Class of 2010 transform into graduates

Years of hard work, shared
triumphs and defeats, great joys
and deep sorrow, culminate in
one moment of absolute victory
for students of the class of 2010
– graduation.
For high school senior Ashley
Marie Saldivar, a student of what
could be one of the last graduating
classes from SAISD’s Burbank
High School, the moment is particularly
nerve-wracking.
Along the walls of her room are
all the special mementos from her
time at Burbank High School: several
mums tacked to walls, photos
of friends and Color Guard team
members displayed on the dresser,
and the prom dress preserved in its
original bag.
Still, Saldivar is delighted to
have reached this significant
threshold – and is ready for the
victorious moment when she
crosses the stage during the Luther
Burbank High School commencement
ceremony at 1 p.m on June
6 at the Alamodome.
“It’s really great that I’m graduating,
but I’m really, really nervous,”
said Saldivar. “I’ve been
suffering from stage fright.”
For Saldivar, reaching this
milestone has been hard work.
Her particular challenge was to
learn to manage class work and
stay involved in school activities.

parades and maintain her grade
point average.
Saldivar said that the hardest
part of senior year was taking the
TAKS test, and the easiest part
of senior year was the class work
itself. However, senior year was
not all hard work, and Saldivar
recalls the fun of homecoming
games, pep rallies, dances and
other once-in-a-lifetime senior
events she shared with her classmates,
as well.
During her time at Burbank,
Saldivar took advanced classes
that will count towards her degree,
which will help ease her
transition to college. She plans
to study at Palo Alto College and
aspires to become a veterinary
assistant.
While many students consider
going away to college, Saldivar
says she plans to stay right here in
her hometown, close to her family.
“My family is very excited and
proud of me,” Saldivar says.
The high school experience is
different for every student, but it
is usually a mix of fun and work.
Those memories make the last
days of high school nostalgic,
and the graduation ceremony that
marks the entrance to adulthood
is a bittersweet transition for everyone,
especially parents. Some
students have a hard time saying
goodbye as they leave to go to
college. Parents sometimes have
it even harder.
Most of Saldivar’s good friends
are not graduating yet, so it will
be hard for her to leave them and
not see them on a daily basis.
Saldivar knows that reaching
graduation is not easy for everyone
but has advice for upcoming
seniors. “Keep up with your
grades and the TAKS test,” she
said. “ There are some seniors out
there that didn’t make it because
of that.”
The tall, quiet 18-year-old put
on her senior ring, and her white
cap and gown. The excitement
showed on her face and she was
beaming with pride and emotion.
This day, with a single step and
the symbolic flip of the tassel, she
will embark on her life journey.

Zapatero dedica más de seis décadas a su oficio

Si se dañan los zapatos, pues
compramos otros, pero ¿qué pasa
cuando tenemos uno zapatos que
nos gustan mucho, o que nos dan
una comodidad que difícilmente
podemos encontrar?
El calzado es como el medio
de transporte que permite que
vayamos a donde necesitemos, es
la protección que nuestros pies
ocupan para protegerse del frio,
del calor, del agua, etc., claro sin
dejar de lado que estéticamente
juegan un papel muy importante
en nuestro diario vestir, de ahí
que haya una gran variedad y
diversidad de zapatos, mas para el
mercado femenino que masculino.

momento en que el hombre creó
por primera vez una protección

para sus pies, hace unos 15,000
años. Durante la edad de Piedra,
las mujeres eran responsables de
la confección del calzado para
toda la familia. En algunos clanes
de mayores dimensiones no tardó
en establecerse la división de los
trabajos, de modo que uno de los
miembros del grupo quedó encargado
de la elaboración de zapatos.
En Mesopotamia eran comunes
los zapatos de cuero crudo, amarrados
a los pies por tiras del mismo
material. Los coturnos (zapatos
con una gran suela de corcho) eran
símbolos de alta posición social.
Los griegos llegaron a lanzar
moda con modelos diferentes para
el pie izquierdo y derecho. En
Roma el calzado indicaba la clase
social y los cónsules, por ejemplo,
usaban zapatos blancos, los senadores,
zapatos marrones prendidos
por cuatro cintas negras de cuero
atadas con dos nudos, y el calzado
tradicional de las legiones eran los
botines que descubrían los dedos.
En la edad media, tanto los
hombres como las mujeres usaban
zapatos de cuero abiertos que
tenían una forma semejante a las

usaban botas altas y bajas amarradas
delante y al lado. El material
más corriente era la piel de vaca,
pero las botas de calidad superior
eran hechas de piel de cabra.
A mediados del siglo XIX comienzan
a aparecer las máquinas
para auxiliar en la confección de
los calzados, pero solamente la
máquina de costura pasó a ser
más accesible. A partir de la cuarta
década del siglo XX, grandes
cambios comienzan a sucederse
en las industrias del calzado; como
el cambio de cueros por gomas
y también materiales sintéticos,
principalmente en los calzados
infantiles y femeninos.
En pleno siglo XXI y en un país
como este, desarrollado, el oficio
de zapatero está en “extinción” e
igual es el caso de los lugares de
reparación de calzado. En San Antonio
existen solamente alrededor
de quince sitios en los cuales uno
puede llevar sus zapatos a reparar.

Two million people depend
on success of RIP

There is a threat looming on
those who depend on the Edwards
Aquifer for water that the federal
government or even our own state
legislature could take over and
restrict pumping – restrictions
that could drastically cut the water
supply.
The problem stems from a 1991
lawsuit filed by the Sierra Club
under the Federal Endangered Species
Act, which ultimately resulted
in the creation of the Edwards
Aquifer Authority. The job of the
EAA is to regulate pumping from
the aquifer and to ensure critical
levels to maintain continuous flows
for the Comal and San Marcos
Springs to protect threatened species
and endangered wildlife there.
THE HISTORY
In 2006, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife
Service helped put together a
group of interested parties to try to
come up with a solution together
that could save the eight federally
listed species that depend on the
Edwards Aquifer to survive. That
team is collectively known as the
Edwards Aquifer Recovery Implementation
Program (RIP).
In 2007, the Texas Legislature
approved SB-3, directing San
Antonio Water System and other
state and municipal water agencies
to participate in the RIP. The law
also demands a final plan by Sept.
2012, which must address how
the Aquifer will be managed to
preserve the listed species, especially
during droughts and critical
periods, and must be approved by
the USFWS.
Dr. Calvin Finch, director of
water resources at San Antonio
Water System, is upbeat about our
prospects.
“The aquifer is dynamic, and
historically, never reached a point
so low that San Marcos Spring
flows were threatened, although
in the 1950’s, it did for Comal,”
he explained. That level was about
612 feet, and at that level the spring
flows at Comal went dry.
Even though such low levels are
not expected, the EAA is utilizing
computer models to predict spring
flows based on past pumping patterns
and rainfalls, and those models
are conservative enough to create
a plan for the worst scenarios.

señor me dijo: “hasta que seas
madre, no entenderás lo qué es
ser mujer”. Me he dado cuenta
del valor que se le adjudica a las

engendrar vida y cuánto definen

families embark on beach vacations,
visit local water parks,
and spend quality time around
the pool. However, while we
enjoy the water, it is important
to make sure that our children
do so safely. May is National
Water Safety Month. Nationally,
drowning is one of the leading
causes of death for children under
the age of five. While child
drowning is entirely preventable,
it is an unfortunate fact that approximately
70 children drown
each year in Texas. So as your
family prepares to enjoy the
water this summer, please keep
these helpful tips in mind.
• Stay alert. Never take your
eyes off children in the pool.

que se le hizo inmediatamente
después de su nombramiento
como Reina, cometió un error
garrafal gramatical cuando al
preguntarle sobre la candidata
que quedo en segundo lugar,
su respuesta fue “YO y Carolina…”
el locutor entrevistador
viendo su error la quiso corregir
diciéndole Carolina…pero fue
interrumpido por la Reina quien
repitió: “YO y Carolina somos
es la cosecha que recogerás en
el futuro.
Indudablemente que los hijos
son una gran bendición, pero
si tú y tu pareja optan por no
tener hijos, no te asustes ni
sientas culpabilidad. Conozco
mujeres que se sienten solas
aunque tienen muchos niños,
y otras que los tuvieron solo
para complacer a sus esposos o
familiares, y eso no ha garantizado
su felicidad.
Hoy le diría a mi profesor
que la vida es una oportunidad
para hacer tres cosas: perseguir
tus sueños, entregar a otros tus
talentos y disfrutar diariamente
el regalo de tu maravillosa existencia.

minute, and if a person can be
resuscitated within the next 4-6
minutes, they can avoid most
permanent forms of brain damage.
• Install a barrier. Install
a four-sided barrier, such as a
fence with self-closing gates that
completely surround the pool.
If your home is the fourth side
of the barrier, install alarms on
doors leading to the pool area.
There are a number of other pool
safety devices available, such
as safety covers and perimeter
or in-water alarms that can alert
you to a child’s proximity to

elegida Reina de Nuestra Belleza
Latina 2010 por sus propios
meritos y sus regios modales que
hicieron que los Jueces la fueran
conservando como una de las
favoritas, semana tras semana,
hasta la etapa final en la cual fue
merecidamente coronada Reina
de Nuestra Belleza Latina, para
gobernar durante un año que
incluye parte del 2010 y parte
del 2011.

Para los inmigrantes latinos,
tres lecciones del apartheid
Sabía que comenzar mi reciente
entrevista en Miami con
el arzobispo Desmond Tutu
haciendo una pregunta sobre
fútbol iba a distraernos un
poco de nuestro tópico principal.
Pero con la creciente
excitación pública en torno a la
Copa Mundial yo quería saber
si su país natal, Sudáfrica -- la
primera nación africana en ser
anfitriona -- estaba preparado
para el reto.
“Sí, creo que sí”, me dijo
Tutu con la sonrisa amplia,
libre, de un niño travieso. “Tenemos
una o dos cosas por hacer
pero ha sido maravilloso ver la
construcción de los estadios y

