Brand new homes given to Wounded Warriors

Brown along with their families
were given the keys to brand new
homes Wednesday, as part of the
collaboration between H-E-B’s
Tournament of Champions and
Operation Finally Home.
Each house gifted to the soldiers
is mortgage-free, fully furnished
and stocked with food. H-E-B
volunteers, Pulte Homes representatives
and neighbors lined
the streets, waving American
flags and cheering as the families
arrived.
The homes were presented by
Operation Finally Home Founder,
Dan Wallrath, Special Advisory
Board Member, Retired Lt. Gen.
Rick Lynch, and H-E-B’s Group
Vice President of Public Affairs
Afghanistan.

Padres de familia, miembros de
la comunidad, maestros y oficiales
de la ciudad de San Antonio
se reunieron con el fin de discutir
nuevos proyectos para proporcionar
acceso a una mejor educación
para todos los niños de preescolar.
Dentro de los proyectos se incluye
la participación del ya conocido
personaje de niños “Pocoyo”.
La junta se llevó a cabo el
pasado miércoles, en la escuela
Tynan Early Childhood Center,
lugar en donde se desarrollará el
primer Centro Educativo.
“Se eligió la ciudad de San
Antonio para comenzar este programa,
pero primero lo haremos
en la escuela Tynan, y después
será expandido a otras zonas
de la ciudad”, expresó Greene, El propósito es que con el personaje Pocoyo, reconocido internacionalmente, los pequeños desarrollen

encontró con un par de periódicos,
entre ellos el U.S. News & World
Report.
“En aquel periódico leí una
nota que se llamaba Hispanics
on the Rise, en donde el alcalde
de San Antonio en ese entonces,
Henry Cisneros, mencionaba que
en el 2010 la minoría más grande
serían los hispanos”, recordó con
lágrimas.
Mientras tanto, en New
Braunfels – también en los años
ochenta – sucedió un grave
incidente que involucraba a un
soldado anglosajón. El soldado
había manejado bajo la influencia
del alcohol y había acabado con
la vida de algunas personas que
resultaron ser hispanas.
“Recuerdo que esa noticia
estuvo presente a nivel mundial
porque había surgido el conflicto
de que al soldado no lo habían
castigado. Solo había recibido
libertad condicional”, explicó.
De acuerdo a Chapa Jr. esa
habría sido una de las noticias más
fuertes de la época, ya que se hacía
notar la diferencia de derechos
entre ambos grupos sociales.
Cuando el ahora servidor público
se dio cuenta del alboroto
que había en el país, decidió que
finalizaría sus estudios en psicología
en Alemania y regresaría
a su país con el objetivo de convertirse
en concejal del Distrito 1
de New Braunfels.
“Regresé a New Braunfels,
lugar en donde nací y crecí.

Comenzó su carrera en Alemania
en 1980 sirviendo al ejército
de los Estados Unidos. Después,
fungió como concejal del Distrito
1 en New Braunfels.
Y ya con una experiencia de
muchos años de servicio público
llegó a San Antonio para continuar
su trabajo por las personas.
Ahora Ramón Chapa Jr. es el
representante del Congresista del
Distrito 20, Joaquín Castro (D), y
se toma un momento para contar
a La Prensa sobre sus planes y
campañas.
“Para mí es un honor poder servir
a uno de los hermanos Castro.
Aunque esta figura política es
muy nueva (representante estatal),
está siendo muy solicitada en el
mercado de la política”, expresó
Chapa sobre el trabajo de Joaquín
Castro.
Con mucha motivación Chapa
Jr. explicó que gracias a la experiencia
en su carrera, su cercanía
a Dios y a la inspiración que le
produjeron líderes, como el ex
alcalde de San Antonio Henry
Cisneros, y el pastor Joel Osteen
su vida va viento en popa.
“Son pequeños detalles los que
cambian la perspectiva de la vida,
y si uno tiene fe es mucho más
probable que le lleguen cosas
buenas”, explicó. “A mí me tocó
el golpe de suerte gracias a mi fe
en Dios y a mis cuatro hijos”.

San Antonio employees are
striving to get the city off the
fat list and into the more healthy
categories. Mayor Julián Castro
has joined Mayor Ron Emanuel
of Chicago in a competition
pitting the two cities against
each other to see who can best
improve their wellness profile.
The competition, which requires
eligible city employees
to receive wellness screenings,
complete a Health Risk Assessment,
and optionally receiving
a preventative exam, began in
January and continues until
Sept. 30. The program is being
supported by a $5 million
grant from the American Beverage
Association for a Healthy
America.
“A few months ago I had the
opportunity to meet with Mayor
Emanuel in Chicago, and I told
him that we’re going to bring it
on,” Castro said at the downtown
Wellness Rally. “We’re going to
have more employees who get
biometric wellness screenings
and health assessments done
to make sure that they’re doing

everything that they can to be the
healthiest set of city employees

The competition also strives to
help lower the rate of diabetes,
stroke, heart attack, childhood
and adult obesity, Castro added.
“Any of the employees and
those family members [including
certified domestic partners]
enrolled in one of the city’s
civilian health plans are eligible
to participate in the challenge,”
City Manager Sheryl Sculley
said.
There are two steps required
to participate.
“The first is the biometric
screening, so that’ll be taking
your blood pressure, body mass
index, total cholesterol, your
sugar levels,” Sculley explained.
“Secondly, complete your health
assessment. It’s important for
individual employees to know
their own biometrics.”
The winning city will receive
$3 million from the American
Beverage Association to invest
in employee wellness,” Castro
said. “The second place city is
still going to get $2 million, but I
want to be first place,” he added.

La guerra de los números

La noticia es que la reforma
migratoria va caminando.
Nunca en casi tres décadas
habíamos estado tan cerca de
legalizar a la mayoría de los
indocumentados que viven en
Estados Unidos y que, según los
últimos cálculos, rondan por los
11 millones.
Y sabemos que nos estamos
acercando por la cantidad de
ataques que están recibiendo los
inmigrantes.
El ataque más reciente es de
los que creen que legalizar a
los indocumentados va a costar
mucho dinero. Muchísimo. Un
estudio de la Fundación Heritage
concluyó que a lo largo de
toda su vida esos inmigrantes le
costarían 6.3 billones de dólares
(“trillions” en inglés) al gobierno
de Estados Unidos por servicios
sociales, médicos, educativos y
muchos otros. Pero ese estudio
tiene dos problemas. Uno, no
tomó en cuenta el número de
empleos que podrían crear esos
inmigrantes. Si esos 11 millones
de personas ya no tienen que
vivir en las sombras, van a gastar
más dinero en sí mismas y en sus
familias, y van a hacer inversiones.
Muchas de ellas van a poner
su propio negocio. De hecho, de
acuerdo con un estudio realizado
por Raúl Hinojosa Ojeda, director
del Centro de Integración y
Desarrollo Norteamericano de
la Universidad de California en
Los Ángeles, una vez que se les
conceda una situación legal a los
inmigrantes indocumentados,
estos podrían crear hasta 900,000
empleos en Estados Unidos.
También calculó que aportarían
hasta 5,400 millones de dólares
en impuestos.
El otro problema con el estudio
de la Fundación Heritage es quién
lo hizo. Hay inquietudes por la
objetividad de uno de los autores
del estudio, Jason Richwine.
The Washington Post informó
recientemente que Richwine escribió

doctorado en Harvard, en 2009:

tan capaces y tan educados como
el resto de la población, entonces
tus conclusiones nunca podrán
ser objetivas y creíbles. (Además,

blancos es un gravísimo error ya
que los latinos no son una raza.
Hay, desde luego, muchos latinos
blancos).
El estudio de la Fundación
Heritage quedó opacadas por
la controversia que generó uno
de sus autores. Pero aun así
queda abierta la pregunta: ¿Los
inmigrantes indocumentados
contribuyen más de lo que toman
de la sociedad? La respuesta es
un categórico sí. Un ejemplo.
Tomemos el caso del sistema de
salud de Estados Unidos. La escuela
de medicina de la universidad
de Harvard quería saber si los
inmigrantes habían sido una carga
para el programa de Medicare,
que ayuda a los mayores de edad.
La frecuente acusación de los
más conservadores es que los
inmigrantes abusan de los programas
sociales que ofrece el gobierno.
Bueno, la conclusión fue
exactamente la opuesta. Del 2002
al 2009 los inmigrantes le generaron
al Medicare una ganancia de
115,000 millones de dólares.
En cambio, los nacidos en Estados
Unidos le ocasionaron una
pérdida al gobierno durante el
mismo período de 28,000 millones
de dólares. Esta es la guerra
de los números.
Por cada estudio, como el de la
Fundación Heritage, que acusa a
los inmigrantes de ser una carga
para la economía de este país,
hay otro que sale argumentando
exactamente lo opuesto. ¿A quién
le creemos?
Dejemos los números a un lado
y déjenme contarles lo que yo he
visto en mis 30 años en Estados

resultados. Hay muy pocos países
en el mundo con una democracia
multirracial, multiétnica y multicultural
como la de Estados Unidos.
No podemos, no debemos,
cambiar lo que ha funcionado tan
bien por más de dos siglos. Más
allá de los números, hay que darle
la bienvenida a los que vienen detrás
de nosotros. Es exactamente
lo mismo que hicieron los que

