Dear Members 

Please join me in congratulating our Youth and 

Adult Bowling teams on their success in the 13th 

Youth Inter-Club Bowling Mixed League and the 

18th Adult Inter-Club Bowling Mixed League. Both 

teams came out champions this year! We are the 

first club in Singapore to clinch the championship 

title for both the youth and adult teams in the same 

year. Well done Team SGCC! 

I would like to update you that the new Darts 

Lounge is now open and is located on Level 2 of 

the New Wing, beside the Karaoke Lounge. The 

relocation of the Darts area from the Sports Bar 

was to give way to a new Youth room to be located 

beside the Sports Bar. Renovation works to the 

Youth room and Sports Bar will commence early 

December and will be completed by 21 December 

2012. The Sports Bar will be given a new look, with 

a stage area for performances. The Main Lobby will 

also be upgraded and the works are expected to 

be completed by end of January 2013. Do refer to 

page 5 for the artist’s impression of these facilities. 

I have also shared with you that we will be 

upgrading the WIFI connection in the Club – this 

will be completed within the next few months. We 

also have plans to install more CCTV cameras 

to enhance the Club’s security and surveillance 

efforts. Plans are also in the pipeline to upgrade 

the pool deck area and to increase the seating 

capacity. We hope that all these initiatives will 

improve your Club experience. 

We have recently launched the Non-Transferable 

Ordinary Membership (NTOM). Members’ family 

and friends will have priority purchase from now 

till 15 December, afterwhich the NTOM will be 

released to the general public. As per previous 

launches, we have limited numbers available and 

so, do tell your friends about it. All members who 

successfully refer their family and friends will 

receive $100 spending credit. There is an attractive 

interest-free instalment scheme for new sign-ups. 

For those who sign-up by 15 January 2013, they 

will also receive a free gift worth up to $150, on top 

of spending credit incentive. Do refer to page 4 for 

further details. 

For the year-end festivities, we have lined up lots 

of events and promotions for you. Do look through 

the pages of the magazine for the details. We held 

our first successful Charity Dinner on 28 November 

2012, in support of our adopted charity, Infant 

Jesus Homes and Children’s Centres (IJHCC). 

There are donation boxes at the Main Reception 

and Gym counter until the end of December for 

those who wish to make cash or cheque donations 

to IJHCC. 

We will be having our Christmas Light-up on 

1 December 2012. Please join us for the event 

- there will be lots of festive entertainment in 

store for the whole family. Also, don’t miss your 

chance to have a great time at our annual New 

Year’s Eve Countdown party on 31 December 

2012 – Hollywood Glitz & Glamour. Tables are still 

available for bookings. 

The Chinese New Year is also fast approaching. 

I hope you will join me and the General Committee 

in making a contribution to the Staff’s Chinese 

New Year Ang Pow Fund – a long-standing 

tradition of our Club. The Ang Pow Fund serves as 

a token of appreciation to the staff for their hard 

work and service to members. You will receive 

details in the mail very soon. 

I would like to take this opportunity to wish all 

members a very Merry Christmas and Happy New 

Year. Please take note that certain outlets will 

close early on 31 December 2012 to facilitate the 

Countdown Party at the ballroom.

Change of Policy for Table Allocation at 


Table allocation at the Dance & Music Lounge will 

be on a first-come-first-served basis and members 

must be present to reserve and occupy these 

tables. No prior booking is allowed. Members can 

reserve any number of tables, but if members’ 

guests are not fully seated at the table(s) by 

9.15pm, staff reserve the right to release the 

unoccupied table(s) or seats to allow other patrons 

waiting in line to share the table. 

Change of Band at Dance & Music Lounge 

New band, Jam will be replacing Purple Hearts 

every Friday from 7 December 2012 onwards.

The pool will be closed on Wednesday, 26

cleaning and maintenance. Fumigation will also be 

carried out on the premises. 

Escargots Bourguignon is back in Garden Grill 

Due to popular demand, Escargots Bourguignon is 

back on Garden Grill’s a la carte menu.

Garden Grill Closures 

Garden Grill will be closed on Saturday, 15 

December 2012 at 7.30pm to facilitate a private 

function and during lunch on Monday, 24 

December 2012 to facilitate the collection of

Renovation Works 

We will be creating a new youth room using part 

of the darts area at the Sports Bar. The Sports 

Bar will be closed for renovation from 3 - 20 

December 2012 and will reopen together with 

the new Youth Room on 21 December 2012. 

Temporary bar facilities will be available at the 

Main Lobby during this period. Kindly refer to our 

website for the latest updates. 

New Darts Lounge 

The new Darts Lounge is located at Level 2 of the 

New Wing (previously the KTV Room 3). Children 

below the age of 12 must be accompanied and 

supervised by an adult.

Friday and eve of Public Holidays: 4pm – 1am

Regulars In service the spotlight excellence 

In The Spotlight 

In this column, we would like to highlight and share with you some of the current issues and 

developments in the Club. If you have any feedback to share, email us at feedback@sgcc.com.sg. 

Main Lobby 

Aesthetics 

Plans are currently under way to refurbish the Main Lobby to improve the aesthetics. 

Works will start after the Christmas season. Do refer to page 5 for the artist’s 

impressions of the new lobby. 

Temperature 

We are currently looking into a variety of solutions to improve the temperature in the 

lobby. The heat is caused by the inherent design of the skylight, which creates a kind of 

“greenhouse effect”. Our upcoming renovation to the Main Lobby will include installing 

some shades over the seating area, which will hopefully alleviate the problem somewhat. 

