CD-R Compatibility Study – Phase 2
11.0 Future Plans
The improved and clustered results of Phase 2 provide all OSTA members with yardstick
Global Population data that can be used to further improve CD-R media and recorders.
The improvement in CD-R media compared to Phase 1 shows that CD-R media quality
has been established, and that allows the industry to focus on other issues, such as drive
standardization and recording software. The consistency of the media manufacturing
processes is impressive and is a tribute to the collective work of many OSTA companies
to promote successful implementation of the CD-R Orange Book specification.
Final proof of CD-R value to the end user is that the high speed reading tests compare
almost identically to pressed CD-ROMs for data access times and playability, with no
loss of data even despite the purposeful selection of the “worst” recorded discs.
The recorded CD-R media used in the Phase 2 study have already been repurposed as a
resource provided to thirteen DVD-ROM drive manufacturers. Specifically these OSTA
discs will be used to assist in implementation of the “MultiRead” specification to ensure
that DVD-ROM drives are backward compatible for reading CD-R media, thus further
protecting the current investment in CD-R media and recorders. OSTA intends to
continue testing media and drives. Phase 3 testing will involve CD-RW media and
recorders.