The Greatest Generation
is becoming a passing
memory
Thursday was D-Day. In
1944 allied forces stormed the
beaches of Normandy. The long

go down in the record books as
World War II.
NBC newsman Tom Brokaw
coined the phrase, The Greatest
Generation, is his book by
the same name. The Greatest
Generation was the Americans
who lived and survived the
Great Depression and continued
that glorious life through World
War II.
Although this country attempted
to remain neutral when
the war began in 1939, when
the Japanese bombed the naval
base at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii,
that neutrality went by the
wayside and America did what
it does best. It took over the war
effort and took on the role of its
backbone.
The U.S. military suffered a
near-death blow when almost
its entire naval armada was
destroyed on the morning of
December 7, 1941, a day that
President Franklin Delano Roosevelt
in a speech before a joint
session of congress referred
to it as “a day that will live in
infamy.”
D-Day was the beginning of
the end for the Axis of Power.
On the European Front, Americans
fighting alongside the allied
forces began the long and
hard trek that put an end to the
Third Reich. All that was left
for the Greatest Generation was
to end the war in the Pacific
with the catalyst that put the
U.S in to a world war.
From Pearl Harbor to the
Battle of Midway and Bataan
Death March the Greatest Generation
survived and prevailed
even though their backs were
up against the proverbial wall.
It ended with the dropping of
atomic bombs on Hiroshima
and Nagasaki.
This shortened version of
how America came to D-Day,
June 6, 1944 is probably more
than what Americans will hear,
read or see about this day in
what the Right calls the MSM,
Main Stream Media. For whatever
reason it seems that those
whose responsibility to inform
the public are not reporting or
spending much time on the subject.
After all, in today’s short
attention span culture this is ‘so
not relevant.’ Perhaps if an app
were available coverage would
be more extensive.
On the same day as D-Day
24 years later, another piece
of American history occurred.
In the early morning hours in
the kitchen of the Ambassador
Hotel in Los Angeles another
Kennedy fell to an assassin’s
bullet. New York U.S. Senator
Robert f. Kennedy was shot and
killed as he made his way to his
suite. Just a few hours earlier
he had won both the California
and South Dakota presidential
primaries. That too received
limited coverage.

The Broadway Reach, a cultural
collaboration between seven
prime San Antonio institutions
geographically linked by Broadway,
sets up a creative, educational
and culturally rich corridor
to make it easy for guests and
residents alike to take advantage
of some of the city’s great destinations
for art, natural resources and
inspiration.
Earlier this week at Mahncke
Park, Mayor Julian Castro and all
the Broadway Reach institutions’
directors announced the new
Broadway Reach Pass along with
a flurry of activities this weekend
to inaugurate the new corridor.
“The last creativity study found
a multi-billion dollar impact from
our creative economy and these
organizations are the ones that
are driving that are driving that,”
the Mayor said. “So whether it’s
learning the process by which
Norman Rockwell painted his
painting or discovering the world
of animals or beginning to better
understand math at the Children’s
Museum … this creative corridor
along Broadway is essential to the
liveliness of San Antonio … and
could create that spark of curiosity
that leads to learning.”
Castro joyfully held up the
very first Broadway Reach Pass
ever issued, graciously posed
with “Artie” the McNay mascot
as well as a gorgeous parrot from
the Zoo and congratulated all the
participants on a job well done.
This endeavor not only makes
it easier and convenient to visit
and find some of San Antonio’s
best kept secrets, it redefines San
Antonio in a sense by making it
easy for everyone to see the city
has much more to offer than the
Riverwalk and the Alamo – our
fair city also has first rate museums
and many other amenities
for almost every taste from the
fabulous modern art displays at
the McNay to the stunning glass
conservatories at the Botanical
Gardens.
Add to the mix the new Children’s
Museum, the fabulous
Treehouse on the River behind the

pronto antes que más tarde, más

cambios para que el
público tenga tiempo adecuado
para preparar.

Keep your credit card information
safe from cybercriminals

Is the cash register dead?
As the popularity of mobile
credit card transactions increases,
the need for typical cash
register transactions may seem
like it’s on its way out – but
not just yet. Even while many
early adopters are using Square
or Google Wallet, technology
companies, the government
and consumer watch groups
are looking to make sure that
mobile credit card transactions
are safe.
For many consumers, mobile
transactions offer convenience
and improved recordkeeping.
How nice would it be to never
have to carry a number of credit
cards or cash around in your
wallet but rather simply wave
your mobile smart phone over
a scanner to pay for goods and
services? How useful to never
worry about leaving a card behind
– dropping it or worrying
about the numbers being stolen
at an ATM or restaurant?
This was some of the inspiration
behind several new mobile
technologies from companies
such as Google and Square.
The idea is that you can simply
use your smart phone (iPhone,
Android, etc.) for transactional
purposes. Starbucks, for example,
uses Square and allows
customers to scan their smart
phones to pay for coffees and
other foods – and the process
is faster than you can say “tall
decaf latte.”
Retailers recognize that mobile
transactions are not only
convenient for consumers – but
for businesses as well. One
of the benefits is that the fees
for businesses are much lower
than what they are charged
from credit card companies.
For example, PayPal has announced
that it is offering free
mobile card processing through
its Cash for Registers program.
According to a recent article in
TechSpot, “In order to sign up
for the free service, PayPal is
requiring companies to turn in
their old point-of-sale system in
favor of PayPal’s Here [Point of
Sale (POS) technology]… Once
2013 is over, fees will go back
to normal, but for a business that
runs a lot of credit cards, the
amount saved in the remainder
of 2013 could be quite large.”
However, while mobile transactions
are gaining wide acceptance
– many vendors, retailers
and customers are still unsure
whether or not they should write
off credit cards forever. While
credit card fraud has been rising
over the past decade, experts
question whether smart phone
technology will be any better
in preventing fraud or theft? In
the United States, identity fraud
increased by 13 percent in 2011
as more than 11.6 million adults
became victims of identity fraud
in the United States, according
to Javelin Strategy & Research.
Even the identities of the dead
are being resurrected -- 2.5 million
deceased get their identities
stolen every year, according to
Time Magazine.
The Federal Trade Commission
(FTC) recently put out a
report urging people who use
mobile transaction technology
to be vigilant, but not to fear
the new technology. “The mobile
payments industry is in its
infancy and already people have
scads of choices — mobile apps,
online checkout wallets, technologies
like Near Field Communications,
and mobile carrier
billing, to name just a few. For
consumers, mobile payments
can be a convenient way to pay
for things, get discounts through
mobile coupons, and earn or use
loyalty points.”
However, according to FTC,
“… mobile transactions have
been less prone to fraud…because
mobile commerce does
not yet have what criminals
consider enough retailers and
consumers to target, experts say.
But that is changing as mobile
commerce grows.”
While mobile credit cards are
changing the way we pay, businesses
and technology companies
are changing and rethinking
their data security practices. As
the technology improves and is
more widely used, security will
also improve.
So, if you want to give Google
Wallet or Square a try, here
are a few tips from the FTC to
prevent your personal financial
information from getting in the
hands of criminals:
1. Only use your mobile
device to pay for goods and
services at reputable retailers.
2. If you do lose your mobile
device – call your banks, credit
card companies and other pertinent
vendors to close or change
account numbers. If you have a
number of online mobile apps –
change your passwords to ones
that are harder to hack.

Calidad de vida

Hoy es mi cumpleaños, y en
días como este es cuando uno se
da cuenta de aquellas personas a
quienes les importas y a quienes
no les importas mucho.
Desde las 12 de la madrugada
he recibido llamadas de amigas,
amigos, familiares de mi novio,
familiares míos y de mis papás.
Pero lo que más me llama la
atención y me motiva es recibir
llamadas de gente con la que
hace mucho tiempo no convivo.
Esas personas que quizá llevo
5 o 6 años sin ver, y aun así me
frecuentan cada año con una
llamada. Ese tipo de llamadas
son las que cambian tu día, te
motivan y te hacen sentir feliz
porque eres recordada entre personas
que aunque no las veas tan
seguido, por alguna razón les
importas mucho.
Cuando sabes que eres importante
para gente que no has visto
en tanto tiempo es cuando debes
preguntarte, ¿Por qué se acordó
de mí? ¿Qué hice para que se
tomara el tiempo de hacerme
una llamada sin importar qué tan
lejos se encuentre de mí?
Seguro me recuerdan porque
me tienen cariño, y ese cariño
viene de algún detalle que yo
tuve con ellos.
Claro que no es así con todos
mis conocidos, pues también
he perdido amistades por no
frecuentarlas o no tomarlas
en cuenta en mi vida. Sin embargo
este tipo de llamadas de
felicitación me dan fuerza y
motivación para seguir siendo
mejor persona y para procurar
tener atenciones con aquellos
que me las han dado, y hasta con
esas personas a las que aprecio
y que tampoco me toman mucho
en cuenta.
De eso se trata la vida también,
pues aunque dicen que no
debe importarte el “qué dirán”,
yo creo sí es relevante en estos
momentos porque producen
alegría y despiertan emociones
de tan solo saber que eres querido
y apreciado por los demás.
No cabe duda de que para ser
recordado, tú también debes
acordarte de los demás. No
necesitas comprar el regalo
más caro para hacer a alguien
feliz, pues con una llamada,
una tarjeta o un detalle pequeño
creado por ti podrás hacer la
gran diferencia.

