Enterprise Risk Management:
A tool for Making Decisions &
Managing Uncertainty
Enterprise risk management (ERM) is a dynamic
discipline that has evolved to encompass numerous
competencies. The true value of ERM is realized
when it is approached holistically and is understood
to include business strategy, operational
effectiveness and operational risk management.
Experienced leaders and managers understand
that managing risk is a critical part of their
responsibility, yet few have received targeted
training in risk management.
And now the next generation of ERM competencies
is emerging – key among them is risk-based
decision-making. Advanced ERM skills enable
decision-makers to effectively assess their firm’s
vulnerabilities and the risks associated with their
people, processes and systems. Specialized ERM
knowledge enables leaders to determine how
unpredictable, often unknown, external factors
could affect their business.
Awareness and understanding of strategic and
operational risks enable managers to maintain
alignment of objectives and resources while
mitigating risk to achieve a high level of
performance. The key to successful ERM is your
ability to minimize the gaps – the risks –
between your organization’s current capability
and its need to increase performance and value.
