Ride returns to Lakeville, MN on
Sunday, April 27th. We again offer
routes of 30, 62, or 100 miles. It’s the
Minnesota bike season’s official kickoff
and TCBC will be there with an exhibit
booth, loads of riders, ride marshals,
and many volunteers. It’s the most
serious bike party of the year and we
welcome your participation.
Hostelling International-Minnesota
organizes and hosts the Ironman
Ride. TCBC serves as co-sponsor and
partner. You can even renew your
TCBC membership through your
Ironman registration. Last year 5400
riders signed up and nearly every one
of them rode. In a rare act of
forgiveness, powers beyond our
control graced us with 80-degree
temps and sunshine. It was a perfect
day for a perfect ride.
Again this year we are offering free
registration for youth riders 17 years
and under if they sign on with a paid
adult rider. In 2007 it attracted over
350 young riders. We were impressed!
Our goal is to encourage youth
participation in cycling with the intent
of getting them “hooked” like you. We
also brought back Team Registration
this year. Over 30 teams signed on in
2007 again bringing new people into
biking. Details on both these
opportunities are found on our
website at www.IronmanBikeRide.org.
Erik’s Bike Shop has joined us in 2008
as our title sponsor. Erik the Bikeman
plans to ride and he invites riders to
join him. And the Pioneer Press has
returned as our media sponsor. This
year we are bringing back the Ironman
jersey and with expanded offerings.
Voler Team Apparel is our custom shop
and we are adding a winter longsleeve
jersey and a sleeveless wind
vest. Final jersey graphics are posted
on our website and a few Erik’s stores
have sizes to try on.
Our thanks to TCBC and its members
for your decades of Ironman support.
We look forward to April 27, more great
weather, and another grand biking
celebration. Thanks for joining us.
As I write this, I am sitting here with a
copy of the brand new MINNESOTA
BIKE ATLAS in my hands. WOW, what a
work of art it is---truly a product for
TCBC to be proud of, Hats off to the
16-member Atlas Committee chaired
by Patt Seleen who spent the last year
working on this fine product! It all paid
off as we not only have a great 7th
Edition Atlas, but also an
accompanying interactive CD,
complete with cue sheets and online
mapping to indicate where each route
will take you! Truly outstanding!
THANKS TO ALL OF THE COMMITTEE
MEMBERS FOR THEIR CONTRIBUTIONS.
You made it happen!
Next on the horizon is to market this
great Atlas. The marketing committee
(Lisa Austin, Lisa Anderson, Charles
Breer, Michael McNutt, Patt Seleen and
Ben Wilson) has been working
diligently to ensure the marketplace
becomes aware of (and buys!) this
great book! Speaking of purchasing, if
you’re interested in getting an Atlas,
please see the ad in this newsletter.
Also in process is developing a new
online ride scheduling system, which
will make our ride scheduling
processes much more efficient while
also allowing members to view rides in
a calendar format and by ride type.
The committee, led by Mike Beadles
and consisting of Charles Breer, Greg
Flom, Richard Franco, Scott Larson, Jim
Pederson and myself, is well on their
way to implementing a new system in
time for training the ride leaders on its
use at the Ride Leader forum in early
April.
Lastly, a big “thank you” to the Annual
Recognition Dinner committee for,
once again, pulling this event off
without a hitch. The Annual
Recognition Dinner was held in mid-
January and was a nice opportunity to
SUPERIOR VISTAS
PRESIDENT’S COLUMN
reconnect with cycling friends and
recognize the volunteers for all the
work they do, day-in and day-out, to
keep the club running so smoothly and
contribute to yet another outstanding
year for TCBC. “You Make the
Difference” to the success of our club!
While it goes without saying that our
volunteers do an outstanding job,
there will be a point when they will
want to move on to other things and
we will need to backfill these positions;
plus, new blood is always good in an
organization.
I‘d like to encourage you to consider
volunteering when opportunities arise.
Volunteering is a GREAT way to give
something back to the club and is
personally rewarding---just ask those
people who volunteer! It can also
enhance personal development in
areas such as leadership (leading rides,
leading a committee), team-building,
web design, systems, finance, product
promotion and distribution, sales,
public speaking, etc. From time to
time, volunteer opportunities are
posted in the newsletter and/or on the
web-site, delivered to your email via the
Announcements system, or announced
at rides. However big or small your
contribution may be, it”s all important
to the continued success of TCBC.