Just a Thought: La Prensa Publisher
Tino Duran
For the past seven weeks now I
have been writing about local and
national Hispanic icons I have
met personally over the years with
surnames like Chavez, Cisneros,
Bernal, Gonzalez, and more.
Each week I share my personal
memory and encounters with these
icons whether it was a one chance
opportunity like my interview with
activist Cesar Chavez, a photo op
with former Mexican President
Vicente Fox, or continuing interactions
with home grown icons over
a number of years.
As a columnist for La Prensa
for two and a half years, I think it
is certainly appropriate this week
to write about my longtime friend
and the man who approves my La
Prensa columns, Publisher Tino
Duran.
Ironically my first encounter
with Mr. Duran and his wife, Millie,
was in the 90s at a local department
store located in Crossroads
Mall in Balcones Heights. The
mall is now called Wonderland of
the Americas.
At the time my wife Linda and I
were shopping in the mall when we
literally ran into him on that chance
meeting. I knew who he was and so
I walked up to him and introduced
Linda and myself to him and Mrs.
Duran.
Since we lived in Balcones
Heights at the time, we did much
of our shopping at the mall. On
numerous occasions after that
first encounter we would run into
them walking the mall and chit
chat for a few minutes and then
move on. Linda would visit with
Mrs. Duran and I would visit with
Mister Duran.
Eventually I was elected a City
Councilman in Balcones Heights
the first time in 1997 and on frequent
occasions Mr. Duran would
attend part or all of a council
meeting. Again we visited before
or after the meeting and he was always
encouraging in offering good
advice on a number of issues. Since
he knew I worked as a reporter
back in the day, he told me I could
write and submit articles pertaining
to Balcones Heights.
When I chaired a Salute to Balcones
Heights Veterans in 2003,
not only did La Prensa cover the
event, but Mr. Duran attended
and sat on the stage during the
ceremony with other dignitaries.
Guest speakers included Ret.
Army Col. Bob Howard, a Medal
of Honor Recipient and two retired
Generals.
When our council voted to install
Red Light Cameras in the city
in 2007 I wrote some articles on
the controversial cameras. At the
time he offered me the opportunity
to write an on-going column. For
some dumb reason I declined at
the time.

chance to write a column. Needless
to say I jumped at the opportunity
and “Ask the Judge” ran successfully
for the previous two years
before “Just a Thought” took its
place this past January.
A spiritual man, Mr. Duran has
always shared his faith with me as
well as others. Last year at an event
he quietly handed me a 3x5 card
with the encouraging words, “What
moves the Lord is not the size of
your need, but the faith you have
to meet that need.” I keep that card
close to remind me when I am down
that better days are ahead.
His La Prensa Foundation awards
annual scholarships, honors outstanding
women in the community,
and business and civic leaders who
make a difference in people’s lives.
That is somebody I look up to and
admire.
Since I have been actively involved
with Mr. Duran as a friend,
I consider myself a better man for it.
I am honored that Mr. Duran has
the faith in my writing ability to
publish my column every Sunday
for La Prensa and prouder to call
him my friend and advisor.
Anyway, as always, what I write
is “Just a Thought.”

going to retire, we didn’t know

go, what we were going to do, so
the decision’s been made for us,”
Brown said, “And it gives me a
sense of security that I can leave
the military and have a house and
a home to raise my daughters and
continue to heal.”
“It’s not so much the physical
part of it; I’ve also got some issues
with Post Traumatic Stress
Disorder, and I’m dealing with
that,” Brown responded when
asked how he was wounded.
Brown, originally from London,
England, has served three
tours in Iraq and one in Afghanistan,
and is currently assigned to
the 101st Airborne Division and
the Wounded Warrior Battalion at
Fort Campbell. He and his family
will move to San Antonio upon his
discharge after 10 years of duty.

Political advantage can’t come at the
expense of Texans’ voting rights
The spirit of bipartisanship that
made the 83rd Legislature such a
success threatens to be overshadowed
by a contentious special session
on redistricting.
Of course, redistricting is largely a
partisan undertaking, and it would be
naïve to think that it could be accomplished
without both sides trying to
maximize their political interests.
But the majority party’s intention of
merely rubber-stamping the interim
maps does not fully address the
unfairness and inadequacy of the
unconstitutional political boundaries
it imposed two years ago.
And addressing the issue in a special
session, when different Senate
rules put Democrats at a significant
disadvantage, raises troubling questions
about the openness, transparency,
and fairness of the entire process.
The 2012 elections for the Texas
House and Senate and the U.S.
House of Representatives were conducted
under an interim set of maps
that were put in place by a federal
court, but never intended to be the
ultimate solution. These temporary
maps were crafted after the court
found intentional discrimination in
the redistricting maps enacted by the
82nd Legislature in 2011.
The interim maps retained many
of the discriminatory features of

the 2011 redistricting plan, which
largely ignored the explosive growth
of Texas’ Hispanic population over
the previous 10 years. The congressional
map was the most grievous of
all, creating only one minority opportunity
district. Minorities should
have been given an opportunity to
win at least two and perhaps three
of the four new U.S. House seats
that Texas gained in the 2010 census.
The interim maps were meant
to be a short-term remedy for the
2012 elections, but now the majority
party wants them enacted into
law, even though they didn’t solve
all the problems identified by the
court. Doing so would make it much
more difficult, perhaps impossible,
to produce political boundaries that
truly represent the racial and cultural
demographics of Texas.
The purpose of this special session,
pure and simple, is to blunt that
influence for the rest of the decade.
The partisanship that now pervades
the Capitol stands in stark
contrast to the spirit of cooperation
that prevailed in the regular session,
when Democrats and Republicans
worked together to invest
more money in public education,
child protection, and mental health
programs; reduced the number of
stressful end-of-course exams for

expand the San Antonio Missions
National Historical Park by 137
acres. The Spanish missions are a
unique treasure for us as Texans
and for all Americans. Missions
National Historical Park preserves
the largest collection of Spanish
colonial resources in the country
and is an educational, historical,
and cultural resource for more than
one million visitors each year. The
park is important to understanding
the history of Texas and the United
States, and has a strong economic
impact on the City of San Antonio
and Bexar County.
I know that many of you know
the beauty and history the Missions
have to offer. Thanks to the leadership
of Bexar County Judge Nelson
Wolff, there is a now a great Mission
Reach trail connecting from
near the Alamo to all four missions
within the park. If you have not yet,
I hope that you will soon spend a
morning with your family walking
or cycling along the San Antonio
River from the excitement of downtown
to Mission Concepción.
Or, perhaps you were able attend
the annual Mission Fest at Mission
San Jose, where I enjoyed myself
so much recently Father Tony Posadas,
Andrew Anguiano, Neighborhood
Association President Armando
Cortez, and thousands of your
fellow San Antonians. I have also
had the opportunity to visit the narrow
white stucco building—beautiful
in its simplicity—of Mission
San Juan Capistrano. I was there
recently with Archbishop Gustavo
Garcia-Siller, Father David Garcia,
and Father Jim Galvin when they
recently re-opened Mission San
Juan after an impressive and complex
restoration with private funds.
Father Garcia is fortunate to have
the assistance of “Los Compadres,”
a group of committed citizens, who
have raised over $1 million for the
continuing restoration and preservation
of the Missions, led by board
chair Pamela Bain and Executive
Director Susan Chandoha.
Their annual “Music Under the
Stars” concert at Mission San Jose
is a great way to experience Missions
National Park. And thanks
to the leadership of State Rep. Joe
Farias, park visitors now benefit
Texas students and gave them more
curriculum choices, shored up the
Teacher Retirement System, and
began to address our future water
needs with a $2 billion infusion from
the rainy day fund.
There is no limit to what we can
accomplish when working together,
and that’s what makes this special
session on redistricting so tragic.
Legislators who usually think of
each other as family find themselves
in a house divided.
As vice chairman of the Senate
Select Committee on Redistricting,
I am working to make this process
as open as possible given the circumstances
and provide all Texans
an opportunity for input. And as
chairman of the Senate Hispanic
Caucus, I am committed to pursuing
alternative political boundaries that
reflect the tremendous growth of the
Latino population in Texas.
I am guided in this effort by one
simple rule: no party should be able
to obtain partisan advantage at the
expense of any citizen’s voting
rights.

park, the Missions could double
their economic impact on San
Antonio.
I would also like to thank my
colleague, U.S. Rep. Pete Gallego,
who so eloquently spoke during
consideration of our bill about what
the Missions mean to him and to
San Antonio.
Frankly, I would like to do more
to expand the park, like including
other lands in Bexar and Wilson
counties with historic ties to the
Missions.
This park expansion will provide
one more good reason for San
Antonio families and visitors to
enjoy the beauty and culture of the
Missions.

