EDINBURGH 

Hey all! Tis that time of year again – freezing 

ones nipples off and yet the Scots are still bbq-ing 

on the beach and skinny dipping in radio-active 

waters. Gotta love the optimism! Biggest news last 

month was the most unwanted visitor to oor great 

city, le Pope. It made me smile lots to that he only 

got half the onlookers than expected. Looks like 

hypocrisy is on the way out after all … 

Hottest news on the scene just now is the 

introduction of Drama, which has finally breathed 

new life into Party Tuesdays!! Hosted in the 

stunningly elegant Hawke & Hunter (it won’t stay 

that way by the time oor party goers have finished 

with it!!!) it is already drawing crowds of other 500 

people!!! 500 people on a Tue night? Yes, you did 

read that correctly. Drama successfully manages 

to mixes live acts, tribute singers, top drag queens, 

cheese and electro all together for a very mixed up 

crowd. Every night is themed – like the fab Britney 

night. Not surprisingly though, the GaGa night 

they had was by far one of the best nights out on 

the scene for a very long time. My spies tell me 

the atmosphere was electric. So many weekly 

clubs come and go on the scene, but I think 

Drama is here to stayHeaded up by scene fav 

Darren Kavanagh, who knows more than a thing or 

two about organising club events. 

There’s loads going on at Drama in October! 

On Tue 5th Oct, Ryan Jagger will perform (you 

might have seen him at Glasgow Pride). And Tue 

12th Oct brings the first drama annual Drag Ball, 

with top UK drag queens performing - and prizes 

for best dressed drag queen and drag king. Tue 

19th Oct is a Glitter Party, then Tue 26th Oct is 

the big one....Disco Divas. This night will feature 4 

singers, loads of dancers and another huge stage 

and production show. Future nights will include a 

charity fashion show, an airline party, and plans 

are currently being made for the drama Red 

Ribbon Ball in support of World AIDS Day. Mixing 

party with charity, we like!! 

Down at Planet, they have a whole weekend 

of fun planned for Hallowe’en, and foxy lady Cilla 

Slack has been sponsored to work on the bar all 

Sat night!! The bar, staff and DJs will all be 

dressed up a themed weekend raising money for 

Gay Men’s Health. The refurb continues to 

rumble on, with the floors all varnished, the ripped 

seats all recovered and the walls are currently 

being freshened up. Watch this space for updates! 

The festival was an awesome success for Planet, 

with the late license taking them to new heights. 

Plans are underway for new Sun afternoon events, 

with Sun evenings devoted to LaLa Hotpant’s very 

very busy Karaoke. It finishes just in time to allow 

you to move over to GHQ with Cilla for her Mile 

High Club @ GHQ! 

The Happy Days at Planet are going strong, 

with £1 drinks on Mon, Tue and Wed. This of 

course means they’re busy all day, and rockin’ like 

a Sat night with DJs Daz GLas, Deejay Bird and DJ 

Boytoy. On Thu nights Karaoke is hosted by Daz 

Glas - currently the only Karaoke early on a Thu, so 

let the party start here!! 

Also for Hallowe’en, Café Habana are hosting 

Habana’s Hallowe’en Hoohah, a night of cabaret, 

karaoke and tomfoolery – with all proceeds going 

to LGBT Youth Scotland. Staff and volunteers from 

this local charity will be on hand, dressed up in 

their favourite Hallowe’en outfits, to tell you more 

about their work and to sell you raffle tickets. 

Feeling lucky?? Then hit Habs on Sun 31st Oct, 

from 6pm. 