AZGO
A Tutu le gusta hablar
de “Uvuntu”. ¿Qué es eso?
“Uvuntu es la esencia de ser
humano”, me explicó. “Yo soy
una persona porque tú eres una
persona”.
El hombre que introdujo
este concepto de “Uvuntu” a
la política fue Nelson Mandela,
presidente de la nación de 1994
a 1999. Mandela -- quien pasó
27 años encarcelado por sus actividades
de oposición a la minoría
blanca -- fue ampliamente
conocido por sus políticas de
reconciliación y por negociar
con sus enemigos.
Pregunté al arzobispo: ¿Qué
deben aprender otros líderes de
Nelson Mandela? “Creo que es
un don que Dios te da el que
puedas ser un líder”, dijo Tutu.
“Y el gran don es recordar que
tú eres un líder para el bien de
aquellos a los que lideras. Tú
no eres un líder para engrandecerte
o enriquecerte. Tú estás
ahí por el bien de los que dicen:
‘tú eres nuestro líder.”’
Tutu tiene una extraordinaria
cualidad de hacerte sentir a
gusto y como en casa. Por eso,
aunque sólo habíamos estado
hablando unos cuantos minutos,
me atreví a hacerle la pregunta
más difícil ¿Qué equipo
ganará el partido inicial en el
Mundial: México o Sudáfrica?
“Soy de México”, le empecé
a decir ...
Me interrumpió inmediatamente.
“¡Mala suerte!”, dijo.
Su risa feliz rebotó en las paredes

dí la mano, él la tomó entre las
suyas, fijó su mirada franca y

Living with an uninvited guest
Sometimes, in life, we have to
move forward no matter how hot
the heat may get. That’s what I
thought to myself the other day
when T.J. and I decided to hire
someone to fix the air conditioning
unit at her previous home—
the house we have been diligently
working on to get sold.
The old unit died out on us
a few months ago so we had to
put that on the list “of things to
repair and replace” before putting
the house on the market.
Now that the simmering summer
heat is upon us, and there is still
much work to be done before
the “for sale” sign gets dug in
the ground, I’m glad we had the
unit replaced.
For T.J., fixing up and selling
the house she shared with her late
husband for 10 years is a definite
move forward with her new life,
but she sometimes takes a few
steps back when the temperatures
begin to rise. Summertime is here
and T.J. knows she won’t be able
to have some of that fun under
the sun when her work is done.
For most people with MS, the
summer heat can be a serious
problem when wanting to move
forward with daily activities and
routines. T.J. has to accept the
fact that she cannot always participate
in summer activities like
a bike ride, a game of volleyball,
roller skating, gardening, etc.
After about an hour in the sun,
her body begins to heat up and
short out like…well…a broken
air conditioning unit.
“I can feel great all day, but
when I go out into the heat, my
body begins to feel numb and
heavy, even immobile,” says T.J.
Although sunlight provides
lots of vitamin D for the body,
which is good not only for people
with MS, but for everybody, too
much summer sun can exasperate

the symptoms, especially when
doing things that can heat up the
body. Cool, calm water activities,
however, like swimming or
tubing down the Frio River can
be very do-able.
“But even though the warm,
blue, summer skies and sun
kissed beaches can look so enticing,
they can be hazardous to my
health,” T.J. admits. “There are
plenty of added worries and concerns
for people with MS when
it comes to the summer heat.”
Since being diagnosed, T.J.
has learned about a few tips for
keeping cool she would like
to share with others…mostly
common sense type stuff. Staying
very well hydrated is one
of the important ones. Staying
indoors is another. If you have
to be outdoors, keep a cool damp
cloth or bandana around your
neck to ward off the heat. Some
people even keep a spray bottle

Chair, Ms. Elia Mendoza, who
has been one of the main organizers
of this event, represents one
the finest examples of dedication
and devotion to the cause
of the organization that she has
embraced for more than 20 years.

When I asked her about LULAC,
she describes it as, “One of the
oldest, and indeed the largest
Latino civil rights and advocacy
group in the United States that
works to improve opportunities
for Hispanic Americans from
every region, and is one of the
most influential and representative
voice of Hispanics.”
Texas, is indeed one of the
most important states in this
organization, where since its
creation they have been not only
part of the process, but have had
an active role on one of the most
interesting, although difficult
and too many times painful, social
process of the history of the
Latino community, an integral
part of the overall history of this
country.
Therefore, it was only appropriate
to have The Benson
Latin American Collection at
the University of Austin, as the
official archival repository of the
Presidential Papers Project.
The current LULAC National
President, Rosa Rosales will
soon have her place in history at
the prestigious archives, and a
new cycle of leadership will start.
The enormous network of this
organization will go through the
turmoil of new elections, where
different groups will compete.
In fact, one of our own local
San Antonians, Jaime Martinez,
is running to become the next
National President, although
other names will be as well in
the ballots, to try to become ‘The
voice of Hispanics’.
I wish luck to all of them who
have accepted to leave the comfort
of their own life to try to defend
and fight for the rights of all
of us, and for the rights to those
whose voice cannot be heard.
Lucía Durá, a doctoral candidate
in the rhetoric and
composition program at The
University of Texas at El Paso,
has traveled the globe documenting
the success of these
“positive deviants” – those few
individuals in every community
who find unique ways to
look at, and overcome, seemingly
intractable problems.
Durá’s proposal to apply the
positive deviance approach to
help raise student retention
and graduation rates in Texas
has earned her the highly competitive
2010 Public Interest
Award from The University of
Texas at Arlington Academy
of Distinguished Scholars. In
addition to receiving a $5,000
cash prize, Durá will have
an opportunity to present her
ideas to the Texas legislature.
“The use of positive deviance
in problem-solving requires
a simple shift in perception,”
Durá said. “Rather than
focusing on the problem and
seeking external solutions, we
look at what an individual or
community is doing right and
with them anytime they are out
and about during these summer
months. But most importantly,
T.J. suggests keeping your
friends and family well aware of
what is going on with your body.
Often times, people with MS
do not look like they have a
debilitating disease to others.
Therefore, it is vitally important
to keep the people you with
aware that you might have to
leave early or not stay out too
long.
“Just be aware of your body
and your body’s needs, and carry
a strong voice that isn’t ashamed
or embarrassed to speak up,” T.J.
insists.

However, when we talk about
the voice of Hispanics, as anybody
knows, you cannot expect
to hear only a smooth voice. The
truth is that among Hispanics, we
tend to ‘sing’ with all our hearts
and with all our might. This is
true not only in our music, but in
our views and in our needs that
in reality are so diverse.
It is true that the soft and usually
sad notes of a tango, do not
seem to have much to do with a
loud and rhythmic salsa, and that
might seem difficult to have this
accords being played by a mariachi
or even a conga. However, I
believe that even though we are
different, we can all raise our
voices and sing.
If not as a single voice, let’s
sing as a choir, where the different
tones can add to the beauty
of the whole. Hopefully, we will
not forget something very important
…we all have to sing to the
same song.

Beat the heat: Staying cool
in SA’s triple digit heat

Summer hasn’t officially started
in San Antonio yet, but it’s already
hot enough to find ways to cool
off. South Texas has dozens of
way to beat the heat with public
parks and public pools, even water
parks, swimming holes and rivers.
The San Antonio Parks and
Recreation Department says
swimming is a great way to cool
off while getting in a stress free
workout. Swimming pumps up
your heart, tones muscle and relieves
stress. Outdoor pools are all
over San Antonio and for the 2010
season, the pools will open from
1 p.m to 7 p.m., June 12 through
Aug. 15. General admission is
free, but there are fees for classes.
Pools are closed to the public on
Mondays. For more information,

city for great water parks.
SeaWorld San Antonio, Six Flags
Fiesta Texas, Splashtown and
Schlitterban are easy to get to and
great daylong getaways.
SeaWorld has some terrific
family-friendly activities to enjoy.
From Lost Lagoon, with its Wave
Wash Pool for the entire family
to Castaway Cruisin’ for tubing
along a 1,200 foot-long water
route, cooling off is easy while
being plashed and sprayed with
tunnel jets, foam shooters, and
misters. There’s even a three-story
funhouse known as Splash Attack,
complete with geysers, spouts,
dumping bucket, and a maze. This
area is sure to be a crowd pleaser
with the little ones.
Six Flags Fiesta Texas also is
another way to beat the heat. Six
Flag’s White Water Bay offers
a variety of rides including The
Bender, which features a 50-foot
drop. Fiesta Texas also offers
shows in the air-conditioned
Zaragoza Theater, strolling entertainment,
and fun for those who
would rather not be in the water.
Play passes and season passes
are $59.99 and $69.99. For more

Splashtown is a family-owned
business and has been in San
Antonio for 26 years. The park
features 40 water slides, picnic
areas and beautiful landscaping.
One of Splashtown’s best features
is the dive-in movies. The
movies start at 8 p.m. every Friday
throughout summer until August
6. Even non-swimmers can join
their families without getting into
the water. There are seating areas
for those who choose not to get
into the water.
Splashtown offers discounts for
children, senior citizens, military,
and police, firefighters and EMT
personnel. The park is open 11
a.m. to 8 p.m., and as late as 9
p.m. most Fridays and Saturdays.
Parking and life jackets are free.
For those who plan on going often,
the season pass, which sells for
$49.99 each or $39.99 each for
a four-pack, might be the most
cost-effective option. “Our Season
Pass is still the best deal around,”
said Kim Morris, Splashtown
Group Sales.
Schlitterbahn is a popular water
park option just a short drive away
in New Braunfels open daily from
10 a.m. to 8 p.m. This summer,
Schlitterbahn is showcasing a new
ride, the Grande Carousel. They
have opened three new rides in
the past three years. Schlitterbahn
offers free parking, free tubes, and
the freedom to bring your own picnic
lunch into the park.They also
offers discounts to senior citizens,

a public park or a river, might be
a great alternative.
There are many river activities
such as tubing, rafting or fishing
at the nearby Guadalupe River in
New Braunfels. Camping reservations
can be made all year round
for camping grounds or cabins.
Blanco State Park, located
along the Blanco River in Blanco
County, and Guadalupe State
Park, on the boundary of Comal
and Kendall County, are terrific
day trips that offer all kinds of
ways to cool off and find adventure.
Available activities at both
parks include canoeing, swimming,
fishing, and tubing, picnicking,
hiking and camping. Tours
are available to those interested
in learning about park history.

For an old-fashioned swimming-hole
experience, don’t miss
historic San Pedro Springs Park,
right here in town at 1315 San
Pedro Avenue. Nestled in the
nation’s second-oldest city park
is the San Pedro lake/pool, which
was created as part of a renovation
project that began in 1998.
The city actually removed the old
swimming pool and replaced it
with a new “lake/pool” in the bed
of an original lake fed by springs
and surrounded by large cypress
trees. It is unfenced except during
the swimming season. There is no
admission fee.
St. Mary’s students
win for being green

Engineering students were recognized
for their environmental
efforts at the City of San
Antonio’s 2nd Annual Green
Building Awards Luncheon.
In April for St. Mary’s Fiesta
Oyster Bake, the students,
with the help of Corbo
Electric Company Inc., built
a 1.4-kilowatt solar panel to
provide electricity to light
more than a dozen food booths.

representative were recognized
for their green building efforts
with an Honorable Mention by
Build San Antonio Green.

they then affixed it atop a 14
foot tall steel pole on the soccer
field next to their Institute
of Electrical and Electronics
Engineers’ (IEEE) Frito pie
booth.
There’s talk that the students’
extra credit work for
Fiesta Verde may have even
sparked a green competition
for next year’s Fiesta which is
fine by Churchwell, Srinivasan
and Crowell. They’ll be working
between now and Fiesta
Oyster Bake 2011 to make
their system bigger, better and
more efficient. Next year, they
want to power more booths,
providing more than just the
lighting. They also hope to
put it on a trailer, making it
mobile and possible to be used
at other community events.
Who knows maybe one year
all of Fiesta Oyster Bake will
be solar powered!
Churchwell, Srinivasan and
Crowell will be seniors at the
start of the fall 2010 semester.
This project will count
as the students’ senior design
project, which is a graduation
requirement of all engineering
majors by St. Mary’s School
of Science, Engineering and
Technology.

