La vida con Cristina
Do you ever have really weird
dreams?
By Cristina Blackwell
cblackwell@laprensasa.com
I’ve been dreaming a lot lately.
It’s come to the point where I wake
up confused, curious and completely
overwhelmed. I don’t think
I need professional help in figuring
out the source –it’s usually that
salami sandwich or entire bowl of
mint chocolate chip ice cream I ate
right before going to bed.
Recurring dreams, on the other
hand, demand more of my attention
–often because they’re scary.
Perhaps it’s because creepy dreams
are more memorable –a more effective
way for your subconscious
to get your attention. Events and
emotions in your waking life trigger
your dreams. If you repeatedly have
the same dream, your subconscious
is trying to send you a message.
Check out the top eight reoccurring
dreams and see if you can
decipher yours.
1. Trapped. Have you ever had a
dream that you’re locked in a room,
trapped in a mine, or buried alive in a
box? If so, then there’s some aspect
of your waking life that makes you
feel trapped or claustrophobic. Did
you make the wrong career choice?
Are you in debt?
2. Restroom, please! I’ll admit I
have this dream a lot. I search for a
bathroom but when I get there the
toilets are either broken or missing
completely. According to Dream-
Moods.com, “to dream that you’re
in a public restroom with no stalls
signifies your frustrations about
getting enough privacy.”
3. Drowning. You’re probably
overwhelmed by something in
your life. TheCuriousDreamer.com
agrees with me. “Overwhelming
circumstances in real life, feelings
of helplessness or hopelessness, or
something feeling out of control.” It
also explains that “one huge wave
could represent a challenge in your
life” and a flood might represent
“feeling like things are out of control
in your life.”
4. Where’d my teeth go? You
feel something rolling around in
your mouth and spit it out, only to
discover it’s one of your own teeth.
Or, you look in the mirror and your
teeth are all missing. DreamsDictionary.org
says “you’re having
difficulties related to self esteem and
speaking your mind.”
5. Lost or unprepared. Dreaming
that you’re late for something
represents your fear of change and
your anxiety about seizing an opportunity.
You may feel unready or
unworthy in your current circumstances
or conflicted over decisions
about your future. Dreams about
being at school often mean you’re
feeling insecure about your social
status or your performance in a
situation.”
6. Naked. If you have recurring
dreams that you’re naked in
public, you’re probably afraid to be
exposed. Is there something you’re
hiding? Apparently when you’re
naked in a dream you’re revealing
the real you.
7. Falling. According to Curious-
Dreamer.com these dreams signify
a loss of control as well as “a lack
of foundation in your life or fear of
abandonment, especially by a ‘caretaker’
such as a partner, employer,
or God.”
8. Chased. My superior interpretation
skills tell me that if you
dream you’re being chased, you’re
probably trying to get away from
something. According to Dream.
net.au, “you’re running away from
or trying to hide from something you
need to face.” It could be “a feeling
you’re avoiding, a conflict you don’t
want to handle or a difficult memory
you would rather forget.” But wait,
let’s end this list on a positive note:
According to the same website, you
might actually be running away
from something good “like a talent
you’re not acknowledging or
a feeling of love you’re not ready
to admit.”
By Dennis M. Ayotte Jr.
dennisayottejr@gmail.com
According to a couple of my
friends “All the cool people do it.”
Lately, they’ve been adamant that I
join the world of online dating and
reap its many benefits. Unfortunately,
I consider it the “sale rack”
of dating and shopping the sale racks
for women is not my style.
My friends insist I’m crazy and
think my “sale rack” theory is absurd.
Yet, I remind them that I’ve
seen the crop of online girls they
bring around, and that they’re barely
batting above the Mendoza line as
far as quality goes. I’ve seen them
fall for girls with profile pictures
that were taken circa 2003 and
lame “About me” sections claiming
they’re athletic, fun, and outgoing
only to find out they have six cats
and live at home with their mom.
Don’t get me wrong they’ve
brought around a couple of (potential)
keepers. My fear is what may
come from joining the online world;
What others may think? What kind
of girls will I meet? What if I actually
meet an awesome girl I like?
Will I be the guy who meets the
psycho stalker girl? The list goes on.
Normally I’m one for change and
down to try new things. In this case,
the whole online dating thing is too
weird and when it comes to a quirky
‘bio’, a list of boring interests and
outdated profile pictures—I’ll pass.
