cially in our parish, and the food bank helps by providing families in need with a weekly bag of groceries. When the Bishop of Rochester made his visit to Sevenoaks Deanery at the end of March he commended the food bank at St John’s as an example of how the churches are reaching out to the community as part of their Christian mission. Up to now the main contributor to the food bank has been one of the local supermarkets, but the amount of food received from this source has recently diminished and we therefore need to increase the supply from other sources. Fortunately parents at Sevenoaks School are now making regular donations and some other local schools have agreed to help, but we too need to continue to do our bit at St John’s and to encourage other churches to help as well. The loavesNfishes basket will continue to be put out at the back of the church every Sunday and donations of cash are also welcome. April has, appropriately enough, been a time for spring-cleaning at St John’s. Steeplejacks have been up to the bell turret and restored the bell to working order. I felt giddy watching them, as they put ladders in places where I would not have thought it possible. We plan that, after a long silence, the bell will come to life again at Father Robin’s induction. Graham Davison has also been ascending the heights, this time inside the church, as he and Simon Raikes built a scaffolding tower in the sanctuary and painted over the ugly brown stains high up on the north wall on either side of the chancel arch. A team of volunteers has been helping Father Robin to paint the walls of the 4
Vicarage. And a lot of effort went into making the church beautiful for our Easter celebrations. So, when Jacqueline and I hand the keys of the church to Father Robin on 24 May, I like to think that they will be the keys to a church which is a fitting place for the worship of God and with a congregation in good spirit. Of course we face challenges, but I pray that with the help of God and under the leadership of Father Robin we will be able to tackle them with courage and determination.
