Parish Pilgrimage to
Walsingham 2012
Decorating in the
Vicarage … and in the
church.
2
By the time the June edition of About St John’s appears Father Robin
Jones will be the Vicar and we will be embarking upon a new chapter
in the life of the parish. We should do all that we can to welcome Father
Robin and his family and to support him as he leads us forward in
worship and mission. I hope that as many of the congregation as
possible will be present on the evening of May 24 to support Father
Robin at his induction and to welcome the many visitors who will be
coming to St John’s for the occasion. We will be serving refreshments
in the Parish Room after the induction and Marigold Seal would be
grateful for any offers to contribute food for this (and for the Diamond
Jubilee tea on Sunday 3 June).
This is also the moment to give thanks to God for all the good people,
priests and laymen and women, who have supported us during the
interregnum. It has been a great encouragement that in difficult times
so many people stepped forward to take on new responsibilities and
have worked tirelessly to maintain the worship and life of the parish.
They are too numerous to mention by name, but an exception must
be made for Father Barry, whose faithful service and wise words have
been a source of strength to us throughout the interregnum We owe
a debt of gratitude to him and to all the others who have helped us.
Looking back over the last year, I take particular satisfaction in the
fact that St John’s supported the creation of the loavesNfishes food
bank last summer and has continued to support it and provide it with
a home. These are hard times for some people in Sevenoaks, espe-
cially in our parish, and the food bank helps by providing families in
need with a weekly bag of groceries. When the Bishop of Rochester
made his visit to Sevenoaks Deanery at the end of March he commended
the food bank at St John’s as an example of how the
churches are reaching out to the community as part of their Christian
mission. Up to now the main contributor to the food bank has been
one of the local supermarkets, but the amount of food received from
this source has recently diminished and we therefore need to increase
the supply from other sources. Fortunately parents at Sevenoaks
School are now making regular donations and some other local
schools have agreed to help, but we too need to continue to do our bit
at St John’s and to encourage other churches to help as well. The
loavesNfishes basket will continue to be put out at the back of the
church every Sunday and donations of cash are also welcome.
April has, appropriately enough, been a time for spring-cleaning at St
John’s. Steeplejacks have been up to the bell turret and restored the
bell to working order. I felt giddy watching them, as they put ladders
in places where I would not
have thought it possible. We
plan that, after a long silence,
the bell will come to life again
at Father Robin’s induction.
Graham Davison has also been
ascending the heights, this
time inside the church, as he
and Simon Raikes built a scaffolding
tower in the sanctuary
and painted over the ugly
brown stains high up on the
north wall on either side of the
chancel arch. A team of volunteers
has been helping Father
Robin to paint the walls of the
4
Vicarage. And a lot of effort went into making the church beautiful for
our Easter celebrations.
So, when Jacqueline and I hand the keys of the church to Father
Robin on 24 May, I like to think that they will be the keys to a church
which is a fitting place for the worship of God and with a congregation
in good spirit. Of course we face challenges, but I pray that with the
help of God and under the leadership of Father Robin we will be able
to tackle them with courage and determination.
Annual Parish Pilgrimage
to Walsingham
13-15 April 2012
We commenced our Pilgrimage with a combined service of a said Mass at St.
John’s conducted by Canon Brian Stevenson followed by a blessing for our
journey to Walsingham. At approximately 10.15am the Happy Band of Pilgrims
departed by coach. It was lovely to see both old and new friends.
There was a lunch stop at Barton Mills; some of us had taken a packed lunch
so we had a picnic and other people bought their lunch at the snack bar.
Once more we set off on our journey, having a written quiz on the coach.
The coach was very comfortable, with an excellent lady driver.
Having arrived in Walsingham in good time after allocation of rooms and
keys in the green room we assembled for the first visit to the Shrine
Church and a tour of the Shrine and the village for those who wished. At
5pm we grouped for The Stations of the Cross and intercessions read by
David Bonner. Supper was later and those who again wished could meet in
the Norton Room.
Saturday morning after breakfast we made our separate ways to the Slipper
Chapel from where we walked along the disused railway line back to the
village reciting the Rosary.