Speaking of Habana, many of you will be 

aware of Miss Coco Chanel who has entertained 

the masses daily throughout the festival. She is 

now looking to tour her Duo comedy drag show, 

with Misty Hymen, or show off her solo shows

CC Blooms have 2 huge party nights for us 

this month, on top of being the scene’s nightly 

party central hub!! Woof! is on Fri 8th Oct, which 

sees CCs join forces with Bearscots to present the 

BearScotFest 2010 special. Downstairs at CC’s 

will be taken over for this MEN ONLY, TICKET 

ONLY event from 11pm-3am. DJ Blondie will 

provide the tunes, while the hunky bar staff will be 

ready to serve the hot, hairy and horny bears. It’s

hosting their Hallowe’en Party on Sat 

30th Oct. Get down, because 

entertaining you for the evening will be 

resident DJs Blondie and Shazza, but 

also as a wee Hallowe’en treat, 2 more 

infamous DJs will join them - Shabby 

and Keeva. They were the Big Brother 

walkers, and the only ‘lesbian love story’ 

of Big Brother in its entire eleven year run. And 

both will be taking to the decks at CCs, as yet 

unthemed, massive Hallowe’en party. 11pm until 

late and FREE ENTRY all night! You’d be mad to 

miss it!!! 

And speaking of BearScots, BearScotFest 

2010, which is one of the largest gatherings of 

Bears in the UK, if not Europe, takes place in 

Edinburgh over the weekend of 8th-10th Oct. Last 

year this event had almost 500 attendees, and this 

year looks to be even better! The fantastically 

varied programme of events really does include 

something for everyone, and lots for all! 

Registration starts in the New Town Bar on Fri 

afternoon and will culminate there with the hot 

and sticky Bears In The Basement. Apart from the 

Woof! event at CC’s, there will also be 

sightseeing tours of Edinburgh; Steamy Bears 

Sauna at Steamworks, an Art exhibition by 

international bear artist Kike and Book and a 

book signing by Sean Cockwell, both at the 

Regent, the infamous Underbear Party and a 

fun afternoon of Cabaret at Electric Circus. Also 

the 10th birthday party of BearScots, with cake! 

BearScots are looking for burly bears, dashing 

daddies and cute cubs to become Mr. BearScots 

2010! So don’t be shy and put your name 

forward. You can find out about all these events,

In another part of the woods (Studio 24), 

The Bears Party will be on Fri 22nd Oct, from 

10.30pm-3am with a mix of indie, 80’s and dance. 

This is a free night, in aid of Waverley Care who 

will be bucket collecting. Beers start from only

GHQ have a plethora of events 

for you this month. Firstly, Fur Burger at Fri 8th 

Oct with aural stimulation from the Funki Diva, 

Dejaybird, Boytoy and DJ Lynny! Free entry before 

11pm, £4 after. Free passes available in Planet 

Bar. Start your weekend off in style every Fri with 

KiNkY DiScO, hosted by that special lady Miss 

Cilla Slack on the decks! And Love Traffic, GHQ’s 

Shag Tag is still going strong every Tue with DJ 

Dale Lush and friends. 

Velvet is going from strength to strength at 

its new home, The Speakeasy. Next date for this 

historic ladies’ night is Sat 16th Oct. Check out

after every monthly party! 

And if all that lady action isn’t enough, then 

why not try something a bit different? For those 

who like to live dangerously, or enjoy watching 

others live dangerously, pop along and support 

your local roller derby team! The Auld Reekie 

Roller Girls are bouting against Central City 

Roller Girls (Birmingham) in an extravaganza, 

Stop – Jammertime! Held at Meadowbank 

Stadium on Sat 16th Oct, from 1pm, once you go 

once you’ll never look back. Hot girls in small 

outfits, knocking shit out of each other on wheels 

– it’s technical, it’s tactical, and it’s hot as fuck!!! 

Ending every month off on an intellectual 

note, the Regent’s unique brand of quizzery, The 

World Famous Regent Bar Quiz, will next be on Tue 

28th Sep and Tue 26th Oct. With 6 themed rounds, 

who knows what you’ll be quizzed on next! Past 

rounds have included cocktails, aeroplanes, art 

and culture and foreign travel. Get there for 

8.30pm, as this ultimate quiz with free snacks and 

fab atmosphere is usually packed to the rafters!