the Caribbean, I visited a cutflower
farm outside Bogota,
Colombia, an hour’s drive from
downtown that would have been
impossibly dangerous 10 years
ago. Along the way I passed office
parks, movie theaters and subdivisions,
interspersed with small
ranches and family businesses.
At the flower farm, one-quarter
of the workers are female heads
of households. The carnations and
roses they were clipping would
arrive in U.S. stores within days,
duty free.
What I saw on the flower farm
was just one sign of the economic
blossoming in the year since a
U.S. free-trade agreement with
Colombia went into force. Over
that period, American exports to
the country are up 20%.
The U.S. experience with Colombia
reflects a larger economic
boom across the Western Hemisphere
that offers many exciting
partnership opportunities for
American business. In Rio de
Janeiro, I met with Brazilian and
American business leaders—representing
the aerospace, energy,
construction and manufacturing
sectors—who laid out a remarkable
vision for prosperity that
spans the Americas. As these
business leaders made clear,
Latin America today is a region
transformed. Elections that once
were exceptions are now largely
the norm. In a growing number of
places, conflicts between left and
right have given way to peaceful,
practical governance. And in the
process, Latin America’s middle
class has grown 50% in the past
decade alone. By some estimates,
it is nearly the size of China’s.
There is enormous potential—economically,
politically
and socially—for the U.S. in its
relations with countries of the
Western Hemisphere. And so
the Obama administration has
launched the most sustained
period of U.S. engagement with
the Americas in a long, long
time—including the president’s
travel to Mexico and Costa Rica
last month; my own recent trip
to Colombia, Trinidad, and Brazil;
Secretary of State Kerry’s
participation in the Organization
of American States’ meeting
in Guatemala; the president
of Chile’s visit to Washington
this week and a planned visit to
Washington by the president of
Peru. Brazilian President Dilma
Rousseff arrives in Washington
in October for the first state visit
of the second term.
As leaders across the world
work to lift their citizens out of
poverty and to diversify their
economies from commodity-led
growth, the U.S. believes that the
greatest promise—for Americans
and for our neighbors—lies in
deeper economic integration and
openness.
The process is further along
than you might think. Not only
is the U.S. deepening what is
already a trillion-dollar trading
relationship with Mexico and
Canada—we also have free-trade
agreements that stretch nearly
continuously from Canada to
Chile.
One of the most promising
developments is the year-old Alliance
of the Pacific among Chile,
Colombia, Peru and Mexico. This
pact, involving four of the region’s
fastest-growing countries,
now has nations across the world
seeking to participate or offer a
positive supporting role. We’re
one of those nations. By committing
to lowering trade barriers and
integrating diplomatic interests,
we are showing that pragmatism,
not ideology, is the secret to success.
The effort also serves as a
reminder of the deep connections
between our enhanced engagement
in this hemisphere and our
Asia-Pacific rebalance.
For Brazil, as for the U.S., one
of the most important frontiers is
energy. From biofuels to deepwater
oil reserves illmt gas to hydroelectric,
Brazil is energy-rich,
and that has tremendous implications
globally. Brazil already is a
leading expert in renewables and
deep-water extraction, but both of
our countries can advance further
if we work together. I know from
my meeting with President Rousseff
that Brazil is equally committed
to an energy partnership.
Ultimately, all of these economic
opportunities rest on
democratic protections and citizen
security. Through the Inter
American Democratic Charter,
the nations of the hemisphere
committed to promote and defend
representative democracy; this
commitment remains as important
as ever to the success of the
Americas. And from Mexico to
the Caribbean to Colombia, we
remain invested in long-term security
partnerships. The U.S. will
continue to stand by Colombia.
That’s going to require some
honest conversations, like the one
that will take place next week at
the OAS General Assembly on
drug policy. Similarly, many
countries have serious concerns
about weapons coming from the
U.S. and are angry about our
criminal-deportation policy for its
lack of transparency. We won’t
shy away from these kinds of
difficult discussions.
Here at home, we need to
reform our immigration policy
because it is the right thing to
do for our own country. But it
also will strengthen our standing
in the hemisphere. Success
in international relations, like
any relationship, comes down to
respect. And fully realizing the
potential of these new relationships
requires treating people
from other nations living inside
our borders with respect.
The changes under way invite
the U.S. to look at Latin America
and the Caribbean in a very different
way. The defining question
for U.S. policy is no longer “what
can we do for the Americas?” It is
“what can we do together?”
In the 1990s, we imagined a
Europe that is whole, free and at
peace. Today, I believe we can
credibly envision an Americas
that is solidly middle-class, secure
and democratic—from the
Arctic Circle to Tierra del Fuego
and everywhere in between.
Op Ed: a workable fix
for working immigrants

When I was a kid I worked
outside on the ranch from sunup
until sundown. When my
girls were old enough, they did
the same thing. Working right
alongside them was a handful of
migrant workers who helped us
with the hard and physical labor
of running a successful cow-calf
operation.
These migrant workers weren’t
just faceless workers. They were
family. They spent their days
working to support their families
back home, and at Thanksgiving
and Christmas they would sit
down at the dinner table with the
rest of us.
Unfortunately, our current
immigration program doesn’t
allow these workers to come
here legally. Instead most of
them travel here illegally, and
in doing so they risk their lives
to work and ultimately provide
for their family. And employers
who desperately need a labor
force face charges and steep fines
if they employee these workers.
This is a problem that must
be fixed.
Washington is finally working
toward reforming this country’s
broken immigration system. I am
glad to see that in both chambers
of Congress, a true fix to our
country’s guest worker program
is being considered. However, I
worry that the skewed notion that
a practical guest worker program
implies blanket amnesty might
set back any progress.
Let’s be clear, ranchers don’t
support blanket amnesty. Amnesty
and citizenship should be
a separate debate. Let’s also be
clear that these workers aren’t
taking away American jobs. At
our ranch in Falls County – a
county with a high unemployment
rate—we can’t find U.S.
citizens who will do the hard
work of ranching. We go through
5 or 10 U.S. employees a year
because, when we do find someone,
they typically quit within a
few weeks. Migrant workers are
simply doing the jobs that most
Americans refuse to do.
The livestock industry needs
a steady, year-round workforce.
This is why Texas ranchers
support a plan that allows immigrants
who want to work in
the U.S. an opportunity to do so.
Both the Senate and the House
have different ideas on how to
accomplish this. The Senate has
taken an all or nothing approach
to comprehensive immigration
reform, and as part of that, has
included a guest worker program.
The House is biting off the immigration
overhaul in small
chunks by introducing smaller,
stand-alone bills including the
Agriculture Guestworker Act,
introduced by House Judiciary
Chairman Bob Goodlatte (R-
Virginia).
I don’t know which approach
Congress will take to fix the issue,
but I do know that we must
have a practical program where
willing workers can come to the
U.S. on a work visa and stay
for at least 3 to 5 years before
they’re required to return home.
Once they’ve returned home,
they should be able to reapply
for their visa and return to their
job. This provides stability to
an industry that simply can’t
afford to continuously turn over
new employees. A program that
allows these folks to work here
legally also allows them to be
accounted for and take part in the
economy by paying taxes.
Border security is crucial to
any immigration reform, particularly
in Texas. While a practical
and effective guest worker
program isn’t the single cure
to securing our border, it will
help reduce the flood of illegal
immigrants crossing the border.
This relief will allow authorities
to focus on controlling people
crossing illegally.
Whether Congress reforms
our entire immigration program
or not, they must come up with
an effective fix to help provide
Texas ranchers with a reliable
workforce. This is the right thing
to do for our country and those
migrant workers wanting to make
a better living for their family.

Lanier H.S. student recognized
for the Gates Scholar Honor

Lanier High School has a
reason to be proud of its alumni.
Soon-to-graduate Rudy Martinez
was recently recognized in the
City of San Antonio Council
Chamber by the San Antonio
Hispanic Chamber of Commerce.
Martinez rank third in his
class and in the fall he’ll be at
the University of Texas at Austin
enrolled at the McCombs
School of Business. His major
is accounting which he wants to
couple into a career with the FBI.
His extra-curricular activities
proved beneficial for him. As
assistant chief for the Lanier
SAISD Police Explorers, Rudy
takes on a leadership role, including
meeting with advisors,
law enforcement officials, administrators
and community
professionals and serving on the
Internal Affairs Review Board
for Command Staff. He has been
active in Academic Decathlon,
participated in criminal justice
leadership programs and is
treasurer of the National Honor
Society. He also is the branch
manager for the student-run
Alamo Federal Credit Union
branch located at Lanier.
Rudy’s high school graduation
will take place on Sunday at the
Alamodome.