There was then free time in which to have
lunch, followed by games and fellowship in the Orangery.
The Pilgrim Mass was at 6pm followed by supper and a candlelit procession
in the grounds, followed by the Ministry of Healing.
Sunday Sung Mass was held in the Parish Church of St Mary’s and was attended
by many pilgrims.
Or one could go to the Chantry Mass at the
Shrine. After Mass we all enjoyed a roast beef Sunday lunch.
At 2.30am there was Sprinkling at The Holy Well. This was later followed
6
y Procession of the Blessed Sacrament and Benediction. By now it was
time for the final visit to the shrine. It was good to see Carolyn and Oliver
serving as cross bearer and acolyte. All seemed to have passed so quickly
since we made that first visit. Our pilgrimage had been so rewarding and a
joyful one.
The group photograph was taken. A happy band of pilgrims boarded the
coach and departed for Sevenoaks. We stopped for a short break on the
way home and arrived back at St. John’s after a good journey home.
I am sure everyone felt refreshed and happy from our week-end. The programme
gave one time to reflect and have personal time. I personally always
make time for sitting on the bench in the gardens donated on behalf
of my friend Joyce who died some years ago now. I find the time to be
both quiet and reflective.
Bishop Lindsay, the Shrine administrator, sends his best wishes to everyone
at St. John’s. So another year of our annual pilgrimage is over until next
year. A rewarding Pilgrimage enjoyed by all. Why not join us next time?
Everyone would be most welcome. Any questions about the week-end please
approach any of the committee or indeed anyone who came on the pilgrimage.
St John’s CE Primary School
Congratulations to St John’s School!
The summer term at St John’s has been full-on since the moment the doors
opened.
Years 4, 5 and 6 have been to Ironbridge for three days this week and by
all accounts the trip has gone well with a huge variety of experiences on offer
– including the rain.
Clare Strange’s Sports Partnership Olympic Torch has been in the school
this week and on 20 th July the school will be helping to celebrate the Olympic
Torch coming through Sevenoaks.
The SIAS Church Inspection took place during the first week of term and I
am happy to report that the Inspector’s findings mirrored last term’s Ofsted
report. The word “good” was used for every department of this thorough
inspection and as in the Ofsted report “outstanding” was there too.
We can be extremely proud of all that the Head Teacher Sally Quirk and
her team have achieved in such a short space of time. Their dedication and
commitment to the cause sets the tone for all aspects of school life. Their
ability to understand each child as an individual and the self confidence that
this gives to each child makes St John’s the success it has become.
The parents give tremendous help and work so well with the school which all
goes towards creating the family atmosphere which is there for all to see at
St John’s. Smiling faces are all around and the children have an excellent
work ethic along with calm, respectful behaviour to those around them.
If anyone would like to visit the school and see the children and staff at
work or play they are most welcome but please contact the school first.
We are delighted to be able to share the final Ofsted report with you,
which we feel reflects very well on our school. We can officially say that St
John’s is a good school with outstanding features. Under the new Ofsted
framework, in operation since January 2012, we are told that a number of
schools have been downgraded, which makes our achievements at St John’s
all the more exceptional.
I would just like to share an email with you:
Good morning Sally
Congratulations on the outcome of the Ofsted inspection for St
John’s. We are all really delighted for you, the staff and the children.
To be judged ‘Good’ under the new framework is a considerable
achievement. Well done and do pass on our congratulations to everyone
at St John’s.
Have a well deserved break when it comes!
Best wishes,
Alex
Alex Tear, Director of Education Diocese of Rochester
What we do well (and sometimes outstandingly well):
“This is a school that it is not resting on its laurels.”
• Pupils flourish both socially and academically.
• Pupils achieve well and develop a love of learning.
• Most teaching is good or better.
• Teachers plan exciting lessons that engage and motivate pupils well.
• Pupils make good, and sometimes outstanding, progress in most lessons.
• Teachers have good expectations of the more able and challenge them well.
• Teaching successfully promotes pupils’ spiritual, moral, social and cultural
development and encourages an understanding of values such as respect,
kindness and trust.