It takes me back to the days when
I went to an actual gym for the first
time and saw the countless workout
machines designed to tone muscles
I never knew existed. I was intimidated
by most of them but more
embarrassed by what others were
thinking after watching me stand in
front of an unfamiliar machine for
minutes puzzled at how to use it,
let alone figuring out what muscles
it targeted.
3-E
All the cool people do it
The motto I’ve adopted is “Who
cares what others think” (in the gym
at least). After the hours I’ve put
in at the gym one thing I’ve found
from talking to others is that we all
struggle with similar issues. With all
the new technology it’s hard to keep
up with all the newest workout techniques,
cardio classes and machines
available. Don’t be afraid to try out
the new machine in the gym you’ve
been staring at the past two weeks
or the intense looking cardio class
with the name you can’t pronounce.
Trying new things can be daunting
because you’re stepping out of
your comfort zone but find peace
in that there are 10 other people in
the gym that feel the same way. No
one is perfect and few people know
what every piece of machinery and
cardio class does for you (they’re
usual called personal trainers).
Explore everything your gym has
to offer. If you get bored take your
work out to the outdoors and try new
things like tennis, swimming, biking
or something that you’ve maybe
never tried. Change is good. It keeps
your workouts fun and works out
muscles you usually wouldn’t. Trust
me; all the cool people are doing it.

Picks of the Week
“Clash of the Titans” (PG-13)
What a glorious hot mess of
a movie this is. Based on the
equally hotmess stop-motion
Ray Harryhausen epic of the
1980s, “Clash of the Titans” is
a lot like “300” — lots of buff
boys shouting and killin’ stuff
— and should be enjoyed in the
same vein. The film stars Sam
Worthington, that untalented
hunk o’ meat from “Avatar,”
as Perseus, a guy who doesn’t
know that his daddy is Liam
Neeson (aka the “Release the
Kraken” guy). Perseus goes on
a quest to kill stuff: giant scorpions,
the Medusa, witches, etc.
before Liam Neeson’s brother
Hades (Ralph Fiennes, who still
insists “Ralph” be pronounced
RAFE) destroys a port. Or
something. It doesn’t matter.
All you need to do is watch
stuff get busted up real good,
listen to the shouting and keep
shoveling down the popcorn and
pizza rolls.
“Repo Men” (R)
Speaking of hot messes, this
futuristic gorefest starring Forest
Whitaker and Jude Law
about two guys who repossess
body parts from people
What
would life
be if we
had no
courage
to attempt
anything?
Sam Worthington
who can’t make the payments
could’ve been a darkly funny
satire, but instead settles on the
Lotsa Blood Equals Entertainment
route. If you’re a fan of the
“Saw” or “Hostel” films, you’ll
probably like this movie, but
everyone else should stay away.
“FIFA World Cup DVD Collection:
1930-2006” (Unrated)
Spanning 15 discs, this boxed
set is definitely a must-have for
the hardcore soccer fan. And
that soccer fan’s name is Ernie
Bushmiller of Ft. Lee, N.J. Oh, I
kid. I kid. There’s gotta be more
than one American who’s so into
soccer that they’ll shell out 90
bucks for what is essentially a
24-hour highlight reel of every
goal scored in the World Cup final.
Also included in the collection
are 15 mini-documentaries
on the world’s greatest players
(Pele and ... 14 other guys
you’ve probably never heard
of). WHOOOOO!!! SOCCER
Grab The Popcorn!
By Luis Muñoz
grabthepopcorn@hotmail.com
Movie: “Inception”
Rating: PG-13 (violence / action)
Studio: Warner Bros. Pictures
Where I Saw It: Santikos Theater
Don’t buy the large soda! If
you miss a second of this movie
by going to the bathroom, you’ll
be completely lost and you will
regret it. “Inception” is the kind
of movie that will keep you engaged
and on the edge of your
seat the entire time.
It’s one of the few movies
classified under “mystery” that
really deserves it. It’s dramatic,
suspenseful, visually-attractive,
and will keep you guessing until
the end. Even better still, it’s
directed by the super-talented
Christopher Nolan of “Memento”
and “The Dark Knight”
fame.
I’ve been telling people that
I believe Leonardo DiCaprio is
actually becoming a better actor
as he gets older. In this latest
movie, I think Leo has finally
truly comes into his own in a
role that’s tailor-made for him.
DiCaprio stars as Dom Cobb,
a thief with the extremely unusual
ability to steal, or extract,
secrets from people while they
sleep. His chosen profession
has, not only, made him sought
after by large corporations but
also by law enforcement.
