90 Years of
Broadway
“90 Years of Broadway” was a hugely successful
school production by Scots College and Queen
Margaret College, which was seen by a full
audience over four performances.
Held at the Queen Margaret College
Hall, the musical spanned nearly a century
of popular tunes from some of the very early
Broadway musicals in the 1920’s up to the
more recent sensation, High School Musical
of 2006-2008.
Everyone had lots of fun, from those
performing in the show to the audience singing
along to well-known show tunes.
STUDIO WINDS
The College Studio Winds performed at
the National Concert Band Festival in New
Plymouth in July and took out a Bronze
trophy!
The performance started a little shakily,
but each song got better and better
as the boys overcame nerves. Special
mention went to our trombone section
and their excellent playing, and to the
percussion section for their outstanding
playing also.
The comments for the band were
all very good and encouraging and one of
the adjudicators said it was unpredecented
for a band that has such new players and
had only been together for a term to do
so well at the nationals. We were the
smallest band that performed with 22
players (all the others had between 30-60).
The Studio Winds has come from
our training Concert Band Program that
started last year and includes boys from
Years 7-13.
California Maritime Academy’s ship T.S.
Golden Bear, as part of U.S. Memorial Day
celebrations. About 250 students, plus the
US Ambassador and his guests listened as
the boys performed many well-loved songs.
Songs included Star Spangled Banner,
Battle Hymn of the Republic, My Country
Tis of Thee, The Stars and Stripes Forever,
Yankee Doodle, You’re a Grand Old Flag, and
America the Beautiful.
CHAMBER CHOIR AT
GOVERNMENT HOUSE
The Chamber Choir were invited to
perform at Government House for the
Peter Blake Leadership Awards Dinner on
Friday 1 July. This was a very prestigious
event and the choir entertained the 150
guests from the newly refurbished hall
staircase upon arrival.
The Governor General, The Right
Concert Band aboard T.S Golden Bear
Honourable Sir Anand Satyanand, GNZM,
QSO, took time from the function to enjoy
the boys’ beautiful repertoire including
Wesley, Ben. E King and a Zulu chant and
expressed his personal appreciation for
the entertainment provided.
48 HOUR FILM FESTIVAL
At the 48 Hour Film Festival Wellington
Regional final, the Scots team ‘Kilt &
Sporran’ picked up the prize for Best Damn
Teen Team 2011 for their film ‘The Last
Laugh’ – chosen from over 50 entries in
that category! They were also National
Finalists for the Best Damn Teen Team and
the Best Schools Team.
Ben Lawrence (Year 13) gave us the the
low down on what
it takes to make an
award-winning film
in just 48 Hours…
1. What was the
brief? What did your
film entry have to include?
We received the brief when two people
from each team went to Toi Whakaari
Drama School in Newtown, the 48 Hr
Film Festival HQ, and were given the
requirements for this year’s competition.
The brief includes the prop, line of
Chamber Choir at Government House
dialogue, character and genre that you
have to include in your film. We were given
the ‘Revenge Film’ genre, which is one of
the twelve genres given out, and we also
had to incorporate a ‘bent wire’, a character
named ‘Bobby Young’ who was an ex-bully,
and also the line of dialogue “What have
you got?”. This is the same for all entrants
in the competition.
2. How many students were in each
team?
In our team, Kilt and Sporran, we had
about 18 cast and crew.
3. Where did you do most of the filming?
We did most of the filming around the
school, in places such as the Art room, the
Boarding House foyer by Mr Smith’s office,
and also the grass area by the Tech and
Drama room. We also did a good chunk at
Adam Middleton’s house!
4. What was the most challenging hour
of the 48 hours?
The most challenging hour would have
to be when we needed to film the party
scene. This was because we had quite a
lot of shots to film, and also we had a lot
of people on set, so at times it got a bit
rowdy. We were also pressed for time, as
we wanted to be as quick as possible so
we didn’t disturb Adam’s parents for too
long…
5. The funniest thing that happened
on set?
Adam walking straight into the boom mic
haha!
6. What was the weirdest prop used?
A bit of rusted barbed wire Connor had to
use at the end of the film.
7. How many hours sleep did you get?
And where did you sleep?
We got 3 hours the first night, and 4 the
next (which was about 4 hours more than
last year!) Our whole team slept in the
drama room.
8. One thing you learnt from the
experience that you didn’t know
before?
Storyboarding is vital, and you can never
be too prepared.
9. What one word sums up the 48 Hr
film experience?
Furious
