end of life<br />

The end-of-life-<br />

Phenomenon »EOL«<br />

Lately <strong>the</strong>re have been some damages<br />

(fires) with bi-p<strong>in</strong> fluorescent<br />

lamps <strong>in</strong> explosion-proof light fitt<strong>in</strong>gs.<br />

A potential cause for <strong>the</strong>se<br />

<strong>in</strong>cidents can be found <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> »Endof-life«-Effect<br />

(EOL) of <strong>the</strong> lamps. In<br />

exceptional cases this can occur at<br />

<strong>the</strong> end of <strong>the</strong> lifetime due to excessive<br />

surface temperatures at <strong>the</strong><br />

lamp sockets which can damage <strong>the</strong><br />

lamp holders so that <strong>the</strong>y will lose<br />

<strong>the</strong>ir protective function <strong>in</strong> regard to<br />

<strong>the</strong> explosion-protection. (see <strong>the</strong><br />

report of <strong>the</strong> PTB <strong>in</strong> Braunschweig,<br />

www.explosions-schutz.ptb.de /pruefung-plex-komp-langfeld.htm).<br />

explosion-proof<br />

ecg q 2439<br />

SCHUCH do<strong>in</strong>g pioneer work<br />

The problem of <strong>the</strong> »End-of-life«-Effect and its relevance for <strong>the</strong> explosion protection has<br />

been recognized by SCHUCH - as a competent and experienced light<strong>in</strong>g manufacturer<br />

- <strong>in</strong> good times.<br />

S<strong>in</strong>ce December 1998 <strong>the</strong> explosion-proof ECG q 2439 which is <strong>in</strong>stalled <strong>in</strong> all SCHUCH<br />

explosion-proof fluorescent light fitt<strong>in</strong>gs for zone 1 comes with <strong>the</strong> »End-of-life«-Cut-off<br />

accord<strong>in</strong>g to CDV IEC 61347-2-3/A1.<br />

The most recent generation of <strong>the</strong> SCHUCH explosion-proof ECG q 2439 comes with 2<br />

EOL-Safety circuits on both ends of <strong>the</strong> lamps (correspond<strong>in</strong>g to <strong>the</strong> draft standard<br />

IEC 60079/7, dated 29. April 2005), ensur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> permanent monitor<strong>in</strong>g<br />

of <strong>the</strong> lamp circuits <strong>in</strong> regard to <strong>the</strong> EOL-Effect and<br />

<strong>the</strong> safe cut-off <strong>in</strong> case of a failure.<br />

1. Asymmetrischer Pulstest (Test 1)<br />

The asymmetrical pulse-test simulates an EOL-lamp by<br />

<strong>in</strong>creas<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> resistance asymmetrically by 15 kΩ for a<br />

duration of 3 ms and a pause of 3 ms respectively 27 ms.<br />

These disturb<strong>in</strong>g pulses usually occurr<strong>in</strong>g at <strong>the</strong> end of<br />

<strong>the</strong> lifetime, especially dur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> cold start will be<br />

recognized by <strong>the</strong> ECG and <strong>the</strong> lamp-circuit is cut-off,<br />

safely.<br />

2. Asymmetrischer Leistungstest (Test 2)<br />

The lamp operat<strong>in</strong>g voltage and <strong>the</strong>rewith <strong>the</strong> output will<br />

<strong>in</strong>crease at <strong>the</strong> end of <strong>the</strong> lifetime of fluorescent lamps.<br />

The asymmetrical output-test simulates directly <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>crease<br />

of <strong>the</strong> output, result<strong>in</strong>g from <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>crease of <strong>the</strong> asymmetrical<br />

voltage <strong>in</strong> case of an EOL-situation.<br />

This <strong>in</strong>crease is cont<strong>in</strong>uously monitored and <strong>the</strong> affected<br />

lamp circuit will be cut-off safely as soon as <strong>the</strong> limit of<br />

10W will be exceeded.<br />

Lampenspannung<br />

After <strong>in</strong>stall<strong>in</strong>g a new lamp <strong>the</strong> ECG and <strong>the</strong>rewith<br />

<strong>the</strong> light fitt<strong>in</strong>g will work properly aga<strong>in</strong>.<br />

I.e. <strong>the</strong> lamp is be<strong>in</strong>g monitored cont<strong>in</strong>uously, a cost<strong>in</strong>tensive<br />

ma<strong>in</strong>tenance of <strong>the</strong> fluorescent lamp is not<br />

necessary.<br />
