COMMON WHITE SUCKER: Abundant throughout the state, common<br />

white suckers may grow more than 20 inches long. Those in<br />

the 4‐ to 12‐inch size range are used by catfish, muskie, and<br />

pike anglers. Smaller ones, 2 to 4 inches long, are used for bass,<br />

walleyes, and panfish.<br />

GIZZARD SHAD: This shad is a good bait for hybrid striped bass, striped<br />

bass and catfish. Gizzard shad are found in waters throughout<br />

the state. Small shad are used whole; the larger ones are cut<br />

up and used as “cut bait.”<br />

BLUEGILL: The bluegill is a popular bait used on trotlines and banklines<br />

for flathead catfish and large channel catfish. Small bluegills are<br />

used by bass anglers. Other sunfish and small game fish may<br />

also be used for bait if they are acquired legally.
