The spectral results of Core 12 are shown in the next slide. There is a marked 12 year cycle in the sedimentation. Tidal cycles are known to control sedimentation, but would not be a factor here. The only other known cycle with a period of 12 years, or nearly so, is sunspot activity today. It is not unreasonable to assume that our sun had sunspot cycles in the past. During the part of the cycle when activity is greater, there could be sufficient solar radiation to cause the lake to be frozen over fewer months of the year and more runoff from melted snow to increase sedimentation.