Alamo Colleges awarded $1 million
for Science and Math scholarships

The Texas Higher Education
Coordinating Board (THECB)
has awarded $1 million to the
Alamo Colleges to fund Texas
Science, Technology, Engineering
and Math (T-STEM) scholarships
for academic year 2013-
2014. The award will provide
scholarships for 380 students at
the Alamo Colleges’ five colleges,
beginning in fall 2013.
This is the second year the Alamo
Colleges has been awarded T-
STEM funds. For 2012-2013,
340 students received T-STEM
scholarships.
“We are pleased to receive
these funds for the second year
in a row, and, especially, to see
the amount increased so that
more students may benefit,” said
Alamo Colleges’ Chancellor Dr.
Bruce H. Leslie. “This generous
award will encourage students to
pursue careers in critical fields,
benefitting not only the San
Antonio community but also the
state of Texas.”
The T-STEM Challenge Scholarship
Program was established
by House Bill 2910, passed by the
82nd Legislature, Regular Session
in 2011. The T-STEM program
is funded through a grant
provided to the THECB from the
Texas Guaranteed Student Loan
Corporation. Grants awarded
under the T-STEM program
allow colleges to provide meritbased
scholarships to qualifying,
high-achieving full-time students
pursuing careers in STEM and related
fields. Student eligibility is
based on grade point average and
successful completion of courses
that lead to a degrees and careers
in specified STEM fields.
As part of the scholarship
program, students will be encouraged
to work part time, no
more than 15 hours per week, at
one of the partner companies for
the program. To qualify for the
scholarships at the Alamo Colleges,
students must have had a
3.0 GPA in mathematics and science
courses taken while in high

St. Mary’s awarded more than $1
million in MARC Grant renewal

St. Mary’s University has
been awarded $1,029,750 for a
five-year renewal of its Minority
Access to Research Careers
(MARC) grant, which is sponsored
by the National Institute of
General Medical Sciences.
The grant provides underrepresented
students majoring in
Biology, Biochemistry, Chemistry,
Physics or Engineering
Science opportunities to complete
research training and work
alongside faculty mentors. Undergraduate
students participating
in the MARC Undergraduate
Student Training in Academic
Research (MARC U*STAR)
program are provided with academic
and research support to
prepare them for Ph.D. programs
in the biomedical sciences.
Approximately 100 St. Mary’s
students have benefited from
MARC U*STAR since its inception
at the University in 1983. Of
those, 60 percent have entered
graduate school and 10 percent
have entered medical school.
The remaining 30 percent have
embarked on careers in science,
engineering, technology and
mathematics disciplines.
“The success of the MARC
program at St. Mary’s is really
due to the foundation of the
program developed by Dr. Jose
Miguel Cimadevilla in 1983,”
said Timothy Raabe, Ph.D., Professor
and Chair of Biology and
current Director of the MARC
program at St. Mary’s. “‘Dr. C,’
as his students affectionately
knew him, was dedicated to the
mission of the program, which
is to increase the number of
underrepresented minorities in
the biomedical and behavioral
science fields. Ultimately, the
goal is to have these students
obtain their Ph.D. or M.D./Ph.D.
and seek positions in academia
or industry.
“It is a testament to Dr. C
given the number of St. Mary’s
students that participated in
the MARC program and have
achieved this goal.”
The program offers students
numerous benefits, including
academic year and summer research
experiences at designated
laboratories, the opportunity to
present at the annual campuswide
symposium, attendance at
scientific conferences (travelrelated
costs are paid), professional
development such as
seminars and workshops, as well
as stipends and tuition assistance.
“When I became the Program
Director after Miguel’s passing,
my only objective was not to
mess up a good thing,” Raabe
said. “In the past few years, I
have had the opportunity to incorporate
a few other activities
into the program, but the overall
structure essentially remains the
same as Miguel first envisioned
it. St. Mary’s is truly indebted
to him for his vision, leadership
and commitment to the MARC
program and to our students.”

Things have been heating up
in Texas, and the summer sun
hasn’t even reached its peak!
Despite popular belief, the nation
isn’t aware of how harmful sun
rays can be to skin. The latest
research study conducted by the
Melanoma Research Alliance
(MRA), states that Melanoma is
the deadliest form of skin cancer–so
deadly that one person in
the US dies every hour because
of it.
Approximately 76,000 Americans
are diagnosed with Melanoma
each year. While many are
familiar with the disease, very
few take preventative measures
to stop it. Hispanic and African
American women are less likely
to care for their skin, and are
getting more prone to contracting
the disease.
Statistics from the MRA show:
• Less than 28 percent of
American women believe they
could develop melanoma in their
lifetimes; it is even lower for
Hispanics at 16 percent.
• 86 percent of US women
wouldn’t recognize if they had
melanoma.
• Less than one in 10 women
doesn’t wear sunscreen daily and
reapply regularly. Sunscreen is
essential to protecting skin from
UV rays.
• People that have freckles or
moles are at a higher risk.

multiple reports the Cowboys tried
to keep the decision a secret until
team owner Jerry Jones informed
reporters this past week.

Biogenesis of America clinic and
founder Anthony Bosch, whose
clinic is linked to providing performance
enhancing drugs(PEDs)
to multiple MLB players including
Ryan Braun, Alex Rodriguez and
Melky Cabrera, agreed to cooperate
with MLB’s investigation into
the use of PEDs. Multiple reports
indicate the league could seek more
than 20 player suspensions. ESPN
also reported that the MLB could
hand down 100-game suspensions
to Braun and Rodriguez.

If you’ve never heard of Yaseil
Puig (pronounced Pweeeg) it’s
time you look him up. He is a modern
day Bo Jackson. The 22-year
old Cuban is an outfielder for the
Los Angeles Dodgers and is single
handedly turning their terrible season
around. In his first four games
in the MLB he has already hit three
homeruns and drove in nine runs.

Moreover, the Spurs are 5-0 in

In Game 1 between the Spurs
and Miami Heat the game remained
close through all four quarters with
the Heat in command for most of
the game. It wasn’t until late in the
fourth quarter when the Spurs took
a slim lead over last year’s NBA
champions.
The Spurs managed to keep LeBron
James in check most of the game
holding him to a 2013 playoff low
of 18-points. He only had 12 points
heading into the fourth quarter and
The real heroics came by way of
Tony Parker with only 5.2 second
left in the game. Parker found himself
double-teamed in the paint and
nearly lost possession of the ball.
Miraculously he managed to get a
shot off just as the shot clock expired
to give the Spurs a 4-point lead.
Parker finished with 21 points and
six assists.
"We were very fortunate. It looked
like [Parker] lost it two or three
times. But he stuck with it. He kept
competing. He gained control of it
again. He got it up there on the rim.
Great effort by Tony, and as I said,
we were fortunate," said Spurs Head
Coach Gregg Popovich.
With one final possession the Heat
floundered and struggled to get a
shot off as time expired. James and
company looked dejected as they
made their way to the locker room
in defeat.
Game 2 Sunday night in Miami
is a must win for the Heat. If the
finished the game with his 10th
career playoff triple-double.

Team of the Week for Week 9 in
the Spring Season.

Chris Williams would retire from
professional play for personal reasons
according to Scorpions head
coach, Tim Hankinson.
Williams first signed with the

Correcaminos, el equipo campeón de la división de ascenso, con su goleador Omar Ramírez y su
entrenador técnico Alfredo Varela, posaron con sus flamantes trofeos. Correcaminos está listo
para marcar su debut en la máxima división de la 62ª edición de Liga Latina.
El equipo La Raza de Laredo recibió trofeos de súper líder y subcampeón de Liga Latina. Con
la victoria de 6 a 4 goles en el segundo partido de la gran final, sus directivos Leo Rivera y Jesús
Martínez se mostraron contentos con el trabajo que realizaron sus jugadores.
Grandes sorpresas se registraron
en dos interesantes
partidos jugados en la Liga 3
Hermanos.
El campeón Bravos, dirigido
por el receptor Mario Cárdenas,
se topó con el duro rival Neighbors
(Los Vecinos), dirigidos
por el lanzador George Kassis,
los cuales les quitaron lo invicto
con pizarra de 5 carreras por 3.
Bravos vio bajar su marca a
6 victorias por 1 derrota y un
partido pendiente contra el ex
tricampeón Tuzos SA.
“El partido fue de categoría
clásica. Los campeones nunca
se imaginaban del poderío de

firme la calidad de béisbol
que se juega en nuestra liga,

including the last three consecutively,

wheel men like Dalziel, lead driver
for Starworks Motorsport. That,
despite the fact that Dalziel had
the fastest DP race lap during the
Rolex 24 at Daytona in 2012.
“Ryan’s one of those guys, well,
you have to be ready with ‘A’
game against him,” said Pruett.
“He races you wheel-to-wheel,
fender-to-fender. “And last year,
Ryan did it all.” Last year, the
stage got bigger for the Scottish
driver, and the secret was no

naming Dalziel as the 2012
Sports Car Driver of the Year.
That was then. This is now:
Dalziel returns to the 24 Hours of
Le Mans later this month (June
22-23), co-driving the No. 53
SRT Viper GTS-R, in Le Mans’
GTO Pro class. He will team with
Marc Goossens and Dominik
Farnabacher, a high-profile trio in
a much-anticipated Viper return
to Le Mans.
“Definitely, when last year
ended and we looked at all the
results and stats, it was like ‘What
do you do now after you’ve won
everything this year?’” Dalziel
said. “Well, the answer for me is
winning everything twice. I don’t
feel like I’ve accomplished everything
I want to, just yet.”
Season-for-the ages talk aside,
there was still a missing highlight
in 2012 according to Dalziel- a
Rolex 24 at Daytona victory. He
co-drove a Starworks Ford/Riley
DP to a second-place finish, two
years after what he considers a
career-defining victory on the
Daytona International Speedway
high banks.
“To me, winning at Daytona
in 2010 will forever go down as
one of the biggest moments for
me because at that time my career
was nowhere near here I wanted
it to be,” Dalziel said. “That was
special because it leapfrogged me
into the ‘big winner’ category.
That win opened up a lot of opportunities
for me, starting with
running at Le Mans in 2010. If I
hadn’t won at Daytona that year,
I don’t think would’ve ever happened.
“So, while in terms of single
accolades, Le Mans is perhaps
my single biggest achievement,

primeros “strikes” el presidente
Gonzalo “Chalo” Carramán.
Se contó con la participación
de Broncos, del manager Roberto
Garza y su coach Saúl Navejar,
que tendrán copatrocinio del señor
Prado.
También estuvo Aguerridos
de Palaú SA, bajo la dirección
de los lanzadores Jaime Garza y
José Luis Alarcón, apodado “El
Pichón”.