9
Behaviour and safety
• Teachers manage pupils’ behaviour highly effectively
• Pupils are sociable and articulate and develop good confidence and selfesteem.
• Pupils are enthusiastic learners and their positive attitudes ensure that time
is rarely wasted in lessons
• Pupils are polite and courteous, and they support each other well.
• The school has effective systems for promoting good behaviour
• The school focuses strongly on keeping pupils safe.
• The governing body ensures that safeguarding arrangements meet requirements.
Leadership and management
• Strong leadership
• The headteacher and other senior leaders are passionate about getting the
best for their pupils and they embrace with enthusiasm new initiatives.
• The governing body provides good challenge and support to the school and
plays a good part in planning for the future.
Parent and Pupil Comments
‘The school is obviously growing in stature and we are delighted that our
child is here.’ – Parent
‘I believe my son is making good progress because of the diligence of
his teachers.’ - Parent
‘Teachers always go that extra mile.’ - Parent
‘Lessons are fun.’ - Pupil
‘Bullying is very rare and is tackled quickly because adults listen to us.’ – Pupil
I am full of thanks and admiration of this amazing school team. Going the
extra mile, as endorsed by the inspection findings, is the culture of this
school.
The partnership between parents and school is a key part of our successes.
If anyone has any questions about the report, please do not hesitate to contact
me.
Lent Pilgrimage to Aylesford Priory
Saturday 24 th March 2012
It was a beautiful day and after a detoured journey we met up in the
large car park at the Friars, Aylesford with several friends from St.
John’s.
The day was organised by Forward in
Faith with Revd. Canon David Herbert,
the regional Dean, giving the addresses
and sermon at the three services
in the lovely St. Joseph’s Chapel.
The theme for the services (Morning
Prayer, concelebrated noon Mass and
Evensong) and for the day was The
Way, The Truth and The Life from
John 14.
Following the noon Mass and The Angelus
it was time for lunch which was
available from the Shrine Café but we
from St. John’s met together for a
picnic lunch in lovely Spring gardens
which had a display of a variety of
12
plants and a pond with wildlife including ducks, a woodpecker, birds
and two black swans.
During the day there was time to visit the pottery, tea-room, gift shop
or to just relax in the gardens.
After a most rewarding pilgrimage on the way home we were delayed
in the traffic in the village of Eccles, which was our only exit from the
Friars. A double decker bus and a large tractor could not pass one another
in the restricted village lane so everyone had to wait for the police
to arrive, which they did after about 15mins.
This item I unfortunately submitted too late to be in the April
Magazine — so this is somewhat old news after the event!
CAN YOU HELP?
We shall need refreshments for
the reception after Fr. Robin Jones’ Induction
on Thursday, May 24 th
and also for our
Diamond Jubilee Tea Party on Sunday June 3 rd .
It will be marvellous if everyone could supply a
plate of food for these two special occasions.
If you can help in this way, or would like more
information, please speak to Marigold, or sign
the lists at the back of the church.
Thank you.
Please come to celebrate these
two important events.
MONEY MATTERS
The annual church accounts for the year to 31 December
2011 have now been made available, which means that you all have
details of income and expenditure in the past year. We must now
look forward to 2012.
In the first quarter of 2012 our average weekly costs were £968 and
our average weekly income was £1,308, which shows an improvement
on the income of the last quarter of 2011. Our surplus in the first
quarter of 2012 was therefore £340.
We are now greatly looking forward to the arrival of our new vicar but
this will increase our weekly costs by about £700.
Thank you very much to all who have recently increased their giving
and would you all please review your stewardship giving to attempt to
cover the anticipated shortfall of £360 per week.
To increase your giving by
1. Banker’s order – please notify your bank accordingly.
2. Stewardship envelope – please adjust the amount in your
weekly envelope.
If you are a taxpayer please ensure that your giving is under gift aid
and this will effectively increase your giving by 25%, as the church
will be able to reclaim your tax.
If you wish to commence giving by means of a banker’s order or complete
a gift aid form for the first time, please collect the appropriate
form from the back of the church and note on the form if you wish to
start using stewardship envelopes.