Now, a desperate fugitive,
he is offered one last chance
at redemption and possibly the
only way he will ever see his
children again. Enter Saito,
played by Ken Watanabe (“The
Last Samurai”), a powerful man
who brings Cobb the challenge
of his life. This time, he doesn’t
want him to extract a secret
from someone; he wants Cobb
to place an idea into someone’s
mind.
What follows is a masterpiece
that opens your mind to questions
about the mysteries of
the mind.
I’m not going to lie; I loved
everything about this flick. It’s
a movie that’s not “dumbeddown”
as most sci-fi movies
usually are for the audience.
It’s a smart film for real movie
fanatics. Not to mention, the
incredible cast that includes,
Joseph Gordon-Levitt (“G.I.
Joe: The Rise of Cobra”, “Stop-
Loss”), Ellen Page (“Juno”),
and the screen legend, Michael
Cain (you should know who
he is).
All I can tell you is this: If
you’re a fan of mystery and
suspense, this film will rock
your world. Imagine “Matrix”
with a better cast and a better
plot. It’s definitely one I will
buy the DVD to and a movie
that will have you talking about
it on the way home.
So, is it good? Watch it and
you decide!
Luis Muñoz is currently an
“Salt” rebasa las expectativas
de películas de acción
Por Martín del Palacio
Tan capaz de saltar de un camión
en movimiento a otro como de
expresar los sentimientos más
profundos frente a una cámara,
Angelina Jolie no se sorprendió
cuando un viejo conocido, el director
Phillip Noyce, con quien había
trabajado en “The Bone Collector”
los ojos de Noyce, el papel podía
funcionar maravillosamente bien
para Jolie cambiándolo de hombre
a mujer.
diferente a James, y me gusta
Patricia Garza
Martha Tijerina, o “Marthita”,
como le dicen con cariño y
respeto sus compañeros, inició
su carrera en la televisión en
español en San Antonio en el
año 1970 en el Canal 41. Bajo la
dirección de Don Emilio Nicolás
ocupó el puesto de Directora de
Relaciones con la Comunidad.
Sin duda alguna su labor fue
muy significativa, hasta el día
de hoy la relación del canal con
los televidentes de habla hispana
se ha mantenido de manera muy
cercana.
Su gran inquietud y talento
la llevaron a establecer un
programa en vivo, el cual se
transmitía de lunes a viernes y
se titulaba “En San Antonio”,
en el que se trataban temas de
interés para la comunidad. La realización
del programa se hacía
con frecuencia desde el lugar
de los hechos, característica
que mantenía un contacto más
directo con la comunidad.
La necesidad de aprender más
acerca del medio de la televisión
llevó a Martha a desempeñarse
en diferentes tareas, realizó reportajes
actividad que le permitiera explorar
nuevas facetas del medio
televisivo.
Para Marthita el trabajo que
realizó dentro de la televisión
fue muy satisfactorio, sin embargo
ella siente un orgullo
muy especial porque fue una
de las fundadoras del Teletón
Navideño, el cual se creó con
el propósito de recaudar fondos
para las personas necesitadas de
San Antonio.
Según se tiene conocimiento,
el entonces Arzobispo de San
Antonio, Patricio F. Flores, fue
al canal a solicitarle la ayuda de
Don Emilio Nicolás para que por
medio de la televisión se hiciera
una petición de donativos para
las personas necesitadas. Don
humana. El más reciente fue el
máximo reconocimiento de la
Asociación de Periodistas Hispanos
de San Antonio-SAAHJ,
el Lifetime Achievement Award
for Exellence in Journalism,
cual le fue otorgado el jueves
ante cientos de sus amigos y
colegas. Durante el discurso de
aceptación, Marthita dedicó su
premio de excelencia a todos
Local chef to appear in “Hell’s Kitchen”
By Cristina Blackwell
cblackwell@laprensasa.com
Most young bachelors aren’t
known for their cooking abilities,
but celebrity chef Gordon Ramsay
does his best to change that for San
Antonio reality TV veteran Christopher
Mendoza on the “Hell’s
Kitchen” episode airing next week.
Mendoza auditioned for the
show with one goal in mind-to
learn how to cook. “Honestly, I
don’t know how to cook, that’s the
truth of the matter,” he confessed.
“And I don’t want to depend on
a girl to cook for me! I want to
do more than just order pizza and
prepare frozen meals.”
