today’s consumers and future generations.
To secure robust marine and freshwater
To commit sufficient resources to support other
stakeholders (governments; eNGO’s) in
delivering the vision

Our Commitments
Cooperation
Work to eliminate IUU
Fully traceable fish products
Support independent standards
Continuous improvement in fisheries and fish farming
Use fact based information sources
Minimise waste and discarding at sea
Engage in Fishery Improvement Projects

• M&S have had a sustainable sourcing policy for over a
decade
• Plan A – 100 point eco plan, 5 years
#58 – all wild fish, fresh and processed, is MSC certified
or equivalent (now 16.8)
#16.1- all M&S farmed fish and feed to come from the
most sustainable sources available by 2015

WWF-M&S Seafood Charter
• WWF Seafood Charter – January 2010
• Year 1 – supply chain analysis
- Implementation of Fishery Improvement
Plans
• Year 2 - progression through the stepwise
approach to sustainable seafood – transparency and
reform

WWF/Industry Alliance
• M&S were the first UK retailer to support WWF’s
Industry Alliance for a shared vision in a bid to drive
CFP reform
“Our business plan is dependent upon sustainable fish
stocks and a marine environment capable of
supporting these. It is for this reason that we are
keen to help deliver a strong a reform as possible.”
Richard Luney, M&S

Applying Our Learning Globally
• Finding a common voice between Industry and NGO’s
is a powerful tool to motivate political will
• Our combined influence is huge and effective
• Education is critical to understand the issues properly
and our arguments must be based on science
• We are looking for potential global alliances within our
own industry and with those who represent our
suppliers and customers
• Cooperation between competitors and NGO’s really
works

opportunity in every difficulty. !!
