owler taking 2-11. Our innings started disastrously, our two openers both
departing without scoring. If the Vine thought they had an easy win they
were mistaken. Ed Bonner scored an impressive 51 and Colin Brown supported
him with 37 not out. We needed 17 to win off the last over but only
managed 12, ending up at 101-5. Once again we had given a good account of
ourselves.
So we came to the last game against Holmesdale. We were able to field a
strong team but unfortunately Mark Davies was nursing a back injury. We
batted first and none of our batsmen were out, three retiring on 25 not out,
and ended up with a score of 109-0. Our bowling and fielding were once
again up to the mark and wickets fell regularly until the Holmesdale innings
ended in the 11 th over with an all out score of 71. Colin Brown ran through
the tail with 4-6, while Mark Davies had only two scoring shots off the two
overs he bowled. A fantastic end to a good season.
For their final game the 2 nd team faced Brasted & Sundridge II and only
had to take more points than Shoreham to ensure they escaped the wooden
spoon. The Brasted & Sundridge batsmen were in aggressive form and
blasted their way to a score of 122 but lost 5 wickets. Our batsmen could
not match their pace but everyone contributed and we ended up with an all
out score of 89. Thus we had scored 5 bonus points. Shoreham then faced
Chevening Amblers, who went on to win the game and the 3 rd Division title.
As Shoreham only secured 1 point we escaped the wooden spoon.
