Honors Paul Montrone ‘62<br />
Paul Mo n t rone is a man <strong>of</strong> gre a t<br />
accomplishment who is equally blessed<br />
with many great friendships. T h e<br />
Un i versity <strong>of</strong> <strong>Scranton</strong> Pre s i d e n t’s Bu s i n e s s<br />
Council dinner honoring him raised one<br />
million dollars, proceeds <strong>of</strong> which will<br />
help fund Presidential Scholarships for talented<br />
students at the Un i ve r s i t y.<br />
In addition to the 500 guests in attendance,<br />
former President Bill Clinton, U.S.<br />
Senators Ed w a rd Kennedy and Jo h n<br />
Sununu, and opera star Be verly Sills joined<br />
business leaders from throughout the<br />
world in a video tribute to Mr. Mo n t ro n e .<br />
Mr. Montrone was awarded the<br />
President’s Medal at the black tie event,<br />
which was held at <strong>The</strong> Pierre in<br />
Manhattan in early October. <strong>The</strong><br />
President’s Business Council awards the<br />
President’s Medal to recognize individuals<br />
who have achieved excellence in their<br />
fields and who have demonstrated<br />
extraordinary compassion for others.<br />
Mr. Montrone was the second to<br />
receive this honor. At last year’s inaugural<br />
dinner, the first President’s Medal was<br />
awarded to <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Scranton</strong> alumnus<br />
Gerard R. Roche, Senior Chairman<br />
<strong>of</strong> the international search firm Heidrick<br />
and Struggles, Inc.<br />

Council Meets in Washington<br />
Mo re than 130 Un i versity <strong>of</strong> <strong>Scranton</strong><br />
alumni, parents and friends attended a<br />
c e l e b r a t o ry dinner in the nation’s Capitol<br />
on June 3. <strong>The</strong> event was planned and<br />
p resented by the newly formed Pre s i d e n t’s<br />
Council <strong>of</strong> Wa s h i n g t o n .<br />

<strong>The</strong> Pre s i d e n t’s Business Council was<br />
formed nearly three years ago by a pro m i n e n t<br />
g roup <strong>of</strong> metropolitan New Yo rk-based alumni.<br />
<strong>The</strong> council is chaired by Un i versity <strong>of</strong><br />
<strong>Scranton</strong> alumnus Christopher M. “Kip”<br />
C o n d ron, President and Chief Exe c u t i ve<br />
Of f i c e r, AXA Financial, In c .<br />
A 1962 magna cum laude graduate <strong>of</strong> the<br />
Un i ve r s i t y, Mr. Mo n t rone is the chairman<br />
and CEO <strong>of</strong> Fisher Scientific In t e r n a t i o n a l ,<br />
Inc., a world leader in supplying a bro a d<br />
range <strong>of</strong> products and services to re s e a rc h ,<br />
testing and clinical laboratories.<br />
Under Mr. Montrone’s leadership,<br />
Fisher Scientific has grown from a North<br />
American manufacturer and distributor<br />
into a global enterprise serving approximately<br />
145 countries on six continents.<br />
M r. Mo n t rone is also chairman <strong>of</strong> Latona<br />
Associates, a private management and inve s t-<br />
ment company.<br />
During the Clinton administration,<br />
Mr. Montrone served as a member <strong>of</strong><br />
the President’s Advisory Commission on<br />
Consumer Protection and Quality in the<br />
Health Care Industry, as well as a founder<br />
<strong>of</strong> the National Forum for Health Care<br />
Quality Measurement and Reporting.<br />