Hopefully by the time I write the next
article, we’ll be on our bikes! I better
get on mine soon---I signed up for the
Bicycle Tour of Colorado (nothing
compared to what our Past President,
Charles Breer, undertook last year but
definitely a
challenge for me)
and need to get
some miles in!
We will be making an introductory
presentation to all leaders during the
coming Annual Leadership Forum this
access at the forum, so if you have a
laptop with wireless internet, you may
optionally bring it to follow along! (If
not, don’t worry, we will also project it
onto the big screen). Thank you! (Mike
SEEKING VOLUNTEER Microsoft
Access/SQL Database Technical
Resource: Your TCBC Web-based
Database Team is seeking an
additional volunteer to join the team!
in brief
We are looking for a person who has
some experience in supporting either
Microsoft Access and/or Microsoft SQL
database. The team has made our
decision regarding a pre-packaged
Ride Scheduling database application
to purchase and we are now in the
process of actually purchasing it, then
implementing it. We will need support
for the new database application after
its purchase - with approving and
implementing changes as
recommended by the team. This is
your chance to help your bicycling
club make the transition to a
centralized and web-based database
system for our club’s data! Thank you
for your consideration! If interested,
please contact Mike Beadles at
MrBikey@Gmail.com or at
612-839-5406 to discuss your
qualifications, and our and your
expectations.
Road bike closeouts! Hot Hot Hot!
number since 1986. This was probably
due to the fact that it was only 4
degrees at ride start with a -15 wind
chill, and only two years since 1986 has
the temp been colder than that (in
1993 it was 5 below at noon!).
WINTER WEATHER: December
averaged two degrees colder than
normal, with 18 beautiful inches of
snow. January had exactly average
temps (with some big highs and
frigid lows) and a wimpy two inches
of white stuff.
Beautiful brainerd lakes area ride - a club favorite
In keeping with the all-important
theme of, “It’s never too early to plan a
bike trip”, mark your calendars for June
6-8, 2008, for a weekend of biking,
eating, and socializing in the beautiful
Brainerd Lakes area. The weekend’s
rides will consist of the Tour of Lakes
(TOL) outreach ride on Saturday, June
7, and TCBC rides on Friday afternoon
and Sunday (June 6 and 8,
respectively.)
TOL is sponsored by the Paul Bunyan
Cyclists and offers mileage options of
approx 40 and 70. It is known for its
varied and plentiful rest stops---think
“rolling buffet”! Past rides have
featured such treats as blueberry
pancakes, breakfast burritos, fresh
fruit, beef & chicken tacos, turkey
sandwiches, corn on the cob,
cheesecake, root beer floats, you get
the idea. Come along and be part of
the TCBC contingent rolling down the
road in our club jerseys! For more
information on the TOL and to register,
go to www.paulbunyancyclists.com.
Note that the registration deadline for
the ride is May 1; TOL does NOT accept
registrations after that date.
The format of this year’s trip will be
very similar to that of the past few
years in that we will stay in cabins, do
lots of socializing and eating, have a
potluck dinner and campfire Saturday
night and, of course, ride! Lodging will
be at Good Ol’ Days Resort (www.
goodoldaysresort.com) in Nisswa, just
north of Brainerd. Good Ol’ Days offers
2 & 3 BR cabins, along with lodge
(hotel-style) rooms, all of which were
brand new as of last year. Rates are
$250 for a 2 BR unit for up to 5 people,
$300 for a 3 BR unit for up to 6 people
and $125 for a lodge-style room for up
to 2 people. These rates are slightly
different than those on the resort’s
website. The rates go up sligh tly if the
number of people in a unit exceeds
those previously mentioned.
Each person is responsible for booking
their own lodging. If you are
interested in staying with the group,
you may want to consider reserving a
unit sooner rather than later due to the
demand for lodging in the Brainerd
Lakes area. If you want to find others
to share lodging with, just go to TCBC’s
discussion forums at http://groups.
msn.com/twincitiesbicyclingclub and
click on “message boards”, then “rides
and trips”, or you can contact me (see
contact info below) and I’ll add your
name to the list of people looking for
lodging. As an aside, if you choose to
stay somewhere other than Good Ol’
Days but are interested in joining us on
Friday and/or Saturday nights, there is
a $10/person/day visitor’s fee payable
to the resort.