VIA Metropolitan Transit is getting
down to the wire when it comes
to finalizing preparation plans for
Bus Rapid Transit in San Antonio.
Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) is a
specialized transportation service
that incorporates rubber tire, high
capacity vehicles with the reliability
and advantages of rail travel.
VIA held a public meeting to hear
from citizens regarding the draft environmental
assessment for VIA’s
proposed rapid transit line on the
Fredericksburg corridor on Monday,
May 24th, and more meetings are
on the way.
The BRT will serve the UTSA
1604 campus, USAA, the Medical
Center, Balcones Heights, The Deco
District, UTSA downtown campus,
the central business district and St.
Paul Square. There will be eight stations
(16 platforms, 8 in each direction)
constructed along the corridor.
This meeting began with an
open house where attendees were
encouraged to ask questions, and
view the exhibits on hand. The exhibits
consisted of examples of the
BRT layout, station design, vehicle
design, and maps of the proposed
routes.
One of the key note speakers at
the meeting was Keith Parker, VIA
President/CEO.
“This is the largest public transit
investment we have ever made by
far. This project will bring state-of
–the art buses, beautiful artisticlooking
stations, wonderfully located
transit centers and bring them
in a whole package that puts VIA
in the forefront of some of the nicer
transit projects around the country,
“said Parker.
One of the most significant points
that were emphasized was the ability
to ride nonstop from downtown
to the Medical Center with one flat
rate.
Randy Bear, USAA employee
who lives downtown, said, “ I
have tried to do bus commute from
there to USAA and it takes over an
hour and 15 minutes to go one way
without getting off the bus at al, as
opposed to driving 15 minutes. This
will help me commute from downtown
to USAA in a shorter time, and
will actually encourage me to use
public transit to go to work each day,
instead of driving to work each day.”
Each of the stations will have a
stylized vehicle and a unique station.
Fredericksburg Road was chosen
as the preferred BRT corridor,
because it connects two major employment
centers, Downtown and
the Medical Center.
According to the American Public
Transportation Association,
2009, Americans took 10.2 billion
trips on public transportation.
Some benefits of public transportation
include enhancement of
personal opportunities, saving fuel,
reducing congestion, providing
economic opportunities, and saving
money.
Besides these citywide benefits
there are some unique perks to the
BRT system such as traffic signal
priority, level boarding, increased
frequency, and real-time bus operation.
There is much concern surrounding
the issue of BRT. Some are
concerned about the overall cost of
the project, and others are worried
about the environmental impact that
these new vehicles will have.
To ease the minds of naysayers
VIA is working hard to make
the transition to BRT easy on the
environment. The BRT vehicles
will maintain an environmentallyfriendly
propulsion system.

Fiesta Noche Del Rio hará donaciones
a más de 12 instituciones

En el transcurso del año The
Alamo Kiwanis Club, con el
dinero colectado en su producción,
Fiesta Noche Del Rio,
distribuirá 37 mil dólares entre
una docena de instituciones de
beneficencia pública y agencias
caritativas como Respite Care
of San Antonio, Any Babe Can,
Children’s Miracle Network and
Children’s Shelter.
Fiesta Noche del Rio es una
producción musical creada en
1957 por Alamo Kiwanis con el
objeto de reunir fondos económicos
y distribuirlos entre instituciones
de asistencia social, principalmente
en aquellas que se dedican
al cuidado de los niños. A la fecha
se han distribuido 5 millones de
dólares, aparte de los gastos que
ocasiona una producción de esta
categoría.
Los conciertos son a las 8.30
PM en el Arneson River Theatre
de La Villita todos los viernes y
sábados a las 8.30 PM. Hasta el
14 de Agosto. La entrada cuesta
15 dólares para adultos; 12 para
adultos mayores y 5 para niños de
12 años o menos.
Es oportuno mencionar que el
éxito de Fiesta Noche del Rio se
debe a diferentes factores, como
la calidad de los artistas, la agilidad
de la producción, la coreografía
y la dedicación del comité
organizador, que este año dirige
Rocky Hoffman. Una mención
especial requieren los voluntarios
que hacen posible esta producción
y que son miembros activos de
Alamo Kiwanis Club.
La manera de conseguir tales
recursos es con una variedad musical
en el Arneson River Theatre
de La Villita, espectáculo artístico
que se ha venido presentando
ininterrumpidamente por más de
cinco décadas y el cual da oportunidad

folklóricos de España, México,
Argentina y desde luego de Texas.
Elizabeth Sánchez López
se integró al elenco de Fiesta
Noche del Rio en 1986. En 1993
tomo la posición de coreógrafa y
directora y en 1999 agregó a su
posición el cargo de primera voz
en el programa, posiciones que ha
sostenido hasta la fecha. Originaria
de San Antonio, Sánchez ha
actuado y dirigido conciertos de
Sea World, Fiesta Texas y Miss
Panamerican Pageant. Y entre
otras importantes comisiones coordinó
los números bailables para
el U.S. Olympic Festival. Fuera
de la estación de Noche Fiesta del
Rio es supervisora de Dance and
Theatre Department de Northside
Independent School District.

complicadas, en trabajos más
sencillos nos demoramos una
semana, eso sí les entregamos
un buen trabajo”, declaró el Sr.
Galindo.
Los trabajos de reparación no
se limitan solo al calzado, el Sr.
Galindo repara maletas, chamarras
de piel, cinturones, bolsos de
dama, maletines, y hasta elabora
plantillas ortopédicas especiales.
“Trabajamos con algunos doctores,
ellos nos manda una especia
de receta en la cual nos dan las
instrucciones que requiere la
plantilla, de acuerdo al problema
que el paciente tenga, esa es otra
entrada de trabajo y de dinero”,
manifestó Don Carlos.
La clientela de la familia Galindo
son en su mayoría mujeres,
de 10 clientes solamente uno es
hombre, y las reparaciones más
comunes son las tapas de zapatos.
Don Carlos nos compartió que a
lo largo de su oficio le ha tocado
reparar cosas no muy comunes,
como artículos que usan los
cazadores, hasta una especie de
montura para camellos.
La crisis económica no es ha
sido un problema para el negocio
del Sr. Galindo, de hecho es ahora
cuando más trabajo tiene. “Cuando
los republicanos están en
el poder a nosotros nos va mejor
económicamente, quien sabe por
qué será”, finalizó Don Carlos.

Scrambled
thoughts

Today’s Project Spurs fan
mail comes from Brian Storey
from down-under in Australia.
He has a stream-of-conscious
on various players and I try to
tackle them one at a time.
“With the season gone now
I thought I’d get back in touch
with a couple of brief thoughts.
I’m sure there will be thousands
of season reviews and all will be
along similar lines. Key notes
are, positives: Hill and Blair
(although a suitable front court
mate for Blair is needed); negatives:
definitely the regression
of Mason who looked a player
in his first Spurs season, and the
very disappointing RJ.
I thought rather than looking
back, I’ll look forward
instead. There will be a lot of
Parker trade talk, and while I
don’t want to see him traded,
I thought I’d entertain the possibility.
A scenario I almost
like involves the Griz. It centres
around TP for Rudy Gay (sign
and trade) and Mike Conley.
There are a couple other pieces
in it I would look at as well,
but that’s the core. Gay fills the
need on the wing and makes RJ
very tradeable at the deadline
where he ceases to be known
as RJ the player and becomes
known as RJ’s expiring contract.
Conley takes TP’s place
in a decent rotation with Hill
and Manu. The Grizz cannot
hold onto Gay anyway and
have looked to trade Conley
previously.
From that, you also hope that
Splitter comes over and while
he is unlikely to be the saviour,
he gives additional depth in the
front court. We would not have
been killed by the Suns pick and
roll with Splitter defending it
(side note – why did Pop not
even try Mahinmi who is excellent
defending the pick and roll?
Even for 5 minutes).
Regardless, with RJ’s expiring
contract to work with,
they’ll have one of the better
assets come the mid-season
trade deadline anyway and
could pull off a decent deal with
a cap cleaner.
The biggest thing that needs
addressing is reliable outside
shooting. Bonner will be back.
He is the best shooter on the
roster and while he is often the
subject of Spurs fans ire, he has
a skill set that is in demand.
A wing who can hit the open
shot... maybe a Korver, Rasual
Butler, Eddie House, or Kapono?
All available and might
look at the Spurs... would help
as well.
I also like the thought of
signing Sean Livingston. If TP
gets traded, he could be had
cheap and would be a low risk,
(potentially) high reward guy.
At worst, he’d be a very solid
backup.
Just a couple of thoughts, and
probably quite scrambled.”

He sustained groin and thigh
problems that kept him sidelined
for 45 days at one point, unable
to perform like the FIFA player
of the year he once was.
Brazil doctors said the groin
problem is not an issue anymore,
and that the left thigh ailment
should not keep Kaka from starting
for Brazil in the team’s World
Cup opener against North Korea
on June 15.
“I was worried at first,” Kaka
said. “It was very limiting, but
now I’m being able to move
around much better. I’m going
through intense treatment and
with 10 days left until the opener
on Thursday, and two years later,
the burden of proof remained
squarely with Gasol. Would Garnett
punk him again?
Well, if Game 1 of the 2010 Finals
falls short of a definitive answer,
it’s certainly the beginning
of one. As it happened, Gasol-
Garnett was the evening’s critical
matchup. But their famous first
act yielded no clues. This time, it
was Gasol who had his way. Little
wonder the famously voluble Garnett
has finally stopped talking
trash to the Spaniard.
You want the game in numbers?
After three quarters, Gasol
had 18 points to Garnett’s 12. He
had three blocks. Garnett, long
alleged to be among the game’s
most intimidating defenders, had
none. Gasol had 10 rebounds.
Garnett had one. One. A single
rebound in almost 26 minutes.
Not coincidentally, the game
was already over. The score was
84-64. The plus-nine rebounding
advantage that Gasol enjoyed
over Boston’s seven-footer was
reflected in the astounding differential

