Some History about Scots College
The College was founded as a Presbyterian Boys’ College largely through the efforts of
the Very Rev Dr James Gibb and the Hon J G W Aitken. It opened on 9 February 1916 on
the site in Thorndon where Queen Margaret College is now. Three years later in 1919, the
College moved to its present site in Strathmore Park, with two headmasters, Dr Uttley and Mr
Dickinson (imagine two headmasters!). The College is essentially a day school but does have a
weekly boarding unit (Gibb House) of 70 beds.
Currently the Prep School roll is about 110, the Middle School roll is about 400 and the
Secondary School roll is about 300.
What happens each day?
Years 7 & 8 report to their Tutor Rooms.
Years 9-13 must be at school before 8.30am each day. You then go to the Inner Quad and look
at the big white noticeboards and computer screens to see if there is anything that concerns
you. You then go to your locker to sort out your books for periods 1 and 2.
A bell rings at 8.40am which is the signal for you to go to class, ready for an 8.45am start to
The school runs 50 minute periods with bells signalling the start and end of each period. Bells
also ring at 10.45am and 1.45pm as warning signals to go to class.
The period times are as follows; they are the same for Tuesday to Friday but period 5 starts at
6 Student Handbook 2013

What happens in the first week?
For two days you will have a special Orientation programme in which you will go around in
House groups and really get to know the College and its systems as well as the expectations of
the Middle School and in some of your main subjects.
When will I get my timetable?
Your previous school has already given us information about you. Mainly from this information, and
backed up by the tests you sat in November, you will be placed in a class, either the A class or one
of the four parallel B classes. (Year 7 is not streamed.) During the orientation programme , you will
be given your timetable which will tell you what classes you have, in what rooms you have them and
who your teachers are. This timetable will operate at the conclusion of the orientation programme.
Sellotape it into your homework notebook (prep book) so you don’t lose it. Placings in the A stream
are reviewed at the end of term 2 (or earlier) in case there have been misplacements.
Each House has a House Dean and tutors, and these are the people who monitor your progress
from Years 7 – 13, offering support and guidance. They are also the teachers to whom you will
go if things go wrong. You also have a Head of House who is one of the College Prefects as
well as Year 10 Student House Representative
You will hear the name ‘Gibb House’ which is the name of the Boarding House – all boarders
are also in one of the Houses above.
Year 7 & 8 also have a year group Dean who are able to assist you with pastoral and
operational matters.
Student Handbook 2013 9

What other things do Houses do?
The Houses also compete in a full inter-House programme of activities – see page 12 for
details. There will be a variety of other activities during the year which you will enjoy. For
example some Houses go to McDonalds or Pizza Hut for lunch, or maybe go Ten Pin bowling
as a group.
There is a big House Dinner for Years 7-13 held towards the end of the year when the House
acknowledges the achievements during the year. You and your parents will be invited to this.
How much prep (homework) will I get?
In general each teacher will set you homework each day they have you in class (but probably
not in practical classes like PE or Workshop). You will be given a prep book in which you
must record your homework each day. You will occasionally be asked by the Principal of the
Middle School or your Dean to show your prep book to make sure you are keeping it correctly.
As a rough outline, the amount of homework set for each year level will probably be on
average
Years 7-10 20 minutes per subject
Year 11 25 minutes per subject
Years 12, 13 30 minutes per subject
What are the rules about uniform?
You are expected to stick to the rules about uniform – see later on about ‘punishments’! Each
day you wear a blazer, shirt and tie (jersey optional), long or short trousers, socks and shoes.
THERE ARE TWO STYLES OF DRESS
Number Ones which is a white shirt and long trousers. These are worn on the fi rst full College
day each term and also each Friday for Chapel, for trips away or when hosting visiting schools.
If a singlet is worn under the shirt it must be plain white.
Number Twos are worn at all other times, with a grey shirt instead of a white one and you
may wear either short or long trousers.
When you wear the College blazer then you must also wear a Middle School tie. The blazer and
tie should not be worn during the school day unless instructed. However you must wear both
of them at all times outside the College as well as for Chapel, Assembly or a meeting with the
Headmaster or Principal.
If you are cycling to school you may do so without wearing your College blazer, but you should
remember that it may well be required during the day so you should have it with you every day.
Of course you must wear a helmet when cycling.
10 Student Handbook 2013