If you have any questions, feel free to
contact me at maryderks@yahoo.com
or 651-335-6505. Additional trip
information can be found on TCBC’s
web-site under “Overnight Trips” at
http://www.mtn.org/tcbc/schedule/
trips.html. Thanks, and I hope to see
you there!! – Mary Derks
Dear TCBC members:
This is a reminder that it’s time once
again to sign your yearly Release
and Waiver of Liability Form for
TCBC. Yearly signing of this form is
required by the insurance company
that provides our League of
American Bicyclists (LAB) liability
and supplemental medical coverage
for all TCBC members when they
participate in scheduled TCBC
bicycle rides. Our insurance year
runs from Feb. 1 through Jan. 31 of
the following year.
Members need only sign one waiver
per year, unless they attend a
special event wherein all
participants must sign a waiver (i.e.
the Watermelon Ride). You can find
the waiver form on our website

2008 WAIVER TIME

under “Documents” (there are two
forms, make certain to use the one
for members), print it and mail it to
our P.O. Box. Alternatively, you can
sign one on your next TCBC ride and
give it to the leader. All leaders
should have the form available on
all rides.
Simply put, our LAB insurance
policy provides up to $1,000,000 of
liability coverage for our club, its
officers and Board of Directors, and
for members when participating in
a TCBC scheduled bicycle ride. It
also provides a $10,000
supplemental medical coverage
with a $500 deductible that kicks in
after your primary medical
insurance, if you have it, stops
paying for injuries incurred on a
TCBC scheduled bicycle ride.
Additionally, there is a $5,000 per
person accidental death and
dismemberment coverage for
members on scheduled TCBC rides.
If you need further information
about our LAB insurance coverage,
please contact me. Pete Hawkins
MINNESOTA IRONMAN SEEKS VOLUNTEERS
MARK YOUR CALENDARS!
The Minnesota IRONMAN Bike Ride is
Sunday, April 27th, in Lakeville for its
10th year. The 2008 IRONMAN
brochures arrived in riders’ homes
long ago and we’re preparing for
another grand ride. Already cyclists are
gearing up for the official beginning of
spring...the IRONMAN Ride!
As is true with an event of this
magnitude, hundreds of volunteers
help ensure the success of the
IRONMAN each year. Once again,
WE NEED YOU! If you are a returning
volunteer, share the fun by recruiting
some friends or family members. If you
are new to the IRONMAN, we are
ready to welcome you. The IRONMAN
makes a great service project for
church groups, scout troops, and
families too. We strive to provide a fun
event for riders and non-riders alike.
Following is just a sampling of the
many volunteer opportunities
available:
REGISTRATION PROCESSING: Join
the group on most Monday evenings
after 5:00 PM to help process rider
registrations. The location is the HI-MN
office, 622 Selby Ave. St. Paul. These
“work parties” (actually fun social
occasions) will continue until the week
of April 14. Bring a friend. No
experience necessary. We can train
anyone. Call Sarah for the 2008
schedule of Monday nights we plan to
meet...952-545-6151
SATURDAY SETUP: April 26 is a big
volunteer work day in Lakeville,
starting at 8:30 AM at Lakeville High
School. We have registration tables to
set up, merchandise to sort and fold
and bag for each registrant,
merchandise tables to set up, supplies
to pick up and deliver, etc. REST STOP
SETUP: Starting between 1 and 2 PM,
we need a few strong volunteers to
help as we set up the rest stops. There
are hundreds of details all day in
Lakeville, so you’ll have plenty to do
whenever you come. Lunch and
beverages will be provided. The term
‘the more the merrier’ really applies
here. A strong crew helps complete
the work that much faster.
DAY OF RIDE VOLUNTEER
POSITIONS: We provide a window of
support to the riders that starts at 5:30
AM and proceeds nonstop until after
8:00 PM. There are many volunteer
opportunities for riders and non-riders
alike to share in the excitement of this
day-long event. Choose a shift, or stay
all day. Briefly they include: direct
parking, rider registration, post-ride
check-in, distribute t-shirts, rest stop
worker, route corner marshal, ride
marshal (TCBC ride leaders only), first
aid certified medic, sag driver and sag
co-pilot, ham radio operator,
merchandise table and HI silent
auction, TCBC booth, and evening
packup.
CLEAN-UP CREW: Exhaustion sets in
and a fresh crew of volunteers is being
sought again this year to help us clean
up. You’ll be our hero for helping to
pack the trucks at Lakeville HS.
