LOT better than others, in every sense of the 

word - but attempts at bringing them all 

together tend to fall arse over heels. My club 

night Valley of the Dolls has always attracted 

a very particular crowd, as the Sunday 

Herald remarked: 

“Many of those arriving take their 

fashion direction from the late Australian 

performance artist Leigh Bowery… the 

fiercer the clothes the better; the same goes 

for make-up and hair. Animal horns protrude 

from the shoulders of the DJ’s leopard-skin 

coat; braces and Trilby hats bounce around 

beside Vivienne Westwood skirts.” 

Which is of course fabulous, but what 

about the rest? Those for whom pounding 

electro and wonderfully ridiculous clothes 

just doesn’t cut it? When do they get to 

shine?! 

Well, every dog has his day (and honey, 

there are some right dogs out there!), and 

EVERYONE who wants to will get the chance 

to show up and show off on Saturday 25th 

October as I, in association with Glasgay! 

debut Glasgow’s first EVER vogue ball! 

For the benefit of the uninitiated, a 

vogue ball is an event in which people 

“walk” (i.e. compete) for trophies and 

prizes. Those who walk often also dance and 

vogue while in various genres of drag often 

trying to pass as a specific gender and 

social class, and most people involved with 

ball culture belong to “houses” led by a 

single leader. 

“What is a house?”, we hear you say. 

As described in the seminal vogue 

documentary Paris Is Burning, I’ll lay it 

down sharply. 

“They’re families, but this is the new 

meaning of families. It’s not a question of a 

man, woman and children - it’s a question of 

a group of human beings in a mutual bond. 

A house is a gay street gang. Now, where 

straight street gangs get their rewards from 

street fights, a gay house street-fights at a 

ball, and you street-fight at a ball by walking 

in the categories.” 

There will be five categories where one 

individual from each house can catwalk off 

against the members of the other houses’ 

representatives in the same chosen 

categories. This competition has a category 

for everyone, from drag queens to 

transvestites (there’s a difference; look it up) 

to cross-dressers to fashionistas to uberbutch 

gays, bears, daddies - the lot! 

The winners from each catwalking round will 

then face-off against the remaining 

contestants, with the winner being being 

crowned Queen of Glasgay! 2008 and 

receiving some VERY special, exclusive 

‘money-can’t-buy’ prizes that will be 

announced on the night!

Cheerz Bar is still keeping you all 

entertained with all the usual stuff that 

you all come to expect there. Those 

lovely ladies Cherry & Jameekra did a grand 

job in helping Miss Lexie Lush raise some 

cash for Terrence Higgins Trust also thanks 

to DJ Steve for getting the crowd to dig 

deep. You’ll find Steve hard at it four nights 

a week to keep you gays amused. Upstairs 

at Cheerz Club, Mike Queen ‘o’ The Quiz 

Smith continues to dish out the questions 

each Thursday with alcohol as the main 

prize most weeks with a cash prize on the 

last Thursday of each month. Also I must 

mention DJ Stuart Jolly who never gets a 

mention in this column! 

The Market Arms had a wee beach 

party a while back and I must say that the 

sand has brought the floor up nice and 

clean! More theme nights are planned soon 

so keep an eye out for those. The banter 

continues though with Malky, Ricky & Julie. 

Foundation is looking for new DJs, so if 

you think you have the knack to keep a busy 

crowd going with good tunes and banter get 

in touch with the club. Rick, one of the 

owners of Foundation, will soon be on telly 

showing how well he can cook!! Look out 

for him on Channel 4’s Come Dine With Me. 

Miss Cherry Bakewell also makes an 

appearance on the show. Unfortunately, 

Jameekra had locked herself in a tanning 

booth at the video drive in so couldn’t make

Miss Lexie Lush is taking part in the 

final of Opportunity Frocks to be held at the 

glamorous ARTA in Glasgow on 29th 

November. Her charity partner is Terrence 

Higgins Trust and, as part of being allowed 

to take part, Lexie has to organise some 

fundraising. So far she has raised £158.30 

but let’s set our sights higher for her. You

the club tent opposite, the slap of mud on

Chlamydia testing will soon be available 

at some community pharmacies across 

Aberdeen City & Shire. This will open up 

testing to more people across the region. 

