EARLY START<br />

What is Early Start?<br />

Freshmen who score below 50 on<br />

the ELM are required <strong>to</strong> ”Early Start”<br />

before their first term of enrollment.<br />

Students who score below 138 on<br />

the EPT are required <strong>to</strong> meet the<br />

Early Start requirement by taking<br />

the SF <strong>State</strong> Directed Self Placement<br />

course during the summer.<br />

How do I sign up for Early Start?<br />

Checklist will indicate if you need<br />

<strong>to</strong> take a summer math course<br />

<strong>to</strong> meet Early Start. Follow the<br />

directions <strong>to</strong> sign up for Early Start<br />

Math either at SF <strong>State</strong> or at another<br />

CSU campus near your home. The<br />

Early Start English requirement<br />

must be satisfied by completing<br />

the online DSP at SF <strong>State</strong> prior <strong>to</strong><br />

orientation and class registration.<br />

Who should take Composition<br />

for Multilingual Students<br />

Placement Test (CMSPT)?<br />

• Non-native speakers of English<br />

who have been educated in a<br />

language other than English who<br />

were enrolled in ESL (English as<br />

a Second Language) classes at<br />

the last school they attended<br />

• Non-native English speakers who<br />

think they would benefit from ESL<br />

• Students with bilingual backgrounds<br />

who wish <strong>to</strong> substitute an upper<br />

division ESL course for a native<br />

English speaker course <strong>to</strong> fulfill the<br />

upper division writing requirement<br />

What services are available for<br />

One S<strong>to</strong>p Information<br />
