SPECTACULAR HOME COURSE
The Bearcats play at one of the premier public courses in
the Northeast, The Links at Hiawatha Landing. Golfweek
ranked The Links No. 4 in New York State for public and
resort courses in 2009. Situated along the banks of the
Susquehanna River approximately 12 miles from campus,
The 7,200-yard Links is reminiscent of the legendary circuits
of Great Britain — the authentic links-style layout evident
in the rolling hills, windswept sand bunkers and ornamental
grasses. Hiawatha also features a 22-acre teaching center,
including a 3-hole training course. The course opened in
1994 and hosted the 1996 New York State Men’s Amateur
Championship among other regional events.
The Bearcats have hosted numerous tournaments at the
Links, including the 2002 ECAC Championship and the 2007
America East Championship.
2
“The Links is a perfect home course for our team because
of the challenge of the course and the outstanding practice
facilities, that give our players the opportunity to focus and
train on all aspects of their game. It is a great course and
great test. Players will be rewarded when they hit good
shots. This course definitely will separate the very good
players from the average ones.”
- Head Coach Bernie Herceg

TOP-NOTCH INSTRUCTION
With the hiring of noted PGA teaching
professional Bernie Herceg, BU golfers have
access to elite instruction throughout the year.
Herceg has been the PGA Director of Golf at
BU's home course - The Links at Hiawatha
Landing - for 12 years. His junior golf
initiatives and private instruction have earned
him a reputation as one of the finest and most
innovative teachers in the region. He received
a Junior Leader Award from the Central
New York PGA Section in 2004 and also has
been nominated for CNYPGA Teacher of the
Year honors. A former collegiate golfer and
accomplished player in his own right, Herceg
is utilizing his PGA training and management
acumen to forge uncharted success for the
Bearcats' golf program.
WINNING TRADITION
Since 1991, Binghamton has advanced to
the NCAA Championship 11 times in 19
years, most recently in 2006. The Bearcats
established themselves as one of the premier
Division III teams in the country in the 1990s,
earning four top-10 national finishes. After
completing a successful transition to the
NCAA Division I ranks, BU has advanced to
the NCAA East Regional three times in the
last seven years. The 2002-03 team won
more tournaments (7) than any other Division
“I like to focus on maintaining the players’
individual goals and our team goals, in
addition to maintaining sound fundamentals
and instruction. When It comes to the team
environment, even though golf is very
individual when it comes to scoring, it's still
a team sport. One person is not going to
win tournaments; it will be all the players'
combined scores.”
– Head coach Bernie Herceg
“I am excited to be able to coach at a
great University and lead a strong Division
I program. I look forward to helping our
golfers mature and reach their goals, both
academically and athletically. I want to recruit
golfers who are dedicated, hard working, have
pride, mental toughness, heart and drive, with
sound golf fundamentals.”
– Head coach Bernie Herceg
I program in the country. In the last five
years, the Bearcats have won five prominent
invitationals (New England Championship,
Rhode Island Invitational, Yale MacDonald Cup,
Dartmouth Invitational, Colgate Invitational)
and have been runnerup at eight more.
Binghamton alumni golfers have distinguished
themselves as well. Playing professional
Hal Jacobs ’99 won the Massachusetts
PGA Championship in September and recent
graduate Jeff Wolniewicz ’07 captured
the 2008 New York State Men’s Amateur
Championship in August.
insight into his background, teaching philosophy
and goals for the Bearcats golf program.)
What are your initial goals for the
golf program?
To strengthen our golf program and be
more competitive. Good academics. Have
a structured practice program. Win our
conference championship annually.
What excites you most about coaching
at Binghamton?
Being able to coach at a great school and the
Division I level. Also, to be able to be part of
helping the golfers mature and reach their goals.
What kind of student-athlete are you
looking to bring to Binghamton?
I'm looking for players with good personalities
and who fit with the University's mission.
Also, golfers with sound golf fundamentals
who are dedicated, hard working, have pride,
mental toughness, heart and drive.
What are your fondest memories of your
own college playing career?
Besides the friendships and camaraderie,
being an Academic All-American. Attaining
my goals academically and athletically.