La derrota la compartieron
el abridor Jaime Garza y los

Cárdenas.
En el campo 2, los Cachorros se
quedaron como “novia de rancho”
vestidos y alborotados, ya que su
rival Rosita SA no se presentó a
su cita (1 p.m.).
En el segundo de la tarde, los
Atléticos con el as del pitcheo
Francisco Cano doblegaron a los
Zacatecanos y su lanzador estelar
Pilo Montes, que se fueron
derrotados con pizarra de 16-9.
“Estoy contento por el homenaje
que se me dio. Mi estilo
de juego en el béisbol es mi
propia recomendación, creo
que he estado jugando bien.
Agradezco el apoyo que me
han dado los equipos Palaú SA
y Alamo Kings con quienes me di
a conocer en esta liga. A todos los
equipos les deseo todo lo mejor
y que le echen ganas con mucha
disciplina deportiva”, expresó
Calixto Moreno.
Por su parte, el señor Prado dijo
que para él fue algo maravilloso el
homenaje, ya que pudo compartir
su felicidad con su familia, y con
el equipo Broncos, al cual estará
aportando patrocinio.
“Broncos trae una buena alineación,
por igual el resto de equipos
que se han reforzado para dar la pelea
en esta temporada. Les pido mucha
disciplina y que den todo sobre el
terreno de juego”, apuntó don Goyo
Prado.

The torrential rains that ravaged
San Antonio a couple of weeks
ago left some serious repercussions.
The city currently faces
a new threat: mosquitoes. Tree
holes, rain water ponds, and containers
filled with water are targets
for mosquito larvae. The stagnated
water left behind from the rains
created the ideal breeding ground
for the pesky insects, which are
overpopulating San Antonio.
While many may only see them
as a nuisance, mosquitoes can
cause sickness and death through
the diseases they can carry. Some
of the world’s deadliest diseases
are carried through mosquitoes:
malaria and yellow fever. Animals
aren’t safe either, as heartworms
is primarily a mosquito borne
disease. Allergies and infections
are also common side effects of
being bit.
The best way to keep safe is to
prevent it, so remove any stagnant
water anywhere in the yard that
may attract mosquitoes. Dump
every birdbath, trashcan, or pot
housing water. If none of these
things are possible, then consider
staying indoors at dawn, dusk and
the early evening, which are peak
biting times.

things that may be attracting
them towards you:
• Avoid dark clothing.
Mosquitoes use vision to locate
hosts from a distance. Dark clothes
make you an instant target. Try
wearing lighter pastel shades, or
white.
• Floral and fruity perfumes
are a no-no. Mosquitoes
love these scents and will naturally
be attracted to them.
• Watch what you eat.
Foods that have high amounts of
salt or potassium create lactic acid,
which attracts the pests.
Bug spray containing DEET
is a good repellant, but it isn’t
safe for animals. These are safer
alternatives to using it, and may
be used for pets as well; however
it requires more frequent applications.

• Citronella, Lemon Eucalyptus,
Cinnamon, Castor, Peppermint,
Rosemary, and Lemongrass
oil are excellent mosquito repellants.
• Planting Chrysanthemums
in your yard is a natural
repellant. The flowers are a natural
insecticide.
• Whole cloves scattered
around the yard will repel mosquitoes
and houseflies.

Spurs host road game viewing
parties at AT&T Center

The San Antonio Spurs announced
that they will host viewing parties
at the AT&T Center for their
road games versus the Miami Heat
throughout the NBA Finals.
The Spurs victory in Game 1 of the
NBA Finals against the Miami Heat
was a huge win and set them up for
a chance to win their fifth championship
on their home floor.
Spurs fans have the opportunity
to watch the remaining road games
at the AT&T Center to cheer on the
team as the “Drive for Five” is alive.
The games are broadcast on the
big screen as The Coyote and Silver
Dancers provide additional entertainment
throughout the game.
Fans who attended Game 1 received
Spurs car flags and took
advantage of viewing party concession
specials.
The Spurs Fan Shop is also be
open.
The viewing parties are free to attend
and open to the public, but fans
need a ticket to access the building.
Tickets to viewing parties are
available at all 20 San Antonioarea
Wingstop locations as of last
Wednesday at 11 a.m. Tickets are
limited and will be distributed on a
first-come, first-served basis.
Doors for the viewing parties open
one hour prior to tipoff for the viewing
parties. It is open seating, except
for the Terrace Level.

So as San Antonio “Heats” up
for the NBA Finals, wagers of
all sorts are being made from the
regular substantial financial wagers
to the mere “Hey you owe
me coffee on Friday” wagers.
A different kind of friendly
wager emerged in the heat of
the finals that involves San Antonio’s
own Archbishop Gustavo
Garcia-Siller and Miami’s
Archbishop Thomas Wenski.
The challenge came all the
way from Miami from Archbishop
Wenski himself. Archbishop
García-Siller was more
than delighted to accept the
friendly bet. Archbishop García-Siller
is wagering 20lbs
of bar-b-que brisket and 10lbs
of fajitas that our Spurs will
conquer and become the NBA
champions. When the Spurs do
win, Archbishop Wenski will
pay off the wager with handrolled
Miami cigars and stone
crabs.

The Governing Body for the San Antonio State Hospital will
hold its semi-annual meeting Thursday, June 13, 2013. Executives
from the Texas Department of State Health Services
will meet with the San Antonio State Hospital’s Administrative
and Clinical staff via videoconference held in the Goldsmith
Conference Room located in the Administration Building at
the San Antonio State Hospital. DSHS Representatives will
include the Director of State Hospitals, the Assistant Director
of State Hospitals, the DSHS Medical Director, and the Director
of Nursing for the State Hospital Section of DSHS. Hospital

The semi-annual meeting provides the opportunity for hospital

32.000 pies lineales de tubería de recolección por gravedad de la red de
aguas residuales. El proyecto comienza en la calle South Laredo, continúa
hacia el norte hasta la intersección de las calles Calaveras con Potosí y
luego sigue paralela a la calle Potosí y al noroeste por Nueva Leon hasta
la calle Guadalupe donde gira hacia el noroeste en la calle El Paso y
continúa hacia el noroeste hasta terminar en la intersección de la calle
N.W. 28 th y la calle Culebra. El proyecto también incluye una sección a lo

La Autoridad Regional de Movilidad Alamo (Alamo RMA por su sigla en inglés) y el Departamento de Transporte
de Texas (TxDOT por su sigla en inglés) conducirán una audiencia pública para presentar los resultados
de las investigaciones preliminares de ingeniería y del ambiente, y las mejoras propuestas para la carretera US
281 de Loop 1604 hasta Borgfeld Drive en el Condado de Bexar. El proyecto del corredor US 281 desplegará
aproximadamente ocho millas, agregaría carriles de viaje adicionales, e incluirá cuatro rampas de conexión directa
que constan la mitad al norte del intercambio de la carretera US 281 con Loop 1604. Dos Alternativas para

Borgfeld Drive. Las vías de viaje continua estarán situadas entre vías exteriores con acceso parcialmente controlado,
también conocidos como caminos laterales. Los caminos laterales, los cuales cruzarán calles locales a nivel
por medio de intersecciones con semáforos, serán continuos a lo largo del proyecto propuesto y servirán trafico
local proveyendo acceso directo a negocios, vecindades y calles conectadas. La Alternativa Autopista requiere
aproximadamente 128 acres de derecho de vía adicional.
La Alternativa de Autopista Elevada consiste en dos a tres vías de viaje continua con acceso completamente controlado
en cada dirección (tres vías de Loop 1604 hasta aproximadamente Overlook Parkway y dos vías al norte
de Overlook Parkway hasta Borgfield Drive). Las vías de viaje continua serán elevadas pasando sin interrupción
sobre Sonterra Boulevard, Redland Road, Encino Rio, Evans Road, Stone Oak Parkway, Marshall Road, Wilderness
Oaks, Overlook Parkway, Bulverde Road, y Borgfeld Drive. En Loop 1604, las vías de autopista elevadas
con dirección hacia el sur y el norte se conectarán directamente a Loop 1604 hacia el este o el oeste. Las actuales
vías de viaje de la US 281, incluyendo una porción de la Super Street US 281, se mantendrán en su lugar como

