DiT Working Party Part Time Employment – Is this really possible for junior doctors? With the move to graduate entry programs at various medical schools, there are more Doctors in Training (DiTs) who are seeking to be engaged on a part-time basis due to family commitments or even just seeking to establish a better worklife balance. Whilst WA Health has Family Friendly and Work- Life Balance policies in place, it is the application of these policies by the health services that is more problematic. The AMA (WA) has increasingly been receiving enquiries from DiTs regarding the ongoing difficulties in obtaining part–time employment. Over the last couple of years it has been obvious, despite WA Health’s policy, resident and registrar positions are not advertised as part-time and when attempts by two junior doctors were made to be employed as a part-time practitioner against a full-time position, applicants have met with concrete walls, even when two doctors have applied as a ready-made job-share. A number of doctors have had to resort to taking the matter to the Public Sector Standards Commission or Equal Opportunity Commission to at least get a trial of a job-share arrangement established. Essentially a NATO situation – No Action, Talk Only! The issues are further exacerbated when looking at relevant training programs and identifying which colleges will enable their programs to be completed on a part-time basis, and how this can be implemented within WA Health. The DiT Committee has determined that this issue needs to be further investigated and remedies established. As a result, a Working Party has been formed to examine the issues and identify where changes are required, and what positions need to be advocated with which bodies. If changes are required to the Industrial Agreement, then we have the opportunity to identify those changes now in preparation for the next round of negotiations, which will commence in early 2013. If you have experienced difficulties in accessing part-time employment and have identified potential solutions, or you have some thoughts regarding this issue, then the Working Party would greatly appreciate receiving your feedback.