Q&a with bu head golf coach bernie herceg
What do you enjoy most about the
sport of golf?
The challenge of the sport. Every golf course
is different. The pursuit of playing great golf
(ball striking, short game and scoring). I love
to practice. Pulling off the shot when needed
and the pressure is on.
With your PGA teaching background,
you are well aware of the recent
technological aids and trends in the
game. How has instruction and the game
itself changed recently?
The technology has allowed the instructor
to analyze and identify more precisely what
is going wrong with the swing, and it helps
to communicate this and show the student,
so they can see for themselves what is
wrong. Most of the time what you think and
feel you're doing with the swing is not what
you're actually doing, and video helps prove
that, and you can show the student which
helps the learning process.
Now that there is also 3-D analysis and
bringing in the biomechanics part of the swing,
we now understand more of how the body
operates in the golf swing. From this, physical
fitness plays a major role with golfers. We
now have golf specific exercises and training
methods so golfers can train their body
correctly and the body can perform at a more
efficient and consistent level. But even with all
the technology and bells and whistles, it still
comes down to the fundamentals, if you're not
set up correctly, you're already setting yourself
up for failure. Fundamentals are still the most
important part of the swing, so you can allow
your body to have the chance for a great swing
with plenty of energy. Technology has also
helped with viewing great players' swings and
learning from them. Technology has helped
with instruction, but there's so much more to
golf than having a perfect swing. Technology
can't help with aspects such as course
management, scoring, handling pressure, etc.
Technology, can at times, be a disadvantage. It
has hurt some great players because they start
to focus too much on the mechanics and they
lose site of just playing the game.
What are the hardest aspects of golf for
anyone to learn?
Coordination, if it doesn't come naturally
for that individual. Also, understanding
the importance of the fundamentals.
It seems that people forget about the
fundamentals and this is the primary cause
for missed shots. Another aspect is not fully
understanding the importance of the short
game. It seems everyone wants to hit the ball
far and straight, but you also need to learn
how to get it in the hole.
You were an honors student in business
while you played college golf. How did
you balance both requirements and how
do you currently advise your studentathletes
on the challenges of juggling so
many things in college?
First off you need to set goals for yourself.
For me, it was to be the best I can with
my academics and to be an honors
student. I wasn't going to throw away any
opportunities. Next it was to perform well
for our team and school. You need to be
dedicated, focused, hard working, disciplined
and get along well with your teammates.
Also, don't be afraid to use the resources of
the institution to help you attain your goals.
Who were/are your inspirations or role
models, both athletically and personally?
Athletically, I've always loved baseball.
Growing up I'd say it was Bobby Murcer
and Thurman Munson for the NY Yankees.
For golf, I was inspired by the guys who
worked hard on their games ... Ben Hogan,
Nick Faldo. Personally, I'd have to say my
parents. They never pushed me or made me
do things when it came to sports. They were
always fair to me and very supportive of the
decisions I made.
What points of pride do you emphasize
with recruits about the kind of education
and athletic experience they will receive
at Binghamton?
First off, to have Division I athletics at our
University is phenomenal. Our athletics
department is very dedicated to our
programs being successful. When it comes to
the academics, our school speaks for itself.
The education that one will receive here is
second-to-none and to be awarded a degree
from our institution gives any individual the
opportunities in life they are seeking.
What other sports did you play as a
teenager and how did you get into the
sport of golf?
Basketball and baseball were the two main
sports I liked to play. I basically became more
involved with golf once I figured that baseball
wasn't the sport I was going to excel at. I
really didn't start taking golf seriously until I
was a sophomore in high school.
With many of the top notch young golfers
entering college with personal instructors
and vast individual playing experience,
what do you try to focus on to improve their
games and create a team environment?
First off I will evaluate players to understand
their learning methods and their philosophy
on the golf swing. From there, I will focus
on maintaining their goals and our team
goals, in addition to maintaining sound
fundamentals and instruction. When It comes
to the team environment, even though golf
is very individual when it comes to scoring,
it's still a team sport. One person is not going
to win tournaments; it will be all the players'
combined scores. I feel the team environment
will be good because of our team practices,
inter-squad challenges, team travel, winning
events as a team, and encouraging each other
will build good team unity and camaraderie.
