WHAT WE BELIEVE
“The Paschal Mystery:
He accepted even death”
“Jesus was killed. There is no doubt about the fact
that he was dead. How dead was he? He was buried!
How buried was he? For three days!
There are those who view the death of Jesus as
something God the Father demanded as a bloody sacrifice
to expiate for humankind’s sin, reminiscent of the
bloody sacrifices described in the Hebrew Scriptures.
Others understand Jesus’ sacrifice to be one of obedience
to his Father’s will.
Adam’s sin was one of disobedience. Jesus was obedient
to what his Father wanted, and that made him
some enemies who didn’t like what he said and did.
They arranged to have him killed. By his obedience,
Jesus reversed the disobedience of Adam. Adam represented
all humankind; Jesus represents all humankind.
Because of Adam’s disobedience all humankind was
diminished; because of Christ’s obedience, all humankind
is redeemed.
In the incarnation, Jesus took on human limitations.
In his death, he shed those human limitations. As a
human being who walked this earth, Jesus was subject
to the human limitations of time and place. He could
be only in one place at a time. In dying, Jesus shed
those limitations. He could now be present in all places
for all time. He was still human but no longer limited
by time and place.
