Why Do We Call Mary, The Mother Of<br />

Mercy?<br />

We call Mary the Mother of Mercy for two<br />

reasons: firstly, because she is the Mother of<br />

Jesus Christ, who is the personification of Divine<br />

Mercy, and secondly, because she is our<br />

mother, who never ceased to show us mercy.<br />

Mary’s title of the Mother of the God/Man is<br />

the most glorious of her titles, for it is the<br />

source of her greatness and the reason for her<br />

being immaculate.<br />

The<br />

words “Mother<br />

of God”<br />

describe her<br />

being exalted<br />

above<br />

all others, to<br />

a supreme<br />

height, a<br />

person who<br />

is not only<br />

greater than<br />

anyone else<br />

that God has<br />

made, who is<br />

above anything<br />

that He<br />

could have<br />

made. So great is her dignity that all heaven<br />

honours her and pays her homage.<br />

The Eternal Word who was born from all eternity,<br />

of God alone; but when, out of mercy for<br />

all mankind, He became Man, He took human<br />

nature as well in Mary’s womb, uniting this<br />

nature with the Divine Nature, in one Person,<br />

and thereby giving a truly Divine value and<br />

dignity to the actions performed.<br />

Given the title “Mother of God”, was correct<br />

as she was the Mother of Christ. She did not<br />

bear only the human nature, separated from<br />

the Divine but gave birth, in very truth, to a<br />

Divine Person, the Eternal Incarnate Word.*<br />

By the light given her from above, Mary understood<br />

the nature of her mission and she<br />

gave her consent, with great love for God and<br />

complete submission to His eternal designs<br />

“Behold the handmaid of the Lord: be it done<br />

to me according to thy word”. (Luke 1,38)<br />

Prayer: Hail Mary, full of grace. The Lord is<br />

with Thee. Blessed art Thou amongst women,<br />

and blessed is the fruit of Thy womb, Jesus.<br />

Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners,<br />

now, and at the hour of our death. Amen<br />

On Saturday April 6 th the Darwinian Gardeners’<br />

regular meeting was a visit to a<br />

member’s garden between Alhama and Totana.<br />

Photos taken when they moved there<br />

nine years ago showed the house standing in<br />

a plot which was effectively a field. By using<br />

cuttings from the clump of false bamboo<br />

which was on the site, and fast growing trees,<br />

the garden has now been divided into several<br />

areas, giving an interesting and intimate feel.<br />

Those of us who garden on rocky mountains<br />

could only gaze in wonder at the abundance<br />

of lush greenery. As well as a football pitch,<br />

screened from the rest of the garden by trees<br />

and bamboo, there is an extensive vegetable<br />

garden, colourful wild area, gravelled paths<br />

and small island beds, a secluded grove with<br />

pond and goldfish and a delightful Moorish<br />

style pavilion.<br />

our hostess<br />

showed us<br />

her collection<br />

of esparto<br />

grass objects<br />

and explained<br />

their<br />

traditional<br />

usage and<br />

also demonstrated<br />

several<br />

weaving<br />

techniques.<br />

Two members<br />

showed<br />

ways of taking<br />

cuttings<br />

and after refreshments,<br />

the raffle rounded things off and<br />

38 people went into Alhama for an excellent<br />

lunch.<br />

The Third Annual Garden Party took place<br />

on Saturday April 13 th at Cortijo Raja, Morata<br />

on the first really warm day of Spring, with<br />

traditional Spanish dancing at nearby Finca<br />

Los Loberos. As well as a number of stalls,<br />

the FAST team gave demonstrations of CPR<br />

and the Heimlich anti-choking manoeuvre,<br />

and burgers and hot dogs were provided by<br />

the Pawson family. The produce competitions<br />

were judged by Jim and Margaret of Country<br />

Kitchens and the plant competition by Andrew<br />

Brown. Winners in each category received a<br />

gold certificate and gold plant for first place,<br />

and a silver certificate and plant for second<br />

place. As well as enjoying a thoroughly enjoyable<br />

afternoon, 515€ was raised for the GO<br />

maD humanitarian charity.<br />
