CD-R Compatibility Study – Phase 2
5.0 Communication of Results
The participating companies prepared results of their individual studies and made
presentations to OSTA member company representatives during regularly scheduled
OSTA CD/DVD Physical Compatibility Subcommittee meetings.
Reports to OSTA members included:
• Blank CD-R Media Testing Report
• Physical Compatibility of Written Media Report
• CD-R Interchangeability Study
• Interchange Readability Testing Report
Global population data from the blank media testing and recorded CD-R quality testing is
available in Excel format and can be obtained by accessing the OSTA World Wide Web
site, www.osta.org.
6.0 Blank Media Testing
In the parameter compatibility study we set out to compare the following Orange Book
parameters: linear velocity, land and groove reflectivity, push-pull, radial contrast, radial
noise, wobble amplitude, wobble CNR, ATIP error rate and optimal write power (at 1X,
2X and 4X) for all submitted CD-R media (i.e. five blank discs each from 11
manufacturing processes). The study investigated variability of these parameters as a
function of disc radius, within the sets of five and between manufacturers.
The entire test was executed by Apex Systems on a single Apex OHMT-500 CD-R
tester, which was regularly monitored for drift using two reference discs. As a
consequence the reported variations and deviations could all be proven to be statistically
significant and accurate. For detailed measurement conditions, methods and results, one is
referred to the full report. The findings and conclusions are, in summary:
• Many of the pre-recorded parameters, but in particular land and groove reflection,
push-pull, radial contrast and wobble CNR, show (fairly small) radial
dependencies characteristic for the manufacturing process. Each manufacturer
appears to have a unique combination of these, effectively supplying a
“fingerprint” of the process.
• Optimal write power does not appear to vary across the disc for most media with
the notable exception of two manufacturers.