One significant change this year is that
we are dropping the Rider Stuffing
Packet. That means our Stuffing Party
will not happen in 2008. We regret the
loss of the party but believe that a
Virtual Rider Packet will be an
environmentally smart change.
Contact Sarah Hartmann, IRONMAN
Volunteer Coordinator, at
952-545-6151, or sarahart@juno.com to
request the complete volunteer
packet. All volunteers receive a
complimentary IRONMAN or
IRONWOMAN t-shirt. Finally, to
request an IRONMAN registration
brochure, contact the HI-MN office at
RIDE LEADER CLASS OF 2007
2008 TCBC NEW
RIDE Leader Training
Ever thought how nice it would be to
have more TCBC rides in your area or
more rides tuned to your ability? Or
rides on a certain day of the week or
time of day? Or rides that are centered
around a social activity or an event?
Then consider becoming a TCBC Ride
Leader. The array of rides offered by
TCBC is determined solely by its ride
leaders, so if you perceive a need,
please step forward and volunteer to
fill it by taking TCBC Leader Training
this spring.
The training consists of five hours of
class held on Saturday morning, April
5, at a location in Mounds View; plus
attendance at the Leader Forum on
Wednesday evening, April 9, at a
location in Shoreview.
The Saturday class will focus on
preparing you to lead safe, fun, and
interesting rides. Subjects covered
include how to organize, plan, map,
advertise, and lead a bike ride for
TCBC, plus a variety of related subjects.
Strong emphasis will be placed on the
rules of the road, traffic laws, bicycle
safety, and risk management. The
Wednesday session will be attended
by all returning and new leaders and
will cover our new ride scheduling
system and an array of other topics.
To qualify, you must be a current
member in good standing who
preferably has been with TCBC for at
least a full year. Also, you must be
willing to lead a minimum of two rides
for TCBC by the end of October 2008
and to fully abide by TCBC rules and
customs. Please note that the course is
designed for TCBC purposes only and
is not a general “leadership” course.
The total cost is $40 and that includes
a lunch on Saturday. It’s possible to
recoup all $40 by leading at least four
rides by the end of the season on
10/31/08. To register, send a check for
$40 (made out to TCBC) to: TCBC
Leader Training, c/o Pete Hawkins,
3008 County Road I, Mounds View, MN
55112. Be sure to include your current
address, home phone number with
area code, and an e-mail address if you
have one. Expect to receive a letter of
acknowledgement and further details
by March 29. Deadline for registration
is Wednesday, March 26, but it’s
advisable to sign up well before that as
the class may fill up. Phone Pete
Hawkins at 763-786-3792 or e-mail him
at pmh706@gmail.com if you have
further questions.
New Minnesota Bike
Atlas Available Now
The 7th Edition of the Minnesota Bike
Atlas is coming soon to a bike shop or
bookstore near you!
The Atlas is the result of a yearlong
collaborative project of TCBC and
Hostelling International-Minnesota.
Led by project manager Patt Seleen,
art director Steve Scott, map maker
Pete May, and map coordinator Ben
Wilson, volunteers put in hundreds of
hours of work to take the Atlas from
concept to reality. The finished
product was unveiled at the TCBC
Annual Recognition Dinner on January
18. Lucky banquet attendees were
among the first to have the
opportunity to obtain one of the 6,000
copies printed.
All new routes. The Atlas contains
over 100 new routes, incorporating
both roads and trails. As in previous
editions, the maps are organized
geographically (Metro Area, Northeast,
Southeast, Northwest, Southwest, and
Wisconsin) to help you decide where
you want to go.
Easy-to-read maps include a description
of each ride with rest stops and scenic
highlights clearly marked.

Interactive CD. This edition of the
Atlas introduces a terrific new feature:
An interactive CD with maps and cue
sheets!
Ride legend. The beginning of each
section of the Atlas includes a ride
legend that will allow you to identify
the features of each ride at a glance.
Looking for a flat road ride in the
Northwest metro with restrooms at the
ride start, low traffic, scenic highlights,
and snacks worth stopping for en
route? You’ll quickly find your route by
consulting the ride legend.
Proceeds from this edition of the
Minnesota Bike Atlas will benefit both
TCBC and Hostelling International-
Minnesota as they further their local
missions and continue to promote
bicycling as an important part of this
community. The Atlas will be available
on the TCBC website (complete the
mail the order form), at local bike
shops and bookstores for $19.95 plus
tax. You can also purchase the Atlas
for $20.00 (no tax or postage) at the
TCBC Swap Meet, the TCBC Leader
Forum, and the Ironman Bike Ride.