Tras haber consultado con
líderes de la comunidad y organizaciones
deportivas, la corte
de comisionados que preside el
juez Nelson W. Wolff y el municipio
de San Antonio unieron
esfuerzos para llevar a la realidad
la construcción de cinco canchas
reglamentarias.
El proyecto fue respaldado por
el comisionado Paul Elizondo
titular del precinto 2, y del concejal
Ray López del sexto distrito
municipal. El miércoles 2 de junio
en las canchas del Alamo Sportsplex
sede del organismo Alamo
City Youth Soccer Organization
(ACYSO ubicado en el sector
Culebra Road, FM 1560 entre
Braun Road y FM 471), el juez
Wolff encabezó la ceremonia del
primer disparo a gol, con lo que
se dio por iniciada la etapa de
construcción de los cinco campos
de fútbol, así como áreas de
calentamiento físico, puestos de
concesión y servicios sanitarios.
ACYSO cuenta con siete canchas
oficiales adyacentes al Alamo
Sportsplex, que también opera
campos en una superficie de 30
acres ubicada en Talley Road.
El proyecto de las cinco canchas,
será financiado con la
aportación del condado de más
de cinco millones de dólares provenientes
de impuestos a hoteles
y moteles (aprobado por el voto
ciudadano). El municipio de San
Antonio aportó el terreno donde
serán construidos los 5 campos,
añadiendo la suma de más de un
millón de dólares, según reporte
de prensa emitido por la corte de
comisionados.
“Este es un excelente proyecto
deportivo, al concluirse ACYSO
tendrá más espacio para beneficio
de los equipos participantes. A la
vez se va a poder atraer torneos
de gran calidad futbolística. Se
agradece la aportación del municipio
de San Antonio, y de
la aportación del dinero que el
condado aportará. Nos complace
invertir en este tipo de proyectos,
que en el futuro beneficiaran a la
comunidad de ambas entidades”,
dijo el juez Wolff.
“La combinación del condado
y ciudad para la construcción
de cinco canchas, es de gran
valor para nuestra organización”
añadió Frank Olvera, presidente
de ACYSO. “En el futuro tendremos
más espacio y ello servirá
para organizar torneos de alto
nivel. Con 12 canchas ACYSO,
seguirá marcando el liderazgo
en la rama del balompié amateur
regional”, dijo.
Por su parte el concejal López
agradeció a la asociación del
condado por su aportación para
la expansión de Alamo Sportsplex
que ayudará a enriquecer la comunidad.
“Deportistas pequeños y
adultos van a tener la oportunidad
de ejercitarse en un parque moderno,
que asegurará el bienestar
comunitario”, dijo Lopez.

tendency is for him to keep improving,”
Dunga said.
Kaka was already a top player
when he was with Brazil at the
2006 World Cup, but at the time
he shared much of the spotlight
with Ronaldinho, Ronaldo, Roberto
Carlos and Adriano. Now,
few players are attracting similar
attention as Kaka.
Wearing Brazil’s famed No. 10
jersey, Kaka knows all eyes will
be on him this time.
“I’m ready to be one of the
team’s leaders, I’m ready to
take this responsibility,” Kaka
said. “I’ve always accepted this
responsibility.”
Kaka also was a member of the
2002 team that won the World
Cup in South Korea and Japan,
but he was a youngster and played
less than 25 minutes in that tournament.
One of Adidas’ high profile
players, Kaka also downplayed
complaints from his teammates
about the ball being used in this
month’s tournament, saying such
criticism is normal before every
World Cup.
“I’m not going to criticize the
World Cup ball,” he said. “I always
hear players complain about
the ball in every competition.
People were complaining a lot in
the first week, but then everyone
starts adapting to it and things
start changing.”
Players from Brazil and other
nations complained about the
Adidas ball, some even comparing
it to those bought at supermarkets.
“It’s a new ball, and everything
new causes an impression,” he
said. “There have been some complaints
now, but maybe during
the World Cup players will start
saying different things.”

“As Jim Joyce said in his postgame
comments, there is no dispute
that last night’s game should
have ended differently,” Selig
said in a statement. “While the
human element has always been
an integral part of baseball, it is
vital that mistakes on the field be
addressed.
“Given last night’s call and
other recent events, I will examine
our umpiring system, the expanded
use of instant replay and
all other related features.”
Selig added that he will consult
with the players’ and umpires’
unions before announcing “any
decisions.” He will also meet with
baseball’s Special Committee for
On-Field Matters — of which
Tigers manager Jim Leyland is
a member.
When asked earlier Thursday if
he would like for Selig to award
him with a perfect game after
the fact, Galarraga replied, “I’d
love it.”
“The more important thing is,
for my heart, I knew I threw a
perfect game,” the right-hander
said.
Joyce didn’t offer an opinion
earlier Thursday when asked
about the possibility of Selig
reversing his call. But such a
decision might have eased the
umpire’s conscience. Joyce was
inconsolable on Wednesday night
in the aftermath of his mistake,
and he became emotional on several
occasions Thursday.
“I took a perfect game away
from that kid over there,” he said
Wednesday.
By the time Joyce arrived at
Comerica Park on Thursday
morning, some fan reaction had
turned hostile. (However, Sports
by Brooks reports that it might be
a lot more than just hostility.)
Joyce indicated in a brief interview
with reporters that his family
had been targeted. MLB officials
wouldn’t confirm whether any
specific threats of harm had been
made.
“I wish my family was out of
this,” Joyce said, still teary-eyed
some 12 hours later. “I wish they
would just direct it all to me.
“My wife is a rock. My kids
are very strong. But they don’t
deserve this. I’ll take it. I’ll take
it. I’ll take whatever you can give
me. I’ll handle it like a man. And
I’ll do the best I can.”
Joyce didn’t specify what “it”
was, but he said, “It’s a big problem.”
But Galarraga and the Tigers
bear no grudge. Galarraga forgave
Joyce immediately, and Leyland
expressed hope that Detroit fans
would applaud the umpiring crew
on Thursday.
The umpires didn’t get an
ovation, but the afternoon crowd
was civil.
Selig’s statement praised the
Tigers for their “dignity and
class,” saying the organization’s
conduct was “admirable and
embodied good sportsmanship of
the highest order.” Galarraga was
honored Thursday in a pregame
ceremony in which Chevrolet
presented him with a cherry red
Corvette convertible.
Galarraga, who began the season
in the minor leagues, has
handled his newfound notoriety as
gracefully as he did Wednesday’s
disappointment. He didn’t call for
the expansion of instant replay
when he met with a large group
of reporters on Thursday.
The Late Show with David
Letterman has already requested
an interview, one source said, but
it’s unclear if the team’s schedule
will permit Galarraga to accept
the offer. He slept only two hours
on Wednesday night.
“My dad said something that
really (calmed me) down,” the 28-
year-old said. “He said, ‘Son, I’m
proud of you. I know you threw a
perfect game. Keep the ball. Make
sure to keep the CD.’”
Joyce is behind the plate for
Thursday afternoon’s game between
the Tigers and Indians. He
needed an extra moment or two to
compose himself before entering
the field via the tunnel behind
home plate at 1 p.m. ET.
Fans close to the tunnel applauded
as the crew took the field.
The cheers continued as Galarraga,
bearing the lineup card,
shook hands with Joyce.
But when Joyce’s name was announced
over the public address
system, some boos were heard.
Earlier, Galarraga said he hoped
Detroit fans will forgive Joyce.
“I say many times: Nobody’s
perfect,” Galarraga said. “Everybody
makes a mistake. I’m sure
he don’t want to make that call.
You see that guy last night, he
feels really bad. He don’t even
change. The other umpires shower,
eat. He was sitting in the seat
(and saying), ‘I’m so sorry.’”

tip of the iceberg -- which have been
consistent competitors in the European
Cup. The Bundesliga, despite
not bringing in as much money as
some of the other European leagues,
is healthy, and is a preferred destination
for players around the world. The
Bundesliga still attracts the largest
average attendance in European
soccer and is considered the most
financially stable.
MANAGER: Joachim Loew, a
former assistant and decidedly soothing
compared to Juergen Klinsmann.
He’s not flashy, but he’s got the guys
playing solid, workman-like football.
He’s had a varied managerial career,
coaching in Turkey, Germany and
Austria.
KEY PLAYERS: Let’s mention
who’s not here. There’s captain and
team leader Michael Ballack, who
suffered an ankle injury in Chelsea’s
FA Cup final victory. No. 1 ‘keeper
Rene Adler (Leverkusen) is out
after he had to undergo surgery to
repair a broken rib. That’s a loss, but
Hans-Joerg Butt (Bayern) should
be able to step in. Germany would
also have liked to have had defender
Simon Rolfes (Leverkusen), but he
hasn’t recovered from knee surgery.
There’s still lots here. Philipp Lahm
(Bayern) has been outstanding all
year with Bayern, and is the key man
out of the back. He has taken over
as captain with Ballack gone. I like
Bastian Schweinsteiger (Bayern) running
out on the wing, and you have
to expect Lukas Podolski (Cologne)
and Miroslav Klose (Bayern) will be
up top. Simply put, these guys have a
lot of weapons.
FIFA RANKINGS: 6th. Highest
was 1st (1993); lowest was 23rd
(2006).
FIRST ROUND OPPONENTS:
Australia, Ghana, Serbia
HEAD TO HEAD AGAINST
AUSTRALIA: As East and West
Germany, they whipped the Aussies
twice at the 1974 World Cup. More recently,
Germany held off the Aussies
at the 2005 Confederations Cup 4-3.

GHANA: They’ve only met once,
and it was 17 years ago. In 1993 at a
Bochum friendly, Germany torched
Ghana 6-1.
HEAD TO HEAD AGAINST
SERBIA: As Serbia, the sides have
only met twice, at friendlies staged
in Germany. Germany won both
of them, most recently in 2008 at
Gelsenkirchen, 2-1. As Yugoslavia,
the teams were very familiar with
one another, playing 25 matches as
far back as 1939. The two teams also
have a lot of World Cup meetings
under their belts, meeting six times
in six Cups. Germany won five of
those meetings, with Yugoslavia’s
lone win coming back in 1962 in
Chile, 1-0.
HOW THEY QUALIFIED: In
style, in a fairly tough group. The
Germans topped Russia and the Finns
with eight wins and two draws.
PERCENTAGE CHANCE TO
PROGRESS: 50%. They should go
though, but it’s not a gimme.
TO WATCH: This is a great team
that has a chance to go all the way.
I’m not certain they will, but if anyone’s
picking, you could do worse
than taking a flier on Podolski for the
Golden Boot.

I couldn’t help but wonder if
Doc Rivers – who fashioned a
decidedly tough championship
squad – could recall being outrebounded
like that.
“I don’t know if I recall one,”
he said. “But I know if there was,
we lost that game, too. I can guarantee
you that.”
You don’t rebound; you don’t win.
What’s true during the regular season
holds even truer now.
“They killed us on the glass,” said
Rivers.
In fact, the Lakers killed the Celtics
in just about every facet of the game.
The Lakers tallied 18 more points in
the paint. As it pertains to secondchance
points, Boston was 0-7 –
including two gimme follows (an
attempted dunk and a blown layup)
that Garnett managed to miss. L.A.
had 16 second-chance points.
“They attacked us the entire night,”
said Rivers. “I didn’t think we handled
it very well…They were by far
the more physical team.”
So what do you do about that? he
was asked.
“We’ll watch it on film and
fix it.”
I was tempted to laugh. Then
again, I was tempted to laugh just
four months ago when Rivers’
team arrived here the night of the
trading deadline. The aged, struggling
Celtics had just acquired
the inestimable Nate Robinson,
five-eight. The Cavaliers, with
the best record in basketball, had
landed Antawn Jamison, a sixnine
two-time all-star.
“We’ll see when the playoffs
start,” said Rivers. “We’ll see if age
is a factor. Or if age” – experience, he
meant – “is good. I think in the long
run, it will be good for us.”
Guess it was. And Rivers deserves
the bulk of the credit – for fine coaching
and great faith, for a team that
beat clear favorites in Cleveland and
Orlando.
Still, I’m not sure the Lakers are
something even a great coach can
solve by looking at film. It’s worth
noting that Los Angeles won without
much from Lamar Odom. What’s going
to happen when he starts putting
up numbers? In the meantime, Rivers
can scrutinize Kobe Bryant being
Kobe Bryant, with 30 points and
just the kind of defense that slowed
Rajon Rondo. More problematic than
that, though, is the sore-kneed Kevin
Garnett, who, at 34, has started just
two more NBA games than the 31-
year-old Bryant.
At last, Gasol is showing him he
can’t get by on just a scowl. Gasol
finished with 23 points, 15 boards,
three assists, three blocks. There was
a fastbreak dunk that should make the
highlight reel. But a baseline move
and the put-back layup – both over
Garnett – were more significant.
“I was ready,” said Gasol.
He was pissed off. As well he
should be. He’s had two years to
think about it.

