GLASGOW
Well – we’re a quarter of the way through
2010 now, which can mean only one thing – only
ten days of cream egg season left!!! Get them
while you can people. While the shops
shamelessly attempt to tempt us out of our new
years resolutions of getting fit (which I just know
you’re all sticking to as well as I am hehe) the big
city has something quite different to offer that will
see us through Easter and the sad demise of yet
another cream egg season!
If you’re looking for something fun, get down
to Priscillas on Sat 3rd Apr where they’re holding
an Easter Hunt!! It’s a case of hunt the chick and
win a prize. Now just where do you think the
Priscillas fluffy chick could be hiding???! Priscillas
continue the Easter sprit on Sun 4th Apr with Lala
Hotpants hosting a night of karaoke, prizes and
tomfoolery. And in a Not Too Many DJs marathon,
DJs Blondie, DJ Bird, Boozy Soozy, DJ Angie, DJ
Lynnie, and Nathan are hosting a new club night
every Monday called Skint. Featuring vodka and
mixer for 99p, and if you buy a nominated drink on
the night you also get your tea free! Bargain or
what??!!
Now if you want to go out over Easter
weekend but can’t get into the Easter spirit, then
Planet is yer place!! Continuing on in their great
theme night tradition which will now be happening
monthly, they are hosting a Beach Party on Sat 3rd
Apr. Surf’s up folks, grab yer shades and join in
the fun!! The hotties at Planet promise summer
cocktails, drinks promos and free give-aways –
and pretty people in small clothes. Dress code is,
spade and join the party at what promises to be an
awesome night. Don’t forget yer bucket n spade
Randomania also continues in Planet every Thu
and Sun, promising an eclectic mix of top tunes,
karaoke and drinks promos. And ladies – can you
please stick to using the pool cues for their
intended purpose!!!
Then onto Easter Sun itself!! Down at Habz,
Scott Mellors is hosting Karaoke from 4-8pm,
followed by cabaret with Ms Coco Chanel, from
9pm on Sun 4th Apr. DJ Paton then finishes the
night off with the best tunes in town! Drink
promotions apply all evening – eg double vodka
and Redbull for a mere £3.20!!! And it’s proper
Smirnoff folks, none of that cheap gutrot served at
lesser establishments. An ideal way to end the
weekend for those planning to party hard – cos
there’s no work the following day! Wooooot!!! And
if you’re at a loss for somewhere fun to go of a Sat
evening, join DJ Bunny spinning some belter tunes
and all the cheese you can stomach. A heady mix
of today's tunes and yesterdays classics.
And fantastic news for the multitude of
Tackno fans out there – celebrate Easter Sunday
with The Gospel according to Tackno - a special
event on Sun 4th Apr. With fab venue,The Electric
Circus. The Electric Circus is incidentally the venue
where Tackno originally started – as you oldies will
be aware. So back to its roots!!! The venue now
features private Karaoke rooms! So go on, lose
your religion and your dirty old habits with this
special theme of all things Holy! Worship at the
altar of cheese with DJ Trendy Wendy and make
your confessions on the dancefloor with Fancy
'Mother Superior' Nancy and her naughty novices.
Witness a baptism of bad taste as they roll away
the boulder & rave from the grave at Tackno's
resurrection party. Keep the faith, reprobates!!!
And warm up for Tackno at the official pre-club
party at The Street from 9pm. Capacity at this
event is limited to it might be an idea to purchase
tix in advance to avoid disappointment. For more
info touch down on www.tackno.com
GHQ have a variety of famous faces over an
action-packed weekend, kicking off on Fri 2nd Apr
with the utterly gorgeous Miss Cilla Slack at 9pm.
The lady herself will introduce a special live PA
from the CHEEKY GIRLS!!!! Sat 3rd Apr brings DJ
Darren playing a mix of cheese and pop in the
main room, with D...owzer in the dance bar with
House and electro. And seeing the weekend out
with yet another PA, on Sun 4th Apr Cilla Slack is
back at 10pm and welcomes on stage RACHEL
MCFARLANE singing her No.1 hit 'TAKE ME TO
THE CLOUDS ABOVE' & 'LOVER'!! With free
entry all NIGHT and drinks from £1, we really are
being spoiled for choice!!
Next up, those nautical naughties at the
Regent are hosting a Sea Shanty Night on Tue
13th Apr. Local folksinger Ian Bruce (of Michelin
Starred restaurant The Plumed Horse) will lead
the evening and is expecting everyone will join in
the choruses (with a Hi-Hi-Hi and a Ho-Ho-Ho!!!).
