CHRIST IS RISEN! CHRIST IS TRULY RISEN!
Throughout the month of May I’d like to invite you to join in praying the
acknowledging the important role that our Blessed Mother has in our
faith life.
At St Joe’s we will offer the rosary a half hour before our Masses on
Saturday 4:00 p.m. and Sunday 8:00 and 10:00 a.m. Please come a
half hour before Mass and join us at 3:30 p.m. (Sat) and 7:30 a.m. &
Bishop’s Annual Appeal
Thank you to 408 parishioners who have offered a gift to this year’s
Bishop’s Annual Appeal. Their generosity has helped us with a grand
total of $67,757 contributed so far. That is an average gift of $166. If
you have not contributed to the appeal yet, please help us not only meet
our goal but actually exceed it. Thank you.
Adopt-A-Student
St. Francis Xavier School System is a terrific option for our children.
Unfortunately, it is not free. Thanks to some very generous parishioners
we have a fund that has been established to offer some help towards
tuition. If you have been educated in our Catholic School System and
would like to “give back” to it, a monetary gift could help. If interested,
simply put your gift into an envelope and mark it “Adopt-A-Student” and
drop it into the collection. Thank you.
St Francis Xavier Schools ENROLLMENT
Enrollment for next year has already begun. If you are interested in
looking into enrolling your children, just call Catholic Central (733-
3709). Our staff would be more than happy to offer a tour or answer
your questions. St Francis Xavier has a long standing tradition of a solid
Catholic education. Many parents will tell you that the sacrifices made
for this educational choice are well worth it.
The BIKING Challenge
How about joining the 2013 Fox Cities Bike
Challenge? Do you think we can set up a
little competition between St Joe’s and St
Mary’s to see which parish bikes more miles
this summer? It could be fun and, of course,
healthy!
This whole effort is FREE and all family
members can participate. You join with family,
friends or go solo and you receive points for
riding anywhere - down the street, to work, to
school, to church or to the store. In 2012, the
Appleton area took 2nd place out of 650
metro areas from throughout the country.
This year the goal is to encourage 2,500 Fox
Cities residents, of all ages, to bike 1 million
miles from May to September.
You need to register and it’s easy. Go to
www.nationalbikechallenge.org. Click on
“JOIN”. Then click “Join the Challenge (I don’t
have an Endomondo account)”. Then fill out
the bio info. Join the St Joe’s team by filling
in your employer as “St. Joseph Parish—
Appleton”.
Beginning May 1 st record and enter your
mileage. Monthly prize drawings will be
offered to participants as part of this year’s
program. So, beginning May 1 st get on that
bike and start peddling for St Joe’s and for the
Fox Cities Bike Challenge.
By the way, Fr Jim is going to split his
mileage between St Joe’s and St Mary’s! Any
questions, please give Fr Jim a call at the
office (419-8738).
Have You Made Out a Will???
Most of us aren’t planning on leaving this
world anytime soon. So, we often don’t think
of how we’d want our possessions distributed
at the time of our death. However, if we don’t
have a clear Will in place, the State will step in
and determine it for us…..sometimes contrary
to our wishes.
Putting together a Will is not that difficult.
It’s just doing it that’s difficult.
As you think of beneficiaries for your
possessions, have you thought of St Joe’s? If
you’ve found the parish to be important during
your lifetime, perhaps you will want to offer
your help as you leave this world. For sure,
the parish has been blessed over the years by
generous financial gifts that parishioners have
left in their Wills.
Bread Sale
Thank you for your support of the bread sale
again this year. There were over 200 loaves
ordered with 30+ donated to The Warming
Shelter. The offering of letters was also well
received. Your response to this effort is
greatly appreciated.

Anointing of the Sick after the 4:30 p.m.
St. Mary Parish Mass - Saturday, May 4
The Sacrament of the Sick is a sacrament of spiritual
strength and comfort. Often we find it is the least
understood Sacrament of the church. In the past it has been
known as “The Last Rites, Sacrament of the Dying and even
Extreme Unction.” the reason why this Sacrament took on
such meanings is because often in the past people would
wait until the last hours or even minutes before person died
to receive the Sacrament. The thought was that the dying
person would then go immediately to heaven. It was also
believed that the Sacrament could only be received ONCE in
a lifetime and most people waited until the very last
moments of life. This is no longer so.
The Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick can and should
be received more than once, especially as conditions change
in our lives. We should NOT wait until death is close at hand.
It is meant as a Sacrament of the living to help strengthen
our journey in life when we encounter physical or mental
illness, an approaching surgery, and even extreme stress
and high blood pressure in our lives.
A special opportunity to receive this Sacrament will be
celebrated AFTER the 4:30 p.m. Mass Saturday, May 4th, at
St. Mary Church.
Thank You from Fox Valley Warming Shelter
personally thank your Pastor and the congregation members
for your support the week of March 17th! The staff, the
who prepared, delivered and served the meals, and for those
who watched over them as they slept. A special thank you
effort. It is only through the generous gift of talent and time
by such dedicated volunteers that our mission of sheltering
the homeless is possible. For any of you who enjoyed your
WHAT WE BELIEVE
(this weekly article explains one aspect of our Catholic Faith
Fundamental Principles of Christian Morality
Sometimes, even often, individual moral stances of the
Catholic Church are difficult to understand and accept.
Those moral teachings are based on fundamental
principles, which sometimes are not articulated in moral
pronouncements. In the next few weeks, we will look at
those fundamental principles which are the basis for
Catholic social teaching.
The first fundamental principle is that individual human
beings exist, not just as individuals, but also in community
with all other human persons. God designed it that way.
With the possible exception of going to the bathroom, all
activities of individuals affect other human beings. Even
then, when you flush the toilet, it affects others, because
we’re using some of the water God gave to all of us!
This awareness of our connectedness with others serves as
a moral foundation for an attitude of solidarity with each
other, and leads to a dedication to social justice for
everyone.
If you put marbles in a jar and push and shake them down,
they don’t touch each other very much. They’re too hard.
But if you take grapes and put them in a jar and push and
shake them down, they touch each other a lot more,
because grapes bend and bruise and bleed a bit. Human
beings are like grapes. It is immoral to live as a marble in a
jar of grapes.