with this little scenario just for
kicks and giggles. Say Parker
heads to Memphis, bringing Gay
and Conley to San Antonio.
You make an excellent point
– the addition of a young athletic
player like Gay would make Jefferson
look like old news. If Gay
is desperate to move to a team with
serious potential for postseason
playing time, then San Antonio
would be a good fit. Gay could
bring better shooting percentage
– compare his 19.6 ppg average
to RJ’s rather measly 9.4 this past
season – as well as the youth that
Jefferson has been lacking in his
game as he approaches 30 next
month.
If he doesn’t opt out of the contract,
Jefferson stands to make $15 million
this season with no guarantee of a
contract extension – one that I can’t
really say he would deserve after
this season’s struggles. He showed
some life in the playoffs, but gave
San Antonio little to cheer about in
regular season. I’d rather pay some
of that to Gay, seeing as he stands
to make $10 million or so per year
should Memphis successfully offer
him a contract extension.
On the other hand, tossing Mike
Conley in the mix to replace to the
aforementioned departed Parker (remember,
this is strictly “what if”)
doesn’t have me convinced. You could
make an argument for Conley’s lack of
experience to explain his lower averages
against Parker’s veteran status,
but only an explosive player could truly
replace Parker on this Spurs squad. Sure
Conley could be developed, but I’m
still not sure that he could fill the void
potentially left by Parker.
On the other hand, I am all for
bringing Tiago Splitter into San
Antonio this season. He’s played
excellent ball in the Euroleague,
giving him experience that he most
likely would not have earned as
a rookie playing in the NBA. As
Project Spurs’ Robby Lim noted in
his article, Splitter would most likely
pair well with Duncan to give the
front court a much-needed boost and
plenty of help in the paint.
In regards to Mahinmi’s courtside
accommodations for the playoffs,
let’s get real. Pop hardly plays
rookies in playoff games unless a)
there’s nothing they could do to ruin
a potential win or b) he’s desperate.
While most fans would say being
on the losing end of a game should
require desperate measures, we all
know that Pop is not the desperate
kind. Besides, Mahinmi needs a good
off-season (see George Hill as to the
improvement I’m referring to) to
seriously prove he’s worth keeping
on the roster.
As for Matt Bonner… I should
admit here that I’m a bit of a “Red
Rocket” fan. I’d love to see him get
a little extra playing time and possibly
improve those shooting stats –
which are already pretty good. Jason
Kapono would be an interesting fit,
but I’m not sure I’m for the Eddie
House idea.
That’s just my two cents… for
what it’s worth.

SAWS proposes 6 ½ percent
rate hike and restructure

and CEO of San Antonio
Water System, points out a fact
he says is little known. “SAWS is
city-owned and not-for-profit,” he
said. Their mission is to provide
the residents of San Antonio with
sustainable and affordable water
services.
Gregorio Flores, vice president
of public affairs for SAWS, said
that mission includes making sure
all the infrastructure is properly
maintained, an endeavor that requires
$250 million in capital
improvements - $92 million for
infrastructure improvements and
another $3.7 million for repairs
and utility costs just in 2011.
The lifespan of the pipes, water
mains and sewer mains, is about
50 years. The total system size
is more than 10,000 miles long,
about 5,038 miles of water mains
and 5,108 miles of sewer mains.
Right now, 18 percent of the
system is more than 50 years old
and needs immediate attention,
and another 25 percent is more
than 40 years old, Puente said in
the meeting.
“The 6 ½ percent rate increase
would generate $20 million,
enough to fund the effort,” Flores
explained.
SAWS has the nation’s best
conservation program, Puente
added. In spite of adding 67 percent
more customers, the water
utility has not increased water
consumption.
SAWS also secured a $35 million
low interest loan from the
Texas Water development Board
to help diversify the water supply.

of water used, resulting in slightly
lower or the same bill for about 93
percent of our residential customers,

ask everyone to pay more for

Sandra Griffin, encargada en la
biblioteca del Memorial, fija su
mirada en el techo elevado con
dos arcos enormes, con sus ventanas
“clerestory”, ventanillas altas
y estrechas, y ve posibilidades –
entre esas, una oportunidad para
mantener vivos los recuerdos de
generaciones pasadas del West
Side para el futuro.
“Queremos celebrar la historia,
cultura y el espíritu del West SSide”,
explicó Griffin. Así es que
nació el proyecto, con la meta de
documentar y preservar la historia
de las mujeres del West Side, en
una manera que podría ser guardada
para el futuro y compartida
por toda la ciudad.

Leadership program, Texas Gov.
Rick Perry announced a $3 million
initiative for veterans and
military to help streamline education
requirements at St. Philip’s
College, one of the colleges of
the Alamo Community College
District.
“This is one of the ways for
Texas to say thank you to our
vets,” Perry said.
Standing with veterans, who are
now students and instructors from
the college, Perry explained the
program and rationale behind it.
“Specifically, the job is to
connect the dots between the
high-quality training our military
offers and college courses and
professional certification standards,
especially in the Allied
Health Care Occupations, such
as physical therapists, X-ray and
pharmacy technicians,” he said.
He explained another goal of
this program was to help take
advantage of that specialized
training quickly, so that vets could
put those skills to work right away
in our communities.
“As Texas’ population grows,
the demand for those essential
skills continues to increase, and
this program will accelerate veterans’
transfer from the military’s
top-quality training environment
into helping Texans,” Perry
added.
According to a press release
from the governor’s office, the
comprehensive strategy includes
money for demonstration grants
in three areas of the state with
high veteran populations - San
Antonio, Houston and Temple-
Killeen – so vets could get the
most from their military experience
and training toward a
college degree or professional
certification.
The Governor introduced State
Sen. Leticia Van de Putte, chair
of the Senate Veteran Affairs and
Military Installations Committee,
as “one of the most powerful
voices in our legislature for the
military.”
Van de Putte extolled the virtues
of the new program, explaining
that it would help this
population of students translate
the high-level military training
they already have into credits,
allowing them to join the workforce
faster.
“Our veterans have been trained
by our nation’s premier employer,
it is common sense to consider
their unique and specialized training
in order to help our veterans
transition from the battlefield to
the workforce as quickly as possible,”
she said.

and explains that the Texas Veteran
Leadership Program allowed

program would do more because
the $3 million veterans’ workforce
initiative bridged a gap.
“Our men and women have
training and skills that can be
translated to well-paying jobs,”
he said. “This initiative will give
our veterans faster employment
opportunities.”
Dr. Adelina Silva, vice chancellor
of St. Philips College, was also
impressed with the program.
“Anything that’s good for our
veterans is good for us,” she
said.
The college is one of the most
diverse in Texas, and more than
80 percent of licensed vocational
nurses are trained there according
to school officials.
St. Philips is also recognized
as a “military-friendly” institution,
a special designation from
the military, awarded annually.
John Westerbeck, coordinator of
Veterans Affairs at the college,
explained that the recognition
is the result of an application
process that must be initiated
every year.
“It’s an annual application
process, and all the colleges in the
district are in the process of applying
again this year,” he said.

Seniors enjoy a FANtastic summer this year

The Project Cool is back in
business this summer providing
low-income seniors with new
18-inch electric box fans. Starting
June 1 until September 17, residents
can donate fans at participating
fire stations for seniors in
need of relief from high summer
temperatures.
“Last year we had multiple
days with more than 100 degree
weather,” said Mayor Julian
Castro at the 2010 Project Cool
Kick-off on Wednesday. “This
summer is expected to be hot
again and we want to make sure
that every single senior citizen
that needs a fan to keep cool this
summer has one.”
Project Cool is a collaborative
initiative designed to alleviate
health risks to seniors, 60 years
and older, by providing them with
a new box fan. “Health dangers
posed by heat are real and potentially
deadly,” said Dr. George M.
Rapier III, Chairman and CEO of
WellMed Management Inc. “At
WellMed we focus on prevention.
Project Cool is preventing heatrelated
deaths by implementing
this life-saving program.”
Last year the organization
collected and distributed more
than 10,000 fans to vulnerable
seniors. The effort, spearheaded
by the San Antonio Department
of Community Initiatives and the
San Antonio Fire Department, has
provided more than 62,000 fans to
seniors in San Antonio and Bexar
County in the past 13 years.
“A lot of seniors within the
community, in particular in Dis-
trict 5, I know would really benefit
from these fans due to the
hot summers that we have here
in San Antonio,” stated District
5 Councilman David Medina.
“We’ve seen the history of it and
we want to be proactive of it to
see that our seniors or citizens in
general do have fans so we can
avoid any health conditions or
problems due to the heat.”
The San Antonio Metropolitan
Health District also provides fan
recipients with information on
how to avoid heat related illnesses
and how best to use the fans
safely. “This is a truly very important
effort in terms of prevention,”
said Dr. Fernando Guerra,
director of health at Metro Health.
“Every year we have reported to
us heat-related injuries and even
deaths, not just in the senior community
but also in young infants
whose body temperatures are
not easily regulated. It’s another
very important consideration for
our community that parents with
young infants and children need
to take the appropriate precautions
to protect them.”
This year CPS Energy kicked
off an employee fan drive raising
$28,000 for Project Cool. “Our
employees really came through
this year,” stated Paula Gold-
Williams, executive vice president
and chief financial officer
of CPS Energy. “At CPS Energy
our core purpose is benefiting
the community by improving the
quality of life for the people we
serve. For that reason we’ll be
able to take these funds and purchase
over 2,000 fans for seniors
in need.”
CPS Energy not only encourages
seniors, but the entire community
to turn on house fans. “It
actually helps us save on energy,
and makes our homes cooler,”
explained Gold-Williams. “In fact
we have done studies and fans can
lower temperatures about four
degrees, and it only costs about a
penny per hour to run.”
In addition, The WellMed
Charitable Foundation pledged
to donate $10,000 to Project Cool
and will be collecting fans at their
21 clinics. “This is the second
year we’ve joined as a partner to
the program and we know that
nationally more seniors will die
from heat-related incidents than
die from floods, tornadoes and
earthquakes combined,” said
Carol Zurniel, vice president of
WellMed and executive director
of WellMed Charitable Foundation.
Zurniel added that seniors tend
to become isolated in their own
homes and encouraged them to
take advantage of the senior centers
operated by the City of San
Antonio, such as the brand new
District 5 Senior Multiservice
Center. “It’s a free meal, free
medical screenings provided by
WellMed and free computer
classes and free aerobics and fitness
room,” explained District 5
Councilman David Medina.
The city opened its 11,000
square-foot facility on April 9, located
inside City Council District
5 at 2701 S. Presa Street. “These
are great places to get out of the
heat, get some activity, get a hot
lunch and really socialize with
other seniors,” stated Zurniel.
“It’s a great way to spend the
summer.”

