Project Title: 2006 Entomology <strong>Research</strong> and Extension<br />
Program<br />
Project Investig<strong>at</strong>or: M.O. Way<br />
Amount: $56,987<br />
Objective: To provide research and extension expertise to<br />
develop and implement integr<strong>at</strong>ed pest management (IPM)<br />
programs for the array of insects <strong>at</strong>tacking rice. Specifically,<br />
the project will (1) evalu<strong>at</strong>e novel insecticides, including<br />
seed tre<strong>at</strong>ments, for control of rice w<strong>at</strong>er weevil and rice<br />
stink bug; (2) determine planting d<strong>at</strong>e influences (including<br />
economic analyses) on rice w<strong>at</strong>er weevil and stalk borer<br />
popul<strong>at</strong>ions and damage; (3) evalu<strong>at</strong>e insecticides for best<br />
timing for stalk borer control; (4) begin revising economic<br />
injury levels for rice stink bug; (5) evalu<strong>at</strong>e residual activity<br />
of selected insecticides tank-mixed with selected oils for<br />
rice stink bug control; (6) monitor the movement of the<br />
Mexican rice borer; (7) begin determining economic thresholds<br />
for stalk borers; and (8) cooper<strong>at</strong>e with the rice industry<br />
and regul<strong>at</strong>ory agencies to register insecticides beneficial to<br />
<strong>Texas</strong> rice farmers and the environment.<br />
Project Title: Communic<strong>at</strong>ions, Press and Outreach for the<br />
<strong>Texas</strong> Rice Industry<br />
Project Investig<strong>at</strong>or: Jaynen Cockrell<br />
Amount: $8,660<br />
Objective: (1) Continue to publish and upgrade <strong>Texas</strong> Rice,<br />
the newsletter for the <strong>Texas</strong> rice industry. (2) Work with<br />
media contacts (newspaper, television and radio) to get<br />
better coverage about events <strong>at</strong> the <strong>Center</strong> and to highlight<br />
the valuable role of rice production in <strong>Texas</strong>. (3) Refine and<br />
expand educ<strong>at</strong>ional m<strong>at</strong>erials for present<strong>at</strong>ions and projects<br />
dealing with rice production.<br />
Project Title: Educ<strong>at</strong>ional Public<strong>at</strong>ions for <strong>Texas</strong> Rice<br />
Producers<br />
Project Investig<strong>at</strong>or: Dale Fritz<br />
Amount: $3,575<br />
Objective: (1) Provide educ<strong>at</strong>ional inform<strong>at</strong>ion in support<br />
of the <strong>Texas</strong> rice industry. (2) Serve as a delivery method<br />
for dissemin<strong>at</strong>ing new technology and upd<strong>at</strong>e inform<strong>at</strong>ion<br />
to rice producers. (3) Provide the l<strong>at</strong>est rice production,<br />
management, and environmental inform<strong>at</strong>ion to producers<br />
and rel<strong>at</strong>ed agribusiness personnel.<br />
Project Title: <strong>Texas</strong> Rice Crop Survey—2006<br />
Project Investig<strong>at</strong>or: James Stansel<br />
Amount: $16,000<br />
Objective: (1) Develop st<strong>at</strong>istics for rice production to<br />
include: county acres by variety, <strong>Texas</strong> yields, <strong>Texas</strong> production,<br />
estim<strong>at</strong>es of carryover stocks and variety performance<br />
d<strong>at</strong>a for use by the rice industry. (2) Conduct crop<br />
development surveys throughout the growing season for<br />
use in alerts and crop management. (3) Conduct farmers’<br />
fields DD50 crop development predictions for farmer management<br />
inputs. (4) Expand and simplify the crop survey<br />
and reporting system. (5) Continue development of rice belt<br />
w<strong>at</strong>er planning for rice production.<br />
Project Title: Personnel Support <strong>at</strong> Eagle Lake St<strong>at</strong>ion<br />
Project Investig<strong>at</strong>or: Eagle Lake St<strong>at</strong>ion<br />
Amount: $60,000<br />
Objective: To support two positions th<strong>at</strong> would oversee<br />
Farm Services activities <strong>at</strong> the Eagle Lake <strong>Center</strong>.
