22 MARCH 2013 SPORTS Masters “tee-up” once again Dana Gattone Staff Writer Some might call it “the shot heard around the world,” others simply refer to it as the “Bubba shot,” but all agree that Bubba Watson’s 2012 Masters victory was quite remarkable. Augusta, Georgia, home to the prestigious Augusta National Golf Club, has been the site of the Masters since its commencement in 1934. Seventy-seven years later, the Masters has become one of the most anticipated sporting events of the year. Maybe it’s the awe-inspiring Magnolia Lane that lines the driveway to the Clubhouse or the “Amen Corner,” as “Sports Illustrated” writer Herbert Warren Wind once called it, that wraps around holes 11, 12, and 13. But the enticing field present at this year’s Masters is sure to make things interesting. Millions will tune in, wondering who will receive the coveted Green jacket, given to the champion of the tournament. According to the official PGA rankings, Rory McIlroy currently remains atop Scott, the clutch Austrailian. Although McIlroy is World number one, he may not be the predicted champion of the 2013 Masters. McIlroy has had a bumpy the rankings chart Masters background, in spot number whether it was blowing a one. He is accompanied by four other Europeans in the top ten: Luke Donald, Justin Rose, Lee Westwood and Ian Poulter. Top-ranked Americans four shot lead in the final round in 2011 or finishing T40 in 2012 after trailing by one going into the weekend. As for Tiger Woods, he looks to redeem himself after his performance last include Ti- year. After seven consecu- ger Woods, Brandt Art by Matt Lanus tive top ten finishes at the Snedeker and fan favorite Matt Kucher, who moved up 15 spots in the rankings after his victory at the Accenture World Matchplay Event. Rounding out the top ten currently is Louis Oothuizen, who lost to Bubba Watson in a playoff in 2012, and Adam Masters, Tiger stumbled in and tied for 40 at last year’s Masters. Phil Mickelson, always a fan favorite, is predicted to finish near the top of the leader board as well. The Masters Tournament will be held April 11-14 at Augusta National. Boys volleyball sets up for the win Lauren Mroz Staff Writer Saint Viator boys volleyball is heading into the 2013 season with confidence that their senior leadership and knowledge of the game will guide them to being one of the top teams in the ESCC. “Our goal every year is to stay competitive “We are in one of the toughest conferences in the state. The past three years, we were only winning one and two matches a year. Last year we got to 4-4, so our goal this year is to get to 6-2 and be a contender for the conference title.” said varsity head coach, Chris Boylan. “In the seven years that I’ve been here, we have our strongest returning group this season. We have seven seniors, so there is a lot of leadership—primarily led by senior setter, Brennan Harrington.” added Boylan. “As a senior captain, I have to lead the team in a positive way,” said Harrington. “Off the court, I will have to make everyone as comfortable as possible with each other so we can play together as a team. On the court, I will have to keep my head up even when we are down or whenever I make a mistake. The worst thing you can do in a volleyball game is to put your head down and give up on the team. Being a leader is not easy, but I am sure I will be able to lead the Saint Viator volleyball team to another successful season.” Harrington said. “I want to lead by example. I will impress my positive attitude onto my teammates and motivate them to push themselves to be the best players they can be.” declared Senior outside Ben Wolf said about his goal for this season. After having dominant roles in both the play and the musical, senior Ryan Lavelle is looking forward to getting his competitive juices flowing again out on the court. “My job is to bring energy to the team. I’ve got to let it translate to the other guys so they get pumped up and we get louder. That helps a lot in volleyball,” said Lavelle. Coach Boylan encourages fans to come out and support the team this season. You can catch up on volleyball news at @ViatorBVBall. The boys volleyball team practices on the court.