The test will be in the form of a kit that you 

take home and test and if positive return to 

the pharmacy for treatment. This however 

doesn’t replace the 6 monthly tests that 

people should be going for if they are

It’s been another busy month in the 

Capital, with pubs and clubs bustling with 

activity after the Festivals. I was surprised 

at how busy we were in Edinburgh after 

Pride in Glasgow, however the 

entertainment on offer was so good that the 

regulars just couldn’t keep away! 

CC Blooms hosted a foam party pride 

extraordinaire, where those who usually got 

down and dirty got down and … well, very 

wet! There were topless girls galore, and 

skinny boys in pants too! Proving that after 

the mad festival period, the team at CCs 

don’t get any rest – and it continues on 

throughout September and October, with the 

usual mixture of pop and cheesy tunes. And 

some class karaoke thrown in for good 

measure! Look out for posters advertising 

up and coming events – Mitch and Tim hope 

to bring some more talent to the stage, 

some spooky goings on for Hallowe’en and 

perhaps – if we’re lucky – another fabulous 

foam party!!!! 

Other big news of course was the 

crowning of Miss Gay Edinburgh. The 

winner, Lucy Ball, is a very deserving 

candidate and is a well known, friendly face 

on the scene. Oft to be seen gracing Planet 

Out with her fabulous live singer girlfriend 

Nadine, all at ScotsGay Towers wish Lucy 

huge luck and success at the finals. 

Furburger hosted the Miss Gay 

Edinburgh after party, and now have a 

regular spot of second Friday of the month 

at GHQ. And if you happen to be on the 

West Side and fancy some Furburger fun, 

the girls have launched Furburger in 

Glasgow, at FHQ on the last Friday of the 

month. Wow – looks like the ladies are 

planning domination. Just where will they 

pop up next?? Soooo, next Furburger in 

Edinburgh will of course be Friday 10th 

October, and then in Glasgow on Friday 31st 

October. Discount passes are available at 

Planet Out and Picardy Place. 

Speaking of Picardy Place, they featured 

some spectacular rainbow-coloured 

banners, flags and decoration round their 

signs the week ‘after’ Pride. For one day 

only, then they disappeared … perhaps they 

got a wee bit mixed up! They looked really 

good though, I personally think they should 

put them back! They spice things up, as do 

the excellent cheesy tunes of Miss Cilla 

Slack – the face that launches a thousand 

questions! Like why does she never reply to 

her e-mails?? 

GHQ are hosting a September Skool 

Disco in conjunction with Poptastic, on 

Thursday 18th September. It’s great to have 

Poptastic in Scotland, they’re a massive 

institution South of the Border. GHQ also 

have their first birthday coming up – 

already! My, doesn’t time fly! They have a 

whole weekend of fantastic celebrations 

planned, which will commence on Friday 

26th September as ‘Butlers in the Buff’ serve 

complimentary champagne and canapés. 

On Saturday 27th September, there will be a 

PA from Amanda Wilson of The 

Freemasons, and as if that wasn’t enough, 

the birthday bonanza will culminate in an 

80’s night on Sunday 28th September. Get 

yer pink Lycra and legwarmers out girls and 

boys, you’re gonna need them!

Long awaited scene news on: Planet 

Out are finally doing a Laurence Llewelyn- 

Bowen and giving their toilets a make-over. 

Fran suggested an unveiling ceremony to 

celebrate the momentous occasion – could 

be fun. What would be funner is if people 

stopped reverting to childhood and writing 

the names of their ‘for-one-week-only’ 

beloveds on the back of the doors. No one 

really cares who your shag-de-jour is folks, 

even if it does seem like the biggest news on 

the block after a few of Planet’s fantabulous 

cocktails …. tsk! 