Please speak to me if you have any queries.
Entering two teams in the Sevenoaks Indoor Cricket League
was a bold move, but having gained a place in the 1 st Division we realised that
this was not a place where people could sample the game. Our second team
would play in the 3 rd Division where standards were less exacting.
Mark Cheeseman runs the teams and it is a great tribute to him that we
fielded a full team for all of the 15 games we were scheduled to play. 18
players in all played and of those 7 were new to the indoor game. Our 1 st
team ended up as 4 th in the 1 st Division, while the 2 nd team avoided the
wooden spoon in the 3 rd Division.
We have played two 1 st team games, the first being against Sevenoaks Vine
who are the leading club in the Sevenoaks District. They batted first and
runs came steadily after they lost their first wicket with the first ball. We
had only three regular bowlers but they all stuck to the task and we restricted
Sevenoaks Vine to 105-5. Colin Brown was our most economical
owler taking 2-11. Our innings started disastrously, our two openers both
departing without scoring. If the Vine thought they had an easy win they
were mistaken. Ed Bonner scored an impressive 51 and Colin Brown supported
him with 37 not out. We needed 17 to win off the last over but only
managed 12, ending up at 101-5. Once again we had given a good account of
ourselves.
So we came to the last game against Holmesdale. We were able to field a
strong team but unfortunately Mark Davies was nursing a back injury. We
batted first and none of our batsmen were out, three retiring on 25 not out,
and ended up with a score of 109-0. Our bowling and fielding were once
again up to the mark and wickets fell regularly until the Holmesdale innings
ended in the 11 th over with an all out score of 71. Colin Brown ran through
the tail with 4-6, while Mark Davies had only two scoring shots off the two
overs he bowled. A fantastic end to a good season.
For their final game the 2 nd team faced Brasted & Sundridge II and only
had to take more points than Shoreham to ensure they escaped the wooden
spoon. The Brasted & Sundridge batsmen were in aggressive form and
blasted their way to a score of 122 but lost 5 wickets. Our batsmen could
not match their pace but everyone contributed and we ended up with an all
out score of 89. Thus we had scored 5 bonus points. Shoreham then faced
Chevening Amblers, who went on to win the game and the 3 rd Division title.
As Shoreham only secured 1 point we escaped the wooden spoon.
Thank you very much to all those who participated in our two teams during
the season.
Emotions …
Last night my wife and I were sitting in the living room, talking about the issues of living
or dying. I said to her, "Dear, never let me live in a vegetative state, totally dependent
on machines and liquids from a bottle. If you see me in that state, please disconnect
all the contraptions that are keeping me alive, I'd much rather die.”
My wife got up from the sofa and gave me a look of admiration.
She then proceeded to disconnect the TV, the Satellite Dish, the DVD, the Computer,
the Mobile Phone, the iPod, and the Xbox. She then went to the fridge and threw away
all my beer.
In May the weather can be all over the place; it can cruelly change
to bring a late frost. Borders will be bursting with fresh, new foliage,
but don’t plant out too soon those tender plants.
• Sow runner beans outside towards the end of the month.
• Sow dwarf beans in the middle of this month.
• Sow beetroot ¾” deep, 5” apart in rows 12” apart.
• Mint can be lifted and divided this month.
• Carefully earth up potatoes. If you are growing potatoes in bags or
containers make sure you top up with soil and keep well watered and
fed.
• Plant out your leeks 4”-6” deep, 9” apart in rows 12”-15” apart.
• Keep seedlings and plants free from weeds.
• Sow salad vegetables at regular intervals for a constant supply. Protect
young plants from SLUGS.
• Pinch out the growing tips of broad beans once five trusses of flowers
have formed. It will help to control BLACK FLY.
• Sow in greenhouse or on window sill cucumbers, courgettes, marrows.
• Mulch raspberry canes to help retain moisture.
• Feed sweet peas weekly with liquid fertilizer and water well during dry
spells.
• This out hardy annuals sown earlier.
• Containers and hanging baskets can be planted up at the end of this
month.
• Finish planting dahlias and begonia tubers.
• Watch for aphids on your roses; spray as necessary.