Talk about BU's home course, The Links
at Hiawatha Landing, and what makes it
an outstanding test for any golfer and a
perfect home course for your team.
I feel The Links is a perfect home course for
our team because of the challenge of the
course and the outstanding practice facilities,
that give our players the opportunity to focus
and train on all aspects of their game. The
Links at Hiawatha Landing is a great course
and great test. It will challenge all levels of
golfers. The course can be stretched out to
be over 7,100 yards from the championship
tees. Being a Links-style course, there are
many options in front of you to play each hole.
Course management really comes into play
as you need to think your way around as well
as strike the ball well. Players will use every
club in their bag throughout the round. All the
bunkers were very well placed and come into
play on every hole. The course can be very
challenging, especially if the wind picks up,
but also very fair. Players will be rewarded
when they hit good shots. This course
definitely will separate the very good players
from the average ones.
SENIOR LEADERSHIP
For the last decade, senior leadership has
played an instrumental role in shaping
BU’s success at the Division I level. The
Bearcats have relied on players like Adam
Fuchs (1999-2003) and Jeff Wolniewicz
(2004-2007), the all-time individual
scoring leaders, who have led BU to its
two lowest team scoring averages at
299.1 (2007) and 300.0 (2003). This
year’s wave of seniors Jake Katz and
Andrew Marler look to continue the
four-year increment of record-breaking
seasons. Co-Captains Katz and Marler
have played in at least ten tournaments
apiece over the past two seasons
and have contributed in the six team
titles over the 2008-09 and 2009-10
campaigns. With a reliable contributor
to the overall team score in Katz, the
rest of the team can compete in a more
relaxed state and concentrate on playing
their game. “He’s improved to a point
where it’s unbelievable,” head coach
Bernie Herceg said. “He inspires the rest
of the team because of his work ethic
and how good he’s become. It’s great to
have someone I can count on like that.
He has the ability to win every single
tournament.”
INDIVIDUAL SIGHTS
As the owner of the lowest single-season
scoring average record and lowest 18hole
round relative to par in BU history,
Jake Katz has made his mark in the
individual portion of a team sport. As
a junior, Katz etched his name into the
program’s record book with a scintillating
6-under-par (66) in the team’s win at
the Lafayette Invitational. With a current
ranking of fourth on the program’s
career scoring average list (75.10), Katz
has the opportunity to leapfrog Adam
Fuchs (74.73), Jeff Wolniewicz (75.07)
and Zach Vinal (75.09) as the all-time
scoring average leader. Katz has also
accumulated 16 top-10 finishes in his
career. He notched back-to-back seasons
with eight top-10 placements as a
sophomore and junior. The all-time record
for top10-finishes belongs to Adam Fuchs
(36), but Katz could surpass a few names
on the list, including Jeff Wolniewicz (23)
at second, if he continues his pace from
the last two years.
INCOMING FROSH
The Bearcats welcome two new faces
in Bryce Edmister and Paul Andrews
that look to make an immediate impact
on the squad. Edmister was a six-year
letterwinner at Webster-Schroeder High
School in Rochester. He will join Surdey
as the second left-hander on the team.
Edmister participated in qualifiers for the
Monroe Invitational and Porter Cup over
the summer. Meanwhile, Andrews racked
up plenty of tournament experience in the
summer months, including a third-place
finish at the NYS High School Federation
Tournament, which was played at
Bethpage, site of the 2009 US Open.
SUPPORTING CAST
The Bearcats have a sure-fire man in
Katz who has locked up the team’s No. 1
spot and led them in scoring during the
2009-10 campaign. However, scoring
from the third and fourth spot will
need to be consistent for the Bearcats
to match or improve upon three team
titles in consecutive seasons (2008-09,
2009-10). David Cellura represents a
sophomore-on-the-rise who held a 77.0
scoring average (third best on team)
in eight tournaments last season as a
freshman. The Bearcats will also need
contributions from Mike Surdey, who
returns as a redshirt junior after missing
much of the 2008-09 season due to
illness. Surdey registered three top-10
finishes last year en route to sharing a
77.0 scoring average with Cellura. Trevor
GOLF 2010-11 PreView
Sophmore David Cellura Junior Mike Surdey
Fiedler, another redshirt junior, sat out his
first year (2007-08) in accordance with
NCAA rules for transfer players. Fiedler
looks to return his game to sophomore
form (2008-09), where he tied for a
team-best feat with two medalist honors
and notched four top-10 finishes in
seven tournaments. Fiedler, who has
competed in eight tournaments over the

past two seasons, has won or tied for the
individual title in 25% of the events he’s
played. Marler, who has been a consistent
contributor to the team over the past
two years, looks to take on a leadership
role as co-captain. He has garnered
two top-10 finishes and eight top-20
performances in his career at BU.
