PANDAS 

There is no denying that once you have 

seen a giant panda, you will be left with a 

feeling of immense awe after seeing this 

iconic species. Giant pandas are the symbol 

of global conservation and are the national 

treasure of China, an easily identifiable 

symbol of the country recognised across the 

world by people of all ages and from all 

walks of life. 

I became involved with the panda 

project at RZSS - Edinburgh Zoo five years 

ago when we started discussions with the 

Chinese government, looking at the 

possibility of a pair of giant pandas coming 

to Edinburgh Zoo. 

Giant pandas have not been seen in the 

UK since the mid 1990’s and had never 

successfully bred while here. 

Today there are approximately 1,500 

giant pandas living in the wild in China. 

Large sums of money have been spent by 

the Chinese government to conserve and 

protect the giant panda in the wild and in the 

panda breeding centres run by the China 

Wildlife Conservation Association (CWCA) 

with both the wild and captive population 

being managed as one entity, by the State 

Forestry Administration, meaning that the 

captive population of around 300 is as 

equally important to the future of the 

species, as is the wild population. 

I have visited China several times over 

the past few years to discuss and plan for 

the transport and eventual arrival of pandas 

to Scotland. No time was more exciting, for 

me, than when I travelled to Chengdu, the 

provincial capital of Sichuan Province on 1st 

Dec to collect Tian Tian (sweetness) and 

Yang Guang (sunshine). Both pandas 

selected to come to Edinburgh Zoo have 

bred before and we were careful to look at 

the genetics of these two individuals to 

ensure we were bringing in two animals who 

had the best breeding potential but also 

ensuring that we maintained the best 

possible genetic diversity for their offspring. 

The flight from Amsterdam to Chengdu, 

takes approximately 10 hours, and on arrival 

in China you are welcomed to a busy vibrant 

city consisting of in excess of 20 million

people. The journey down to the China 

Conservation and Research Centre for the 

giant panda is approximately a two hour 

drive and you arrive into Ya’an, a small town 

situated due south of Chengdu. The local 

people are very friendly and welcoming and 

you can happily drink tea in the shops and 

cafés situated around the town. A further 

drive of 40 minutes takes you to the 

Bifengxia panda base. This centre was 

established in 2003. These centres are run 

by the CWCA and concentrate on managing 

and breeding the giant panda in captivity and 

by doing so they can study the animals while 

carrying out research into their behaviour 

and biology. 

On 4th Dec I arrived at the panda centre 

for the departure ceremony of Yang Guang 

and Tian Tian. Both animals were 

successfully encouraged into their transport 

crates in preparation for the 5,000 mile 

journey to Edinburgh. These leaving 

ceremonies are the culmination of work 

representing the important relationship 

between both nations for the development of 

economic, cultural and education links; and 

the importance of giant panda conservation. 

The ceremony started with traditional 

Chinese music and dance and finished with 

speeches from dignitaries from both parties 

highlighting the commitments and 

agreements put in place. 

We travelled back up to Chengdu where 

we moved the animals onto the “Panda 

Express”, a specially chartered FedEx Boeing 

777 flight from Chengdu which was allowed 

specific permission to fly directly 

into Edinburgh. The aircraft had 

facilities for myself and two other 

zoo colleagues to fly on the plane 

and so we were able to check on 

the pandas throughout the flight. 

We inspected the pandas every 

two hours in a bid to ensure that 

the trip from China to the UK was 

as stress free as possible for the 

pandas. During the flight both Tian 

Tian and Yang Guang ate and drank 

well and took the whole trip in their 

stride. 

As the “Panda Express” came into 

Edinburgh Airport we circled around 

Edinburgh and I was amazed by the amount 

of people standing around the perimeter of 

the airport eagerly awaiting the pandas’ 

arrival. Once the pandas were off-loaded at 

Edinburgh we travelled with a police escort 

through streets lined with people cheering 

and waving from the side of the road. 

We were met at the gates to Edinburgh 

Zoo by large groups of children and adults 

waving Chinese and UK flags and Scottish 

pipers welcomed our new Chinese charges 

to Scotland. 

The animals were both off loaded 

quickly into the panda exhibit at Edinburgh 

Zoo and both pandas began to eat our 

bamboo straight away. Pandas can eat a 

staggering 65 - 110 pounds of bamboo each 

and every day. We have secured our supply 

of bamboo from a plantation grower in the 

Netherlands ensuring that we can meet the 

dietary requirements of this very specialised 

feeder. 