So, it’s time to get out jumpers and fleeces 

again, but the daytime weather is brighter and 

cheerier than it was in July and Aug. As we’re 

approaching the equinox, I have just ordered a 

light-box to help ward off SAD. Fingers crossed, 

my ninth Scottish winter will be my happiest! 

So, how about a night of dancing to help keep 

warm? Cake is a new club in Inverness (Rose 

Street) and, as well as having a good general 

philosophy about LGBT folk, they are going to 

have regular gay nights. Not gay friendly: gay!! 

Woohoo!! The first one will be on Fri 22nd Oct. 

From 7.30-9pm there will be a free Icebreaker 

meeting held in a discreet, quiet area where new 

folk can meet and have a blether, pick up 

information, perhaps find out what else is going on 

and make new friends and contacts. The night 

itself kicks off at 9pm and those attending the 

Icebreaker will get in free. It’s over 18s only so 

bring identification with you if you are babyfaced. 

The following night brings the Halloween 

Bash to Inverness. From 8pm-1am Raigmore 

Motel will host the party to witches, warlocks and 

whatever other crazy costumes you choose. 

Tickets are available from the Highland LGBT 

Forum’s website (www.gay-ness.org.uk) or from 

Art Media in Church Street, Inverness. 

The Forum has done a few Freshers’ Fairs 

recently; at Inverness College, Raigmore Hospital 

and at the Gaelic College on Skye (Sabhal Mòr 

Ostaig). As well as giving away lots of free 

condoms to optimistic students, they provided 

health information leaflets, balloons, badges and 

keyrings. Thanks to Brook, THT, Breathing Space 

and Northern Constabulary for materials. 

The youth group had a mad karaoke night and 

I am truly grateful that photographs are not 

available! I came back from the loo half way 

through the evening to see my pal under the 

spotlight with an inflatable, rainbow coloured penis 

taped to his front, gyrating to Dancing Queen by 

Abba. Things got worse when I sang, but at least 

everyone else knew that they weren’t going to be

the worst singer of the night! It was great to see 

everyone there and a lot of laughs were had whilst 

we raised funds for the group. 

Speaking of raising funds, a kind, sweet man 

of my acquaintance, is doing a quiz night for the 

youth group too. By the time you read this I hope 

to have won my prize. 

The youngsters all have the film back that 

they made on the MASHED media course. They are 

truly brilliant. The Equality Officer from Highland 

Council saw one of them and asked if she could 

use it for diversity training! We are going to have a 

proper wee film night so that we can all watch all 

the films together and at that time I’m going to ask 

permission to use them. Watch this space; I’m 

hoping there’ll be a web link next time! 

On 4th Sep, I helped Scott from the Equality 

Network with the National LGBT Forum meeting in 

Inverness. As part of the introduction we heard 

about some of the things going on up here; the 

Rainbow Folk read their monologues, Sherri from 

the youth group showed her film and Mike from 

the HLGBTF and Jo from SWANS gave updates. 

There were about seventy attendees and we 

discussed the issues surrounding isolation in the 

Highlands and what could be done. Visitors came 

from all over the Highlands, Islands, Moray and 

from the Central Belt too. Huge thanks to everyone 

who took part and enjoyed the opportunity to 

network.

trendy venue Boho in the west end of 

Glasgow has also launched an increasingly very 

popular gay night which is on the first Thu of every 

month and called Glamour Revenge! The blurb on 

the evening from their management is ‘Night for 

the gay and glamorous to dance the night away, 

get your outfits planned cause in this joint your 

feet won't stick to the carpet!! Dress to impress 

bitches’. Oohs err indeed eh? 