In the episode, the professional
culinary artists are challenged to
verbally instruct and guide the
bachelors to prepare a delectable
dish. This may seem like a fairly
easy task, but the bachelors aren’t
comfortable in the kitchen and
find themselves overwhelmed
by the professional tools of the
trade. To add to the challenge, the
San Antonio native Christopher
Mendoza will make an appearance
on the reality TV hit,
“Hell’s Kitchen” featuring foulmouthed
celebrity chef Gordon
Ramsay. (Courtesy photo)
professional chefs are not allowed
to physically interfere with the
bachelor’s preparations.
“Being on ‘Hell’s Kitchen’ was
a great opportunity to pick up
some prime, professional culinary
advice that will hopefully come
in handy when entertaining family
and friends,” said Mendoza, a
John Marshall High School and a
University of Texas at San Antonio
graduate.
However, Mendoza admitted
that despite filming the show, his
cooking skills remain the same.
“I think I would’ve had to stay on
a whole season or actually take
classes for a while,” he said. “My
mom is a natural cook; my dad is
a natural cook –and I’m definitely
not a natural cook! To me it’s a
whole different language.”
While Mendoza is currently
living in Los Angeles, he returns
to San Antonio whenever he can
to spend time with family and
friends. “I will never forget where
I came from. I came to L.A. to find
work and to find love,” he writes
on his website.
“Part of my mission is to represent
San Antonio proudly and
to show our community that it is
possible to move to L.A. without
guarantees and establish connections
on your own,” he continued.
“Never let go of hope. One day you
will see that it all has finally come
together, hope is not a dream but
a way of making dreams become
a reality.”
This is not the first time this local
actor/model/writer has been on
national television. Mendoza used
to be on the A&E home-makeover
show “Flip This House” as an
intern. He was most recently one
of the contestants on Fox Reality
Channel’s “Seducing Cindy,” a
show where 24 suitors vied for
model/actress/Internet sensation
Cindy Margolis’ attention in their
search for love. Mendoza was one
of the final six in the competition.
The season premiered on June
1 and Mendoza’s episode is airing
on Tuesday, July 27 at 8 p.m. on
KABB. Now in its seventh, the
FOX show “Hell’s Kitchen” showcases
professional culinary artists
who try each week to impress
superstar chef Ramsay through a
series of cooking competitions.
The show’s format is about same
and, like previous seasons, the culinary
contestant will have to live
together and work together under
the watchful eye of foul-mouthed
chef Gordon Ramsey.
Afraid you’ll miss the show?
Grammy award-winning Latin
jazz bandleader and percussionist
Henry Brun will mark 20 years
making music with his band, The
Latin Playerz. The kick-off concert
to a tour that spans the globe is
happening right here in San Antonio,
at a benefit concert Aug. 14,
at the Charline McCombs Empire
Theatre.
San Antonio’s music ambassador
will return for a special
presentation during JazzSA’live,
followed by headliner performances
at the 50th Annual Texas
Jazz Festival and the 4th Annual
House of Jazz after a brief stint
in Puerto Rico. In October, Henry
Brun & the Latin Playerz will represent
San Antonio at the Taichung
Jazz Festival in Taiwan, followed
by performances in Kaohsiung,
and Tai Pei.
Brun, 50, is quick to point out
the band’s name has nothing to do
with being a ‘player.’ “‘Playerz’
with a ‘z’ refers to the fact that
these musicians, the players, play
jazz!” he told La Prensa.
The percussion maestro actually
started out as a child prodigy,
turning pro at the tender age of 11
in Ponce, Puerto Rico. Born and
raised in the Bronx, New York
until he was 8 years old, his mother
recognized a strong predilection
for music and insisted he take
piano lessons when he turned 6
years old. Later, when they moved
to Ponce in Puerto Rico, Brun
discovered the bongo and fell in
love. To this day, the bongo is his
favorite percussion instrument.
“The bongo is melodic, it carries
on a conversation,” Brun said. “It’s
the instrument that dances around
– it sings, it’s playful, it’s the happiest
instrument of all.”
Brun, affectionately known
as “Mr. Ritmo,” credits Willie
Valentine as the one who laid the
foundation on which he built his
career. “He made me,” Brun said.
The curious story of the intersection
of Brun and Valentine’s life is
the stuff of literary classics. Valentine
popped “out of nowhere”
into Brun’s life one fateful summer,
asking if he really wanted to
learn the craft of drumming. Just
11, Brun was enthralled, and they
spent 6 to 8 hours a day together,
mentor and pupil, for months.
One day, a band invited Willie
to fill in for a gig in Juana Diaz,
known also as “la ciudad de los
poetas.” He took Brun along to
play and the young musician even
accomplished his first solo, which
led to more gigs. Brun never saw
Valentine again after that night,
but remembers catching his tutor’s
eye during the performance and
getting the feeling that Valentine
was satisfied with what he saw
and had completed his mission.
