Wee Alan has gone AWOL as
only the young and pretty can manage.
Last believed to have been
seen in his distinctive Parka in
London Road on Mon 22nd Feb,
he’s been bodyswerving our editor
on the phone and his copy hasn’t
arrived. Which is where I come in!
Heading down Leith Walk, I see
that No 18 is ten. To celebrate, they
held a most successful party weekend
at the end of Jan with a groaning
buffet and a free raffle whose
prizes included a DVD player.
George asks me to bare in mind that
the first Sat of each month is Bear
Day - with all the joys of Bear Soup
in the Jacuzzi TM. They’ve also now
got a masseur working on the premises
- currently three days a week -
phone for details if you want that
aching muscle sorted! Their recent
monstering in the gutter press hasn’t
affected trade one little bit, I’m glad
to say!
Further down the Walk, I note that
the old Pizzarama premises at 325
Leith Walk are being refurbished by
the nice folk from the Vittoria and
are shortly to re-open as La
Favorita with Pizza and Pasta on
the menu. Yum!
Bussing back up the Walk (the OAP
pass comes in useful), I’m reminded
that Edinburgh University’s V-Day is
putting on the Vagina Monologues
in Mood 1st-3rd Mar. A bit of a
change from the usual Moodiness as
exemplified by the Monday outing
of Polysuper who are doing a big
promo on the 2nd Mon of each
month with £150 of holiday vouchers
to be won. And if you turn up as
an Easter Bunny on 28th Mar, you
could win something else too!
Habana is also getting Eastery
with their annual Easter Egg donation
for a children’s charity. Their
Tsunami Appeal is well on its way to
raising £2,000 with Colin and Ryan
risking life and limb in a sponsored
sky dive at St Andrews on 19th Mar
And they’re even doing a fundraiser
for Pride Scotia on Easter Sunday.
But it’s not all digging into the pockets
for charity - Habana customers
actually get time for a pint too - and
with all the usual promotions running,
there’s usually a bargain to be
had. Looking at me quizically,
Gordon reminds me that Barry will
be running Quiz Nights from Wed
9th Mar.
Over at the Claremont, I hear that
the gorgeous Craig is starting up a
new club for trannies, admirers and
anybody with an open mind. Called
Absolutely Dragulous, it’s due
to kick off on Fri 18th Mar and thereafter
on the 3rd Fri of each month,
and will consist of a Cabaret followed
by a club night. I always
thought that a Cabaret was a row of
taxis, but I’m sure I’ll be proved
wrong!
Another New Thing is Gregor
Laird’s Heroes whch is due to
launch at the Rhythm Room,
Below Q-Bar on Sat 26th Feb (note
the change from the previously
advertised venue). It will run on the
2nd and 4th Sat of each month featuring
live bands, go-go dancers,
movies, performance art, and an
eclectic loud popular noise policy.
Sounds different!
Sat 26th Feb should also see the
9th Birthday Party of Luvely at the
Liquid Room. The theme is Top Hat
and Tails and, in addition to all the
usual birthday prizes and surprises,
there’s a free Birthday CD for everyone!
Next month will see the long
awaited launch of BURLY in
Edinburgh. The Glasgow boys are
treking their caravan through to The
Commplex on Fri 25th Mar for the
usual cruisy goings on. I think this
one will be a winner!
Not a winner, I’m afraid, was the
Regent who came second in the
Edinburgh section of the local
Campaign for Real Ale’s Pub of the
Year competition. Needing his arse
felt was local CAMRA member Alan
Joy who forgot to vote for his own
howff - if he had, the extra vote
would have made the pub 1st equal
with the Halfway House.
Whether the Regent gets into the
Good Beer Guide this year will
become apparent in August.
To become apparent next month is
whether Wee Alan will surface
again in the pages of ScotsGay and
if he’ll ever be forgiven by Lothian
Lesbian and Gay Switchboard for
referring to them in print as
“Bitchboard”.

SHAME
Shame – Scotland’s most exciting
new Alternative Club has arrived at
The Commplex, who are already
home to the very successful Velvet
Women’s Club Night; Nightshade;
Madison’s Rock Night;
Saddletramps; and now the new
home of the famous Burly from
Glasgow. Gay Blessings are also
conducted at The Commplex, (just
like The Simpsons!) as Weddings
are a main part of their business.
After a roaring success of a
launch night at The Commplex,
Shame is here and you are ready for
it, you naughty people! A balanced
and happy mix of male and female
was achieved…
On arrival at this impressive converted
gothic church, guests were
greeted by the awesome spectacle
of Te Pooka juggling fire. As people
queued to enter Shame’s launch
night these skilful and seasoned performers
warmed them with fire.
A free glass of bubbly also awaited
guests as they arrived.
Shame attracted some very interesting
and relaxed people, a wonderful
mix of the LGBT, fetish, Goth &
alternative communities married
together beautifully, quite an
achievement. The music was a good
mixture of interesting and very sexy
music to dance to, blended in with
some fantastic classics, such a
refreshing change to the club scene.
DJ Tekhed will be introducing an
impressive list of guest DJs including
– Primal T; Michelle; Metus; the man
with no name and a very stunning
young lady! Many more DJs are
lined up, and live performances are
also planned.
An interesting slide show was projected
onto the roof and could be

viewed from both floors all night.
And a digital slide show was projected
onto a huge screen above the
dance floor, I saw the lovely Pete
Burns dancing on the screen at one
point.
Upstairs is a large airy chill out
space where you can chat, play
pool or gaze down at the busy
dance floor. This interesting area is
filled with big comfy couches, a second
bar, pool table and two frosted
glass booths, one of which was
occupied by Crew 2000 with a very
busy information stall run by 4 very
helpful volunteers. They also provided
free condoms, lube, dental dams
and many other useful free things!
Also upstairs is the dungeon area,
run by the friendly; approachable
and helpful Nightshade, and a very
attractive woman with fangs!
Nightshade also run a club at the
Commplex. The equipment supplied
by Nightshade made quite a spectacle
with the awesome cross positioned
in front of the stain glass window
made by Elaine A. Adam.
‘Airbrush Body Art’ – A temporary
tattoo that looks like the real thing –
were provided by A.G. Body Art
and went down a treat as we all got
lovely tattoos.
The word on the street is that all
who attended had a fantastic night
and they will be back for more in
their droves, with all their friends,
Shame is the talk of the town!

thought into putting this together and
it has paid off with droves of happy