The Street are mixing it up once again 

with a plethora of activities and promotions 

on offer. They’re doing 2-4-1 cocktails on 

Monday evenings, and Games night on a 

Tuesday, starring the one and only games 

console Wii – how to be sociable whilst 

playing computer. Ingenius! Quiz night 

returns on Wednesday 1st October, with a 

revamp – they promise new questions, new 

prizes and a new host – everyone’s favourite 

red-head, Trendy Wendy will be the woman 

with the mic. It’s called Orange Wednesdays 

which I think is the most fantastically named 

night we’ve had in Edinburgh for yonks! Get 

your all-day-breakfasts on Sundays, 

followed by Sunday movie matinees at 6pm 

and 8pm – featuring free pop corn. I can 

confirm that the movies being shown are of 

a good standard – it was ‘Pulp Fiction’ and 

‘Reservoir Dogs’ last time I was in. Not too 

shabby! Further celebrations are in order on 

Sunday 5th October, as the folks at The 

Street celebrate their 4th birthday. Drinks 

and nibbles will be served, as they celebrate 

a sophisticated four years on our scene. 

DJ Trendy Wendy is also launching a 

new club night this month, called Mumbo 

Jumbo at The Bongo Club. Launching on 

Saturday 20th September, it features an 

eclectic mix of music including funk, house, 

soul, electro and more! So for good-time 

grooves and party rockin’ tunes with DJs 

like Trendy Wendy, Colin Millar and Steve 

Austin, get yer butt to the Bongo. Future 

dates are Saturday 18th October and 

Saturday 15th November. 

Another date for your diaries is the 

announcement of a Xmas Tackno! Sure to 

be the cheesiest night of the festive season, 

they’re keeping the theme under wraps at 

the moment. They’ve said it ‘will be a 

cracker, without a turkey in sight’ so get it 

marked in your diaries early to avoid 

disappointment! It’s going to be on Sunday 

28th December at the most fantastic venue 

– The Voodoo Rooms, - very conveniently 

just off Princes St and St Andrew Square. 

LGL (Lothian Gay and Lesbian) 

Switchboard have announced the date of 

their bi-annual ball. Themed Saints and 

Sinners, it’s being held on Saturday 1st 

November at The Assembly Rooms. It 

features the Lismore Ceilidh band, DJ 

Michele and the Loud and Proud LGBT

Great news from The Regent – they 

have been included in the Campaign For 

Real Ale (CAMRA) Good Beer Guide 2009, 

for the fourth year running! Putting our 

scene on the map in so many more ways 

than one – well done Regent! Apart from 

Deuchars IPA which is always available, the 

range of guest ales changes regularly so 

there’s always a wide variety on offer. In 

addition to the real ales, they have recently 

introduced Weston’s Old Rosie Cloudy 

Scrumpy on hand pump. This weighs in at a 

hefty 7.3% abv – guaranteed to knock your 

socks off! So do drink sensibly! Weston’s 

say that it’s a ‘full flavoured, appley, cloudy 

scrumpy …. Suitable for vegetarians and 

coeliacs’. Vegetarian cider … whatever 

next!! 

The Regent will also be hosting a bear 

gathering on Sunday 5th October, as part of 

BearScotsFest 2008. To honour the event, 

the guest beer will be Beartown Brewery’s 

Kodiak Gold. How fantastically named! 

The Regent’s art exhibition space is 

still proving very popular. The featured artist 

changes every month, and almost all 

exhibitors have sold at least one item. They 

are now booked up until April 2009, but if 

you’re interested in having work shown next 

summer or beyond, do get in touch with 

them. 

As if all that wasn’t enough, The Regent 

are also offering a book swap/buy service. 

Have a look at the books available on the 

bookshelf, and if you fancy one, take it and 

leave a donation in the collection tin. And if 

you have any books gathering dust on your 

own shelves that you can donate, it’s better 

than handing them into a charity shop cos 

all proceeds from The Regent’s service go to 

World Aids Day. Congrats to The Regent for 

this – it’s a really valuable service. 