And not to worry if you don't know the words -
songsheets will be provided! There's even a prize
for the best-dressed sailor!!! So get your sea legs
ready for this fantastic free event. Many of you
will of course be aware of the great success of
The Regent Showcase last month, where local
singer-songwriters (and comedians and poets)
performed in the pub. It was great to hear live
music in The Regent, and I’m delighted to say
they’re planning another Showcase soon!! And
with the performers taking over only the back
room, if you’re a party pooper who doesn’t like
entertainment then you can enjoy your cask ale in
peace!
Speaking of cask ale, The Regent was voted
Edinburgh Pub Of The Year 2010 (jointly with
Cloisters Bar) by The Campaign For Real Ale. And
how very well deserved!! And for the many fans
out there of real ale, you can now expect a more
regular supply of Stewart’s Edinburgh Gold. Yum!
And for all those budding artists, seasoned
exhibitors and for those of us who just like to
spectate, the gallery space in the back room of
The Regent is getting even more popular. Local
artists can exhibit their work for one month at a
time and they are currently booked up until the
end of October.
Would you believe that the spectacular little
diamond that is Café Nom De Plume is nearing its
1st birthday?! The year has passed so quickly,
and the venue has built up quite the reputation for
their gorgeous, varied and reasonably priced food
menu – together with fab range of plonk. A wee
mentie from the owners – ‘We can't believe how
quickly the first year has gone. We are so happy
that we've built up a loyal, regular clientele in
such a short time. We now seem to be nestled
quite comfortably in the Edinburgh scene.’ How
lovely to see a new venue make such a success
and impact!! And on a wee sad note, Adam (who
currently works in Nom De Plume but has also
previously been assistant manager at The Regent)
is off to the Big Smoke. After all the talk, the talk,
the talk, he is finally doing the walk. Although I’m
sure he’s actually getting the train. He will be
sorely missed!!
Finishing the month off nicely at Priscillas on
Sat 24th Apr is a night of song with scene fave
Scarlett Diamonte, singing live into the early hours.
And following that, on Fri 30th April is a fantastic
night of cabaret with fabby drag queen Kitty Litter,
who I’m sure is more fragrant and appealing than
her name!!!
Now if all that alcohol has left you a bit dim,
give yer grey matter a fine tune at theeeee king
quiz of the scene. The World Famous Regent Bar
Quiz falls this month on Tue 27th Apr, from 9pm
sharp. Best to get your seats for 8.30pm to avoid
disappointment, as this tends to get busy – and
with a plentiful bowl of free nibbles of each table,
why the hell not!! Sophisticated atmosphere,
friendly ambience and a great drinks selection,
what more could you want other than the fabulous
Ms Siobhan who co-organises this amazing event
with all proceeds going to an LGBT charity.
Some more exciting events coming up with
those fabulous folks at Bearscots. The
Theatrebears have a fantastic line up of culture as
they do a magical theatre tour over the next few
months. Some of the fantastic dates coming up
are: a visit to the opera La Boheme, on Sat 24th
Apr at the Festival Theatre’; ‘The Cherry Orchard’
on Sat 8th May at the Lyceum and the amazing cult
classic ‘The Rocky Horror Show’ on Sat 26th Jun
at the Playhouse. Put these dates in your diary
ASAP, then check out Bearscots on Facebook for
info on how to get a discounted ticket. Also, a wee
heads up that the Bears will be having a wine
tasting night coming up in June. How very
sophisticated! If it sounds like your kinda thing,
then do get in touch with the guys either via
facebook or events@bearscots.org.uk.
Unfortunately, it seems that plans to hold
Pride Scotia 2010 at the Hibs Stadium have come
unstuck. Because of the building works for the
replacement stand, it seems that there isn't going
to be room for us this year and Pride Scotia are
having to set their sights nearer to the Gay Village
for events after the Pride March on Sat 26th Jun!
And lastly but by no means least, the biggest
news is that it’s now only 9 short weeks til my
nuptials!! Making an honest woman of my Dawn,
it’s plan plan plan for what promises to be THE
event of the century. Magicians, burlesque
dancers, the fantastic Cilla Slack spinning the
discs, grown up food and a Humanist ceremony
we wrote ourselves! Watch this space!!
Just like Herpes - you thought you were rid
but unfortunately I have flared up once again! All
the dramaramama has calmed down and many a
beverage and insult has been consumed and/or
flung - so business as usual. Hola my wee hens!
What a bloody month this has been, not literally
though thank God. Thought I had better off clarify
that since this is the city with the most murders
annually in Europe! There are so many new events
and venues and goings on that I’m not even sure I
know where to start to be honest. One thing I will
say is competition is healthy and as one of the new
venue owners stated ‘in the end this will benefit the
customers’ which in case you hadn’t clicked is
you, ya dumbass!