Last but not least, remember the old Clone 

Zone on Virginia Street facing Dels? Well if you 

didn’t know it is now under new 

ownership and called Luke & Jack but 

fear not as well as picking up a whole 

host of goodies, or should that be 

naughties?!? The reason I’m 

mentioning this is the shop is also a 

great meeting place for those who 

don’t want to be in bars or clubs and 

I have a quote from co-owner Drew 

Bigglestone “I must point out that 

we are more than just a shop - but a 

safe space for LGBT folk to access 

information and advice without the 

presence of alcohol, loud music

GLAD TO BE GAY 

I was reading about X Factor winner Joe 

McElderry sharing his news with his fans that he is 

gay. And I was reminded of all the things that 

really irk me when it is reported that someone has 

“come out”. The language used even by normally 

respectable newspapers is interesting and 

revealing. Talking of which, there’s the first 

example. Joe “revealed” that he was gay. He 

“made the admission”. The singer “confessed”. 

Let’s look at the dictionary definitions of these 

words. 

• Reveal – to make known (something 

concealed or secret) 

• Admission – a confession, as of having 

committed a crime 

• Confession - A written or oral statement 

acknowledging guilt, made by one who has been 

accused or charged with an offence. 

According to Joe (and let’s face it he is the only 

one who knows) it wasn’t a secret, he just wasn’t 

sure and now he is. And it is a long time since 

homosexuality was a crime in this country thank 

goodness so no offence has been committed, no 

charges have been brought and in the words of 

that great gay icon Barbara Streisand, he has 

“nothing to be guilty of”! 

Whilst our media continues to use language 

normally associated with criminal or immoral 

behaviour we, as a society, will continue to make it 

difficult for people to be open about their sexuality. 

An 11 year old male relative of mine was 

annoyed because other boys in the playground had 

said he was gay. “They accused me of being gay” 

he said angrily. I tried to explain that it’s not

RED DUST ROAD 

Jackie Kay’s latest book, “Red Dust Road” has 

been a big success. It was the Radio 4 “Book of 

the Week” recently. Hearing it then, I was struck by 

the clear narrative simplicity of the childhood 

sections, written almost in a child’s speech 

patterns. 

The book begins near its chronological end, 

with the meeting with her birth father in Nigeria. 

Jackie is part Scots, part Nigerian; her parents met 

when her father was a student in Scotland. He later 

returned to Nigeria, and Jackie’s mother clearly 

had a difficult situation to face as a girl in the 

highlands in the 60’s, about to have a black baby. 

Thus Jackie was adopted and brought up by a 

socialist couple who already had a black elder 

brother for Jackie, another adoptee, and Jackie is 

always keen to say how loving they were. They 

were at the very successful reading Jackie gave at 

this year’s Edinburgh International Book festival, 

where the audience were greatly entertained by 

Jackie’s spirited and humorous reading. Though 

the material covered was often tough. 

The book’s sequence is idiosyncratic. Jackie 

says that she wrote it in chronological order. “I 

rewrote completely. I didn’t even look at the first 

version. It was like painting a wall – the under coat 

goes on first, then the higher coats. I wanted the 

structure to reflect the jigsaw of an adoption story. 

You are looking for the truth, - you find a piece, 

then a piece, then a piece that doesn’t fit, then you 

piece all of it together.” 

“We don’t really live our lives chronologically, 

but by memory. Emotional chronology is not linear. 

The childlike interludes were part of an internal 

map. I put a map up on the study wall, a chart in 

front of me. It gave reverberations and echoes. 

And it was good to be not writing and doing 

something different.” But. I immediately thought, 

while you were putting that chart on the wall a lot 

would be happening inside. And work on the book 

of a different kind would be going on apace. 

“Each of those interludes was no more than 

500 words long – sometimes much less. It was an 

“Italicised” voice, a different style from the other 

prose, and it becomes a more lyrical as the voice 

gets older. 

Jackie spoke of there being laughter and 

sadness in the same house, the house of her life, 

and that all that she writes that is emotionally 

difficult is also humorous. “One is a tear duct away 

from the other, but I didn’t expect the book to be 

as funny as it is. You may be chuckling away in a 

loving way in your study, but you don’t know how 

it will be taken.” 

Her brother wondered if anyone would be 

interested in “our family”. “This gave me doubts. 

As a writer, you want the reader to get to know 

themselves better through your work, and to hold 

a mirror up to their own lives.” 

