Day 7: Tulln to Dürnstein. Today
we continue to follow the Danube
west, weaving through cool forests
as we make our way along the wide,
green valley. We pass through sleepy
villages and pretty wine towns, perhaps
stopping for a bite to eat in a local pub.
Our destination is Dürnstein, a small
town in the renowned Wachau region.
The town boasts an idyllic valley setting,
surrounded by vine-covered slopes.
The Wachau produces a particularly fine
Riesling – why not enjoy a glass while
admiring the stunning surroundings?

Day 8: Dürnstein. The romantic
town of Dürnstein has a long and
fascinating history, dating back to
1192, when Duke Leopold V held
Richard I Lionheart captive in Dürnstein
Castle after a dispute during the Third
Crusade. The castle was destroyed
in 1645 but its ruins can still be seen
today. We also recommend a ride to
nearby Krems, where the oldest grave
ever found in Austria was discovered
and is believed to be over 27,000
years old. This relatively small town of
around 23,000 was once a serious rival
to Vienna during the 11th and 12th
centuries. Today’s visitors are attracted
by the town’s elegant architecture of
town houses and courtyards with a
southern Italian feel. Must-see buildings
here include the Piaristenkirche, the
Renaissance town hall and vast 13th
century Gozzoburg palace.
Day 9: Dürnstein to Melk. This
stretch of our journey through the
Wachau is along the most stunning part
of the Danube cycle path. From castles
perched on hills to swans nesting along
the riverbank and past small forests,
farm fields, sprawling vineyards and
charming little towns, the serene beauty
of the Danube reflects in the summer
sun. Be sure to bring your camera,
as the vistas on this ride are simply
breathtaking. 21 miles (34km).
Day 10: Melk. Towering above the
left bank of the Danube, Melk offers an
impressive range of architecture within
its atmospheric streets. The town is
best known for Stift Melk, the imposing
baroque Benedictine monastery which
stands proudly over the town. Founded
in 1089, this truly magnificent building
with its numerous frescos continues to
inspire devotion from all who visit. Our
final recommendation for a nearby ride
is to the wonderful church of Maria
Taferl which has traditionally attracted
angelic and pilgrimage processions.
Day 11: Today we say “Auf
Wiedersehen”. We will transfer you
direct from Melk to Vienna Airport by
train or minibus and, look forward to
welcoming you back again next year.