Edinburgh’s newest venture, Café Nom 

De Plume (formerly Sala Café Bar) on 

Broughton Street, will be opening soon and 

are currently advertising for both full and 

part time staff. Anyone interested should

Edinburgh-based LGBT organisation 

Equality Network held a bake stall at Pride, 

selling 350-400 cakes, scones and cookies. 

They raised a fantastic £243, which will go 

toward the furtherance of LGBT equality in 

Scotland. Yaay to everyone who donated, 

and of course to the Equality Network. 

And finally, The Queen Margaret 

University LGBT and Sexualities Research 

Network has been awarded funding to hold 

four Scottish-based seminars on LGBT lives. 

This is the first time that a seminar series on 

LGBT issues such as this has been held 

across Scotland. It provides a unique 

opportunity to bring together different 

groups and individuals, with a shared 

interest in the Scottish LGBT community.

The Centre closed in February after its funding came to 

an end, but has now reopened and is celebrating its 

re-launch in October with a lively week of events 

designed to showcase the range of activities and 

services it has to offer.

Hola!!!! Gee whizz what a month it has 

been, Glasgow Pride was err 

entertaining to say the least. We may 

not have managed to re-create Manchester 

Pride, but judging by the amount of vomit 

lining the streets and sore heads on the 

Monday, a good time was had by all and we 

definitely managed to show you how 

goddamn PROUD we all are!!! 

Enough of the past: let’s move swiftly 

onto the future, here is the down low for the 

up and coming month…. 

Delmonicas is reigning supreme as 

goddamn per with their plans for Freshers’ 

Week which was due to kick off on Friday 

19th of September with their ‘Back to Skool’ 

night hosted by Miss Leah and my all time 

favourite: the very fabulous Miss Liza. I’ve 

been told that all attendees are to dress in 

school uniforms and see what happens… I 

await with bated breath to see what the 

creative heads at Dels’ have came up with 

this time and with even more anticipation to 

see how many hotties in shorts show up! 

Del’s sister club, The Polo Lounge is 

carrying on the theme after hours with a 

performance from the poptastic err 

Poptastic! On this night there will be 

detention and shagtag- oh good Lord as if 

the Polo needs an excuse for saucy goings 

ons and prizes galore! After all that I can’t 

help but think, what the heck else could you 

possibly want people? Then I rememberedmy 

attendance obviously! But fear not, I 

shall be there, no doubt drunkenly slurring 

and sexually harassing the manager as per. 

Other goings on at Delmonicas this 

month include; a Masquerade Ball with John 

aka ex ScotsGay writer and total cheeky 

bastard (but that’s why we love him so!) and 

Do Darren (he’s hot) hosting the evening so 

banter and music shall be both be bouncing 

if past performances are anything to go by! 

And remember you can’t have a masquerade 

ball with no masks, so please ladies and 

gents MASKS ARE A MUST! Also worth a 

mention is that in aid of Freshers’ Week the 

G1 Group have created PinkFlix for students 

which you can get from behind any of their 

bars which will give you discounts in outlets 

such as Clonezone and Zavvi plus many 

more. 

The newest addition to the Glasvegas 

scene- Speakeasy (just off Ingram Street) is 

also practically punting their backsides to 

get you in and your pennies spent with a 

whole host of goings on though some are 

better than others I hasten to add… Tuesday 

nights is their quiz night which is hosted by 

Tom Urie (of Chewin’ The Fat fame) but alas 

I am sorry to say after attending this 

recently, I wasn’t too impressed, the 

questions are ridiculous and attendance is 

poor. In the theme of Freshers’ Week: 

teacher says “Must do better!” Wednesday 

nights are their ‘Playlist Night’ which allows 

punters the chance to plug in their IPods 

and play their own tunes. Other than that the 

best night of their line up is the live acoustic 

sessions on Sundays which previously have 

had Rosaria (recent winner of Dels got 

talent) performing and trust me to hear this 

girl singing is more than reason enough to 

attend! 