Jackie is perhaps best known as a poet. “You 

use different sides of the brain for poetry and for 

prose,” she said. Poetry can be written on the 

train, but prose has to be in the study. Poetry is 

not biddable, but prose can be told to arrive – sit 

down and do it. 

The opening section of “Red Dust Road” takes 

place in Nigeria. Where she meets her birth father, 

who has become very religious, insists on going 

up to her room and dancing around her for a 

couple of hours, attempting to “cleanse” her and 

to convert her. He clearly sees her as his 

“sin” from the past, which he needs to 

expunge. He ends up giving her a headache. 

But her rationalism is not punctured. She is 

also open with him about her lesbianism, and 

he begins asking the questions that are 

unwanted – “Who is the man and who is the 

woman?” and so forth.. This is potentially 

very distressing and a far from ideal first 

meeting – but Jackie Kay conveys it in a way 

that seems like rich comedy, though of course 

there is more beneath. 

The father was not exactly accepting. Later, 

Jackie was told he would like her to write to 

him, but he would not reply. However, she 

made a very strong connection with a brother 

in Nigeria, and she says, “I am always a glass 

half full person, and I do not feel that In have 

lost a father so much as that I have gained a 

brother.”

in the themes in the book – 

relationships, love, trauma, how to deal with 

separation and grief and the impact of place

something worthy of “accusation”, you either are 

or you aren’t but he was having none of it. You 

would have thought he had been accused of 

stealing something. This is a boy who’s been 

brought up to live and let live and mostly he does. 

So I can only think his attitude is down to the 

negative language used by the media. 

And let’s imagine that this relative of mine IS 

gay? He is growing up thinking it’s wrong, it’s 

immoral, worthy of accusation. It follows then that 

he will believe HE is wrong and HE must be 

immoral and it makes it so much more difficult for 

him to simply be who he is.

titled. “Fiere” (fear, feary) – an 

old Scots word for friend ,from 

Auld Lang’s Syne. This will be a 

companion book for “Red Dust 

Road”. All her writing, she said, 

was a unified body of work, and 

she hoped people would read it 

all! Her poetry dealt with matters 

that would not fit into prose, and 

she enjoyed using her different 

legacies of old Scots and of Igbo 

words. 

I would heartily recommend 

dipping into Jackie Kay’s work in 

the sure hope of being 

entertained richly and of being 

able to hold a mirror up to 

yourself.

I’m not sure we’re much further forward than 

we were 25 years ago when my friend Martin told 

his mother that he was gay and that his flatmate 

was in fact his partner. Martin’s mum was well into 

her 60’s which made her reaction all the more 

surprising. This lovely wee Port Glasgow woman 

simply pushed the 2 single beds together the next 

time Martin and his “flatmate” came to stay. That 

said it all to him and he was delighted. 

That is until his sister, listening to her mum cry 

down the phone about how she’d always thought 

Martin would make a lovely dad, decided to tell her 

that he’d been kidding her on and wasn’t gay after 

all. It took time to repair the damage from that one 

but it turned out that the sister was in fact gay and 

struggling to “come out”. She felt the “guilt” for 

the two of them and didn’t want her mum to have 

the “shame” of two gay children so decided to tell 

her it was a joke! 

We all know that there are people who live their 

whole lives suppressing their sexuality because 

they find it so hard to “come out”. I wonder if we’ll 

ever see a day when nobody has to “come out” 

because there are no expectations of what 

someone’s sexuality ought to be. To be frank, I 

can’t wait till no-one gives a fuck because, to me, 

it’s really not that interesting whether you’re 

attracted to your own sex, the opposite sex or both 

of the sexes. Unless you’re the man of my dreams, 

I don’t care. And neither should anyone else. 

I met Joe McElderry earlier this year and he 

seemed like a really nice young guy. He made a 

brave decision given the expectations on someone 

like him and I really hope he can now do what 

heterosexual people take for granted and simply be 

himself.