Tres mil quinientos atletas de
varios deportes, representando
a 56 empresas, bancos, e instituciones
de salud se dieron
cita el sábado1 de junio en la
University of Incarnate Word en
la amistosa competencia anual
Corporate Cup, organizada por
San Antonio Sports y patrocinada
por los supermercados
H-E-B.
Cada una de las instituciones
participantes presentó un equipo
un atlético integrado por sus
empleados quienes compitieron en
Dodge ball, tug-of-war, football
throw, corn toss, soccer, kicks,
frisbee y carreras de pista y
campo en un evento de 8 de la
mañana a 12.30 de la tarde en un
evento con derroche de energía
y entusiasmo.
Entre otras empresas e instituciones
estuvieron H-E-B USAA,
AT&T, NuStar, Valero Energy,
Toyota, CPS Energy, Texas
Capital Bank, Security Services

H-E-B, presentadora de los playoffs de los Spurs, donó las más de 18 mil “toallas animadoras”
que fueron puestas sobre asientos que ocuparon aficionados en el AT&T Center. (Fotos Franco)
En el partido del equipo Silver Stars contra Sparks de Los Ángeles, la promoción “H-E-B Gift
Card Shuffle” fue todo un gran espectáculo en el que un aficionado logró acertar ganándose una
tarjeta de compras para su tienda H-E-B preferida. Cleto Rodríguez, personalidad News 4 WOAI,
fue el presentador oficial.
Integrantes del grupo mixto deportivo infantil “Masters Dribblers & Cheer Squad”, en el medio
tiempo del partido Silver Stars y Sparks, fueron los invitados en turno presentado sus habilidades
con el manejo del balón de basquetbol y en su coreografía animadora. El público los premió con
emotiva ovación.
El Mariachi Campanas de América, dirigido por el profesor Juan Ortiz, tuvo el honor de interpretar
el Himno Nacional para dar paso al segundo partido en final del oeste entre Spurs y el visitante
Grizzlies de Memphis. Campanas de América en serie de playoff anteriores ha actuado exitosamente.
Roberto “Bobby” Pulido, afamado cantante del género tejano, cumplió con éxito la invitación
para interpretar el Himno Nacional en el quinto partido del playoff entre San Antonio Spurs y
los visitantes Warriors de Golden State. Bobby, al concluir su emotiva presentación, recibió gran
ovación de las más de 18 personas presentes en el AT&T Center.
Sebastián De La Cruz, cantante de ranchero apodado “El Charro de Oro” por su bien timbrada
voz, con el apoyo de su mamá Stacy De La Cruz, quien lo lleva por buen camino, cumplió con la
invitación de Spurs Sports & Entertainment para que durante el segundo partido del playoff entre
Spurs y Warriors interpretara el Himno Nacional. 18,581 espectadores presentes en el AT&T Center
aplaudieron su actuación. En julio del 2012, Sebastián tuvo exitosa participación en el concurso
nacional de canto “America’s Got Talent”, televisado por la cadena NBC.
En la serie del playoff del oeste, la gerencia de los Spurs aprovechó para promocionar las camisetas
conmemorativas que fueron presentadas por el actor y presentador de televisión Chuck Cureau,
que aparece acompañado por chicas de la porra animadora “Hooters Energy Team”. Las camisetas
se pueden comprar en la tienda oficial de los Spurs, ubicada dentro del AT&T Center. Cureau
invito a los fans ahí presentes, y a los aficionados fuera de la arena, para aprovechar la oportunidad
de obtener un bello recuerdo al comprar las camisetas conmemorativas que están diseñadas con
slogans de la captura del quinto campeonato del oeste y el camino al título absoluto de la NBA.

Armadillo’s: hamburguesas y más al estilo country

Un restaurante accesible en
precio y con una ubicación céntrica
es Armadillo’s. Este lugar,
ubicado en el 1423 McCullough
Ave. es sin duda muy solicitado
en la zona, pues desde que entré
me di cuenta de que no cabía
una persona más en el interior
del local.
A mí y a mis compañeros de
trabajo nos sentaron en una mesa
en la terraza, la cual es amplia y
cuenta con una zona techada y
algunas sombrillas para el sol.
El ambiente del lugar tiene un
estilo country, aderezado también
por la música de ambiente.
Para comenzar, la mesera supo
que veníamos con la intención
de pagar por separado, por lo que
armó la cuenta de cada persona
preguntándole la bebida y el platillo
que cada una quería ordenar.
Yo ordené la hamburguesa
Jalapeño Cheeseburger de 1/3
de libra. La carne estaba perfectamente
cocida pero al mismo
tiempo era blanda y suave. También
existen las de ½ libra, las de 1
libra y las gigantes, que son las de
1 libra y media y 3 libras dobles.
Todas las hamburguesas son
caseras, y aunque existe una
variedad de tipos que incluyen
champiñones, aguacate, frijoles
refritos, queso y otros ingredientes,
todas son servidas con lechuga,

pepinillos, tomate, cebolla y condimentos
al gusto.
Aunque se podría pensar que
por la cantidad de carne las hamburguesas
podrían ser demasiado
grandes, todas son del mismo
tamaño, lo único que varía es el
grosor de la carne. Incluso las
hamburguesas gigantes son del
mismo tamaño.
Además de esta especialidad,
el restaurante también cuenta
con papas a la francesa, aros
de cebolla, papas a la francesa
con carne y queso y papas a la
francesa con tocino. Las papas
tienen muy buena textura y son
naturales, sin embargo para mí
gusto les faltaba un poco de sal o
algún otro ingrediente sazonador.
Armadillo’s también cuenta
con hamburguesas para niños,
hot dogs, sándwiches, ensaladas,
nachos, alitas y otros aperitivos.
El lugar es informal y relajado,
especial para ir a comer en la hora
de trabajo o para ir a comer en un
fin de semana familiar.
Una de las ventajas que tiene
es que cuenta con licencia para
vender bebidas alcohólicas, por
lo que si usted quiere acompañar
su platillo con una rica cerveza o
con una copa de vino, lo puede
hacer sin ningún problema.
El restaurante abre de lunes a
jueves de 10:30 a.m. a 9 p.m.; los
viernes de 10:30 a.m. a 10 p.m. y
los sábados de 11 a.m. a 9 p.m. Si

del grupo Atractivo DTC, dirigido
por los hermanos Gustavo y Jairo
Farías Valdovinos, continúan
conquistando público en los estados
de Michoacán y Guerrero
(México), región conocida por
“Tierra Caliente” por su clima
tropical, donde han sentado su base
desde que a finales del año 2006 se
integraron como grupo.
“Por aquellos años de nuestra
juventud, nos dedicábamos a
cumplir con nuestros estudios y a
la vez nos dábamos tiempo para
estudiar las notas musicales; por
lo que decidimos formar nuestra
propia agrupación musical, que al
principio no fue fácil puesto que
comenzamos desde cero. Se sufrió
para alcanzar el éxito y (para estar)
en el sitio actual en que nuestra
base de fans nos tienen”, expresó
Gustavo Farías Valdovinos, vocalista
principal, director artístico
y arreglista del grupo.
Valdovinos comparte el micrófono

Rockwell, images of the
typical All-American Dream
come to mind; turkey dinners,
workingmen, happy families,
baseball games and Christmas,
just to name a few. Rockwell’s
work appealed to a large audience
because his iconic works
had an amazing detail that captured
every aspect of human
emotion and told a story–Rockwell
could capture the saddest
moment, and make his audience
laugh in his next painting.
How did he manage to capture
such excruciating details?
You’ll find out at “Norman
Rockwell: Behind the Camera,”
an exhibition that explores the
rarely seen¬, yet fundamental
aspect of Rockwell’s work. The
exhibit features paintings, drawings,
tear sheets, magazines, and
prints of study photographs that
the artist used and created, and
give a behind the scenes perspective
of Rockwell at work.
The collection will be featured
at the McNay Art Museum from
Wednesday, June 5 to Monday,
September 1.

vez) con Fernando Lamas, su
coestrella en la película “Dangerous
when wet”, y se retiró
del cine.
En 1999 publicó su autobiografía
y la tituló: “The Million
Dollar Mermaid” (La sirena del

Hace días celebramos en mi
casa el cumpleaños de mi sobrinita
Alexandra.
Como no tengo hijos, mis sobrinos
son mi adoración. Soy una
tía súper consentidora, por eso en

renté un castillo de aire para que
los niños brincaran, traje piñata,
columpios y todo lo necesario
para que Alexandra tuviera un

muchacho llegó con su hijo, Jorgito,
quien tiene 10 años y padece
del Síndrome de Down. Me conmovió
mucho conocerlos, ya que
este señor es papá soltero y cría
a Jorgito y a su hermanita solo.
Asumí que padres en esta
situación siempre temen que sus
hijos sean víctimas del rechazo,
por esta razón decidí dedicarle
más atención a Jorgito que a los
otros niños y cada vez que le
pasaba por el lado le expresaba
cariño ya fuera tocándole el cabello,
haciéndole cosquillas o
diciéndole con una sonrisa “Hi,
Jorgito!”.
Como los niños aprenden con
ejemplos, mi conducta motivó
a otros chiquillos a hacer lo
mismo.
Poco a poco Jorgito se fue integrando
a la fiesta hasta que su
condición no era un obstáculo y
se convirtió en un niño más de la
celebración. A tal punto que luego
de soplar las velas del pastel y
mientras mi hermana repartía
unas bolsitas con juguetitos para
cada invitado, un niñita le indicó
muy preocupada “¡Jorgito no
tiene bolsita!”.
Al día siguiente cuando mi
hermana Liza llegó a la oficina,
el papá de Jorgito, con lágrimas
le dijo: “Gracias por invitarnos…
es la primera vez que mi hijo va
a un cumpleaños y otros niños
lo aceptan y le prestan atención.
¡Ayer pasamos el día más feliz
de nuestra vida!”.
Yo organicé esta celebración
con el propósito de que mi sobrinita
disfrutara el día más feliz
de su existencia. Poco imaginé
que sería el día más feliz en la
vida de dos extraños que, posiblemente,
nunca más vuelva
a ver. Realmente la vida nos
sorprende.
Aprendí que no debemos subestimar
nuestras acciones de
amor. Un gesto sencillo puede tocar
profundamente el corazón de
otra persona y traerle felicidad. A