Our male panda Yang Guang, though 

big, (20st in weight) is a gentle giant. He has 

a good relationship with his keepers and is a 

big hit with the visitors. Tian Tian is a much 

smaller female panda (15st 4lb in weight) 

and is very gentle and “sweet” as her name 

suggests. 

We are now concentrating our efforts on 

breeding from the pair of them and hopefully 

once Tian Tian comes into season, around 

March, she will be successfully mated and 

produce a cub later in the year. 

It is a tribute to the RZSS status in the 

conservation and zoo community that the 

Chinese authorities have selected Edinburgh 

Zoo to be the zoo in the UK to hold pandas 

and one of only three in Europe to house a 

breeding pair. 

Being involved in the panda breeding 

programme has been an opportunity 

afforded to so few dedicated to the care of 

animals, I feel very proud and often 

emotional, when I think of what has been 

achieved in bringing pandas to the UK and 

am very privileged to be able to see them 

here in Edinburgh; their new home.

The Inverness Courier published a 

whole page of photos from the Valentine’s 

disco, organised by the Highland LGBT 

Forum, so that was a big success with a 

good mix of guys and girls - some coming 

from as far afield as Aberdeen and Ullapool. 

The MacNab’s Midweek Meet-ups have 

become very popular with the guys this year 

and they are loving their own space to chat 

over food and drinks. So it’s been rebranded 

as Men@MacNabs and this is now a 

weekly opportunity for guys to socialise at 

the Columba Hotel in Inverness from 8pm

Chaplins would like to quash all 

rumours that they are imminently closing 

down! The club has a live PA from Ashley

This month has been full of good news 

for the gay scene, most notably the news 

that The Polo Lounge have finally got round 

to getting their heating fixed! It just goes to 

show that the new management have their 

priorities right, and wanted to show the guys 

from Heaven how we do business - with a 

fully heated building! I know he’ll not mind 

me pointing out that it was the one thing he 

seemed most proud of when I asked ‘what’s 

been happening this month’ - clearly a man 

that doesn’t get out much! 

Other than having the plumbers in, the 

Polo Lounge has been exploding with 

awesome nights and I must say the overall 

quality of everything that Polo produces just 

goes to show that time and effort is being 

put into the club which will always be the 

jewel of the crown. 

Glasgow Uni’s LGBT Society played host 

to QueerFest this month, the Student version 

of a Pride Weekend. With two great nights 

and a two fun filled days of activities - it was 

a great weekend to be part of and I was 

really glad to have been asked along to take 

part. 

It was on a Saturday night that we heard 

the awful news that our dearest sister 

Whitney Houston passed away, whilst

Bennets, Scotland’s oldest 

gay disco, has been closed 

down by its new owners. 

 

clubbers where deep in to their night - 

especially in the newly opened weekly night 

in The Trophy Room with DJ Suave Gav! 

Having just clicked play on a Whitney 

Megamix before the news came through, he 

didn’t know what to do - but his heartfelt 

announcement was sure to keep gays 

dancing away when he played her hit ‘I 

wanna dance with somebody’ as the closing 

number. The Trophy Room has gone from 

strength to strength having launched on 

New Year’s Eve as a monthly night, it swiftly 

changed to its weekly slot due to such high 

demand on the scene for a truly cheesy 

night. The new Trophy Room is above 

Speakeasy, and it’s all down to the relentless 

work of the Speakeasy team that the bar has 

pulled together, under the leadership of 

new manager Craig Bonner! 

Talking of Speakeasy, they had a 

reshuffle towards the end of this 

month to make way for the wonderful 

DJ Elaine Bellede Hell Blakely on a Wed 

night. She’s a busy lass, what with 

being a wannabe gay rights activist and 

DJing on our scene 6 nights a week! 

I’m so glad we’ve finally got something 

for the lesbians in Speakeasy which 

now has a new pool table and the 

coolest lesbian DJ on the scene! 

The reshuffle wouldn’t be 

complete without making sure that 

Nancy Clench still had her spot for 

playing musicals and singing some 

songs - so I’m glad she’s on a Thu and 

a Sun now! She did build up Wed 

nights over the past year and a half just 

enough to make sure DJ Lainey has a 

good crowd, so hopefully the big diva 

can pull it off on a Thursday too! 

