This Chevrolet and GMC truck maintenance manual is
part of a donation of over 1500 vehicle repair manuals and
automotive material from SkillsTech Australia. This collection
was previously held at the Mt Gravatt College of TAFE. The
donation covers all sorts of vehicles – the earliest being a
1926 Crossley car. Visit www.slq.qld.gov.au/garage – an
online resource for classic car collectors, restorers and
enthusiasts seeking information about pre-1970 vehicles.

This very rare poster was published in 1947. Qantas didn’t
take delivery of the aircraft until 1954, when it started its new
twice-weekly transpacifi c service to North America.

held on a broad-shouldered Atlas
with the North Pole at its centre.
Australia is shown extending across
sixty degrees so the eastern end lies north of New Zealand.
California is shown as an island and even the Great Wall of
China is visible.

Italian theologian, monk and a geographer, Vincenzo
Coronelli, was one of the greatest engravers and map
makers of the seventeenth century. Parte del mare Pacifi co is
the right-hand part of a two-sheet map that is quite complete
on its own.

The top hat and neck tie was probably worn by Sir Gordon
Chalk to attend the Melbourne Cup in 1967. The top
hat was made in England for the Henry Bucks Store in
Melbourne and purchased by Brisbane optometrist, Trevor
Henderson. It was then passed on to ‘Big Bill’ Edwards,
another racing identity, who gave it to Sir Gordon Chalk. All
three have signed their names inside the hat. Sir Gordon was
Queensland Premier for one week, before Johannes Bjelke-
Petersen was elected Premier on 8 August 1968, after which
Sir Gordon became Treasurer until he retired in 1976.

Mary Bennett lived in Somerset, England. A descendent,
Reginald S Hurd, brought her case when he came to
Australia in 1868. Further descendents, the children of
George Harris, kindly donated this item to the State Library in
2009.

The State Library holds original manuscripts, papers and
published scores that have been gifted by signifi cant
Queensland musicians including Colin Brumby, Clyde Collins
and Patrick Thomas. Richard Mills, AM, recently added his
ballet, Snugglepot and Cuddlepie, to his earlier gift of original
scores and material relevant to his work in Queensland.
Between 1991 and 2009, Mills was artistic advisor to the
Queensland Symphony Orchestra, Musica Nova Festival and
Director of Brisbane Biennial Festivals.

The sheet music that recorded the death
of the Premier of Queensland, Hon. T. J.
Byrnes, in 1898, was most likely written during preparations
for his state funeral. It is dedicated to his successor, Hon.
J. R. Dickson, who died in 1901. The Holy Happy Rest has
been digitised and is available through Music Queensland,
the State Library’s online archive of historical Queensland
sheet music.