Speakeasy’s ‘better half’ and Glasgow’s 

first and only ladies only bar FHQ (upstairs 

from Speakeasy) has Leah’s game night on

have also been brainstorming their asses off 

and have came up with the amazing idea of 

downloadable passes from their Bebo site 

so that leaves us all even more money for 

drinks, yippee! With all drinks on a Thursday 

only two bucks and for September weekend, 

Bennets has a selection of drinks 

promotions so cheap it’s practically stealing 

(I fear I may have been watching too many 

adverts for couches…) for example Corona 

and vodka mix will be only £1.50 all night on 

Sunday 28th September and the word on 

the pink streets is there are also going to be 

lots of giveaways! 

Small note for all fans of the Arches, 

unfortunately their premises is going to be 

closed for the next six weeks so at the time

at all lately you will know that their Burly

to suffer mid week hangovers Byblos in the 

Merchant City is running Passionality on 

Mondays and Tuesdays which if ya didn’t 

already know is Glasgow’s longest running 

mixed night… (Who knew? Eh?) The doors 

open at 11pm and entry is an actually quite 

horrific £8/£6 but they have got house 

music in one room and R’n’B/chart classics 

in another and the atmosphere is good, so 

why the fuck not? 

Those preferring a more relaxed social 

encounter may want to head along to the 

very small and cosy Court Bar on Hutcheson 

Street which is open from Noon to Midnight 

seven days a week with food being served 

until 7pm. Though small word of warning, 

I’ve been informed the bar mainly attracts a 

straight crowd during the day. 

All in all as you can see the Glasgow 

scene is (unlike our economy) BOOMING 

and expanding at an almost alarming rate 

which is why we are officially (in my own 

pretty little mind at least) the biggest and 

the best scene in Scotland! So, Edinburgh 

as much as I love you, you can put that in 

your pipe and smoke it! No more reasons

Paul Sinha likes a challenge. You may 

have seen his appearance on a recent 

episode of the BBC’s weekly nerdfest 

Mastermind, in which he answered some 

rather tough questions on the sixteenthcentury 

Portuguese explorer Ferdinand 

Magellan. An odd choice of specialist 

subject for a stand-up comedian, it has to be 

said. It’s even odder when you consider that 

Paul knew absolutely nothing about him 

until two months ago. He decided to set 

himself the task of researching a topic from 

scratch for his Mastermind appearance. 

It’s a long story, which Paul recounts 

with his customary eloquence. Last year he 

took part in a special edition of University 

Challenge as one of a team made up of 

stand-up comedians. After a valiant halfhour 

of cerebral jousting, they failed to 

secure a victory. But Paul was hooked. He 

decided to enter Mastermind, and coasted 

through the audition with ease. Once 

accepted, he needed a specialist topic. 

“While I was preparing for University 

Challenge I came across the name of 

Ferdinand Magellan”, he explains. “So I 

decided to learn everything I could about 

him for Mastermind. It all went reasonably 

well, except on the show I answered the first 

question incorrectly. It was really easy, too. 

Quite embarrassing.” 

As a rising star of the UK comedy 

circuit, it seems ironic that most of his 

television appearances to date have been a 

result of his aptitude for trivia, rather than 

his ability to make people laugh. But as a 

practising GP, he’s already exceeding most 

people’s expectations of a typical stand-up 

comedian. 

Paul is very easy to talk to. We’ve met 

in The Albany, a pub just off Great Portland 

Street in London. When I arrive, Paul’s 

already drinking a latte. He tells me it’s 

probably too early for a beer. As a qualified 

doctor who likes to ridicule our bingedrinking 

culture when performing on stage, I 

had half-expected him to be teetotal. 