Staying on the topic of Drag 

Queen Divas, we had a great send off 

for our pal Vanity von Glow - she 

hadn’t been getting the gigs in 

Glasgow apart from a few entertaining 

oldies in a Mecca Bingo - so she’s 

decided to move to London and try out 

the wondrous lights, cocktail bars and 

pretentious gays. Having been a cover 

girl for ScotsGay some time ago, we 

wish her all the best with her new venture! 

We’re still waiting on a sign for The 

Underground, but I’ve been assured since 

my last issue that the sign-makers are on 

their last warning before the owner searches 

for a new one! It certainly will finish off the 

new brand, and then I’ll stop calling it 

Revolver! 

I’m going to finally get round to visiting 

The Court Bar and The Waterloo this month 

so I can give you my low-down on what’s 

been happening there - so look out for that. 

I’ll also be writing about Scott Agnew’s new 

show ‘Tales from the Sauna’ which he’s 

performing in Glasgow for the Glasgow 

Comedy Festival between 15th Mar and 1st 

Apr!

LGBT History Month – and what a month it’s 

been! With the ‘Love Equally’ march being a 

resounding success; and community 

members, businesses and organisations all 

over raising awareness and funds. And 

there’s still time to catch a few History 

Month events! Check out the History Month 

Scotland website for more info. 

Looking forward at the New Town Bar, 

every Tue they have a Salsa Dance Class - a 

fun filled evening of full on Cuban passion, 

what more could you ask for! From 7-8pm 

AND also 8-9pm; at only £5 for each class 

this is not to be missed! And the NTB Boys 

have challenged you all to come and beat 

them at the quiz – if you think your grey 

matter can handle it! Thu 1st, Thu 15th and 

Thu 29th Mar. Carron will be your feisty 

hostess, and she won’t be bribed so don’t 

even try it...! The last boys that tried that 

were publicly humiliated. Though some 

people are very much into that. 

Friday Fun and Frolics at the Newtown will 

be seeing a few changes! Ruby Reynolds 

has departed, too much testosterone in the 

bar for her! So look out for a new host in the 

coming weeks, from 9pm onwards. Ruby we

BearScots have had a very successful 

month, with the return of the kissing booth 

for Valentine’s Night at the NTB. The Bears 

did their duty and puckered up their lips for 

charity, raising well over £100 for Gay Men’s 

Health! Go Bears! This is the kind of 

community giving that benefits everyone! A 

wee change for visitors to the monthly Bear 

nights too, in name only - Bears in the 

Basement in Edinburgh becomes Bears in 

the East, and Underground Bears becomes 

Bears in the West. ‘That which we call a 

rose, by any other word would smell as 

sweet’ and all that … Just to keep you 

updated! And to launch the change, they will 

have the kissing booth again coming soon. 

And the Edinburgh night is now on two 

floors, so guys can relax in the upstairs bar 

and then head on down to the basement bar. 

The New Town are also looking for 

volunteers to be waxed for charity! Coming 

in Apr, they will be holding a charity night for 

Waverley Care. If anyone is interested, 

please let the bar know. And finally - The 

NTB Boys will be running the Edinburgh 

Marathon in May for Waverley Care. 

Between them they will complete the 

relay and the half marathon. Pop into 

the bar and stick some money in the 

Marathon Bucket, or you could sponsor 

them on Facebook! This is a huge deal 

so support them big time! 

Over at Planet, the Planet Revolution 

goes from strength to strength! Any 

time of day, Planet is a hive of activity – 

abundant with customers sampling the

entertainment! Thursdays are QUIZ 

TIME – and most nights have begun

Up at Frenchies, Edinburgh’s oldest gay 

bar, they have started a new theme night on 

Mon. Entitled ‘Heavy Mondays’, this is a 

night of hard rock, free nibbles and promo 

shots for as little as £1! Dirty rock and cheap 

drinks … combine that with the hawt talent 

behind the bar and that’s a recipe for 

success! The crew at Frenchies are also 

continuing with their ‘Winter Sale’, with 

mega cheap pints and shots. And 

throughout Mar, they are showing a new 

exhibition entitled ‘Around The World’ – 

definitely worth seeing! Pop in for some 

culture, drinks and nibbles after a heavy day 

shopping or before going clubbing! In the 

super convenient Rose Street Lane area. 