Charitable Foundation, the San
Antonio Metropolitan Health
District, Catholic Charities, CPS
Energy, Society of St. Vincent
de Paul, Bexar County Sheriff’s

Celebración de Memorial Day en Fort Sam Houston

La ceremonia habitual de Memorial
Day en el cementerio de
Fort San Houston tuvo la partici-
pación de 47 instituciones civiles
y militares que dieron lucimiento
al acto cívico en torno al Army,
Navy, Air Force, Marines y Coast
Guard, para honrar la memoria
de los soldados norteamericanos
caídos en los diferentes escenarios
bélicos en que se ha
visto involucrado este país. Los
niños y jóvenes de Boy Scouts
of America dieron un toque de
frescura a la festividad estando al
lado de veteranos de guerra como
Vietnam y otras más recientes
Participaron entre otras organizaciones
Knights of Columbus,
Marine Corps League, Vietnam
Veterans of America, Jewish War
Veterans, Pearl Harbor Survivors
Association, China Burma, India
Veterans Association y Disabled
American Veterans Association
entre otras diversas organizaciones.
Condado y Ciudad añaden canchas al ACYSO
Con el primer disparo a la portería, oficiales del Condado de Bexar, Ciudad de San Antonio y de Alamo City Youth Soccer Organization (ACYSO), dieron por iniciados los trabajos de cinco canchas

Los versos estaban mal compuestos,
pero de todos modos,
eran versos. Es difícil lograr la
rima y la cadencia de un Rubén
Darío o de un Guillermo Valencia.
Los versos decían así: “No
debiste matar de noche / ni debiste
matar de día. / Ahora debo
sentenciarte / a prisión por toda
tu vida. / Mataste a tu dulce esposa,
/ que tanto amor te tenía. /
Ahora te han castigado: / ¡era lo
que merecías!”
Los versos los compuso el
juez Robert Fitzgerald para condenar
a cadena perpetua a David
Schoenecker, de cincuenta y un
años de edad. Schoenecker había
matado a su esposa. Es la primera
sentencia en verso que se
conozca.
Parece que el criminal había
escrito también unos versos cuando
mató a su esposa. Y aun
después de oír la sentencia, escribió
una cuarteta más: “Cuando
yo escribí mis versos, / me
encontraba muy enfermo. / Cuando
el juez escribió los suyos, /
no sufría de mal alguno.”
No tomar uno en serio sus
ofensas, no sentirse avergonzado
de sus agravios, no sentir
remordimiento ante el daño que
uno provoca, es añadirle mal al
mal. Ponerle nombres bonitos a
las cosas feas no las mejora en
nada. Y escribir versos para constatar
un asesinato no cambia en
nada el horrendo acto. Incluso,
los versos del juez, de amargo
buen humor, no alivian tampoco
la sentencia. Con todo y versos,
el hombre habría de pasar el resto
de su vida en la cárcel.
No hay que prodigar elogios al
delito. No hay que cantarle loas a
la muerte. No hay que pronunciar
alabanzas al pecado. Algunos
quieren hablarle con sarcasmo a
la vida y proferir insultos al destino,
pero no son más que pobres
votos, tus intenciones, tus anhelos.
Ve por ella, nos espera, ‘ella
siempre espera’, es parte de su
ternura para ti.
Señorea mientras habites en el
reino, ten confianza, te engrandeceré.
Deja tu carga en Mí. Háblame,
te haré saber y entender.
Agradece su ardua labor,
vuelve al matrimonio, comprométete,
y perdona.
Comunícate, ¡Inténtalo genuinamente
de nuevo!

nada aminoran el crimen.
Las palabras del rey David,
confrontado por su pecado de tomar
como mujer a Betsabé, esposa
del soldado Urías, y de enviar
a Urías al frente de batalla para
que lo mataran, no eran palabras
de un rey arrogante. Eran las
de un pecador contrito y humillado.
“Ten compasión de mí, oh
Dios, conforme a tu gran amor....
Crea en mí, oh Dios, un corazón
limpio, y renueva la firmeza de
mi espíritu” (Salmo 51:1,10).
Y cuando Cristo quiso enseñarnos
cómo debe un malhechor
responder ante sus delitos, lo hizo
poniendo una oración en labios
de un desgraciado recaudador de
impuestos. Las palabras son éstas:
“¡Oh Dios, ten compasión de mí,
que soy pecador!” (Lucas 18:13).
No miremos con impudencia
nuestro pecado. No hay ni gracia
ni perdón para el que no confiesa
su mal. Reconozcamos nuestra
rebeldía, admitamos nuestra indocilidad,
confesemos nuestro
pecado, y Dios en un instante nos
perdonará y nos limpiará de toda
maldad.

“Tengo once años y mi hermana
doce. Hace más de tres años
mi papá y mi mamá pelean. Ellos
se pelean por bobadas, [porque
se le chorrea el] agua o [porque]
cuando plancha le queda una arruga.
Yo me siento mal que mi
papá insulte a mi mamá, y no
sé cómo decirles a ellos que no
peleen por bobadas.”
“Quiero [pedirles] que me den
un consejo para que [ellos] no
peleen.”
Este es el consejo que le dio

Me entristeció mucho enterarme
de tu situación. Yo tuve el
mismo problema a la edad que
tienes tú. Mis padres peleaban
todo el tiempo. A veces gritaban
y eran tan violentos que los
vecinos llamaban a la policía. Al
fin se divorciaron, y mi mamá
volvió a casarse. Pero no pasó
mucho tiempo antes de que mi
mamá comenzara a pelear con
mi padrastro.
¡Cuánto deseaba que dejaran
de pelear! Lo intenté todo. Yo les
rogaba que no pelearan más, pero
nada cambiaba. No había nada
en absoluto que yo pudiera hacer
para que mejorara la situación,
así que traté de escapar leyendo
un libro tras otro. Me enfrascaba
en las historias de los personajes
para no tener que pensar en mi
propia y triste realidad.
Muchos jóvenes como tú han
encontrado diferentes vías de escape.
Algunas de esas vías son
positivas, mientras que otras son
muy negativas y peligrosas. Las
drogas y el alcohol son maneras
comunes de escapar que sólo
dan como resultado problemas
peores. Las relaciones con personas
que no nos convienen también
pueden ser vías de escape,
pero a la vez son muy peligrosas.
Como respuesta a tu pregunta,
siento mucho decirte que no hay
ninguna forma de lograr que tus
padres dejen de pelear. Por el
contrario, debes aceptar que no
tienes poder alguno sobre ellos.
Lo único que puedes hacer
es cambiar tú misma. Como hice
yo, puedes determinar que algún
día formarás un hogar mejor para
tus propios hijos. Y puedes decidir
que no te casarás con ningún
hombre a menos que te muestre
respeto en todos los sentidos.
Lo mejor que puedes hacer es
refugiarte en un lugar apartado
dentro de la casa o del patio.
Ve allí cada vez que comiencen
los pleitos. Consíguete tapones
para los oídos o audífonos para
escuchar música, y úsalos para
no tener que oír el griterío. Aprovecha
el tiempo para estudiar o
leer, o escribir tus pensamientos
en un diario.
Recuerda que tienes a un Padre
celestial que te ama mucho.
Él puede darte la paz que necesitas
para soportar esos momentos
difíciles en tu hogar. Habla con
Dios, y pídele en oración que te
ayude y que te acompañe. A mí
eso me dio resultado, y sé que te
dará resultado a ti también.
Te acompañamos en tu tristeza,
con la esperanza de que tengas
un futuro mejor,
Dedicated Sister celebrates
decades of service

Sister Elia Rosas of the Sisters
of Charity of the Incarnate Word,
along with several others, celebrated
50 to 75 years of service
with a grand Jubilee Celebration.
Sister Elia, originally from
Kerrville, has been living a faithbased
life since she was a young
child. Her mother passed away
early in her life and her father
continued to instill faith and education
in Sister Elia and her siblings
as their mother wished.
Sister Elia and her sister were
placed under the care of the sisters
of St. Joseph’s and St. Peter’s
home. They stayed until
they graduated from high school.
After graduating from Incarnate
Word High School in 1943,
Sister Elia began to feel the calling
to serve the Lord.
The desire to become a sister
of Charity of the Incarnate Word
arose from the love she had for
the nuns that took care of her.
They educated her and cared for
her and her siblings when they
were sick.
After receiving her Bachelor’s
Degree in Nursing from
the Santa Rosa School of Nursing
in three years, Sister Elia
worked for one year, and then

of Charity of the Incarnate

entered the Incarnate Word
Convent in 1947.
Sister Elia spent the first three
years preparing for her vows
and laying the foundation for
her life of service to the Lord.
Sister Elia yearned to become
a good sister and a missionary.
In 1950, she made her first vows
of poverty, chastity, and obedience,
and was given the name
Sister Roderick. After Vatican
II, Sister Elia returned to her
name given in Baptism.
She was sent to Santa Rosa
Hospital to work begin her
work as a missionary. Later she
was transferred to San Angelo,
then Spohn Hospital in Corpus
Christi, where she worked for 11
years.
In 1966, Sister Elia volunteered
to go to Chimbote, Peru
to help with their first mission.
She stayed there for two years.
During the mission, she witnessed
first-hand extreme poverty,
malnutrition, and illness.
Sister Elia’s next stop was
the St. Louis province, where
she worked for eight years.
After receiving permission
she earned her Master’s in
Nursing from Marquette University
in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
Later, in 1986, she earned a
second Master’s in Theological
Studies at the Oblate School of
Theology.
Next, Sister Elia worked in
Paris, Texas. She returned to
San Antonio, where she taught
at Incarnate Word College (now
the University of the Incarnate
Word) for two years.
Sister Elia had to stop teaching
when she began experiencing
hearing loss, however, she
found joy doing Campus Ministry
at Texas A&I (now Texas
A&M), where she worked for
11 years.
At 65 years of age Sister
Elia traveled to Kingsville and
worked as the Director of Religious
Education at St. Gertrude
Church for three years.
She also did some family
ministry helping family members
who were ill. She did that
for ten years.
By 2006, Sister Elia returned
to Peru, to volunteer at a hospice
founded by a fellow sister.
At the age of 78, she moved
into the retirement community,
where she still lives today.
She returned to Peru to help
out at the International Novitiate
helping to teach young
women who are preparing to
make their vows.
Sister Elia continues to do
volunteer work at Christus Santa
Rosa Hospital and at the Village
of the Incarnate Word.
The Jubilee Celebration celebrated
her 60 years of service
in ministry.
“You will never regret it. You
will learn to serve Him and what
to do,” Sister Elia says about
answering the call to become a
sister.
Sister Elia began preparing
for the Jubilee a year in advance
by making a 30-day retreat at
Sarita’s House of Prayer. There
she did a lot of prayer and reflection
especially for the family
and friends that she invited
to the Jubilee.
The Jubilee Celebration was
held Saturday, May 29, on the
campus of the University of
the Incarnate Word. Festivities
included a Eucharistic Liturgy
followed by a lunch for the sisters,
family and friends.Later in
the evening a dinner was held
for the Jubilarians and the immediate
family.
When reflecting over the celebration,
Sister Elia beams with joy
and said, “It was a perfect day.”
To those young women who
are interested in answering the
call to become a sister, Sister
Elia says, “If you have love
for Jesus and want to sacrifice,
there is nothing better you can
do.”

