A total of 3300 varves were counted in the 65 feet ( 20 m)<br />
of core. Some core was disturbed and/or lost so it was<br />
not possible to get a complete number of varves. Based on<br />
the average thickness for each section of core an estimated<br />
number of varves was calculated. The net results is an<br />
estimated 4600 varves. Since erosion is likely to have<br />
removed some of the varves, Lake Tight was in existence<br />
for at least 4600 years.<br />
Lake Tight drained new drainage developed in front<br />
of the icesheet, forming the Ohio <strong>River</strong> system of today.<br />
Between Nitro and Huntington, WV is an abandoned<br />
section of the <strong>Teays</strong> <strong>River</strong> and Lake Tight.