Valentine disappeared, dropping
out of Brun’s life as mysteriously
as he had entered it.
“Now, I know he wasn’t a figment
of my imagination, because
everybody still knows him in the
neighborhood, but I never could
find him again – and believe me, I
tried,” Brun said.
Mystified but undeterred, Brun
continued to seek out formal music
training and studied at the Juan
Morel Campos Escuela Libre De
Música in Ponce, studying under
the tutelage of Moisés Ortiz and
Rafael Montero. As a young teenager,
he had the chance to play
with Danny Cruz, a very popular
Latin Pop group in Puerto Rico,
which led to more opportunities
performing with several nationally
recognized groups.
Still a teenager, in ‘79, Brun
joined the United States Air Force
and was instantly recruited to the
prestigious Air Force Band. The
opportunity to travel worldwide
broadened his horizons and exposed
him to ethnic rhythms.
He even enjoyed the honor of
performing with luminaries such
as the legendary trumpet player
Maynard Ferguson, Bob Hope,
Lucille Ball, Barbara Mandrell and
others. After more than a decade
of service, Brun decided to pursue
music as a full-time career. His
military connections brought him
to San Antonio, which has been his
center for the last 30 years.
“Over the past 30 years in San
Antonio, I have had the chance to
be part of the best feel-good concerts,”
Brun told La Prensa.
There’s no question Brun is all
about the music, and his passion
is secondary only to his success in
the business. “I play what people
want to hear,” he said smiling, “a
mi manera – San Antonio music
with a side order of arroz con
gandules.”
When performing with his ensemble,
the Latin Playerz, the
music covers a cavalcade of Latin
styles, ranging from the slow
tempo of a Cuban cha-cha and the
more upbeat mambo, to the conga
and rumba, guanguancó, songo,
charanga, son montuno, timba and
merengue rhythms. His wife, Judi
Deleon, a lyricist and arranger, is
the star vocalist of the band, and
her velvety tones and incredible
sounds bring a delectable dimension
to the music. The band integrates
rhythm and blues, swing,
salsa and straight ahead Jazz with
a Latin beat that incorporates Afro-
Cuban influences in performances
throughout the USA and abroad.
“All I did was awaken the desire to
hear this music again,” Brun said.
Community service is a big
part of Brun’s life. He purposefully
gives back to his adopted
city as much as he has received in
all kinds of ways. He brings star
power to San Antonio in the form
of Tito Puente, Willie Colon and
Eddie Palmieri. He is a strong education
advocate and integral part
of the Texas Music Project, a program
developed to strengthen and
restore rigorous music education
in Texas schools and raise awareness
about the positive impact music
education has on students, and
to promote Texas music. Brun and
his band also actively participate in
the Texas Commission on the Arts
Touring Program.
Brun is devoted to the development
of future musical talent, and
he is equally dedicated to ensuring
fair treatment of Hispanic musicians
and education for underprivileged
children. He spearheaded
the Children’s Symposium that
takes place during San Antonio’s
annual Jazz’SAlive Jazz festival,
which brings clinicians of various
disciplines to free workshops for
children, exposing them to the
sounds that create Jazz percussion,
high brass, woodwinds and
vocals. Children can experience
and participate in the creation of
these sounds, opening a world of
possibilities by participating in the
program created and sponsored
by Brun and Deleon’s nonprofit,
the STARLITE Organization for
the Arts.
The musician also works hard to
keep the city in tune and in touch
with his weekly radio programs at
Trinity University’s KRTU 91.7
FM and Texas Public Radio (NPR)
89.1 FM. He uses the chance to
turn the audience on to Salsa and
Latin Jazz while nurturing the
cultural Afro-Caribbean element
existent in the city and educating
the locals on the richness and
legacy of this infectious music.
The Sunday show at KRTU is a
San Antonio staple and a tradition
for San Antonio listeners.
Brun plays active roles in city
planning, too, as a member of the
Cultural Advisory Board for the
Office of Cultural Affairs of the
City of San Antonio and a Commission
for the Convention and
Visitors Bureau. Both roles allow
him to be part of the team, which
is essential to the existence of cultural
arts organizations throughout
debido a diferentes situaciones
“Me da gusto ver gente joven[y]
me mandaron treinta”.
“Me gusta mucho
como canta ese chico”, dijo.
Los que conocemos la trayectoria
de la cantante, recordamos su paso
por las telenovelas y deseamos que
algún día la “Leona Dormida” se deje
ver en la pantalla chica.