Encourage your teen
to get vaccinated

Being vaccinated is more important
than ever, and basketball
Hall of Famer Bob Lanier, along
with San Antonio Silver Stars
guard and Vaccines for Teens
spokesperson Helen Darling,
teamed up with NBA Cares and
the Society for Adolescent Health
and Medicine (SAHM) to bring
Vaccines for Teens to the San
Antonio community.
The national awareness campaign
will educate teens and their
parents about the importance
of vaccination against serious
and potentially life-threatening
diseases.
Lanier and Darling appeared
at the Martin Luther King Academy
to urge parents of preteens
and teens to discuss adolescent
vaccinations with their family
physicians. “We care about the
community,” said Darling. “Because
these kids look up to us,
it’s our responsibility to reach
out to them.”
Local community leaders also
support the recommendations of
Centers for Disease Control and
Prevention (CDC), which suggest
vaccination for preteens and
teens against influenza, including
seasonal strains and the pandemic
influenza A (H1N1) virus, meningococcal
disease, whooping
cough (pertussis) and human
papillomavirus (HPV).
Helping protect young people
in the San Antonio area and
preventing life-threatening complications
of these diseases is the
right thing to do, they say.
Immunization rates for all three
diseases among preteens and
teens remain alarmingly low in
Bexar County, where less than
half of those between the ages of
13 and 17 years are vaccinated
against meningococcal disease
and whooping cough.
“Vaccination can help teens
grow into healthy adults,” explained
Darling. “In basketball,
the best offense is a good defense
and the same holds true for protecting
teen health.”
John Kach remembers every
day of his traumatic experience
with meningitis. “What started
out with a cough and flu ended
up in six months of coma and millions
of dollars in medical bills,”
he stated. “Doctors thought I was
going to die –my organs were
shutting down, my fingers and
legs had to be amputated and now
every morning I wake up having
to put my prosthetic legs on.”
But despite his painful and
traumatic experience, Kach feels
fortunate to be alive. “I live for a
reason,” he said. “I could’ve had
brain damage, I could’ve been
blind, I could’ve died, but I didn’t
and I feel very lucky.”
Immunization is critically important
for adolescents because
they are at risk for serious and
potentially life-threatening diseases.
“People don’t realize how
quickly it can affect you,” stated
Kach. “The vaccine is quick, easy
and virtually painless.”
He noted how important it is to
be informed of the potential risks.
“I didn’t educate myself and I’m
still paying for it today.”
Meningococcal disease and
whooping cough affect people in
the area every year. In 2008, 10
cases of meningococcal disease
and 55 cases of whooping cough
were reported in Bexar County.
This disease spreads easily from
person to person by sharing water
bottles, eating utensils or even
living in close quarters at camp.
To help protect adolescents,
the Texas Department of State
Health Services requires that students
entering seventh grade have
their meningococcal meningitis
vaccine and one booster dose of
tetanus, diphtheria, and acellular
pertussis (Tdap) vaccine.
The moment parents prepare
to send their children back to
school in the fall, they should also
prepare to have their families immunized
against influenza as soon
as the vaccine is available.
Adolescent immunization in
Texas is a very important community
health issue. Between
67,565 and 270,261 San Antonio
residents suffer from influenza
annually, yet immunization rates
drop every year.
“With teens in such close contact
in classrooms and on school
sports teams, these infectious diseases
can spread easily from student
to student,” said Dr. Manuel
Angel Oscós-Sánchez, president
of the Texas Regional Chapter of
the Society for Adolescent Health
and Medicine. “Vaccination is a
safe and effective way to help
teens stay protected, yet immunization
rates remain low among
adolescents.”

vaccine-preventable diseases, and
the benefits of vaccination, by visiting

en espacios públicos repartidos

dispares para crear una especie de
poema de la ciudad”, aseguran los
organizadores, que animan a los
participantes en esta iniciativa a
que, una vez utilizadas, se intercambien
entre sí las llaves.
La idea ha sido promocionada
por el artista estadounidense Paul
Ramírez Jonas, originario de

community gardens throughout
South Texas. They will select
five or six projects in this round
of funding, which could help
with seed money up to $7000,
but their help and advice is free
for all community gardens that
join the network.
There are five requirements
to be eligible: the site must be
located in San Antonio, the garden
must have five core members
on the application who are not
related (or reside at the same address),
the land must be available
to use for five years, it must be
within walking distance of the
participants and have on-site access
to water.

gardens manager for GSA at

angela@greespacealliance.org,
to submit an interest form no
later than June 11.
“The whole purpose of the
community garden network is
to give everyone access to resources
and supplies,” Hartsell
explained.
Green Spaces Alliance has
three programs to promote their
mission, which is to keep more
of South Texas green. Besides
land conservation efforts and
educational programs, they hope
to establish more green spaces
for public enjoyment by helping
groups of neighbors or nonprofits
create community gardens.
Such gardens provide all kinds
of benefits for the participants.
Besides the tangible rewards of
growing delicious, healthy food,
the gardeners learn about the environments,
healthy eating, and
establish a an exercise routine.
The green spaces also provide
a safe place for children to play
and learn about nature.
Kauffman understands those
benefits and looks forward to
the adventure for the residents
of Palacio del Sol because not
only will it be a source of joy, it
will teach them about nutrition
and provide healthy physical
activity, as well.

EFE - La jueza Sonia Sotomayor,
la única hispana en el
Tribunal Supremo de EEUU,
regresó a su antiguo hogar en El
Bronx para participar en la ceremonia
en la que el complejo de
viviendas de interés social donde
creció fue bautizado con su nombre.
Un remozado complejo de
viviendas, que consta de 28 edificios
con 1,497 apartamentos
y cerca de 3,500 residentes, recibió
hoy a Sotomayor, su hija
predilecta, quien antes del acto,
presidido por el alcalde Michael
Bloomberg, visitó su antigua
escuela elemental, donde habló
con los estudiantes.
Sotomayor, de origen puertorriqueño,
aseguró a los estudiantes
que ella también fue
niña, “no diferente a lo que son
ustedes” que quería ser abogada,
pero nunca soñó que llegaría al
Tribunal Supremo, el más alto
foro judicial del país.
Incluso les confesó que no
era buena para el baile en su infancia,
algo que asegura ya sobrepasó.
“La historia de la jueza Sotomayor
es única, pero, al igual
que muchas otras, comenzó en
un proyecto de viviendas interés

César Márquez, portavoz del
Movimiento Ciudadano por la
Justicia “5 de Junio”, que reúne
a algunas familias afectadas, dijo
a Efe que la valoración que hace
este grupo de los avances ocurridos
hasta la fecha es “muy mala”
y “poco acorde a lo que debiera
ser la exigencia de justicia que
hay por parte de una comunidad”.
El siniestro ocurrió el 5 de
junio de 2009 en Hermosillo,
la capital de Sonora, cuando un
incendio que se había producido
en una bodega de la Secretaría de
Hacienda estatal se extendió a la
aledaña guardería ABC, y por el
humo murieron 44 menores y, en
los días siguientes, cinco más.
Las investigaciones de los últimos
meses revelaron graves
deficiencias en las instalaciones,
un diseño inadecuado en las
puertas de emergencia, falta de
extintores, detectores de humo
defectuosos y un plafón elaborado
con materiales inflamables,

que estuvo acompañado en
la ceremonia por el presidente
de El Bronx, Rubén Díaz, entre

y para niñas y niños en todo el
país”, aseguró el alcalde, quien
además charló durante la ceremonia
con la congresista Nydia
Velázquez, el senador Charles

social, John B. Rhea.
Rhea destacó por su parte que
Sotomayor, de 54 años, ha demostrado
que crecer en viviendas
públicas no limita las posibilidades
de triunfo.
“Ella es una buena estrella
brillante que ha servido de ejemplo
para otras estrellitas del futuro
que vendrán de Bronxdale”,
afirmó Rhea en español.
La congresista Velázquez recordó
que Sotomayor nunca ha
olvidado su origen.
Sotomayor, que el pasado 8
de agosto se convirtió en la jueza
111 del Tribunal Supremo y
la tercera mujer en ocupar ese
asiento, agradeció que el complejo
de viviendas donde creció
junto a su madre Celina y hermano
Juan, lleve ahora su nombre.
“Fue la gente que vivió aquí la
que transformó estos edificios en
una comunidad, se apoyaron mutuamente
y ayudaron a la próxima
generación a crecer”, dijo a
la vez que exhortó a los residentes
del complejo de viviendas a
que mantengan ese compromiso
“para que otras Sonias alcancen
su sueño”.
La agenda de Sotomayor en
Nueva York incluye ofrecer un
discurso en el Colegio Hostos,
también en El Bronx y fundado
en 1968, de donde su madre Celina
se graduó de enfermera en
1970, mientras criaba a sus hijos.
Familias exigen justicia a un año de la muerte
de 49 niños en una guardería mexicana
entre otras carencias.
El centro, concesionado a particulares
por el Instituto Mexicano
del Seguro Social (IMSS),
pertenecía a Marcia Matilde Altagracia
Gómez del Campo, Sandra
Lucía Téllez, esposas de dos
funcionarios de Sonora, a Antonio
Salido Suárez y Gildardo
Francisco Urquídez, ex secretario
de finanzas del Partido Revolucionario
Institucional (PRI).
“Los socios de la estancia
jamás han sido aprehendidos y
llevados a prisión por nada. Todo
el tiempo han tenido la posibilidad
de estar libres, primero amparados,
después (...) en libertad
bajo fianza, que es como están
actualmente”, explicó Márquez,
quien perdió a “Yeye”, un niño
de dos años y nueve meses, aquel
día.
Las decenas de familias afectadas
han logrado hasta ahora
que los 5 de junio sean declarados
días de luto nacional y un
apoyo sanitario vitalicio a los
pequeños que sobrevivieron a la
tragedia, pero insisten en que el
caso no debe quedar impune.
El Movimiento “5 de Junio”,
que forman 20 del total de familias
afectadas, quiere que se
analice a fondo la “corrupción,
complicidad” y “tráfico de influencias”
en el caso y que sea
recalificado el cargo contra los
presuntos responsables como
“homicidio doloso”, no “culposo”,
como ha sucedido hasta
ahora, señala Márquez.
“El hecho de que sean enjuiciados
por delitos no graves
sigue siendo para nosotros una
ofensa. Es un agravio grandísimo
para la memoria de nuestros
niños”, asegura.
Hasta ahora el Gobierno mexicano
únicamente ha inhabilitado
por 20 años a tres funcionarios
del IMSS, entre ellos el delegado
de la institución en Sonora, Arturo
Leyva Lizárraga, y prohibido
por cinco años a los dueños de la
empresa operadora de esa guardería
contratar con el estado.
Las responsabilidades podrían
incluso llegar hasta lo más alto,
ya que la Suprema Corte de
Justicia de la Nación mexicana
(SCJN) ha tomado el caso.
En marzo pasado, el máximo
órgano jurisdiccional mexicano
determinó que el siniestro fue
consecuencia del “desorden generalizado”
en las guarderías y los
sistemas de control del IMSS.
Ayer, el magistrado de la
SCJN Arturo Zaldívar presentó
un dictamen que será analizado
este mismo mes donde se responsabiliza
al entonces director
general del IMSS y actual secretario
(ministro) de Comunicaciones,
Juan Molinar Horcasitas; a
su sucesor, Daniel Karam, y al
ex gobernador de Sonora Eduardo
Bours, por los hechos.
El magistrado cree que hubo
“graves violaciones de garantías
individuales (derechos humanos)”
de las víctimas y sus familias
por parte de las autoridades
en ese análisis preliminar.
Mañana, en 31 ciudades de
21 estados de México habrá actos
de apoyo y solidaridad con
los padres convocados por el
Movimiento “5 de Junio” bajo
el lema “Justicia ya” y “Basta de
impunidad”.
Márquez señala que esa será
la demanda principal de una jornada
que llega teñida de cierto
escepticismo entre los llamados
a que se haga justicia.
“En cualquier otra sociedad o
país democrático (...) ya hubieran
caído muchísimas personas,
hasta cabezas de gobernadores si
no es que del mismo presidente”,
concluye Márquez.