“I consider myself to be part of Britain’s 

binge drinking problem”, he tells me, 

laughing. “To a lesser extent these days, it 

has to be said, but I’ve certainly made a fool 

of myself on a number of occasions when 

I’ve been under the influence. A lot of my 

stand-up is anecdotal, so I like to talk about 

this topic from a personal perspective, 

especially since it’s one of those things that 

affect us all. Although I’m a gay Asian 

doctor, what I’ve got in common with 

everyone else is that I’m a man trying to go 

about his daily life without getting into 

scrapes with horrible, nasty, aggressive 

people. And I think that’s what seems to 

define us now, that were all trying to get 

through life and avoid trouble.” 

There’s an undeniable universality to 

this concept which must have appeal for 

comedy audiences who, let’s face it, have 

normally had one too many pints 

themselves. It’s a sad indictment of British 

culture that whenever we choose to spend 

an evening out on the town, we run the risk 

of being attacked for no comprehensible 

reason. Paul is interested in the arbitrary 

nature of such incidents, and what it 

suggests about our society. It’s quite 

ambitious territory for a stand-up comedian 

but, like I say, Paul Sinha likes a challenge. 

“We need to get far away from the idea 

that drinking as much as possible as quickly 

as possible is a viable way to have a great 

night. Because it isn’t. You end up in a 

state where you can’t remember what 

happened, so even if there were any magical 

moments you wouldn’t be able to appreciate 

them.” 

So why do you think we do it? 

“Fundamentally, most British people aren’t 

brave enough to be the people we want to 

be when we’re sober”, Paul suggests. “So 

when we get drunk we’re looking to achieve 

an idealised state of mind. We want to be 

able to approach that person we fancy, we 

want to be able to stand up to people who 

are behaving like twats. In short, we want to 

escape from our normal, suppressed, 

slightly cowardly state, and move into a 

state where we’re witty and entertaining and 

forthright.” 

Paul is careful to emphasise that he’s 

not being self-righteous. “Like I say, I’m 

just as bad as everyone else. When I talk 

about these things on stage I’m having a go 

at myself as much as anything. But we need 

to ask ourselves why British people tend 

towards violence when they’re intoxicated. 

In Iceland they binge drink from Midnight till 

about seven in the morning, but they’re all 

singing and dancing and as happy as can 

be. There must be some deficiency in the 

British psyche that’s difficult to pinpoint. I 

do think that people who are happily 

married, in love, or have children don’t tend 

to get violent when they’re drunk. So 

perhaps it’s a reflection of an underlying 

unhappiness with where you are as a human 

being.” 

Now that the topic of conversation has 

turned to family life, I take the opportunity to 

quiz Paul on his background. He tells me 

that, like himself, his parents are in the 

medical profession; his father is a doctor 

and his mother is a nurse. They came to 

England in 1968 from their birthplace of 

Calcutta, “the cultural centre of India”, as 

Paul describes it. Together, they provided 

Paul with what he describes as a “very 

uneventful existence in the middle of 

suburbia”. By his own admission, this 

background was hardly ripe for comedy. 

“I had a very dull, uneventful, middleclass, 

public school educated background, 

with the inevitable path to medical school. A 

lot of comics travel back to their childhood 

to look for the inner pain or conflict, but 

there really wasn’t any for me.” He laughs, 

and adds: “I had to find that as an adult”. 

Paul tells me that his parents raised him 

in the Hindu tradition, and I want to know 

whether he still identifies as such. “Yeah, I 

suppose”, he says after a moment’s thought. 

“I was raised as a Hindu, but it was all about 

the social ceremony of a few religious 

festivals and little else. It’s a cultural thing, 

rather than a strict adherence to a set of 

religious laws, much like Christians who 

only ever celebrate Christmas and Easter.” 

“Hinduism is not a label that I think 

about that much because I’m not a religious 

person. If I had to classify myself I’d say 

I’m an atheist who is perfectly prepared to 

believe he might be wrong. I definitely don’t 

believe in a biblical God. I believe we don’t 

have all the answers, and I believe we don’t 

know why we’re here, and I believe there 

could be something very odd going on in 

the universe that we don’t know about, but 

the idea of a biblical God is complete 

nonsense in my opinion. How can you 

account for a super-being who created this 

incredibly complex world only to be 

obsessed by relatively minor details? The 

being who created a duck-billed platypus is 

not going to be concerned about the gender 

of the person I’m sleeping with.” 