“No descarto la idea pero no en
este momento, estoy ocupada con mi
música y con mis conciertos y estoy
feliz con eso”, expresó.
Antes de concluir no podía faltar
el comentario de su etapa como
abuelita, “Soy una abuelita consentidora,
yo los consiento y ellos [los
padres] los educan”.
Actualmente Lupita se encuentra
de gira por varias ciudades, esperemos
que cada uno de estos shows
By Stephanie De Luna and
Brianna Dimas
Lace tops, big bows, leather,
rhinestones and gloves. These style
elements helped define Madonna’s
career in the 80s, now they’re making
a comeback!
The 51-year-old international
music and style icon is teaming up
with her 13-year-old daughter, Lola,
and bringing a hip fashion line for
juniors to Macy’s- just in time for
back-to-school shopping!
“‘Material Girl’ is all about prints
and embellishments in the newest
silhouettes. She mixes hard and
soft elements, like a tutu dress and
studded combat boots, or an oversized
boyfriend sweatshirt with a
floral print mini skirt. It’s all about
self-expression and playing with
layering,” Martha Gil de Montes,
Macy’s Media Relations Manager
told La Prensa.
The line will launch exclusively
in 200 Macy’s stores and online at
www.macys.com on August 3.
“The “Material Girl” is a spontaneous
and fearless individual who
invents her own fashion trends and
is never afraid to make a bold, creative
statement. She is influenced by
her eclectic taste in music, dance and
Hollywood,” added Gil de Montes.
The best thing about “Material
Girl?” is that it’s affordable! The
apparel, footwear, handbags and
jewelry featured in the collection
cost between $12 and $40.
Other exclusive brands at Macy’s
which are popular for kids and teens
include Slade Wilder for young
men, American Rag and the Maddens,
American Rag Plus, Kouture
by Kimora and more great fashions
from the Jessica Simpson collection.
Gil de Montes explained that the
hottest juniors trends include a mix
of masculine and feminine looks as
well as folk and native designs.
One new trend is “Boy Meets
Girl,” which includes lots of mixand-match
layering of garments
with sharp contrasting patterns and
colors. “Layering of multiple elements
in varying fabrications and
textures is crucial, while rich fall
colorations of burnt ochre, chestnut
brown, deep purple and midnight
blue take center stage in this backto-school
trend,” said Gil de Montes.
Another new style is the “Tough
and Tender” look, which is taking
over the young contemporary area
as it includes girly clothes as well
as tough vintage attire. You can also
bring outdoorsy and utility apparel
into this trend and dress it up with
gentle colors and accessories.
“This look offers both soft and
feminine elements paired with
strong tailored pieces, instilling
a vintage-inspired mood through
the use of texture and tones of
dusty pink, slate blue, ash grey and
mustard yellow,” explained Gil de
Montes.
Also, according to Gil de Montes,
fleece is back!
“We do see a higher demand for
fleece. No longer just for activewear,
soft fleece fabrications give way
to strong structured jackets and
feminine tops this fall,” added Gil
de Montes.
She explained that the fleece
look includes elements of lace,
girly bows and mesh, which make
the style light, fresh and effortless.
Hues of heathered grey, soft cream,
asphalt and pale nude are the ideal
colorations to ease into the season
with this trend.
This season, the most important
staple for both boys and girls is
denim. Embellished, distressed
or “jeggings,” (leggings made of
denim) are extremely popular.
Screen tees, hoodies and skinny
jeans are what boys want for the
back-to-school season. Layering
pieces and mixing and matching of
The original “Material Girl” and
her daughter, Lola, are teaming
up to launch their new line
exclusively in 200 Macy’s stores
and online at www.macys.com
on August 3. (Courtesy photo)
prints and styles will keep him cool
as the long school days and countless
homework assignments begin.

Local comedy workshop brings chuckles to S.A.
By Roxanne Macias
rmacias@laprensasa.com
It isn’t easy to take the stage and
do stand-up comedy. Established
comics like George Lopez, Jerry
Seinfeld, Gabriel Iglesias, Dave
Chappelle, Kathy Griffin, and
many more have mastered the art
of stand-up comedy. Comedian
and professor at East LA College
and community volunteer Bobby
Chavez “Chorrizo Lopez” visited
Teen Services at Central Library
on Monday to conduct a comedy
workshop for teens.
To kickoff the workshop,
Chorrizo gave a brief introduction
of the history of comedy and explained
the difference between comedic
terms. Aside from teaching
basic terms, Chorrizo explained
how to be a host and introduce
acts on stage.