All items of uniform apart from shoes are bought from the Scots College Shop and everything
should be named. You will also need PE gear (House shirts, etc); your parents will already have
received details of all uniform items from the Scots College Shop.
Any outer garment, eg rainwear, must be black. Also remember that the College has a uniform
for sport, both inter-House and inter-School.
The uniform should at all times be worn neatly and tidily.
What about my hair?
Not too long, not too short, and not dyed in any way. If in doubt see your Dean before you
go to the hairdresser. The Headmaster or Principal occasionally directs boys to his own
hairdresser!
Also you can’t wear any visible jewellery nor can you smoke.
Can I bring a cellphone to school?
Yes you can, but it can only be used outside class time and must be switched off during class
time. If it rings or even if it is visible, you will have it confi scated – you have been warned!
Student Handbook 2013 11

What Sports and Other Activities can I do?
What can I do at lunchtime?
You can eat your lunch. If your parents have paid for a Dining Hall lunch then you go to
Chartres Hall. If you bring your own lunch then you go and eat it in the Quad (but not in the
school buildings) unless it is wet in which case you go to particular House classrooms to eat
your lunch. The Houses have these wet lunch rooms;
Year 9&10
Aitken G3 MacKenzie N1 Smith 14
Fergusson S10 Mawson 03 Uttley G2
Glasgow 04 Plimmer 16
Y9&10 can go to the Tuckshop to buy some food. Y7&8 place your order in the class box at the
beginning of the day. If you need a bus pass, train pass, Snapper top-up or stationery, you can
get them from the College Shop.
On Tuesdays and Thursdays there are often inter-House competitions going on, and if you
are not personally involved it is hoped you will go along and support your House. However
Thursday is also a time when your Dean/Tutor may wish to see you and the others in your
House.
You can play on the fi elds, courts, in the inner or outer quads but you can’t leave the grounds
unless you are in Year 13. When playing on the fi elds you must not wear your College blazer,
tie or jersey.
The Information Centre (which contains both the Library and Computer Room) is always open
at lunch time, as is the Careers Centre.
You can use Room 13 for silent study if you wish to catch up on work or do your homework.
The gymnasium is open from 1.00pm on Tuesdays and Thursdays but you must wear either
sports shoes (not black soles) or play in bare feet.
Room G4 is open if you wish to play chess.
What do I do if I want to leave school during the day?
If you have an appointment card or a letter from your parents requesting permission, then you
must have it signed by your Dean. As you leave you must sign the Leave book in Reception (see
Ground Floor map). You must also sign in again when you return to school.
If you are sick you will see the Nurse and she will contact Reception.
Student Handbook 2013 13