Paul has clearly given this issue a great 

deal of thought. And well he might. As we 

all know, much of the opposition to LGBT 

rights in the UK today is a result of the 

ignorance inherent in organised religion. 

Paul tells me that he finds it difficult to 

understand how anyone can look at our 

society and think that gays are the problem. 

“It’s funny if you think about it,” he says. 

“It’s not gays who are setting off bombs, it’s 

not gays who are causing wars, it’s not gays 

who are stabbing people in city centres on a 

Saturday night, and yet somehow certain 

people can look at everything that’s going on 

in the world and reach the baffling 

conclusion that it all started with the 

introduction of gay civil partnerships. It’s 

difficult to fathom.” 

That said, Paul is quick to point out how 

much progress has been made. “I’m of a 

generation that remembers when it was all 

so much worse for gay people. And I get 

very frustrated with those who take it for 

granted. Whenever I hear someone 

slagging off Peter Tatchell, I think to myself, 

‘you have no idea the degree to which he 

was out there fighting for your rights when it 

was extremely unfashionable to do so’. And 

there’s a whole generation of gay people 

who just don’t appreciate how much hard 

work was put in on their behalf by the likes 

of Tatchell. They think that life is just one 

big ketamine party, and I find that very 

frustrating. But then, I grew up in the 

eighties when it was definitely not cool to be 

gay. The tabloids were just out to destroy 

us, and they went about it with the most 

hateful language.” 

“One of the good things about this 

Labour government was how 

uncompromising they’ve been when it 

comes to pushing through pro-gay 

legislation. And what’s happened is that all 

the debates seem to have been won. If you 

speak out against gay civil partnerships now 

people think you’re a bit of a freak, because 

it’s pretty obvious to everyone who has eyes 

that gay civil partnerships are exactly that – 

civil. They’re a very civilising thing. 

Likewise, up until recently it was a 

mainstream viewpoint that gays shouldn’t 

join the Army. But if you say that these days 

you look like an idiot, because there have 

been gays in the Army for a while now and 

there hasn’t been a single problem. As I 

say, the debates have been won. The only 

people left are the religious because they 

have to believe in their book. They’ve got no 

other option. But the rational debates have 

definitely been won. I’m very much of a 

view that religion has no place in Western 

government.” 

Although Paul’s stand-up does 

incorporate such socio-political concerns, 

it’s essentially his undeniable ability to make 

people laugh that makes him so popular. 

Many ScotsGay readers will have seen 

Paul’s performances before, as he has 

played at a number of Scottish venues over 

the years. Earlier this year he performed a 

solo show in Perth, and he’s become a 

recognised feature on the Edinburgh Fringe. 

After a highly successful performance at The 

Stand in Glasgow earlier this year, he’ll be 

returning to the venue for a second time for 

Glasgay! on Sunday 5th October. He tells 

me that he’s very fond of the venue, and he 

has good reason. 

“I think The Stand is run in a very good 

way. They’re very specific about the sort of 

comics they book and they won’t 

compromise on that. It’s one of the reasons 

why I look forward to playing there so 

much. I think it’s really useful that Glasgow 

has a large Jongleurs club to cater for 

people in large groups; hen parties, birthday 

parties, that kind of thing. People who want 

a more “civilised” night generally go to The 

Stand. I think that’s why it works really well. 

They don’t have to provide a service to large 

groups of drunks.” 

Of course, there’s a tongue-in-cheek 

quality to Paul’s tone when he says this. 

Like most successful comics he does play 

Jongleurs regularly, and is happy to do so. 

“There are two sides to my comedic 

persona. There are the self-indulgent onehour 

monologues that I take to the 

Edinburgh Festival, and then there are the 

more condensed twenty minute sets that I 

perform at Jongleurs. It’s a very different 

type of experience. And that’s not to say 

that one is necessarily better than the other. 

