Board of Commissioners March 26, 2013
Natural Resources Trust Fund for development of a two mile rail trail along the west side of the
Saginaw River from Kochville Road in Zilwaukee Township to the Saginaw-Bay County line.
We met with Mr. Schmude who informed the committee that the Saginaw County Parks and
Recreation Commission would serve as the applicant agency to the Michigan Department of
Natural Resources Trust Fund in applying for funding of the development of the two mile rail
trail. The maximum loan amount, which could be granted by the state, is $300,000.00 with a
required local match of approximately $100,000 - $150,000. The local match will be provided
by the Great Lakes Bay Regional Trail Group. No county funds will be used. It is anticipated
that if the funding is approved construction could start as early as FY 2014.
We recommend the proper County officials be authorized and directed to serve as the applicant
agency to apply for funding with the Michigan Department of Natural Resources Trust Fund to
develop the two mile rail trail as described above. The appropriate resolution will be submitted
under the regular order of business to accomplish same.