Javier Bardem to appear in “The
Gunman,” “A Most Violent Year”

Javier Bardem has finalized deals
to appear in “The Gunman” and
“A Most Violent Year,” Deadline
Hollywood reported.
In “The Gunman,” the Spaniard
will play opposite Sean Penn’s
character: a retired government
assassin whose past is starting to
catch up with him.
Pierre Morel (“Taken”) will
direct the Joel Silver-Andrew
Rona production, with financing
provided by Studio Canal.
Bardem, who won the Best
Supporting Actor Oscar for his
depiction of a quirky, psychopathic
hit man in “No Country
for Old Men,” will play the hero
in “A Most Violent Year.”
Directed by J.C. Chandor
(“Margin Call”), the picture is
due to begin filming this fall in
New York.

Covo’s take on “The Internship”:
A couple of seasoned salesmen
(Vince Vaughn and Owen
Wilson) find themselves at a bit
of a loss when, in spite of their
strong track record and sales
success, when the company
they worked at for years suddenly
shuts down.
If you are looking to have
fun at the movies, this is your
ticket – wildly predictable but
immensely enjoyable, the film
is funny, somewhat charming
and tells a story that is not so
out there as one might think.
I know a few 40-somethings
embarking on ”internships”
these days.
And in spite of the simplicity
of this plot, you will be rooting
for the salesmen and the
Ayotte’s take on “The Purge”:
It’s the year 2022 on the eve
of the annual “purge” as some
Americans prepare to take
full advantage of the 12-hour
period when murder is legal,
while others take shelter in
their homes.
It’s preposterous to think
murder could ever be legal but
as we find out in “The Purge”
it’s the new America’s way to
combat crime.
If you can afford it your
chances of survival on this
night are much better.

is confident in his home security
system as he is a top security
system salesman. Despite
his confidence, Mary (Lena
Headley) his wife and children
Charlie (Max Burkholder) and
Zoey (Adelaide Kane), dread
team they end up building by
being nice people. Somewhere
along the line nice became
synonymous with boring and
uncool, but I think this is not
only charming but refreshing.
It’s not the worst thing in the
world to use the movies to tell
a nice story.
A strong cast with Assif
Mandvi, Rose Byrne and Max
Minghella, the superior comedic
timing and chemistry of
Vaugn and Wilson (who make
it look so easy some critics may
fail to appreciate their smooth
delivery) round the film out
-and Google’s best side (a little
overkill on the product placement,
maybe) make this film
plausible, fun and very easy
this night.
Minutes before the start of
the purge, the Sandins are
locked up tight in their home
behind steel walls that cover
every door and window like a
modern day castle. Everything
looks good for the family as
the purge begins. Live feeds on
televisions show the mayhem
has already begun and the killing
begins.
The Sandins appear to be safe
-- that is until young Charlie
makes a mistake that puts everyone’s
lives in jeopardy.
James DeMonaco (“The Negotiator,””
Assault on Precinct
13”) has managed to write and
direct a script with a fresh idea,
but the mystique of the whole
It’s a brilliant idea but the
story loses its impact when the
Sandins become the focus and
the family is forced to fight for
their lives against, what appear
to be, a very wealthy group of
white collar young adults.
They may look unassuming
to watch.
This is not a drama or a statement
on society – this is the
perfect afternoon at the movies
for fun that is neither tense or
taxing – nor boring in the least.
So go ahead and hit the matinee
– take the family and buy
some popcorn and get out of
the heat. This film is the perfect
vehicle for it: timely, funny and
quite entertaining. I can tell you
with complete assurance you
will leave the theater feeling
better than when you walked
in, which these days is a strong
recommendation.
“The Internship” is a quick
ride makes a couple of hours zip
by. It’s rated PG-13 and opens
nationwide June 7, 2013.

but they prove otherwise as their
resources on this night are more
than enough to breach the Sandins
top-notch security system. Chaos
ensues and the film’s level of suspense
shoots off the charts.
Despite the suspense of it all,
the film would have been much
better if it didn’t center on just
one family, but if you’re familiar

with the director’s style, “The
Purge” is true to his style. It’s a
classic evil versus good scenario
with nothing to detract from the
main plot.
Overall, “The Purge” is good
but not great. The idea of the story
will suck you in just enough to get
you to hang around for the entire
85 minutes.

is expecting her third child and
her first by current husband Ned
Rocknroll, the online edition
of People magazine reported
Tuesday.
“Kate and Ned are delighted,”
Winslet’s representative told the
publication.

mother of Mia, 12, the product
of her marriage to filmmaker Jim
Threapleton, and Joe, 9, by her
second husband, Sam Mendes,
the director of “American Beauty”

Winslet and Rocknroll - who
was born Ned Abel Smith but
later legally changed his name,
and who is the nephew of British
mogul Richard Branson, the
head of Virgin Group - married
in a private New York ceremony
in December 2012.
The actress told InStyle in
2006 that she hoped to have more
children. “I don’t know whether
one or two. Oh, God, I would
love to have more,” she said at
the time.
Winslet, whom Queen Elizabeth
II in 2012 named to be a
Commander of the Order of the
British Empire (CBE) for her
services to drama, vaulted to
worldwide fame in 1997 for her
starring role in James Cameron’s
“Titanic,” the highest-grossing

de mi novio y ya
tengo 6 semanas de embarazo.
Apenas le dije esta
semana y tardó mucho en
asimilarlo. Siento que todavía
no pone los pies en
la tierra y creo que no se ha
dado cuenta de que ya vamos
a ser padres. Le dije que era
normal, pero horas después
de haberle dicho me dijo que
su doctor de confianza le
había dicho que si yo quería
podía tomarme una pastilla
para abortar, y que no iba
a sentir nada el bebé y yo
tampoco.
Me siento muy triste de
que quiera que hagamos eso,
pero él insiste en que no estamos
listos y en que no es
el momento. Dice que nunca
nadie en su familia ha hecho
las cosas mal, y que él quiere
que nos casemos por gusto y
no por necesidad.
Yo estoy en un punto en el
que no puedo ni verlo porque
yo estoy segura de que quiero
tener a mi bebé. Por otro lado
él me está diciendo que yo soy
muy egoísta porque no estoy
pensando en él y en mi bebé. Mi
novio dice que va a ser difícil
porque el bebé va a nacer sin
muchos lujos y sin una vida
normal, pero yo le he dicho
que no tengo ningún problema
en aguantarme para volver a
ajustarnos económicamente.
Mi novio ya tiene una carrera
y es dueño de su propio negocio,
y es por eso que no creo que
esté mal que tengamos al bebé.

Por lo que veo eres una mujer
con determinación. Tú ya has
tomado tu decisión, y no la
cambiarás por nada del mundo.
Ahora te toca decirle a tu novio
eso y hacerle entender que pase
lo que pase, tú vas a tener a tu
bebé, con o sin él.
Primero que nada, quiero
decirte que no deberían de pensar
en casarse por el momento,
pues esa decisión se toma por
amor y existe un momento ideal
para hacerlo. Recuerda además
que un miembro nuevo en tu
vida es algo que te hará plenamente
feliz tanto a ti como a él.
Si tu novio decide no apoyarte
a pesar de tu decisión,
entonces dale tiempo, quizá
este muy preocupado porque
como él es quien estará proveyendo
el pan, es posible que
esté muy estresado y no sepa
ni por donde comenzar.
Tú misma dices que tu novio
está nervioso y no lo sientes
normal desde esa fecha, sin
embargo también mencionas
que siempre te ha demostrado
que te ama.
Si tu decisión es tener ese
bebé, entonces no lo dudes ni
un minuto, pues de lo contrario,
es posible que te arrepientas en
el futuro de no haber hecho lo
que tu instinto te dijo todo este
tiempo.
Habla con él y procura mantenerte
fuera de estrés, ya que
también podría dañar tu salud.
Por otro lado, no creo que tú
debas hablar con sus padres.
Cada quien debe hacerse cargo
de su propia familia, y además
de esto, recuerda que son sus
papás y siempre lo van a apoyar
primero a él.
Ten paciencia y ya verás que

Stubb’s Shanghai can seat 200
guests. The stylized decor includes
red brick and dark wood,
creating a warm, rustic feel perfect

patrons can enjoy many different
beer, wine and mixed drink
selections.
For the more adventurous,
waitresses can serve shots right
at the table from their “shot glass
holsters.”
Stubb’s will be exporting their
premium barbecue sauce for use
in the new Chinese venture. The
company’s sauces, rubs, and
marinades are now available in
more than 40,000 retail outlets
throughout the country.