And at Café Habana, Thu night is now 

Karaoke night with my awesome pal DJ 

Paton, and Fri nights feature scene fav DJ 

DazGlaz and DJ Paton alternate weeks. DJ 

Bunny still packs them in a good un as 

always on Sat nights. And Big Gay Sundays 

are going strong, with karaoke from 4pm 

and cabaret with such acts as Lady Razzle 

Dazzle. 

For the ladies, last month sadly saw the 

last Saturday Night Beaver at Cab Voltaire. 

The venue is closing, so the creators of this 

awesome night will be looking for a new 

venue to hold Beaver in future. Don’t worry, 

it’s not the end – it’s just another new 

beginning to this night of female fancy which 

has evolved in various shapes, forms, 

names, guises, promoters and homes alike – 

it will survive biological warfare! Watch this 

space for more info. 

At the Regent, it’s gonna be an extra 

special World Famous Regent Quiz on Tue 

28th Feb, as quiz hostess Mo will be out on 

the eve of her nuptials with her lovely wifeto-be 

Erin. That’s dedication for you! So 

drop into the bar and say hello to the happy 

couple; wish them luck and get those brain 

cells a-popping in what promises to be one 

hell of a quiz. I’d seriously get there early to 

avoid no-seat disappointment! And just a 

wee reminder that the quiz starts at 8pm 

now, so no excuses – this is totally do-able 

on a school night – you can be all done and 

dusted and in your onesie by10pm! 

Big news at The Street, who are 

introducing a new food menu from Thu 1st 

Mar. Their previous menu was already a 

favourite of mine – with their veggie chilli 

nachos equalling those of Nom de Plume in 

the Great Edinburgh Nacho-off which saw 

myself and my friend Kirsty sample nachos 

in over 10 city venues. Anyhoo, the new 

menu seems promising so get down and try 

it out! I also mentioned before about the 

new Street night called Sunday Sessions, 

which feature 4 different nights, all with their 

own identity, of local talent with the best 

underground sounds from around the world, 

joining together under one umbrella. 

The next Mumbo Jumbo nights coming 

up are Sat 3rd March and Sat 31st Mar. This 

is a really awesome night; a mixed 

underground club (and there’s not many of 

those left now!) with resident DJs Trendy 

Wendy and Steve Austin. Funk, soul, beats, 

mashups, disco, house and electro... the 

best sounds from across the underground 

for your perfect party soundtrack! This night 

is epic for those who crave something a bit 

different to the usual cheese and chart. 

At everyone’s favourite CC Blooms, 

they’re going to be giving the venue a huge 

facelift! ScotsGay will be reporting in depth 

about this over the next issue or so, and it’s 

looking like an initial start date of mid-Mar. 

The refurbishment will focus on the ground 

floor level which will be completely gutted. 

Stripping everything back to the stone and 

brick, raising ceilings, lifting the floor tiles, 

removing the mirrors… groundfloor CCs will 

transform into a stylish bar, serving quality 

drinks, cocktails, wines, champagne and 

food. Yes, they are putting the kitchen back 

in after 15 years without one! They will be 

serving tapas and sharing platters, along

but the ethos of CC’s will essentially stay the 

same. Keeping the old skool CCs fans happy 

while creating something new and exciting

refurb, they will be keeping downstairs open 

for business throughout. 

Fri 9th Mar sees ELECTROsexual celebrate 

its 3rd birthday party. The last 

ELECTROsexual was a doozer! The 3rd 

birthday party will be a HUGE event 

with lasers, bubble machines and tons 

of giveaways from T-shirts to CDs to 

glowsticks! Everyone loves a freebie! 

DJ Lucky Luciano and guests pump 

out the best ELECTRO beats, with free 

entry and bar promos from 11pm. 

Priscillas have launched New Look 

Tuesdays..... called ‘SK!NT’. It’s a 

brand new student night every Tue, 

with free food such as pizzas,burgers 

and nachos for all students between 7 

and 9pm!! (must show ID card) There 

are no excuses to be popping home 

first when you can eat for FREE in 

Priscillas! Also they are mixing it up a 

bit and bringing in exclusive out of 

house DJ’s each week! This night will 

be nothing but MUSIC all night long 

with no interruptions (ie no karaoke or
