Broadsheet, folio, (420 x 297 mm) printed on both sides, with handcoloured
engraving at head (69 x 272 mm), products listed in triple
columns within border; a few short marginal tears, one with old repair
to verso; some light staining, corners frayed, with central fold marks.
A rare survival, a late eighteenth century trade list of a perfumer and druggist, based
in Florence, with premises near the Palazzo Vecchio. The broadsheet is headed by an
engraved banner across to top 'A la Source du bon Gout', below it address details of
the merchant are given, followed by a listing approx 300 products or flavours. The
listing is subdivided under separate headings: Droguerie, Perfumerie and Vins.
Amongst the perfume section, liquid pomades are listed in numerous flavours,
followed by firmer pomades, make-up (pomades pour le teint), essences, oils, eau de
toilette (again in countless different flavours), simple rose, and orange water, soaps,
vinegar-based clarifying lotions, rouge of different types, body powder, almond
crèmes, scented and unscented powders to mention but a few. Each of these products
is generally available in different flavours, which accounts for the large number of
individual products advertised. In addition to these items foreign luxury products,
such as gloves, stockings etc, followed by an extensive section of foreign wines.
Eighteenth century trade lists evolved out of the earlier trade cards and later
developed into fully priced price lists. Their purpose was to give a full list of the
bearer's stock in trade, and they were generally unpriced.
