First at Lafayette Invitational
season commenced with a sixth-place finish at the Turning
Stone Intercollegiate, hosted by the University of Missouri. The
Bearcats posted a 54-hole total of 923 (311-306-306) and were led
by junior Mike Surdey, who carded 75-72-80 for an 11th place finish
out of 65 players. Two weeks later, Binghamton secured a third-place
standing in the St. Bonaventure Invitational on the strength of an
impressive 288 team-total in the first round. Junior Jake Katz finished
2nd of 72 as he posted 1-under-par 139 for the tournament. The
Bearcats cruised to a seven-shot victory at the Cornell Invitational
in nearby Ithaca. Consecutive rounds of 295 propelled the Bearcats
squad to its lone victory of the fall season. Katz again earned runnerup
honors, this time out of 79 participants. Senior Patrick Donovan
paced the Bearcats at the prestigious Yale MacDonald Cup with
rounds of 73-75-69. The team, however, could only muster an 11th
place showing. Binghamton included a fourth-place effort out of 17
teams at the Philadelphia Big 5 Invite. Andrew Marler registered a
top-10 performance with rounds of 74-73. The Bearcats closed out
the fall portion of the schedule at the Seton Hall Intercollegiate, where
they produced another 3rd-place performance. Katz recorded his
third runner-up finish of the fall with a 1-over-par 36-hole total.
The spring season opened with a sluggish start at the C&F Bank
Intercollegiate, hosted by William and Mary. Donovan’s 12th place
ranking was an impressive one considering the 120-player field.
Katz fired his lowest 54-hole total of the year at the Hal Sutton
Intercollegiate to lead BU to its second team title of the 2009-10
indiVidual statistics
campaign. Binghamton’s most impressive feat, however,
came at the Lafayette Invitational where they captured the
team title out of 19 schools and Katz broke the all-time
program record for the lowest 18-hole score in relation to
par with a 6-under 66. He finished 2nd out 150 competitors
and improved his first-round total by 12 strokes. The
America Sky Championship featured a different look with
four additional schools competing compared to the last
conference championship in the fall of 2008. Binghamton
settled for a fifth place showing at the Los Logos GC in
McAllen, Texas. The spring season came to a close with
the Virginia Cavalier Classic. The Bearcats improved by 14
shots on the second day but could only manage a sixth
place finish out of 11 teams. Katz led the team with a 3rd
place standing out of 68.
Binghamton’s individual performances also mirrored those
of the 2008-09 program. Katz registered another stellar
season as he led the Bearcats with eight top-10 finishes for
the second consecutive campaign. In a record-setting year,
Katz broke the program’s scoring mark with a 73.6 season
average in 11 tournaments. He also set the low 18-hole
total record with a scintillating 6-under (66) at Lafayette,
where he finished second in a field of 150 participants.
Katz earned PING All-Region honors and was named
Tri-Player of the Year in the conference on the strength of
strong showings throughout the spring season. Donovan
also competed in all 11 tournaments with a 76.1 scoring
average. He racked up two top-10 finishes and four top-
20’s. Junior Mike Surdey and freshman David Cellura each
played in eight tournaments and averaged scoring mark’s
of 77.0. Junior Andrew Marler participated in ten team
tournaments and accumulated three top-20 finishes and
one top-10 effort.