At first the audience of teenagers,
families and library personnel
were a bit shy, but after a few
laughs they loosened up and were
ready to join in on the fun.
During the comedy workshop
teens participated in activities
such as turning jokes into comedy
Workshop participants looking for jokes.
routines, learning emcee technique
and overcoming shyness.
Comedy isn’t for the easily discouraged.
Chorrizo explains that if
you don’t get a laugh right away,
move on to the next joke. There is
no room in stand-up comedy for
long jokes.
“A laugh should be expected
every six to seven seconds, if no
laugh is produced by the audience
then move on to the next joke,
“advised Chorrizo.
After doing a short comedy routine
of his own, audience members
were selected to choose a joke
from the display of books and say
it in front of the crowd. Once the
jokes were selected, Chavez taught
the teens to transform their chosen
knock-knock jokes into stand-up
comedy format.
Participants took quickly to the
skills and starting creating their
own creative stage names such as
Migas and Philadrian.
Chorrizo always had a knack
for comedy since childhood. He
told La Prensa that even when he
was a soldier in the U.S. Army he
was telling jokes. Friends would
tell him jokes and he would write
them down.
Once retiring from the military
in 2001, Chorrizo attended the
University of Texas at San Antonio.
Then he discovered that University
of Texas at Austin offered
a course in stand-up comedy, so he
decided to try it out in 2005.There
he learned how to write comedy
material and how to transform
jokes into stand-up comedy.
As part of his stand-up comedy
class Chorrizo came up with
the character, “Chorrizo Lopez”
(CHO-LO for short). He took the
name Chorrizo from a friend and
decided to use Lopez in reference
to his similar looks to fellow comic,
George Lopez and “Chorrizo
Lopez” was born!
After completing his undergraduate
degree in Austin, Chorrizo
earned his master’s degree at Cal
State. There he began his stand-up
career working at comedy clubs
during his summer breaks. He
quickly made a name for himself.
After speaking with a friend that
worked as a children’s performer,
Chorrizo and his friend came up
with a plan to carry out a comedy
workshop for kids. The workshops
are conducted in libraries and
schools in California, Nevada,
Arizona and Texas.
Some comediennes Chorrizo
looks up to are Rodney Dangerfield,
Eddie Murphy, Paul Rodriguez,
Gabriel Iglesias, George Lopez,
Lucille Ball, Ricky Ricardo,
Bob Hope, Abbott and Costello,
Richard Pryor, Three Stooges and
the Little Rascals.
Chorrizo keeps his comedy
clean even though he does make
jokes about adult subjects such
as marriage divorce and in-laws.
For children, he concentrates on
subjects that kids relate to such as
school, growing up and siblings.
“It’s a new thing to show kids
how to use humor in a positive way
and still be funny, “said Chorrizo.
Texto y fotos
Por Domingo Banda
Muchos han de recordar la
época de los noventa, donde los
grupos pop eran lo máximo para
la industria y para los fanáticos.
Un músico que sobresalió
durante esos años fue Chacho
Gaytan, al que muchos recordamos
como miembro del exitoso
dueto Sentidos Opuestos.
A casi una década que se separara
de su compañera de grupo
Alessandra Rosaldo, el músico
sigue vigente en la industria del
entretenimiento, haciendo cosas
muy diferentes sin alejarse de
la música.
“Vamos a lanzar un disco de
un quinteto de jazz que tenemos,
el proyecto se llama “Manzana”,
hay una sorpresa para el fin de
año, lanzaré un disco instrumental.
Poca gente sabe que toco
jazz, me fascina ese género que
respeto y estudio muchísimo”,
contó de su presente.
Además dijo, “En mi estudio
The minute fans found out that
he and some band members were
hospitalized, they started to pray,
form prayer groups and by the
next evening thousands conducted
candle light vigils in several cities.
“Latin Connection” correspondent
Madeline Lozano, who was
part of the thousands of people at
the Alamodome, vividly recalls
that evening.
“The whole parking lot was
full,” Lozano stated. “There was a
small makeshift stage from where
Jonny Ramírez emceed and Javier
Galván served as lead prayer warrior
as David Lee Garza, Ram
Herrera, Jay Pérez and other
artists gave their heartfelt testimonies
as their voices cracked
with emotion as they described
Emilio as a fighter and asked God
to perform a healing.”
Raulito and Emilio’s sons
choked up on their words as they
spoke, prayed and thanked fans
for showing up.