The good thing about Jongleurs is that you 

can be playing to three or four hundred 

people in one night, something you can very 

rarely do when you’re a solo comedian. The 

bad side is that it’s difficult to relax, because 

you know that you’re only one mistimed 

joke away from the audience losing their 

interest or turning on you. It’s much more 

of a bear-pit atmosphere. A lot of people 

might think that doing an hour solo show is 

much more stressful than doing a twenty 

minute set in Jongleurs, but that’s not the 

case. People who come to see your solo 

show are much more patient, and more 

relaxed; there’s a greater sense of positivity 

in the room. As an audience, they tend to 

have different expectations.” 

And what about gay audiences? “I 

think it is a different type of atmosphere in 

gay venues. For instance, I’ve always 

written a lot of jokes about sport, because 

I’m a huge sports fan, and these jokes tend 

not to go down so well in front of 

predominately gay audiences. Similarly, I 

tell jokes about gay culture and gay 

subculture that won’t have as much 

resonance if you’re straight. To be honest 

I’ve never particularly gone out of my way to 

appeal to one type of audience or another. I 

try to be as universal as possible.” 

“The show I’m bringing up to Glasgay! 

is not particularly gay, although of course 

my anecdotes are told from a gay 

perspective. As I’m sure you’re aware, I’m 

not part of the long tradition of camp 

comedy or double entendres, or celebrity 

gossip. That’s not really what I do. My 

shows consist of fairly traditional, 

autobiographical, storytelling stand-up. 

I ask Paul whether he thinks that this is 

part of his appeal, that he is resisting the 

stereotype. “Well I’m not deliberately 

resisting the stereotype. I’m just being 

myself. It just so happens that I don’t look 

after myself, I have two gym memberships 

but I never go to the gym, and I’m obsessed 

with sport to the extent that I stay up till four 

in the morning watching live streams of 

Andy Murray playing tennis at foreign 

tournaments. The only stereotype I really 

fulfil is having a relentless appetite for men, 

and I’m more than happy about that.” 

“What I always say is that I might seem 

very unusual in my interests and attitudes, 

but I’m not. It’s just that people who are like 

me tend not to draw attention to themselves. 

There are, in fact, a huge number gay sports 

enthusiasts, gay football fans, gay indie 

music fans, whatever, but they tend to be at 

home rather than out on the scene. So I’m 

not unusual, I’m just unusual in terms of the 

gay entertainment circuit.” 

This strikes me as something of an 

understatement. Paul’s other career as a 

doctor already marks him out as an unusual 

candidate for stand-up. Harry Hill is another 

obvious example, but their styles are so 

wildly different that they don’t invite 

comparison. I ask Paul about how it feels to 

have two such incongruent professions. 

Isn’t it rather like leading a double life? 

“Of course, they’re very different jobs”, 

he tells me, leaning back in his chair. “They 

both involve telling lies to strangers, they 

both involve convincing people, and they 

both involve a certain degree of 

performance skills. But other than that 

they’re totally dissimilar. I don’t mix the two 

at all. I’m not one of these people who try 

to make jokes at work, far from it. I have a 

far more serious persona as a doctor.” 

I can see immediately how this would 

be the case. Paul comes across as a highly 

intelligent and thoughtful person, but with 

the kind of caustic objectivity that is so 

essential for comedic success. He’s also a 

real grafter, a quality evinced not only by his 

ability to maintain two jobs, but also by the 

fact that he was working the London 

comedy circuit when he was still 

undertaking medical training. “Back then, I 

was working 100-hour weeks as a hospital 

doctor, if the truth be told I wasn’t taking 

this comedy lark very seriously at all. It was 

just an interesting hobby at that point, 

nothing more than that. Now I’ve got to the 

point where I’m working less and less in the 

medical world. The day may come when I 

give it up altogether.” 

If his burgeoning success on the 

comedy circuit is anything to go by, that day 

cannot be very far away.