Do I have to carry all my books around all day?
No you don’t, and you shouldn’t! You are given a locker (which you should padlock – give the
spare key to the House Dean in case you lose yours!). Then before school put in your bag just
enough books for periods 1 and 2 and leave the rest in your locker. Then at interval you can get
the books for period 3,4 and at lunchtime you can get the books for periods 5,6. You shouldn’t
go to the lockers between periods 1,2 nor between periods 3,4 nor between periods 5, 6. Year 7
& 8 also have desks in their House Room to keep books.
What about buses?
In the morning buses run from the Railway Station, Karori, Churton Park and Crofton Downs to
the College (your parents have already been given details). There is also a shuttle bus from the
Hutt Valley.
A ferry also operates between Days Bay and Seatoun. Students catching this ferry can also use
a shuttle bus which runs between Seatoun and Scots. All shuttles operate on a termly basis.
In the afternoon buses for the Railway Station and Karori leave at 3.40pm (which allow you
10 minutes after school finishes). These buses leave from the car park outside the Chapel/
Assembly Hall. For all these buses you use a snapper card. Boys line up in single fi le between
the yellow lines on the car park.
You are of course expected to be well-behaved on the buses – no leaving your seats or loud
calling out, and you must wear your uniform neatly. In particular you should show courtesy
when getting on the buses, especially when there are younger boys on the same bus. Pushing
and shoving when getting on or off the buses is not very helpful and has the potential for
causing a serious accident. Badly behaved boys will be put off the bus or in extreme cases the
bus driver will return his bus to the College.
Will there be any socials or dances?
Yes, in terms 2 and 3 Scots College will host a dance for various year groups, for Year 8 and
above, organised mainly by the Year 13 Social Committee. Also you can get tickets for dances
at other schools (such as Chilton St James or Queen Margaret College). Ms Gandhi, the
Student Activities Co-ordinator, deals with these so keep your eye on the notice boards.
What happens when things go wrong?
For a start, don’t panic. There are always people around the school to help you. In general
things don’t go wrong but just suppose the following happen:
Problem
Solution
I don’t like a subject
I don’t like a teacher
Someone is bullying me
I’m getting too much homework Go and see your House Tutor or Dean
I don’t know anyone
They will discuss things with you and help you sort
A subject is too hard
things out
I’ve lost my bus money
I feel lonely
I think I have been unfairly punished
I HATE SCHOOL!
I spill something on my trousers Go and see the Nurse – she can help you clean up
or, if necessary, give you a spare pair
I feel sick at school
Go and see the Nurse in the Health Centre (see main map)
I break something
My locker is broken
My locker is too big or too small Go and see your Dean fi rst and they may
My locker is too high or too low direct you to Mr Finnimore (DPOpsMS).
I have locked my key in my locker
I have lost my key
I lose something valuable
Someone has stolen something
I arrive at school late in the morning Before you go to class, report to the “Lates” Offi ce
to sign the Late Book and get a late slip to take to your
class teacher. If very late, sign in at Reception
I feel too ill to go to school
Tell Mum or Dad and they will phone the College
(380 7588) to say you won’t be coming in
I lose my timetable
Go and speak nicely to Mr Doig (APCMS) or Reception.
Better still, log on to Scot-E and your timetable will
appear on the front page
I forget to bring my lunch
Go to the tuck shop (and if you have no money, your
Dean may be able to help you).
I need to ring home
You can use your cellphone between classes or see
Reception who might be able to help
I have a personal but very private Go and see your Dean or the Chaplain
problem
What happens if I lose (or misplace) an item of uniform?
Your uniform is, of course, all named so you can get it back quickly from the lost property. See
Mrs Bolton in Reception, she looks after lost property.
What sort of punishments are there?
You probably won’t need this section, but just in case …
Warning
Classroom Punishments
Fatigues
Impositions
Detentions
House Dean’s Report
Most teachers and prefects are kind and generous people and let
you off with a warning fi rst time up.
A teacher can give you all the usual sorts of punishments – extra
work. You can also be sent from the classroom to the Middle School
Reception if you are being a real nuisance. In this case you will be
given a Disruptive Card and your parents will be informed.
Prefects/MS Leaders can give these for minor infringements like talking
in in Chapel or Assembly, having an untidy uniform, misbehaving
around the school, etc. It involves staying behind after school on a
Friday and doing some manual cleaning for up to an hour.
These are given by teachers for out of class misdemeanours and
have the same effects as fatigues.
These are given by teachers for class work problems such as being
late for class, failing to do homework or hand in an assignment. If
you get one of these you stay behind after school on Monday or
Thursday (your choice) to make up for work you missed out on or
that was poorly presented.
If you persistently misbehave in class or if your work is well below
your potential, you can be put on a Dean’s report which involves
carrying a card from class to class and getting each teacher to sign
it with comments about your behaviour.
Saturday Morning Chores Avoid this one if at all possible as it means you are getting
very close to suspension! If you are becoming a real pain and
persistently disobeying the College rules you will come in on a
Saturday morning and spend up to three hours cleaning desks,
brushing up leaves, etc. Not much fun!
Of course if you want to go the whole way you can be suspended or even expelled by the
Headmaster! Long before this your parents will have been brought into the College to discuss
your behaviour with the Dean and/or Principal.
If you feel you have been unfairly punished, go and see your Dean.
De-merit points are allocated for various offences:
Fatigues/20 min detention
1 point
30 min impositions/40 & 60 min detentions 2 points
Disruptive Card/SOS/SMC
3 points
What sort of rewards are there?
At the end of Terms 1 and 3, teachers give out Commended for Good Effort cards to students
who have tried particularly hard. These are recorded and go towards the awarding of Effort
Prizes for each year level at the end of year prizegiving.
There is also a system of Merit points which rewards you for doing good things in class, sport
or around the school. Again these are recorded and movie passes given to those who acquire a
lot of these points.
What do the Prefects do, how will I recognise them?
These are very responsible senior students. They help keep discipline (as outlined above) but
they also help whenever there are any major activities when your parents come into the school.
They help organise the school dances, show prospective parents and students around the
College, help with buses at the end of the day, stand in the Chapel/Assembly Hall to make
sure people don’t misbehave. They wear kilts on special occasions like Chapel and so you can
recognise them there, and also they have a special badge on the right lapel of their jackets.
The Prefects for 2013 are as follows:
Head Prefect James Costello Ladanyi
How do I know how well I am doing in my subjects?
(or more importantly when do my parents find out?)
There are two full reports and four progress cards issued each year; the reports have full
teacher comments plus details of your involvement in House/College activities; the progress
cards have number grades covering both achievement and effort. Twice a year (March/July)
your parents are invited to discuss your progress (or lack of it!) with your teachers – you have
been warned!!