12-SQUAD CONFERENCE CHAMPIONSHIP
HIGHLIGHTS SCHEDULE IN SPRING
Binghamton’s schedule will feature ten
team tournaments; six events in the fall
and four events, including the conference
championship in the spring. The Bearcats
will open the 2010-11 campaign for the
second straight year at the Missouri Tiger
Intercollegiate, hosted by the Turning
Stone Resort in nearby Verona. Two weeks
later, BU will compete in the Adams Cup
of Newport, hosted by Rhode Island, at
the prestigious Newport National GC.
The Bearcats will close out September
with a familiar tournament in the Cornell
Invitational, an event they have won four
times, including the 2009-10 tournament.
They will also mix in the Philadelphia Big 5
Invite, Yale MacDonald Cup, and Seton Hall
Intercollegiate in October. The Bearcats
have compiled two wins at the Yale
MacDonald Cup in the last six years (2004-
05, 2006-07). The America Sky Conference
Championship headlines the four-event
spring schedule. With the addition of
Seattle University, this year’s event will
feature a full 12-team conference. The
Bearcats registered a fifth place finish in
last year’s championship.
Senior Jake Katz taking aim at the
picturesque par-3 fifth hole at Cornell
University’s Robert Trent Jones GC.
COACHING SPOTLIGHT
Bernie Herceg enters his third year as
the Binghamton golf team’s head coach.
Over the past two seasons, Herceg has
amassed a 195-98-3 record in guiding
the Bearcats to six team titles. This
year’s squad is one of the deeper teams
Herceg has seen in years with a roster
that is between six and seven players
deep. Therefore, a premium is placed on
the qualifying rounds leading up to the
team invitationals at BU’s home course,
The Links at Hiawatha Landing. Herceg
certainly welcomes a team with such
depth that will ultimately make them
more competitive.”I’m really excited to
see how good we’re going to be this year
because the rest of the team is playing so
well,” said Herceg. “Our team is stronger
and more competitive. It’s a good problem
to have with how good our players are.
HIGHLIGHTS
First at Cornell Invitational
First at Hal Sutton Intercollegiate
First at Lafayette Invitational
season commenced with a sixth-place finish at the Turning
Stone Intercollegiate, hosted by the University of Missouri. The
Bearcats posted a 54-hole total of 923 (311-306-306) and were led
by junior Mike Surdey, who carded 75-72-80 for an 11th place finish
out of 65 players. Two weeks later, Binghamton secured a third-place
standing in the St. Bonaventure Invitational on the strength of an
impressive 288 team-total in the first round. Junior Jake Katz finished
2nd of 72 as he posted 1-under-par 139 for the tournament. The
Bearcats cruised to a seven-shot victory at the Cornell Invitational
in nearby Ithaca. Consecutive rounds of 295 propelled the Bearcats
squad to its lone victory of the fall season. Katz again earned runnerup
honors, this time out of 79 participants. Senior Patrick Donovan
paced the Bearcats at the prestigious Yale MacDonald Cup with
rounds of 73-75-69. The team, however, could only muster an 11th
place showing. Binghamton included a fourth-place effort out of 17
teams at the Philadelphia Big 5 Invite. Andrew Marler registered a
top-10 performance with rounds of 74-73. The Bearcats closed out
the fall portion of the schedule at the Seton Hall Intercollegiate, where
they produced another 3rd-place performance. Katz recorded his
third runner-up finish of the fall with a 1-over-par 36-hole total.
The spring season opened with a sluggish start at the C&F Bank
Intercollegiate, hosted by William and Mary. Donovan’s 12th place
ranking was an impressive one considering the 120-player field.