We recommend that members take a seat in the Atrium Café, made available from 9am 

till 10pm, should it be too warm to sit in the lobby. We have plans in the second half of 

2013 to upgrade the Club’s cooling system to further improve its efficiency. 

TV Channels in various outlets 

We would like to explain to members that management has designated certain 

channels to be screened at certain outlets. The televisions in the Sports Bar will feature 

Sports channels while the one in the Main Lobby will feature Channel News Asia, but 

without the volume. In the Coffee Deli, we adopt a more flexible approach but the 

volume should be kept to the minimum, so as not to cause disturbance to other non- 

TV users at the deli. 

Reservation of Tables in Dance & Music Lounge 

Since mid-October, we have amended the rules with regards to allocation of tables 

in the Dance & Music Lounge. Members have to be present to reserve their tables, 

which will be allocated on a first-come-first served basis. However, if members’ guests 

are not fully seated by 9.15pm, the empty tables or seats will be released to other 

members waiting in line. This is to ensure fairness to all patrons. 

Music in Dance & Music Lounge 

We would like to reiterate that the Dance & Music Lounge is a communal facility and 

we try our best to give all members a chance to dance to the genre of music they like. 

In between band performances on certain evenings, our technicians spin dance music 

to cater to different types of dancing. We would appreciate if members refrain from 

requesting their own preference of songs. 

Reading Room Rules and Regulations 

We observed that some members leave the Reading Room for long periods of time, 

while leaving their belongings on the chairs. We would like to urge members to refrain 

from such actions as they deprive others the use of the room. We hope members also 

refrain from chatting in the Reading Room as the room is meant for quiet reading and 

chatting will cause disturbance to other users.

MOMENTS OF EXCELLENCE 

“My group of friends and I, together with our children, were at your 

bowling alley on 5 October 2012. There were about 50 of us in total. We 

were served by a lady staff, Ms May Chong. I would like to compliment 

her on her excellent service that she provided while we were there. 

With so many of us, the situation was rather rowdy and chaotic, but 

throughout our event, she was very calm, polite, extremely patient 

(especially with the kids) when providing service to us. 

Never at any one time was she agitated by our kids who were 

sometimes not obeying the rules set out. Rather, she walked over and

Staff Training 

As part of our efforts in making a service culture second nature to SGCC staff, we have just completed 

training programmes for our frontline staff which focused on equipping them with skills that will help 

them to create a positive experience for members. The training programme taught them how to maintain 

a positive mindset, as well as ways to manage difficult and challenging service situations in a calm and 

professional manner. 

In the pipeline will be a course on training our managers and supervisors on coaching and mentoring 

skills, so that they will be able to lead their teams and develop their staff, bringing out the best in them. 

Staff are a valuable asset to the Club as they are the key to ensuring a great Club experience for our 

members. We will continue to focus on ongoing training programmes for staff as we believe this is one of 

the important aspects in sustaining a great service culture.

Championship Titles in a Year 

13th Youth Inter-Club Bowling 

Mixed League 2012 

Having won the Youth Inter-Club Bowling Mixed 

League for two consecutive years, we are proud 

to share with you our joy on our third win. Team 

SGCC fought hard to defend the championship 

title. After a gruelling 24 weeks of competition from 

March to October 2012, we managed to defeat three 

strong teams – Chinese Swimming Club, Singapore 

Recreation Club and National Service Resort & 

Country Club. Team SGCC scored 45,904 pinfalls, 

with a margin of 1,900 pinfalls. We also won the 

Team High Game Scratch and Team High Series Scratch Awards. 

Our bowler, Chong Tai Wei, won the high game of 288 pinfalls while Tay Hui Chiang, 

won the Boy’s Master Championship title. Well done, everyone!

18th Adult Inter-Club Bowling Mixed League 2012 

This year, we managed to clinch the Championship title against two strong contenders, Seletar Country Club 

and Chinese Swimming Club. The last time we won the title was in 2005, so this is an extremely joyous 

occasion for SGCC. On top of that, we also won the Team High Game and High Series. Our bowler, Amanda 

Tan also finished as runner-up in the Ladies' Masters while Lily Leow came in seventh place. 

Bowling Victory Dinner 

The Bowling Victory Dinner was held on 26 October 2012, Friday at the Kensington Ballroom 3 with a buffet 

dinner to congratulate all bowlers on their achievements and also to thank the coaches and supporters. 

Club President, Mr Anthony Lim also presented tokens of appreciation to the bowlers. Congratulations to all 

participants for making SGCC proud.

11th Annual Inter-Club Swimming Meet (AIMS) 


This year’s Annual Inter-Club Meet was held at Warren 

Golf and Country Club. The pool was abuzz with excited 

cheering as supporters from each club came out to cheer 

on their swimmers. After a day of intense competition, 

our Club once again managed to clinch and retain the 

championship title. We achieved a total of 691.5 points and 

brought back the new “Challenge Trophy”, sponsored by 

our Club President, Mr Anthony Lim. Our swimmer, Nicholas 

Rachmadi also won the Best Boy Award for the meet. Well 

done Team SGCC! We would like to thank all swimmers 

for their participation and the parents for their support, the 

coaches and swimming sub-committee members for their 

time and effort and officials for their kind assistance.

SGCC-RI Junior Squash Championship 

1 – 8 September 2012 

SGCC has collaborated with Raffles Institution to host the annual National Squash Junior Tournament, 

sanctioned by the Singapore Squash Rackets Association. The event saw junior squash players from all over 

the country congregating to partake in competitive spirit. The juniors played a circuit style tournament which 

ensured that all participants had ample play time. The winners won prizes sponsored by Prince Squash.