SIGNIFICANT TOTALS
2007 was yet again the biggest year
ever for TCBC. All of our 2006 records,
monthly and yearly, were smashed last
year. A total of 207 people biked over
1000 TCBC miles, including 51 women.
www.gatewaycycle.com
There were 60 bikers over 3000 miles
and 30 riders over 4000.
TOTAL RIDES exploded from 1400 in
2006 to 1935 last year, and five straight
months had over 230 rides. Around 100
leaders led at least four rides, and 40 of
them led at least 20 rides. 40 people
went on at least 100 rides. People on
TCBC rides, members or not, combined
did about 700,000 miles last year!
YEARS OVER 2000 MILES: Sue Blum is
now alone in first place with 13 years.
Lee Thielman is just behind her with 12.
YEARS OVER 3000 MILES: Sue Blum
extended her record to 12 years. Tony
Stifter is alone in second place with 11.
YEARS OVER 4000 MILES: Mike
Nizielski tied Tony Stifter for the lead
with 8 years partly due to Tony’s run-in
with a pothole.
YEARS OVER 5000 MILES: Katie
Angle, Jeff Johnson, and Scott Larson
are now tied for third with 4 years, and
the record is still 6.
MEN’S MILEAGE CHAMPION: Richard
Miller rode 191 rides, averaging 52
miles per ride, the highest average for
a mileage winner ever. His winning
total of 10,072 miles was the thirdhighest
men’s total ever. He finished
third in 2006.
WOMEN’S MILEAGE CHAMPION:
Katie Angle led the women by doing
205 rides, the third-highest women’s
total ever, and averaged 40 miles per
ride. She also had the third-highest
women’s total ever with 8,325 miles.
This was Katie’s fourth straight win
- more total mileage wins than any
other TCBC biker in history.
“THE TEN DEGREE RULE”?
led a Monday night ride with another
I TCBC leader every week this winter,
so far. Last night (January 14) it was
doubtful whether we would ride or
not. It was 4 degrees at the ride start,
and 0 at the ride finish while I was
sitting inside my nice warm van.
I had received four phone calls before
the ride asking if it would be going. I
told the first caller that I was
cancelling, then after a query from a
second caller, I decided that I should
call George (my other leader last night)
to see what he thought. We decided
that we should try, so I called back the
previous callers and said that the ride
is now a “go”!
There were five riders total, including
one new rider to TCBC. We started with
me as the front leader, and George as
the rear leader. The other riders were
Gregg, Michael, and a new rider
named Jonathan.
I had a mechanical problem about two
miles into the ride, where the
freewheel froze up, and even though I
hours
m-f
sat
sun
was pedalling, it did not “engage”, so I
was just spinning the pedals for
nothing. We stopped, discussed my
situation, decided my bike was “toast”
and that I would have to walk my bike
back home. I asked Michael to take
over as front leader at that point, with
George still the rear leader. I said
“Have fun!” and off they went.
I ended up walking back to the ride
start, then walking back home (about
five miles total walk). After I got back
home, I hopped into my van, and
drove back to the ride start, getting
there about 7:15 PM.
The riders returned about 8:00 PM
- they had more mechanical problems!
Jonathan’s freewheel had frozen up
too, just like mine. George’s cables got
frozen/stuck. But they were on the LRT
bike trail near Freewheel Bike, so some
wrenching and a few minutes in the
store thawed things out enough for
them to be able to continue.
I now remember why I have my “10
degree rule” - Stuff Stops Working
Below Ten Degrees! (Unless one has a
single-speed or fixed-gear, then it’s
“less likely” that one would have these
problems in these extreme
temperature conditions.)
I also think that bringing my bike
inside the Erik’s store at the ride start
for a half hour may have contributed to
my problem too. My bike would have
thawed in the store for too long, and
the humidity would have condensed
onto the metal parts and frozen
immediately when taken back outside.
Funny thing - I had my bike in the back
of the van while I was waiting in the
parking lot for the riders to return, with
the heat running, I heard two distinct
spring-ping-pop sounds from the rear
of the van after a few minutes of sitting
there, so I assume that’s the freewheel
springs/mechanism thawing enough
and popping back into place. My
“night ride” bicycle pedals fine today!