Katz fired his lowest 54-hole total of the year at the Hal Sutton
Intercollegiate to lead BU to its second team title of the 2009-10
indiVidual statistics
campaign. Binghamton’s most impressive feat, however,
came at the Lafayette Invitational where they captured the
team title out of 19 schools and Katz broke the all-time
program record for the lowest 18-hole score in relation to
par with a 6-under 66. He finished 2nd out 150 competitors
and improved his first-round total by 12 strokes. The
America Sky Championship featured a different look with
four additional schools competing compared to the last
conference championship in the fall of 2008. Binghamton
settled for a fifth place showing at the Los Logos GC in
McAllen, Texas. The spring season came to a close with
the Virginia Cavalier Classic. The Bearcats improved by 14
shots on the second day but could only manage a sixth
place finish out of 11 teams. Katz led the team with a 3rd
place standing out of 68.
Binghamton’s individual performances also mirrored those
of the 2008-09 program. Katz registered another stellar
season as he led the Bearcats with eight top-10 finishes for
the second consecutive campaign. In a record-setting year,
Katz broke the program’s scoring mark with a 73.6 season
average in 11 tournaments. He also set the low 18-hole
total record with a scintillating 6-under (66) at Lafayette,
where he finished second in a field of 150 participants.
Katz earned PING All-Region honors and was named
Tri-Player of the Year in the conference on the strength of
strong showings throughout the spring season. Donovan
also competed in all 11 tournaments with a 76.1 scoring
average. He racked up two top-10 finishes and four top-
20’s. Junior Mike Surdey and freshman David Cellura each
played in eight tournaments and averaged scoring mark’s
of 77.0. Junior Andrew Marler participated in ten team
tournaments and accumulated three top-20 finishes and
one top-10 effort.
Binghamton University's golf program
is a member of the America Sky Golf
Conference. The Bearcats and fellow
America East member Hartford joined five
other schools from across the country
in creating the golf-only league in 2007.
Former Big Sky Conference members
Univeristy of Northern Colorado, Sacramento
State University and Weber State University
plus then-independent programs at the
University of Texas-Pan American and Utah
Valley State College comprised the seventeam
conference three years ago. Last
summer, Chicago State, Houston Baptist,
North Dakota, and South Dakota moved
to the America Sky from the Great West
Conference. Seattle University accepted an
invitation over the summer to become the
12th team in the America Sky and will begin
conference competition this year.
The Bearcats have enjoyed great success
in their eight years of Division I competition,
boasting three NCAA regional appearances
and two conference titles. The team has
been one of the top-rated teams in the
Northeast during that time frame. Hartford
nipped BU to capture the final America East
title in 2007 and consequently received an
NCAA at-large berth.
NCAA CHAMPIONSHIP HIGHLIGHTS
1992 Championship
Wooster CC, Wooster, Ohio
In the team’s first national championship appearance, BU
shook off an opening-round 317 to post scores of 304-299-
307 and finish seventh among 21 teams. The third-round
299 was the lowest of the day among the field. Jake Sladish
placed ninth individually, with brother Chris finishing 13th
place. Both golfers earned All-America honors.
1993 Championship
Torrey Pines GC, La Jolla, Calif.
The Colonials overcame the absence of All-American Jake
Sladish to place fourth in a field of 22 teams. What began as
a strong title contender with two All-Americans was reduced
to a four-man team with two freshmen when Sladish was
forced to withdraw after aggravating a back injury. Brother
Chris picked up the slack, shooting 300 to finish fifth – just
six strokes behind the medalist. Dave Andrews placed 12th
to earn second team All-America honors. BU fended off a
charging field with a final-round 302.
1995 Championship
Hulman Links, Terre Haute, Ind.
BU battled through torrential rain storms to nail down
sixth place among 23 teams in the shortened 54-hole
championship. The Colonials vaulted from 10th place to sixth
on the final day, thanks to a 305. Marc Merrill fired an evenpar
72 in the second round and finished tied for 17th place
among 120 golfers – good for third team All-America honors.
John Binkley carded a final-round 74 to tie for 22nd and join
Merrill as an All-American.