• 1/4 red onion
• 1 clove garlic
STEP 1: Dice the tomatoes,
jalapeno, onion, garlic and
cilantro and place them in a
bowl. Dice the jalapeno, onion,
garlic and cilantro very finely
while leaving the tomato in
larger chunks (approximately
1/2 inch square). Dice the avo-

Protect your child
against online dangers

As a parent you lock your
doors and windows to keep the
“bad” people away from your
children. But in the age of cyberspace,
the “bad” people can get
into your home every time your
child connects to the internet.
One in four U.S. teen girls
report they met strangers off
the internet. One in seven boys
admitted they did as well. While
most of these “internet friends”
turn out to be another teen or
preteen, that’s not always the
case. Unfortunately, children are
now dying at the hands of their
internet child molesters and not
all sexual exploitation of children
occur offline.
Summer used to mean playing
outside all day with friends and
hanging out with the neighborhood
gang until the sun went
down. A parent’s main concern
was where their kids physically
were and who they were hanging
out with.
“In the 21st century, the playgrounds
are digital,” explained
Jamie Leasure, co-founder of
Pandora Corp. “The physical
concerns of yesterday need to be
expressed for the internet today:
who is your child hanging out
with and what websites are they
visiting?”
Being out of school means
children will be spending more
time online, as they sit at home.
It also means an increase in two
prevalent online threats: sexual
predators and cyber-bullies.
Now, parents have a quick and
easy way to see exactly what
their kids are doing and where
they are spending their time
online.
“It’s a solution that will effectively
keep kids safe on the internet
while the parent is outside the
home,” said Leasure. “Ideally,
it’s going to be something that
removes any doubt and shows
the parent exactly what their
child is doing, while also being
something they can check from
work.”
PC Pandora is computer monitoring
software that records all
activity on the computer. Screen
snapshots that can be viewed
with a DVD-like playback function
give PC owners the ability
to see exactly what happened
on their computer. The program
also creates text-based logs of
all emails sent and received,
instant messenger conversations,
websites visited, programs
used, peer-to-peer activity and
keystrokes.
“The key to real internet safety
is knowledge,” say Leasure.
“You have to know what your
kids are doing in order to keep
them safe. Filters are easy to
get around and provide a false
sense of security, but monitoring
internet activity with PC Pandora
allows you to see absolutely everything
that happens. If your
child is talking to strangers and
forming relationships online,
you will see it; if your child is
involved in cyber-bullying, as
victim or bully, you will see it.”
For parents that have to leave
the kids at home this summer and
go to work, PC Pandora comes

which sends email updates to
parents at specified intervals.
“It’s an indispensable tool
for every working parent,” said
Leasure. “IRIS allows them to
monitor their child’s online behavior

to know what your kids are doing
online,” concluded Leasure.
“Where they are going and who
they are talking to is key, especially
while they’re home alone
all day.”
But let’s face it, times are
tough. If you’re not in the financial
position to be purchasing
computer monitoring software,
here are a few tips to help your
child stay away from the dangers
that lurk in your computer:
1. Talk to them. Most youngsters
are unaware of how to protect
themselves from online dangers.
They think of the internet as
a friendly place where they can
email their friends and look up
information for their homework.
Children need specific information
and guidelines so they know
what to do if they find themselves
in a questionable situation.
2. Teach them to just say no.
Teach your children to say “no”
to instant messages from strangers.
Teach them not to open
emails from people they don’t
know. Teach them not to follow
links to websites if they don’t
know what’s on the other end of
the link.
3. Don’t send your children
out on the internet alone. Spending
time navigating together is a
good way for parents to connect
with their children’s world and
learn more about their interests.
While you’re out there with them
you can teach them how to avoid
dangerous situations.
4. Know their passwords and
screen names. Always know
what websites and chat rooms
your children are visiting and
who is sending them email.
5. Don’t let them give out a
password. Some individuals create
email addresses in chat rooms
designed for adolescent children.
They write to those children
telling them that they have won
a contest and ask for their passwords.
They then log onto the
children’s email accounts and use
them to disseminate pornography
or solicit money through illegal
schemes. Your child’s email address
is the first place authorities
look for answers about the illegal
activity.
6. Don’t let them give out their
name, address or any personal
information. This may seem obvious,
but children frequently tell
people their names or what town
they live in without thinking.
7. Keep an eye on them. Online
relationships develop quickly.
Websites can be accessed with
the click of a mouse. It’s a bad
idea to let your child spend unsupervised
hours on the internet
until you are absolutely sure they
know how to protect themselves.
Even then, it’s a good idea to
check on what they’re doing.
8. Teach them to never agree
to a face-to-face meeting with
someone that they met online.
Teach them to tell you immediately
if someone suggests a meeting
or asks for their telephone
number.
9. Monitor your child’s computer.
Periodically, check the
web filter logs on the computers,
making sure you know where
they’re navigating and what
they’re doing.
10. No private computers. If
they absolutely have to have
their own computers, make sure
they’re in a public location,
where you can easily watch over.
The family room or the office is
where they should be kept. That
way, they will not feel as if they
have an opportunity to slip one
past you.
Carver Academy goes virtual

David and Valerie Robinson’s
vision to give San Antonio kids
a solid educational foundation
is expanding, now, it has gone
virtual.
The Carver Academy (TCA)
has been successful since initially
opening its doors for the
first 60 students on September
17, 2001.
Students enrolled at TCA
have been consistently performing
in the top ten percentile
of standardized testing. So far
there have been four graduating
classes.
Although TCA has proven
itself to be a successful learning
institution, San Antonio
Spurs veteran and founder of
The Carver Academy, David
Robinson’s, said his vision is
not complete.
On June 2, 2010 David Robinson
and Carver Academy board
members announced the creation
of The David Robinson Virtual
Academy. It will operate as a
partnership with TCA.
This online academy offers
the same quality education and
access to teachers as physically
attending TCA. The private,
online academy will serve students
in grades K-12 from all
around the country and provide
a fully accredited (SAIS/SACS)
curriculum.
Students of the Virtual Academy
also have access to virtual
classrooms, school book fairs,
and science labs, just like the
students who attend the TCA
campus.
Both the TCA and The David
Robinson Virtual Academy
will stress the five pillars utilized
by The Carver Academyleadership,
discipline, initiative,
integrity and service.
While TCA and The Virtual
Academy will be operating as
two separate academies, they
will work together on certain
activities such as science fairs
and creating a library that both
schools can use.
Registration for The Virtual
Academy began June 2, and runs
until October 1. The first day of
virtual school is August 23.
The Virtual Academy’s goal
is to enroll 300 students to start,
and eventually reach 5,000
students.
The total tuition for a K-8th
Grade is $6,540 a year, with a $2,
000 deposit prior to enrollment.
The total tuition for a High
School Student is $ 7,440 with
a $2,000 deposit prior to enrollment.
According Robinson and TCA
board members, The David Robinson
Virtual Academy is the
future of education. The idea
began about two years ago.
The Head of the TCA, Brenda
Murphy, says that she gets calls
often inquiring when a Carver
Academy would be built in their
area.
“This is a great answer for a lot
of families. There are families
that for one reason or another
are very transitory. They want to
live in a place and spend time together
as a family, this is a great
opportunity for them to go to a
great school, get an accredited
education, accelerate as fast or
as far as they want to go an be a
part of a community, The Carver
Academy,” said Robinson.
This unique type of education
allows for students to experience
TCA even though they are not
physically there.
With a virtual school we can
virtually be in every home,” said
Brenda Murphy.
The David Robinson Virtual
Academy is breaking down walls
of economics, gender and racial
barriers.
“We have 120 students enrolled
today and each one will
make a difference, “said Harvey
Major, TCA board member.
The Carver Academy has
really made a difference in the
lives of these students w have
come through these classrooms
and The David Robinson Virtual
Academy is bound to do
the same.
We have seen what these kids
are capable of,” said Robinson.
As The David Robinson Virtual
Academy continues to go
evolve, who knows what the next
step in the education world is?
In the words of George Washington
Carver, “Where there is
no vision there is not hope.”

a $420 mini-grant to Southwest
ISD’s Communities in Schools

program. SAWS has awarded
more than $155,000 in grant
funding since 2002.
“With grants like this, SAWS
and the City help expand science
education for our students
by providing an opportunity to
study outside of the classroom,”
said San Antonio City Councilman
Philip Cortez. “Learning
about environmental and water
issues through hands-on activities
encourages our students to
become better stewards of our
environment.”
Fifty middle school students
from the Southwest ISD will take
part in a field trip to Mitchell
Lake Audubon Center this summer.
Students will participate in
hands-on activities relating to
ecology, scientific observation,
resource management and citizenship.
Through the program,
the sponsors hope the students
become more environmentally
aware, and encourage these first
generation college students to
consider careers involving environmental
science.
“SAWS educational grant program
allows students and teachers
to take part in projects they
might not otherwise be able to
afford,” said Greg Flores, SAWS
Vice President, Public Affairs.
“We are pleased to offer grants
that encourage San Antonio
students to become smart water
stewards.”
SAWS mini-grant program
funds projects that educate prekindergarten
through 12th grade
students on the topics of water
quality, water conservation, environmental
awareness and pollution
prevention. Any organization
within the SAWS service
area is eligible to apply for the
grants, and potential projects
can range from a school-wide
project on water issues to educational
field trips for a classroom
or grade level.
The mini-grant program is
funded by the Water Quality and
Environmental Education and Enforcement
Account, created by the
City Council to hold enforcement
penalties collected by SAWS. Per
city ordinance, some of the funds
in this account are to educate students
on water issues. For more information
