winding through lush meadows below
the magnificent Wettersteins. The
trail passes the pretty Riessersee, with
views to the Zugspitze reflected in its
crystal waters. The other option leaves
the valley shortly after passing the
Riessersee. Here the Kreuzeck cable
car is available to lift you high into
the mountains. A well marked path
contours around the Waxenstein
Mountain, before descending through
some of the best scenery the Bavarian
Alps has to offer. The route continues
through a narrow gorge to Grainau.
6 or 8 miles (10 or 13km).
Day 8: Grainau. Known as the
Zugspitze village, Grainau is a wonderful
blend of natural grandeur, enhanced
by the legacy of beautiful buildings left
by farmers through the ages. Window
boxes burst with colour against
weathered timber walls, with the sheer
face of the Zugspitze rearing behind.
Nearby are two picturesque lakes: the
Badersee and the Eibsee. The former
is emerald green and has a statue of a
mermaid hidden in its depths. The latter
nestles high above Grainau and makes
an excellent focus for a day out walking.
Grainau is also a stop on the Zugspitze
train and offers another opportunity to
enjoy the spectacular views from the
top of Germany’s highest mountain.
Day 9: Today we say “Auf
Wiedersehen”. We will transfer you
direct from Grainau to Munich airport
by train or minibus, and look forward
to look forward to welcoming you back
again next year.
