The Schubert Ensemble
Schumann: Piano Quartet
Joe Cutler: Slippery Music
for piano quartet
Dvorak: Piano Quartet No 2
A shaken Johannes Brahms
remembers a youthful
heartbreak; Antonin Dvorak
sits back in his country garden
and lets the melodies pour
over him. If chamber music is
“the music of friends”, it simply
doesn’t get more personal
than this. The Schubert
Ensemble has been making
vibrant music together for
nearly three decades; tonight,
they introduce a new friend of
their own: a brilliantly
entertaining new quartet
written specially for them by
the young British maverick
Joe Cutler.
Richard Burton was a giant of
the British & Broadway stage
and one of Wales’ greatest
actors. The Royal Welsh
College of Music and Drama
Burton’s family have endorsed
the naming of our new theatre
from the beginning just who
the murderer is and that he will
murder again and who the
victim will be. We are delighted
commented one listener “but I
reckon he’s the next big
thing.” Christian Blackshaw’s
extraordinary comeback has
been one of the biggest
recent stories in British music,
with critics tumbling over each
other to praise his quiet
mastery and understated
style. Mozart’s surprisingly
dark Sonata K.457 and
Brahms’ visionary late
masterpiece are perfect for
Blackshaw – while Liszt’s
atmospheric musical
The second in the Welsh
explores the range of what
can be achieved by composers
in a strings-only orchestration.
The 8th Symphony is the only
Boyce wrote as an orchestral
piece rather than as part of a
vocal or stage work; Britten,
had completed the draft of this
Sacred sounds for a sacred
the spirit soaring. Majestic,
mysterious and sometimes
gloriously exuberant, this
afternoon of music for chorus,
brass and organ should do
exactly that. The Gothic
the 21st centuries combine to