So starting off with yet another newbie- the
old club Cube on Queen Street in our grand yet
somehow always slightly smelly city centre is now
called Milan and they have a new gay night starting
on the 14th of April with Daisy Duke aka Paul
McGill being the brains, brawn and beauty behind
it all. I was quite surprised to hear of yet another
new night on a Wed, it literally is the biggest gay
night of the week at the moment. Play with DJ
Darren and his team is still a major success and is
jumping week in-week out with all different theme
nights and promos and I’m not quite sure how it
can be beaten. Am honestly yet to have a bad night
in there and the atmosphere is immense. Previous
theme nights from them have included ‘Playboy
Mansion’ and entry is free before Midnight for the
whole of March too….
Also fighting for your attendance on a Wed is
the I Pop night in the Polo Lounge which is free
entry all night and ALL DRINKS £1, which if you’ve
ever seen the phenomenal selection stocked at the
Polo then you will know is almost too good to be
true! But it’s on Bebo so it must be true! The club
is open untill 3am and the eternally popular DJ
Devine has all the best tunes at his finger tips for
your pleasure. Also coming up in le Polo is an 80's
weekend (please God can we make sure my
mother doesn’t get in, she loves a side step
accompanied with a finger snap to an 80's beat)
with Hazel Dean live kicking it all off on Fr 30th Apr
then Katrina and the Waves on Sat 1st May and
last but you know never least is the flame haired
Liver Bird Sonia on Sun 2nd May…Come on, even
I love her. Though my granddad even more so, he
turned into a right perv when she was on
Eurovision. No wonder I'm on Prozac.
Singing big praises for Speakeasy on John
Street this month, their FHQ upstairs lesbian bit
which is now allowing in men is SUPERB. Have

bumped into many a face I thought had vanished
off the face of the Earth and found the new love of
my life on the premises too aka The Moscow Mule
and boy oh boy does it kick. Who ever knew ginger
beer could be so much fun? I suggest you get in
there pronto and get one before they sell out, cos
at £1.99 a pop and enough alcohol in it to give you
alcoholic poisoning they are ever so popular. Yum
yum, almost as delish as some of the new staff
(almost). One of the many new nights added to
their already entertaining and imaginative calendar
is the Glee night every Sun - which is on from 4pm
till late so time to join Jamie (think I sexually
harassed him last week - sorry Jamie!) and the
Speakeasy staff for a sing-along. Headsets and
everything provided and as everyone knows
Speakeasy does fabulous food too, all in all an
ideal Sun outing and if you haven’t managed to
catch the much hyped and loved show
yet….there’s your opportunity! Also remember if
you pop into Speakeasy or FHQ you should pick up
your passes for Gay @ Play!
So as far as I ken this is purely rumour but
apparently there will be a competition for a
Bennets boy and girl. What this will entail I have no
clue but Bobby and the Bunty's team always come
up with something good! For the audience usually
not the contestants mind lol. Ooft the gay scene is
awfully panto sometimes, I have cringed at many a
Mr Gay UK competition. And what in the name of
heavens happened to that anyways? Jeezo
so many questions this month, I’m not doing
very well here am I? But I will get back to
you with answers. Just remind me! Bennets
are also now doing a new Mon night with DJ
Raymo from the Arches. The advertising for
the night is as follows ‘Gay, bi straight or
curious? Come along for a night where
everything may not be what it seems. Let
your dark side shine!’ Oooh er Matron!
Putting this one on my personal calendar to
attend right now. See you in there! Drink
prices have plummeted to a rather
phenomenal £1 and entry is FREE.
Has anyone noticed the major influx of
‘heterosexual’ young men on the scene at the
moment? It's both a compliment to yourselves
that you have helped created venues and
atmospheres so damn good that the majority are
fighting to get in with the minority but also has led
to some very kinky and eye opening moments. Oh
how I would love to spill right now but alas that
kind of gossip is not permitted in a well respected
publication (Oh yes it is! – Let it all hang out next
month. Ed.) such as this but I’m sure you can use
your imagination! And no wonder I leave my own
man at home tied to the mop and broom for safe
keeping!
Winding up ladies and gents, I’m awfully tired
and have an appointment at the salon to make
myself look human and fit for public consumption
once more. Hope you all have muchos fun and roll
on Glasgow Pride (Sat 17th Jul) because we are
bringing it back bigger and better this year baby!
But please could the gentleman with the terrifying
Parrot (yes parrot) leave it at home this time! I had
night terrors for months! Take the hint, bugger off
x