“People just kept coming up
and not alone, but with their entire
felt like when 9-11 occurred and
everyone united. It was as though
la música de una telenovela para
TV Azteca”.
En la entrevista con Chacho,
platicamos como ha visto el
cambio de la industria desde
que el estaba sobre el escenario
en la década pasada hasta el día
de hoy.
“Definitivamente ha tenido
muchas perdidas la industria,
más de un setenta por ciento.
Los artistas tenemos que seguir
haciendo música, eso es algo a
lo que no podemos renunciar.
Hacemos música como comer
que es algo indispensable, en
lo personal no puedo dejar de
tocar el piano todos los días de
mi vida. No por otra cosa más
que por necesidad, tocar el piano
para mí es como respirar”.
Durante este tiempo Chacho
trabajócomo arreglista y música
para grandes artistas como Belinda
durante su primer gira
“Fiesta en la azotea”, Alejandra
Avalos, y escribe para orquestas
de artistas como Guadalupe
Pineda.
Con su famosa hermana Bibi
Gaytan y su cuñando Eduardo
Capetillo, también ha colaborado.
“Con Bibí y Eduardo
hemos hecho cosas importante
Three days later, Emilio and two
of his sons, Emilio IV and Diego;
plus Raulito and his son Rodrigo
gave Jonny Ramírez of Tejano 107
the exclusivity of the first radio
interview since the accident.
“I miss all you guys and I’m
excited,” were Emilio’s opening
words. “I’m nervous, like a new
kid.”
Ramírez commented on his
fantastic progress then, referring
to the awards show, added, “Leave
it to a Mexican to run onstage.”
“It felt great,” Emilio said of
the impromptu appearance. “I get
nervous a lot, but I thank God.”
“Are you ready to do a full
set? Are you ready to go back on
stage,” Ramírez asked in reference
to his upcoming gig in Poteet.
“I may be there two to three
hours,” Emilio responded. “I just
hope to God to do it all.”
Then Emilio revealed I already
knew, but was not allowed to release
or expose, until now.
“I get lost with the timing, with
the songs. I remember the Dave
Lee tunes better and it’s going to
take time. Sometimes, if I don’t
know a song, I have to make up
the words.”
Asked how he stayed in shape,
Emilio said he was cycling and
running three miles a day. Then
shifting the conversation to Raulito,
he said, “I’m proud of Raulito
and I have to get him back with me
… we miss each other.”
Ramírez then talked about the
time when he heard the first version
of “Bajo De Tu Sombra” and
how happy he was that Raulito
took his advice and also congratulated
him on the tune winning
“Song of the Year.”
“Rather than rush it out, I redid
the whole thing and the award
really goes out to my brother
because he inspired me,” Raulito
said. “And in regard to my brother
being here today, my mom tells me
to give thanks to all the prayers
because that’s what saved Emilio’s
life.”
Last Sunday, Emilio and Raulito
did a 40-minute set during the
fundraiser for the Óscar Montemayor
Family in Poteet, Texas
and Emilio never once glanced
down at the lyrics that were placed
behind the monitor speakers in
case he forgot the lyrics to any
song.
“Sometimes I have to read the
words and I hate doing that. I freak
out,” Emilio said.
One must realize that what took
47 years to learn, he’s trying to
relearn in three years, but it’s as
a KXTN listener e-mailed, “The
Lord has already forgiven you
for the past and you are a great
testimony. Amen.”
Raulito’s fans feel for him
because they fear he may be overshadowed
by the shift in attention
to his older brother. However, they
need not worry because Raulito
is now a star in his own right. So
much so, that he has a long string
of sponsors and has landed his
own television show on the Fox
network, more on that in a future
article.

“SALT”......
trabajan Liev Schreiber y Chiwetel
Ejiofor, Jolie encarna a una agente
de la CIA llamada Evelyn Salt
cuya vida se transforma el día en
que un desertor ruso, interpretado
por el legendario actor polaco
Daniel Olbrychski, se presenta en
la sede central de la agencia para
denunciar un plan para asesinar
al presidente ruso, el que será llevado
a cabo por una doble agente
llamada precisamente Evelyn Salt,
lo cual, lógicamente, desatará una
verdadera cacería en donde la espía
tratará por un lado de eludir por
todos los medios a sus compañeros
de trabajo mientras por el otro intenta
desentrañar la conspiración
que ha afectado a su buen nombre.
Y si bien la idea de agentes
secretos rusos en el siglo XXI
pueda resultar un tanto extraña,
hace solo unos días las autoridades
norteamericanas desbarataron
A veces quiero salir
amorosa.
