
Simple tools
The large shears,
the blunt knife
called a basett and
a ruler calibrated in
French inches are a
glove maker’s most
important tools.
läder
Our natural materials
Within Hestra we have 75 years of experience working
with leather. We know which types are best suited for
different models. Leather hides are the ingredients
and we choose our suppliers very carefully.
„ Peccary, which can be seen in this
picture, is wild boar leather from South
America. It is soft, smooth and warm and
is considered the most exclusive leather.
„ Nubuck is a leather with a visible grain
surface – as well as a blank, smooth
side. It is cut to give a suede-like feeling.
„ Lamb Nappa leather is a thin, soft
leather, with a fine luster. The best Lamb
Nappa comes from Italy and we use it
primarily for our Hestra Classic gloves.
„ Scandinavian Elk is what we call our
elk leather. It is a soft, rich and warm
leather from Sweden. The durability is
not as good as in goat leather, therefore
it works best for the Classic collection.
„ Army Leather is our most durable
leather. It is a specially treated goat
leather that works great for gloves used
in tougher conditions. The leather has
good impregnation properties and a
structure that provides effective protection
against wetness.
„ Cowhide leather is another durable
leather with good impregnation.
We use it for many of our ski gloves.
We prefer to use cowhide from Scandinavia,
where the climate produces the
best leather.
„ Ecocuir® is a trademark protected cowhide
that is tanned without the use of
chromium or synthetic dyes. The leather
is saturated with fat in order to better
withstand moisture.
„ Aniline leather is dyed through the
entire leather structure, not only on the
surface, allowing the leather to retain
its natural characteristics. We always
use this method, which places higher
demands on the raw material than when
it is only surface-dyed.
