10 the 2010-11 binghaMton golf teaM features a wide arraY of talent bursting froM all angles. SENIOR LEADERSHIP For the last decade, senior leadership has played an instrumental role in shaping BU’s success at the Division I level. The Bearcats have relied on players like Adam Fuchs (1999-2003) and Jeff Wolniewicz (2004-2007), the all-time individual scoring leaders, who have led BU to its two lowest team scoring averages at 299.1 (2007) and 300.0 (2003). This year’s wave of seniors Jake Katz and Andrew Marler look to continue the four-year increment of record-breaking seasons. Co-Captains Katz and Marler have played in at least ten tournaments apiece over the past two seasons and have contributed in the six team titles over the 2008-09 and 2009-10 campaigns. With a reliable contributor to the overall team score in Katz, the rest of the team can compete in a more relaxed state and concentrate on playing their game. “He’s improved to a point where it’s unbelievable,” head coach Bernie Herceg said. “He inspires the rest of the team because of his work ethic and how good he’s become. It’s great to have someone I can count on like that. He has the ability to win every single tournament.” INDIVIDUAL SIGHTS As the owner of the lowest single-season scoring average record and lowest 18hole round relative to par in BU history, Jake Katz has made his mark in the individual portion of a team sport. As a junior, Katz etched his name into the program’s record book with a scintillating 6-under-par (66) in the team’s win at the Lafayette Invitational. With a current ranking of fourth on the program’s career scoring average list (75.10), Katz has the opportunity to leapfrog Adam Fuchs (74.73), Jeff Wolniewicz (75.07) and Zach Vinal (75.09) as the all-time scoring average leader. Katz has also accumulated 16 top-10 finishes in his career. He notched back-to-back seasons with eight top-10 placements as a sophomore and junior. The all-time record for top10-finishes belongs to Adam Fuchs (36), but Katz could surpass a few names on the list, including Jeff Wolniewicz (23) at second, if he continues his pace from the last two years. INCOMING FROSH The Bearcats welcome two new faces in Bryce Edmister and Paul Andrews that look to make an immediate impact on the squad. Edmister was a six-year letterwinner at Webster-Schroeder High School in Rochester. He will join Surdey as the second left-hander on the team. Edmister participated in qualifiers for the Monroe Invitational and Porter Cup over the summer. Meanwhile, Andrews racked up plenty of tournament experience in the summer months, including a third-place finish at the NYS High School Federation Tournament, which was played at Bethpage, site of the 2009 US Open. SUPPORTING CAST The Bearcats have a sure-fire man in Katz who has locked up the team’s No. 1 spot and led them in scoring during the 2009-10 campaign. However, scoring from the third and fourth spot will need to be consistent for the Bearcats to match or improve upon three team titles in consecutive seasons (2008-09, 2009-10). David Cellura represents a sophomore-on-the-rise who held a 77.0 scoring average (third best on team) in eight tournaments last season as a freshman. The Bearcats will also need contributions from Mike Surdey, who returns as a redshirt junior after missing much of the 2008-09 season due to illness. Surdey registered three top-10 finishes last year en route to sharing a 77.0 scoring average with Cellura. Trevor GOLF 2010-11 PreView Sophmore David Cellura Junior Mike Surdey Fiedler, another redshirt junior, sat out his first year (2007-08) in accordance with NCAA rules for transfer players. Fiedler looks to return his game to sophomore form (2008-09), where he tied for a team-best feat with two medalist honors and notched four top-10 finishes in seven tournaments. Fiedler, who has competed in eight tournaments over the
past two seasons, has won or tied for the individual title in 25% of the events he’s played. Marler, who has been a consistent contributor to the team over the past two years, looks to take on a leadership role as co-captain. He has garnered two top-10 finishes and eight top-20 performances in his career at BU. Coach Bernie Herceg with Senior co-captain Andrew Marler 12-SQUAD CONFERENCE CHAMPIONSHIP HIGHLIGHTS SCHEDULE IN SPRING Binghamton’s schedule will feature ten team tournaments; six events in the fall and four events, including the conference championship in the spring. The Bearcats will open the 2010-11 campaign for the second straight year at the Missouri Tiger Intercollegiate, hosted by the Turning Stone Resort in nearby Verona. Two weeks later, BU will compete in the Adams Cup of Newport, hosted by Rhode Island, at the prestigious Newport National GC. The Bearcats will close out September with a familiar tournament in the Cornell Invitational, an event they have won four times, including the 2009-10 tournament. They will also mix in the Philadelphia Big 5 Invite, Yale MacDonald Cup, and Seton Hall Intercollegiate in October. The Bearcats have compiled two wins at the Yale MacDonald Cup in the last six years (2004- 05, 2006-07). The America Sky Conference Championship headlines the four-event spring schedule. With the addition of Seattle University, this year’s event will feature a full 12-team conference. The Bearcats registered a fifth place finish in last year’s championship. COACHING SPOTLIGHT Bernie Herceg enters his third year as the Binghamton golf team’s head coach. Over the past two seasons, Herceg has amassed a 195-98-3 record in guiding the Bearcats to six team titles. This year’s squad is one of the deeper teams Herceg has seen in years with a roster that is between six and seven players deep. Therefore, a premium is placed on the qualifying rounds leading up to the team invitationals at BU’s home course, The Links at Hiawatha Landing. Herceg certainly welcomes a team with such depth that will ultimately make them more competitive.”I’m really excited to see how good we’re going to be this year because the rest of the team is playing so well,” said Herceg. “Our team is stronger and more competitive.
